MANY 15 and 16 year olds will be facing tough choices later this month when they decide whether to leave school and seek employment or stay in full time education. For those who want to learn a trade, while getting paid and gaining vital on-the-job experience, an apprenticeship could be the answer. Redrow Homes is recruiting 20 new apprentices this year and is calling on school leavers to apply now for placements. Karen Jones, HR director for Redrow, says: “Attracting the brightest candidates is the key to our company’s ongoing success and we are hopeful that young people looking to lay solid foundations for a career in the building trade will apply for these sought after positions.” This year’s recruitment drive follows on from Redrow’s successful apprentice scheme in 2010, when the company took on 50 trainees. The Redrow apprenticeship programme combines on-the-job paid work and an NVQ completed over three years. Applications are being sought for apprenticeships in the core trades of bricklaying and woodcraft, although applications for other trades including plumbing will be considered. Applicants must be registered with CITB Construction Skills (CSkills), the construction industry’s training board, which can be done via a link on Redrow’s careers website: www.redrowplc .co.uk/Careers-And-Recruitment /Apprentices. Candidates are asked to take and pass the CSkills Skills Learning Exercise (SLE) Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed with the successful ones commencing their apprenticeship in September 2011. Redrow has also offered positions to six Graduate Trainees for September this year and has begun the recruitment process for a new intake of under-graduate one-year work placements.

FAIR TRADE: St Helens Council is laucnhing a new register

“We are encouraged that some lenders have reduced their application admin fees by 50%, which makes a big difference to first time buyers,” he says. His comments came as id4living, a Seddon Homes company, prepares to launch a new development of contemporary homes priced at 90% of market value to give first time buyers a much-needed helping hand. Seddon has also introduced a shared equity scheme at some other developments, including Mosaic at Runcorn. Called Springboard, the scheme allows selected buyers to own the full 100% of a property while paying a mortgage of just 80% of the market price. Of the remainder 15% will be financed by an interest free 10-year loan from Seddon and by a reduced 5% contract deposit. For details of Seddon Homes’ schemes and developments, log onto www.seddonhomes.co.uk

NORTH west developer ● Seddon Homes has ● welcomed news that some major mortgage lenders are making more funds available for first time buyers - and cutting their fees. Denis Maddock, sales and marketing director, says the move, along with an increase in the availability of shared equity schemes and the Bank of England’s maintenance of interest rates at low levels, was crucial to help bring first time buyers back into the market place.

LOOKING for a fair and honest trader to carry out home improvements or work on your garden? St Helens Council has established a Trader Register called Fair Trader, Fair Comment. Trading standards officers are compiling a list to help residents locate fair and honest traders within the borough, and support local businesses. It’s not an approval scheme but aims to reassure consumers and help them find a reliable trader. The Fair Trader, Fair Comment trader register is now recruiting St Helens based traders who work within any trade sector. Prior to joining, trading standards will carry out basic business checks and request references from six customers from within the previous six months. When a member of the Fair Trader/Fair Comment trader register has completed work for a customer the customer can rate the quality of the work, the time taken and the customer service given by the member trader. Up to 5 stars can be awarded for each of these three aspects. If you are interested in joining the Trader Register or require

The charity, which provides care for terminally ill patients and their families in their homes and in hospices, is running the national campaign between the now and July 12. Last year Marie Curie ran a similar campaign and raised enough money to fund 30,200 hours of care with every £20 raised funding one hour. James Kersh says: “We are delighted to be able to support such a fantastic and worthwhile cause. Sadly these days, it is incredibly rare for anyone to not know someone that has had cancer or that has someone close to them that is suffering. “The team behind Marie Curie provides a wonderful service and we hope that the campaign exceeds the brilliant success that was achieved last year. “From every property sold we will be able to provide 2 ½ hours care; that provides a huge motivation. We are also looking at other ways to support the charity through our branches.” The 'Blooming Big Property Auction' will take place at the Marriott Hotel in Queens Square in Liverpool City Centre.

