GUIDE ... to home improvement Giving your home's woodwork a lick of paint can transform it from shabby to chic, says Julia Gray
W
ith the festive season coming up, you may be looking for quick and easy ways to make your home smarter and more chic than shabby. Repainting the walls is the obvious answer, but repainting the interior woodwork can make just as much of a difference, especially if it's seen better days. If white solvent-based paint has been used on your home's woodwork, which is usually the case, it will have discoloured over time - sometimes only in a
Make it good wood this year
DAMP stains always reappear, no matter how many times you paint over them, but not if you use Ronseal One Coat Anti-Damp Paint (from £8.98 for 250ml, B&Q) before your topcoat. While you should definitely remedy the cause of the damp first, this paint can be applied to damp surfaces and allows trapped moisture to escape, which is really good because damp walls and ceilings can take ages to dry out. Ronseal Anti-Damp Paint often covers in one coat, but some stains require a couple of (thin) coats – don't apply it too thickly because you'll get a poor finish. It dries very quickly for this type of paint – it's touch-dry in a couple of hours and can be over-coated in four – and works on other types of stain, too. It isn't as thick and hard to apply as many stain-blocking paints, so once you've painted (or wallpapered) over it, you'll never know it was there.
WATERCOLOUR: Try and use a water-based woodpaint to make life a bit easier matter of months. Wood paints were traditionally gloss, but these days lower-sheen satinwood and eggshell are more fashionable finishes - shiny woodwork isn't the done thing any more. As well as specific wood (and metal) paints, you can get multi-surface paints, which are really useful because they can be used on walls and ceilings as well as wood and metal, ideal if you're painting where a skirting board or doorframe joins the wall, for example. These multi-surface paints are becoming increasingly popular - B&Q does a good own-brand one (Colours Everywhere, from £13.98 for 2.5ltr, B&Q) and even Crown Kitchen & Bathroom emulsion (from £19.98 for 2.5ltr, B&Q) comes into this category. In addition to causing discolouration, solvent-based wood paints have other disadvantages. They often dry slowly so it can take days to do the job, give off fumes, are prone to runs and drips (although non-drip versions are available) and are hard to get off your skin, clothes, carpets and anything else you get them on accidentally - even the paintbrush is hard to clean. Because of these problems, I would always recommend using water-based wood paints. These dry quickly, even at this time of year, and although you need to do quite a few coats, the paint goes on more easily than solvent-based alternatives and becomes easier and quicker to apply the more coats you do, so it's possible to do several coats in a day. You rarely get a run with
Product of the week
Top Tip IF YOU'RE painting large areas of flat wood, such as doors, a small foam roller will give you the best finish because you won't get brush marks. The problem with using these rollers is that you don't get as much paint on the wood as you would with a brush, so try painting it on with a brush and then rollering it out for a smooth finish. To get the best possible finish, lightly sand the wood with fine sandpaper between coats of paint (and wipe clean afterwards). This enables you to remove anything stuck to the dried paint, such as hairs and dirt, and to minimise any runs and brush marks. It also provides a 'key' for the next coat of paint, helping it to adhere.
Find A Home BRUSH UP: Go gently otherwise you’ll spend half your time cleaning up water-based wood paints, and they're relatively easy to clean off. They also give off fewer fumes and are better for the environment because they contain fewer harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Best of all, white water-based wood paint will stay white for years, long after a solvent-based one would have changed colour, so you won't have to repaint
nearly as often. Filler, sandpaper and paint can work wonders with woodwork that seems beyond repair, but if you do have to replace the wood, make sure you seal the knots (with knotting solution) in the new (bare) wood first to ensure that the resin in them doesn't bleed through and ruin your paintwork.
It's also essential to use wood primer – again, a water-based one is your best bet – on bare wood, or wood primer/undercoat, which obviously saves you time compared to using separate products. It's a good idea to apply this to previously painted wood, too, because it helps the topcoat to adhere better.

