Bath sharing not the only way to save water A

FTER so much snow excess water is a problem, if anything, but it probably won’t be long before we’re being told to save water because of a drought. If your home has a water meter, conserving water should always be something you’re conscious of because it saves you money, and there are many ways to do it around the home. Around 25% of all the clean, drinkable water we use at home is flushed down the loo, but you can save a lot by only flushing when there’s something solid to flush away. If this doesn’t appeal, you can at least restrict the amount of water used for each flush by fitting a water-saving loo, such as a dual-flush one, which has a big and a little flush. You can also put something (a brick, or a plastic bag designed for the job – some water companies provide these free of charge) in the cistern so it doesn’t use as much water to flush. But it’s not just loos that drink water – baths do too. Taking a shower uses around two-thirds less water than taking a bath, providing you’re only in the shower for a few minutes and it’s a conventional (not a power) shower – some power showers use more water than a bath. You’ll save even more water by fitting a flow-restricting (non-aerating) or aerating shower head. These use less water per minute, but shouldn’t leave you showering in a dribble, although how well they’ll work will depend on the water flow of the shower. If you have a dripping tap, get it fixed as quickly as possible, as it will waste thousands of litres of water over the course of a year. Often the tap simply needs a new washer, which isn’t hard to fit. You can also fit flow restrictors to taps, or water-efficient or aerating taps to reduce the amount of water coming out of them. And next time you turn on a tap, consider whether you really need to. A running tap uses up to six litres of water per minute, so turning it off when brushing your teeth will save a lot of water, as will putting a little water in the washing-up bowl or bathroom basin when doing things such as scrubbing vegetables or washing your face. Any water left in the washing-up bowl can be used on the garden. You can also reuse bath water in the same way – if taking it outside in bowls isn’t

Top Tip If you have a frozen pipe, act quickly before it bursts and causes a lot of damage. To defrost it, first check that it hasn’t split and that the fittings haven’t been pushed apart, then apply heat gently along the length of the pipe using a hairdryer. Start at the end and if the pipe leads to a tap, make sure it’s turned on. Call in a plumber immediately if you’re not confident you can sort this out yourself.

There are lots of ways to conserve water – some cost a lot but many cost little or nothing and could save you cash, says Julia Gray

Product of the Week

SAVE IT: More than half of the mains water we use at home can be replaced by rainwater by collecting it via water butt

BATHE WITH CARE: Showers save two-thirds of the water in a bath – unless it’s powered

too much hassle. An easier (but much more expensive) option is a grey-water recycling system, which typically takes waste water from the bath, shower and basin and then uses it for the loo, outside tap and (sometimes) washing machine. In the garden, rainwater can be collected in a water butt by connecting it to a downpipe, which is a fairly simple DIY job. This makes watering the garden easier,

especially when there’s a hosepipe ban. A more elaborate version of this is a rainwater harvesting system, which comprises a tank that collects rain from the guttering and pumps it to where it’s needed – again usually for the loo, outside tap and washing machine. More than half of the mains water we use at home can be replaced by rainwater in this way, which is a big saving.

Crown Multi Surface Primer & Undercoat (from £12.67 for 750ml, www.chapelinteriors. co.uk) This is a great paint to keep to hand. It’s nice to use, easy to apply and dries quickly, but best of all it can be used to seal and prepare all kinds of surfaces – plasterboard, brick, stone, wood, plywood, chipboard, hardboard, MDF, PVC and melamine. It comes in handy all the time when you’re home improving and can be used both indoors and out, which is especially useful.

Office furniture gets by GABRIELLE FAGAN

W

ORKING might be essential for most of us, but who hasn’t dreamed – usually while suffering a cold commute or the tedium of office politics – of escaping and being based at home? Goodbye to harsh overhead lighting, drab desks, irritating colleagues and eagle-eyed bosses. Hello to a brave new world where you rule the roost and decide what colour the stationary cupboard should be. Working from home, whether by choice or necessity, is increasing – thanks in part to the huge leaps in technology we’ve seen over recent decades. More than a quarter of British workers now sometimes operate from home, while the number of people working ‘mainly’ at home is around 13%. If you’re serious about working from home, being set up with the right computer and printer is one thing – but it’s far from the be-all-and-end-all. You’ll also need to think about creating a suitable work space. Not only will this ensure you’re productive, it’s crucial for your wellbeing too, and for working from home to be a pleasure. “It’s a great choice but you need to ensure that you have a space that’s functional and fits into your home,” says Charlotte Hill-Baldwin, head of marketing at furniture specialists John Lewis of Hungerford. “Celebrate the fact that your work zone can be just the way you want it, you can create a setting which inspires you, but also ensure that when you want to ’finish’ for the day you can conceal that working area easily. “A little time and care taken in the planning, so that you really suit your needs, could help make you more productive and truly happy working at home.” Whether you want a desk to impress, a compact work station, or a special corner where you can deal with paperwork or enjoy a hobby, there’s a solution for every home. We’ve done the homework and you’re the boss – so choose a style that makes ’going to work’ a pleasure.