Better buy design on the waterfront

ELEGANT: The newly transformed show flat in the Mann Island apartment blocks

F

ORGET the X Factor. Apartments at Liverpool’s stunning new apartment blocks have got the ‘wow’

factor. New show apartments at this prestige development have been given a fabulous interior design finish to show them off to potential purchasers. And prospective buyers can arrange to see the apartments on offer in Mann Island’s two residential buildings now. The work has been carried out by celebrated interiors company Phoenix Design using mirrors to striking effect and accessories from the

by JANET TANSLEY likes of Vivienne Westwood and Jack Wills. A one-bedroom apartment with terrace facing the Three Graces and a two-bedroom unit facing the canal basin and Albert Dock have both been given the magic touch. It means would-be owners can see just how their apartment could look – and get ideas about adding their own personal touch. The sales and marketing suite is also to get a new state of the art home to assist those with an interest in snapping up

one of the 376 distinctive units within this waterfront development. It is to move into the glazed connecting space between the two buildings, opening this up to the public and helping to animate this new city destination. The black granite-clad residential blocks have been christened Latitude and Longitude, emphasising the development site’s connection with the Liverpool waterfront and its strong maritime heritage, while the connecting area housing the sales and marketing suite will be known as the Equator. With interest high, the

current offer for buyers is that Countryside Properties will pay 5% towards a deposit on one of the apartments, up to a maximum of £8,750. And new residents will join an illustrious neighbour, as the development will be home to a Brasserie Blanc restaurant, part of the chain from renowned chef Raymond Blanc! One-bedroom apartments start at £120,000, and there are also two and three-bedroom apartments, plus penthouse options available. For information contact 0151231 1224 or visit the development websites at www. mannislandapartments.co.uk

Waterfront living – see pull-out

Get a firm footing on the property ladder SAY goodbye to your landlord, and hello to the property ladder. That’s the message from Miller Homes which has just launched apartments for less than £80,000 at its Connaught Green development in Anfield. A Castlewood two-bedroom apartment costs just £79,950 and new releases of the Castlewood are now available. The apartments, which offer private courtyard parking, have a contemporary open plan lounge/dining and kitchen area, the latter of which has a stainless steel kitchen appliance package. There is also a master bedroom with an en-suite. Says Miller Homes sales manager Helen Toher-Horne: “The shortage of housing supply for first-time buyers has seen large rises in rental prices, so now is the time for house hunters and people renting to consider their options. “Purchasing a new home now while there is good value to be found, I believe, will prove to be a better medium to long term investment than renting.” Since the financial crisis struck nearly four years ago, when house prices dropped by almost 14%, the

Land Registry data shows that average house prices have rebounded and rose by nearly 12% to February 2010. Since then the market has remained fairly static, mainly as a result of a lack of mortgage products. This is now changing with new competitive mortgage products. The government is on the record as stating that there was a need to increase housing supply by 200,000 homes each year up to 2016 to meet the population needs and, on the basis of supply and demand, suppress house price rises. Last year there were just 102,830 new homes built. “Pundits are now suggesting that it is not a question of ‘if ’ but ‘when’ house prices will rise. The message is clear; if you wait to see the market rise is confirmed it will be too late to get the best bargain,” says Helen. For full details of the ‘Castlewood’ and the choice of apartments and houses available, call into the Connaught Green marketing suite, located off Belmont Road, Anfield, L6 4EL. It is open Thursday to Monday inclusive, from 10.30am to 5.30pm. Or call 0800 840 8526 or email: connaughtgreen @miller.co.uk