t’s all too easy to be baffled by lighting, because the choice today is dazzling.Faced with spotlights, downlighters, uplighters, lamps and chandeliers, not to mention all the advancing technology in light bulbs, it’s enough to make you retire to a darkened room and forget the whole business. But that would be a big mistake because lighting has enormous power to transform rooms and alter atmosphere and mood. A sensitive lighting system can go a long way to redress spatial limitations - by tricking the eye into thinking there’s more room than there actually is. “Too many people treat lighting as an afterthought, or place it a long way down the list of priorities,” says Peter Bowles, managing director of Davey Lighting. “Ideally, lighting should be considered at the planning stage of a renovation or new build. You need to look at each area of your home at different times of the day so you can see where the natural light falls and its quality. “Then you can also pinpoint any areas which are underlit by both natural or artificial light. Once you’ve assessed that, you’re in a good position to make a lighting plan and finally move on to choosing decorative fittings.” Many designers regard lighting as the equivalent of jewellery for rooms and this season there’s a wealth of styles to choose from, with the strongest trends emerging as metallics in copper and brass, in colour and in industrial or retro style. “A combination of general, task and accent lighting will ensure your home works on all light levels. Invest in good design with quality materials and sleek styling and it will stand the test of time,” says Bowles. Winter’s long dark nights and early evenings leave us craving well-lit, welcoming spaces, so follow the room-by-room guide to lighting up your life.
LIGHT AND LOUNGING
Living rooms are often multi-functional spaces which require a variety of lighting to suit different activities at varying times of the day. “Lighting not only performs a function but is a key element in creating the right mood in any living space,” says Andrea Warburton, lighting buyer at The Conran Shop. “In order to choose the right lighting, it’s important to focus on its purpose first: for instance, whether it is to diffuse light across a whole room,
Don’t get tripped up by light fantastic to be bright enough to read under, or to zone a space. “Consider materials, colour and style next and look to other elements in the room for inspiration. Match the colour or material of the lamp to another item in the room for example.” TIP: Pendants hung over sofas will create a dramatic seating zone in a room. STAR LIGHTS: For elegant, contemporary style it’s hard to beat an Elsa six-arm ceiling light, £180, or a slender Lily floor lamp with five curved stems branching outwards, £190, and matching table lamp, £75, all John Lewis. Scandi appeal endures and John Lewis’s Secto Victo pendant ceiling lights, from £650, made from laminated birch slats, are classics. For a truly different light it’s hard to beat the Favourite Things Suspension Lamp Cloud, £295, The Conran Shop, which allows objects to be displayed and illuminated in a clear bowl
beneath the fitting. A tight budget needn’t prevent you putting on a light show. Turn on to chic supermarket style with Sainsbury’s Tu Sebastian black glass table lamp, £35, and Tu Smedley Wooden Tripod with grey or cream shade, £40. Use Marks & Spencer’s brilliant value Iconic floor lamp, £99, available in selected stores, to highlight a room feature or statement piece of furniture.
FEAST OF LIGHT
Kitchens require lighting to work hard so it’s bright and focused in preparation and cooking areas but intimate in eating and
dining zones. “To light work surfaces, practical space-saving wall lights make a great alternative to under-cabinet lights, and bring a more quirky, individual look,” says Peter Bowles. “Interesting fittings will stop your kitchen looking overly clinical. Match the style of your light fittings to your room. Prismatic glass and bone china work wonderfully in country-style kitchens, metallic pendants give an

industrial flavour, and brightly painted pendants bring an often-needed pop of colour.” TIP: Look for flexible lights which can be angled and adjusted to effectively control direction or spread of light. STAR LIGHTS: Complement industrial style with a Diner 125 pendant, £658, with its weathered brass and glass oblong shade and four bulbs, or opt for a School light, £358, in polished copper with a white interior, both Davey Lighting. The fashion for metallics is reflected in the Celeste pendant light, £80, available in a gold or copper finish, John Lewis. Punchy colour brightens the dullest kitchen and Dwell has lamps in vibrant shades including a Kinja pendant, orange, £79, or a tubby Shroom table lamp, from £29.