EXECUTIVE CHOICE

If you’re lucky enough to have a whole room at your disposal to transform into a home office, it will pay dividends if it’s designed specifically to suit your needs. As this is a space where you’re likely to spend large amounts of time, bad layout or poor storage solutions will quickly start to grate. Also, if you’re going to be holding meetings at home, you’ll want to create a

There should also be adequate working space either side of you when you sit at the desk.” SMART WORKING: Neville Johnson’s bespoke Urbano office can include open and closed storage and a made-tomeasure desk. It starts from £3,000.

To bring light and a feeling of space to a dark area consider their sleek, modern Brilliance range available in glossy white.

WORK THE ROOM

Incorporating a work space into an existing living area is an increasingly popular solution, according to fitted furniture specialists Sharps. Around 33% of us use a desk positioned in a living room or bedroom and 45% of people work over the weekends at home, often uncomfortably perching on a sofa or bed using a laptop. To work well, the space in a combined area should be well thought out, so it’s practical but not intrusive when you’re relaxing or socialising. “A home work space doesn’t have to be corporate or cluttered like a workplace office and should be designed to complement the rest of your home beautifully,” says Rachel Dilekci, a design and planning expert at Sharps. “Using lounge or dining furniture

for work purposes can be extremely uncomfortable, and affect posture, concentration and productivity levels. “It’s far better to have bespoke solutions which suit working and the look of your home.” SMART WORKING: A fully fitted Sharps home office starts from £1,200, including design, manufacture, delivery and installation. Its Como system, with light walnut frames and white gloss or glass doors, is designed to harmonise in an open-plan living area.

SPACE STARVED

If you haven’t got enough room to swing a proverbial cat, let alone a laptop, working from home can be stressful, so a smart versatile solution is essential. “If you’re working in a small area you need to be creative with every inch of space,” says Tom Kerry at The Holding Company. “Use stacking boxes, make sure they’re labelled with a list of contents, and well thought out shelving units which can triple the amount of space available to you. Desktop

stationery units and stackable in-trays will keep important paperwork in view but filed. “Don’t overlook making the space, no matter how small, attractive, so that it’s appealing to sit there, easy to focus, and you aren’t facing any distractions such as a TV or play area.” SMART WORKING: Marks & Spencer’s tall slim Sapporo desk unit, £199, incorporates three overhead shelves and, along with the matching six-drawer chest, £129, could be a workable answer. Alternatively, M&S’s handsome Greenwich bureau base, £799, wouldn’t look out of place in a living room. It has a fold-down desk top, stationery compartments and a roomy cupboard below. For a fitted solution, John Lewis’s Creator range, from £3,500, can be tailored to any space including awkward areas under the stairs, or a loft room with a sloping ceiling.

FEEL AT HOME

One of the delights of working from home is that your work space doesn’t need to feel ‘corporate’. If you want an area where you

F YOU’RE still scratching your head as to what to do with your garden this year, whether trying veg in pots for the first time, creating a wildflower meadow or completely re-landscaping your outdoor space, there are new books coming out which should provide you with plenty of ideas. Here, in order of publication, are just a few of the many gardening titles on offer this year:

Royal Horticultural Society Grow Your Own Crops In Pots by Kay Maguire (Mitchell Beazley, £16.99, available now)

AS GROWING your own fruit and veg continues to gain popularity, this book is one for people who perhaps don’t have room for a vegetable plot or who simply want to have a go at growing produce in pots on the patio, close to the kitchen. Featuring everything from bags of potatoes to grapes on the vine, and delicious combinations such as tomato with basil, the book guides the reader through techniques and tips, as well as sound advice for growing each type of fruit and veg.

Christine Walkden’s No-Nonsense Container Gardening (Simon & Schuster, £20, February 28):

but Christine Walkden is a gardener first and a presenter second. In her typical down-to-earth style, she shows you how to recycle tin cans, fruit crates and baskets and turn them into portable growing containers, grow your own lunch in a tub with dwarf varieties and cultivate abundant flowers for cutting and fragrance. Well illustrated and with tips from personal experience, this book will suit the fairly new gardener looking for new ideas.

Wild Flowers by Carol Klein (BBC Books, £20, February 28)

MASTER plantswoman and Gardeners’ World presenter Carol Klein celebrates the most exquisite flora growing wild in our woodlands, hedgerows, meadows and moors in this book and then returns to her own garden to see their cultivated cousins. This tie-in book sees Klein delving into the story of more than 30 of her favourite wild flowers, and sharing her practical expertise and

The Rurbanite by Alex Mitchell (Kyle Books, £16.99, March 1)

DO YOU live in the city but dream of keeping chickens? Do you look at derelict patches of ground on your way to work and see their potential as vegetable patches? If so, you’re a rurbanite. You have a passion for the countryside but no intention of leaving the city. Don’t worry, you’re not alone. You’re part of a growing band of people who want the best of

both worlds. The author shares her passion, practical projects and incredible stories from seed bombers, rooftop beekeepers, guerrilla gardeners and urban farmers to inspire you to be in touch with your green side and change the cityscape for the better.