My First

HOME

Merseyside artist Claire Wright Where was the family home where you grew up and what was it like? I was brought up in south east London by Dublin parents. What is your clearest memory of the house? We lived in a Victorian house in south east London. My clearest memory of my house then was the dining room which was burgundy in colour and had a big wooden dining able in the middle (because there were nine of us !) and cowboy ranch doors in the kitchen which disguised the boiler – and was a great hiding place if you had been naughty ! Where was the first house you bought yourself and what did it cost? The first house I bought with my husband (which I didn’t move into until my wedding night – mainly due to the hotel putting someone else in the honeymoon suite!) was in Roselea drive in Crossens, Southport and cost us £27,500 in 1993. What made you want to buy it? It had potential for Chris and I to do it up, sell it quickly and help us move up the ladder and, also, because the whole of Roselea Drive like many streets in Crossens/ Churchtown area had been built by the Ball family to which my husband is related. What are the important things you look for when buying a house? South facing – sunsets should be appreciated (as an ex-seafarer one of the most beautiful experiences at sea was sunrise and sunset): great features – beautiful coving, staircases and stained glass windows. As someone with no building experience I always look for 'no structural defects' on surveys . I can visualise finished rooms in mixes of modern with Victorian or Edwardian as I walk around a wreck of a house. Luckily my husband Chris designed kitchens and entertainment rooms for many years and sees the practical angle to room layouts immediately so we make a good combination. Are you a DIY trier or do you leave it to the experts? Having had a very practical mother and father in DIY and restoration gave me my creative streak. I was always spraying things, painting, gardening, flower arranging and cooking. What is the one thing you love most about your current home? Our garden primarily. My husband built a great decking area in our garden that is on two levels with spotlights and complemented with great garden furniture from Taskers. It is a great place to finish your working day when the weather permits.

Coastal decor never sails out of fashion, but this year the tide's turned. Gabrielle Fagan explores the new take on seaside style

UST the word ‘seaside’ summons up pleasing thoughts of blue skies, sandy beaches and relaxed living. Small wonder then that coastal style, with its crisp blue and white colour scheme teamed with memory-evoking accessories from driftwood to sailing prints, is an enduring favourite for rooms. But every look needs refreshing or it will become as limp as last year's seaweed, and this year coastal has changed tack and sailed upmarket. More understated and chic, it conjures the look of a luxury seaside sanctuary rather than a beach hut. That doesn’t put it out of reach if you’re on a budget, it just means having a light hand on the decor tiller and opting instead to invest in a scheme which will last all year, not just a summer. “For a modern, stylish interpretation of this classic theme, I’d advise making only subtle additions to a room rather than giving it a complete overhaul,” says Marianne Richards, style advisor for HomeSense. “This creates a more sophisticated effect, as opposed to obviously following a theme, and means it will ultimately have greater longevity.” The famous beachside homes in New England’s Hamptons region prove that shoreside style can be charming and elegant, and it’s their design-conscious ethos which has, in part, inspired the latest interpretation. “Tranquility and informality is still at the heart of this look – but the choice is broad,” advises Richards. “You can opt for the rich colours of the Mediterranean

with shades of deep cobalt, aquamarine and splashes of sunflower yellow or pick up on our own calming coastal shades of cream, sand, pale blue and sea green. “Wooden floors with soft rugs, white-painted furniture, large, linen-covered sofas, and windows simply dressed with cotton or linen curtains to allow maximum light are other essential ingredients for a seaside sanctuary.”

Blue and white are keynote colours for any ‘seaside’ room but there’s a whole raft of ways to feature them. If you’re opting for the updated classic New England look, wallpaper is a smart choice. A blue and white stripe pattern – think deckchairs and awnings – is perfect, and using a vertical stripe will give the illusion of more height to a room. Laura Ashley has a Lille Stripe paper, from £16 a roll, while Ralph Lauren Home has a horizontal stripe paper,

Spalding Stripe, £29 for a 10m roll. Alternatively, add summery blue shades to walls, such as a light Cornish Cloud blue or a deep Blue Anchor, both £24.95 for 2.5l in the Albany Traditions range, from Brewers.