STONE ME: Newts love to hide under rockeries

THIRD of us are actively trying to encourage wildlife into our gardens - an increase of more than 30% compared with four years ago, according to research by the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA). More products targeted at the wild bird market are available in garden centres and we can choose feeding regimes which will attract birds that we most want to see in our gardens, says the HTA, the trade association for the UK garden industry. Indeed, some 62% of us now regularly feed the birds in our garden and nearly a quarter provide nesting and breeding habitats. But birds are not the only wildlife we can look after during the winter months and beyond. By making leafy habitats and cosy corners, we will provide shelter for small animals who need to hibernate uninterrupted and for beneficial insects who will stop the nuisance ones such as aphids in their tracks. Leave stones laid over hollows for toads, newts and even slow worms,
Help wildlife feel at home this Winter as well as centipedes which prey on slugs. Pile up a few logs, which don’t need to be massive, in a quiet, shady spot and soon stag beetles, spiders and bees will be making a home out of this damp log cabin. Log piles may also be housing slugs and snails, which in turn will attract blackbirds and wood mice looking for a meal, while hedgehogs
may also forage for insects and slugs. Try not to make your garden too tidy if you want to provide shelter for wildlife. Areas of long grass and piles of leaves, stones and twigs provide shelter for many beneficial insects and small mammals. Always check carefully for signs of life by gently turning over autumn
bonfires before igniting them. Ladybirds gather in large clusters to overwinter on dead plant stems, particularly in more sheltered parts of the garden. Helping them through winter will mean fewer aphids in late spring, when ladybird larvae begin to eat them. There’s a wide variety of foods available which attract different
Best Of The Bunch Fatsia japonica This valuable evergreen shrub, also known as the false castor oil plant, has huge tropical-looking, hand-shaped deep green leaves and brings some architectural interest to shady spots in the garden. It can grow to around 3m x 4m (10ft x 12ft) if left to its own devices, but can be kept smaller by pruning without too much fuss. In late autumn, the leaves are joined by rounded clusters of large, fluffy, cream-coloured flowers and then black berries similar to those of ivy. It isn’t fussy about its soil, but is best grown in light shade. SHADY CHARACTER: Japanese Aralia (Fatsia Japonica) has huge tropical-looking deep green leaves

Keeping bird feeders and baths well stocked all winter will not only help the birds but also encourages them to explore other nooks and crannies in your garden, where overwintering slugs, caterpillars

Avoid cutting hedges until the end of winter to provide valuable shelter for birds and give them more time to eat the berries and wait until March to cut back ivy growing up walls and fences, so the berries will be available to birds and the foliage can provide a
foraging shelter for insect-eaters such as tits. If you have a pond, put a few clay roof tiles in it to provide cover for overwintering frogs and other aquatic wildlife. If you help wildlife through the winter months, beneficial insects, birds and other animals will have a head start.
AS you pack your supermarket trolley with nuts to last through the festive season, it might be worthwhile trying to grow some of your own. Walnuts may not be the easiest things to grow in our climate and indeed, the walnut tree originates from Persia - but new self-fertile varieties are proving more successful in this country. Certain types can tolerate our wet, cool conditions and crop well. Walnut trees should be planted in a sheltered sunny spot and protected from late frosts which may destroy their new growth and flowers. Choose varieties such as ’Buccaneer’ or ’Rita’ (even the smaller varieties grow up to 7.5m) and plant them in the autumn, staking the tree for several years, until established. Keep it well-watered during its early years and enrich the earth around it with compost. Fully ripened walnuts can be harvested in September and October, when the husk starts to split. They should be dried straight away by a boiler and then put in well-ventilated bags and GROW SOME NUTS: Certain varieties of walnuts kept in a cool, airy spot. are easier to grow than others so choose wisely
3 ways to ... Cover ground
1
When choosing, look for large perennials which you can divide straight away into two or three.