Good enough to eat Fenugreek ANY fan of curries will be totally familiar with fenugreek, a green whose seeds form the basis of many curry powder blends. But you can also eat the leaves, which can be a substitute for spinach or mixed with spices and potatoes, or just ripped and scattered over salads. You can acquire the seeds from supermarkets or Asian stores. The seeds are often sold in a spice shaker and you then scatter over prepared soil or pots of compost between April and September, preferably in full sun. Lightly cover the seeds and water them in well. Thin them out when the plants are 5cm high and keep sowing every fortnight so that you have a constant supply throughout the summer. When you’re ready to use them, snip the leaves off to within 10cm of the ground, as the youngest leaves are the ones at the top of the plant. The remaining stem will recover and produce more leaves.

Crackdown on letting agents could net £20m says report TOUGHER regulation of letting agents would help to generate more than £20m of benefits a year to the UK economy, research from surveyors suggests. The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) said that a clampdown on the lettings sector, which it has previously likened to “the property industry’s Wild West”, would pay for itself in less than two and a half years. RICS has warned that it is possible for people to set up a letting agency without appropriate qualifications, knowledge or understanding of the rental process, and it is not compulsory to conform to codes of conduct. This means tenants and landlords are in danger of falling victim to rogue practices by agents, which also has an impact on the wider economy, RICS said.

The research, compiled for RICS by economic research body TBR, looked into the potential impact of bringing letting agents under stronger regulation and setting out minimum professional standa. Stronger regulation would cost around £45m to set up, including putting the right administration procedures in place and paying for training, the report said. However, these toughened rules would provide more than £20m of net benefits every year. Peter Bolton King, RICS global residential director, commented: “These findings demonstrate exactly why the Government needs to act, not just to safeguard the thousands of tenants and landlords who fall victim to unscrupulous practice, but also to relieve pressure on the wider economy.”

OVING home in 2013 could be easier than you think, especially when there are a number of tempting incentives on offer at Redrow’s Crown Park development in Chester. There is something available to suit the needs of every buyer, including part-exchange and 95% mortgages through the NewBuy scheme. NewBuy is available on all properties at Crown Park and gives buyers the opportunity to purchase with just a 5% deposit. Because of this, it has the potential to help more people to move, whether they are buying their first home or stepping up the property ladder. Anita Williams, sales director for Redrow Homes (NW) said: “Many people have sufficient income to make monthly mortgage payments on the amount they wish to borrow; they just don’t have the cash available to put down the large deposit demanded by many lenders. NewBuy offers those buyers a solution. “Whereas if customers want to avoid buyers who change their mind, last minute haggles over price, being stuck in a complicated chain and estate agent’s fees, then part-exchange could be the perfect

It allows our customers to use their current house as part payment for a brand new home.” Anita added: “Redrow effectively acts as a guaranteed cash buyer so there’s no need to worry about getting caught up in a complicated chain. Guide STYLISH: New City Vision's Ellergreen development

LOVELY: NCV has a Valentine's special offer at its Ellergreen development in Norris Green

Where love’s in the air by KATIE McLOUGHLIN

W

ITH February being the month of love, switched-on housebuilder New City Vision (NCV) has created an amazing offer that promises to keep Valentine’s Day romance alive for a whole year! House-hunters who reserve a new

three or four bedroom home at its Ellergreen development in February will, on legal completion, receive VIP cinema tickets for two people to have a special ‘date night’ at the cinema complete with soft drinks and popcorn, every month up to and including February 2014. Louise Craven, sales manager said: “Valentine’s Day is about falling in love, so what could be better than falling in love with a

new home at Ellergreen and then receiving a romantic date night every month courtesy of New City Vision.” As well as the Valentine’s offer, the house-builder is also offering to pay half the cost on legal fees to help home-buyers secure their dream now, whilst plots are still available at 2012 prices. These special offers are in addition to the exceptional incentives that have

helped make Ellergreen so popular with city house-hunters. NCV also offers a Rent-to-Buy scheme at Ellergreen. The popular scheme helps home-buyers out of the rental trap by saving for a deposit whilst they rent a home at Ellergreen. NCV also has a shared equity scheme that offers a stepping stone approach to home ownership. With prices from £92,000 on a shared equity scheme, no stamp

duty to pay, attractive offers and a location with easy routes to the A580, M57 and M62, Ellergreen has it all is worth a closer look. ● The sales centre, on Utting Avenue East, Norris Green, and show home is open from 10am until 5pm Monday to Friday and from 11am until 4pm on weekends.Call 0151 256 0900, email sales@newcity visionliverpool.co.uk facebook.com/Ellergreen.