Nautical but nice is the essence of seaside rooms which should be comfortable, welcoming and have a fresh ‘spick and span’ feel. “There’s universal appeal about beach house interiors as they embody a lifestyle that’s all about kicking back, living with nature, and losing the stresses and strains of city life,” says Debbie McKeegan founder of Digetex. “The secret to achieving beach

How to... spruce up the garage door GIVE your garage door a smart new look with these top tips. It’s a prominent feature at the front of your home, so make sure it doesn’t let you down.

IF you’re in the market ● for a new drill-driver, look no further than the

It offers everything that bigger drill-drivers do, but it’s small and lightweight and so really nice to use. It features a handy work light, two gears, an impressive 20 torque settings, a sensitive trigger, one-touch forward and reverse, and rubberised grips. I particularly like the integrated magnetic bit holder – no more trying to find your missing bit – and the fact that you get two batteries – one charge is enough to drive up to 257 screws into wood. The environmentally friendly 10.8V lithium-ion batteries charge in just 30 minutes, but if you’re in the middle of a job and can’t wait, having a spare is invaluable – and they can be used in other tools in the range. ● Prepare the door by rubbing it down with coarse sandpaper or a wire brush, ensuring you remove any unstable paint. Use a sugar-soap solution to clean off the sanding dust and any grease and dirt, then wash the door down with clean water. Ensure it’s completely dry before painting it. ● When painting outside, try to make sure the temperature’s between 8ºC and 25ºC, otherwise you may have problems getting a good finish (painting in the rain is obviously a no-no). Don’t forget to cover the ground under the door, and the surrounding area, with dust-sheets, old curtains, or newspaper. ● Start by opening the door and painting the edges that can’t be seen when it’s shut. Once they’re dry, close the door and paint the front, working your way down in sections until the whole door’s done. ● Apply one thin coat to begin with, followed by a second (if necessary), being careful to stop the paint from running. Leave the first coat to dry for the time specified on the tin before doing the second. ● zFor best results, use a specialist paint. Try Hammerite Garage Door Paint, £11.79 for 750ml. ... to letting

I would happily live in any one of my rental properties by JANET TANSLEY

F

ROM selling goods to selling homes, Liverpool business man John Burns has established himself as a master of trades over the last 25 years. Armed with a huge amount of savvy and oodles of determination, the 41-year-old from Calderstones has risen from market trader to student property developer. “And I can happily say I would live in each property myself,” says John. “It gives me a huge pleasure to see the delight of the students and their parents when they are given the keys – and in most cases the students ask to re-let for the following years. “I have a great landlord tenant relationship with them all – even if it does sometimes slip into a parental role with the new students!” Businessman and entrepreneur John certainly isn’t work shy. After completing his O levels at Highfield comprehensive in May 1986, aged 16, John, armed with a pasting table and stock bought on a sale or return basis, fought his way into the territorial world of the market traders at Great Homer Street Market. “Quite literally” John, from Calderstones, smiles. “I was young and passionate and determined for a pitch.” Soon a small pitch evolved into a 16ft pitch ‘along the back wall’, a well known favourable spot in the market, and four shops which John rented out. “There was a chemist, a dentist, a cushion shop occupied by good friend Tony Caldeira and Bulletproof, formerly occupied by Jeff Pearce, of Jeffs of Bold Street. I’m proud to be associated with an institution that has produced some great local business people,” says John. “I even remember when Abigail Clancy worked in one of my shops that I rented out to Bulletproof.” Although he sold a variety of wares from ‘fig rolls to toilet rolls’, John’s biggest line was his sportswear throughout the 1990s, which he nicknamed ‘Liverpool’s uniform’. But if this sounds impressive it wasn’t the only thing keeping a young John busy. Rewind back to the summer of ‘86, after John started his 12 hour market days, (Saturdays at Great Homer Street and Sundays at the Heritage), he won a full time joinery apprenticeship with Liverpool City Council, a course that was to send him on another route entirely. “It was the biggest intake of