Ground cover works best in swathes and carpets of similar plants, so use three, five, seven or more young plants of one type.
3
For all-yearround interest, choose plants which flower at different times of the year, including hardy cranesbills, common thyme and heather.
Report critical of PM’s promise to ‘get Britain building’ HOMELESSNESS and overcrowding are getting worse while David Cameron fails to deliver on his promise to “get Britain building”, leading housing bodies have warned. Despite a string of initiatives by the Government, the UK’s housing shortage is continuing to deepen, according to a report by Shelter, the National Housing Federation and the Chartered Institute of Housing. Private sector rents are becoming even more expensive while more people are claiming housing benefit, it said. Overcrowding worsened between 2009/10 and 2010/11 and the number of families in temporary accommodation and B&Bs for more than six weeks has also increased. The report also warned the government had made “no progress” on housing supply and that planning reforms had so far failed to show “real signs” of making a difference.
It welcomed falls in repossessions and mortgage arrears but said that was linked to low interest rates which were likely to rise by 2015. There had also been “solid progress” on bringing empty homes back into use. It said “little has changed” on home ownership although house sales “may have increased slightly”. The report comes at the halfway point for the coalition government and a year since the Prime Minister said last November that the government would “restart the housing market and get Britain building again”. Shelter chief executive Campbell Robb said the government “simply isn’t delivering the new homes we need”. “Young people and families are finding it impossible to get an affordable home of their own, no matter how hard they work and save,” he said. “The longer this situation continues, the bigger the problem future
generations will face.” David Orr, chief executive of the National Housing Federation said there had been “words and policy” but “we’ve not had delivery”. “After years of chronic undersupply of new homes we have millions of families now struggling to keep on top of their rising rents and priced out of the housing market,” he said. “This cannot continue; we’re running out of time to fix our broken housing market and need to address the causes of rising housing costs, not just the symptoms. We need delivery, and we need it now.” Grainia Long, chief executive at the Chartered Institute of Housing, urged the Government to “redouble its efforts”. “The case for investing in housing is well accepted by the government, which is reflected in recent policy announcements on growth,” she said. “But funding and policy are only part
of the story. Unless this translates into delivery of new homes or regeneration of empty homes then we won’t be able to house the five million additional households likely to be created within the next two decades.” Shadow housing minister Jack Dromey said the report was a “damning indictment” of the government. “Britain is building homes at less than half the rate new households are being formed. Millions are locked out of home ownership. Rents are at their highest ever level in the private sector and homelessness is soaring,” he added. “It is nothing short of a scandal that 75,000 children will wake up on Christmas Day without a home as the number of families in bed and breakfast increases by 57%.” Communities minister Don Foster said the government was determined to “pull out all the stops”. “Under the last government, housing
waiting lists doubled, house building fell to its lowest peacetime rate since the 1920s and the benefits bill went through the roof,” he said. “Whether to help people onto the housing ladder, strengthen our growing private rented sector or provide vital support to those facing homelessness we are determined to pull out all the stops to provide housing. “We are investing £19.5 billion public and private funding into an affordable housing programme for 170,000 homes, introducing £10 billion loan guarantees to encourage greater investment in new private rent homes and we have sold enough surplus public land for 33,000 new properties. “On top of this government continues to offer one of the strongest safety nets in the world against homelessness with £470 million for homelessness prevention and to ensure no-one spends a second night out on the streets.

ERSEYSIDE’S buy-to-let market is going from strengthto-strength, thanks to increasing demand for rented properties and the good value buy-to-let mortgages on offer, according to David Wilson Homes. The developer is urging buy-to-let investors in Merseyside to consider all their options, as it believes the potential return on investment in the region is strong. Steve Jackson, sales director at David Wilson Homes North West, said: “We’ve seen a revival in the buy-to-let market, thanks to high rental demand and low mortgage rates. In fact, buy-to-let mortgage lending is up 18% year-on-year according to Money Observer, which is a real sign that confidence among investors and lenders is increasing.” David Wilson Homes North West offers buyers a number of investment opportunities, such as its showhome leaseback scheme, which comes with a guaranteed yield of 6%. Through the scheme, investors can buy a showhome at selected developments in the region and then immediately lease it back to David Wilson Homes North West for up to five years to use as a marketing suite. OME buyers are paying £18,200 less on their deposit when purchasing a property with an average price of £182,000 through NewBuy, the Government-backed 95% mortgage scheme, according to Taylor Wimpey North West. Lynne Vogel, regional sales manager for Taylor Wimpey North West, explained: “House hunters in Merseyside are really benefiting from NewBuy, so this is great news for home buyers in the area. In comparison to the standard 15-20% deposit needed when buying on the open market, this represents an enormous reduction for first-time buyers and home-movers.” NewBuy is accessible to all credit-worthy first-time buyers and home-movers across England, and is available on new-build properties up to the value of £500,000. Through the Government-backed scheme, purchasers can access 95% mortgages and only need pay a minimum deposit of 5% of the value of the property. Lynne added: “NewBuy is proving to be an excellent purchasing tool for our customers with limited finances. When looking at the facts, it’s heartening to see that home-buyers could pay around £18,200 less on their deposit

THE WAIT IS OVER FOR TWO STUNNING
NEW SHOW HOMES IN WIDNES THE doors are now open to two eagerly awaited show homes at Redrow’s impressive new development in Widnes Homebuyers can now see inside Redrow’s New Heritage Collection homes and view the luxurious interiors of the new four-bedroom Richmond and five bedroom Blenheim at Lancaster Place, on Lunts Heath Road.
The charming ‘Homeward Bound’ inspired room features scrolls of sheet music and a handwritten inscription of the song lyrics on the feature wall. Further interest is added with vintage style accessories.
Since its launch, Lancaster Place has received a flurry of visitors and has drawn interest from discerning buyers across the region. Those who have visited the development and reserved homes have been impressed by the location, the high standard of Redrow’s interior specification and the arts and crafts inspired exteriors.
In another of the bedrooms, Redrow has celebrated one of the most famous aircrafts of the second world war, the Lancaster Bomber, after which the development is named. A striking piece of wall art depicting the bomber creates an eye-catching focal point.
In a nod to the rich history and local passions of Widnes, the Blenheim show home includes a room inspired by Paul Simon’s ‘Homeward Bound’ song, which he famously wrote at Widnes train station in 1965, as well as a room dedicated to the Lancaster Bomber aircraft, the creation of Widnes born designer Roy Chadwick. Anita Williams, sales director for Redrow Homes (NW), said: “We’re delighted with the feedback we’ve already received from our customers and feel we’ve hit the right note with our combination of traditionally styled homes and classic yet contemporary interiors. We hope the new show homes, inspired by the people and history of Widnes, will in turn inspire buyers to choose their perfect home here.” In the Blenheim show home, the interior designers have accentuated the feeling of space inside the house with a light colour scheme and soft oak furniture.
In the neighbouring Richmond property, the interior scheme is once again luxurious and effortlessly stylish, with a light colour scheme of grey, taupe and cornflower blue. One of the bedrooms has been themed for a fan of the Widnes Vikings, with a bold contemporary wall mural depicting a rugby match. There’s also a team strip and rugby ball, which no Vikings fan should be without. Lancaster Place, will eventually feature a choice of two to five bedroom homes, including some of Redrow largest and most well-appointed properties. Situated on the northern and easterly fringes of Widnes and bordered by open fields, the development is close to Widnes town centre and within easy travel of Liverpool, Warrington and Manchester, via the M62 motorway or by rail from Widnes train station, which offers journey times to Liverpool and Manchester of around 30 minutes. Economically, Widnes is a place that’s on the up with significant inward investment
in recent times. There’s approval for a second Mersey crossing, a new cinema and bowling alley have opened at The Hive leisure park, with a new ice rink soon to follow, there’s a recently opened £40 million Tesco Extra 24-hour store in the town, as well as the new Widnes Shopping Park with Marks & Spencer, Boots, Next, Bhs and Costa Coffee among its stores.
Prices at Lancaster Place are from £215,000 to £449,500 for a range of three and four-bedroom homes. To find out more about Redrow visit the new show homes at Lancaster Place, seethe website www.redrow.co.uk/lancaster or call 0151 378 8807.