apprenticeships for Liverpool City Council, under Derek Hatton’s leadership,” says John. “My dad is a self-employed joiner and shop fitter by trade so by the age of eight I was already helping out, carrying glass and glazing windows. “Joinery has always been in me.” Inspired by his dad’s strong work ethic, in 1989 a 19-year-old John bought his first property on Eastdale Road, Liverpool 15. “I bought it to sell but three times the sale fell through due to the property crash. In hindsight I’m glad as I eventually rented it out to four student doctors so it was my first insight, not to mention a huge learning curve, into the complex world of tenants and landlords.” Since then, John’s South Liverpool portfolio has grown into residential, commercial, garage and student rentals, and he is director of J.P.B Estates Ltd and Orton Developments Ltd. In 2003, John decided to focus more on the student market. “All our refurbishments are 100% back to the brickwork, done to the highest standard with brand new furnishings. We’re continually improving. And it’s not only the tenants and their guardians who are impressed. In November last year, John purchased a three bedroomed terraced house in a popular South Liverpool student area at a Venmore property auction, unaware the popular BBC daytime programme, Homes Under the Hammer, had filmed the purchase. “On signing the contract I was approached by a crew member who asked if I’d be happy to feature on the show. I explained my plans were to rip it out and convert it into a five bedroom, two bathroom student house. “They were intrigued, I was intrigued; so I said yes!” John and his team turned the house around in 46 working days. “The crew filmed the first part in December on gaining the keys and completed the second part of filming in March. They seemed genuinely impressed at ‘the reveal’ and commented that in the 14 series’ they had filmed; it was one of the best. To hear such a great accolade from industry professionals means a lot.” John has also recently qualified for Liverpool Student Homes’ gold standard award. He has worked hard to get where he is but it’s not just effort that spurs him on. Says John: “I really do love my job.”

CANNES Film Festival might have finished for another year, but interest in property in the area shows no sign of waning. Despite its tiny size, Cannes, on the French Riviera, accounts for 1% of the world’s tourism – an astonishing achievement for such a small city. So it is no surprise that there is a thriving rental market in the area. Charlie Williams is business development manager of Terresens, a leading leaseback property developer. Says Charlie:

“In my opinion, those looking to buy a property for personal use or to rent out can do no better than Cannes. “Due to its notoriety many would expect property in Cannes to come complete with a designer price tag, but this isn't always the case.” Hotly anticipated in the region was the recent release of Residence le Six, a selection of fully furnished studios and one bedroom apartments with parking available, from just 150,000 euros. Located in Le Cannet, the

Government to provide loans to get buyers on property ladder A NEW scheme aimed at helping first-time buyers to get a foot on the property ladder has been launched by the Government. FirstBuy will see the Government and housebuilders provide buyers with an equity loan of up to 20%, meaning potential buyers will have to put up a 5% deposit to qualify for a 75% mortgage. The Government will be making some £500m available across the UK over the next two years to fund FirstBuy, which it is expected will help some 10,000 people in England alone to secure their first home. Some 100 housebuilders have signed up to the scheme so far,

including Persimmon, Barratt, Bovis and Galliford Try. Meanwhile banks who have signed up to offer the 75% mortgages include Halifax, Nationwide, Barclays and the Melton Mowbray building society. Young buyers have been increasingly turning to financial help from their parents in order to secure their first home due to the need for large deposits. Housing Minister Grant Shapps explains: “With 80% of young first-time buyers depending on parental help, I am determined that we pull out all the stops to help those who want to take their first steps onto the property ladder.”

Loans will be repaid on resale of the property, with the Government’s share available for reinvestment in more affordable housing. The first homes are expected to come on stream in September this year. The maximum home value applicable under the FirstBuy scheme has been set at £280,000, but this could increase to £300,000 in exceptional circumstances, says a spokeswoman from the Department for Communities and Local Government said. There is also an income limit of £60,000 for people applying for the scheme.

GUIDE ... to neighbourhoods Why live in... Freshfield

Saturday, June 25, 2011

PROPERTY 9

IDYLL: Freshfield beach is the perfect place for a stroll. Inset top, Shops near Freshfield train station. Inset bottom, houses in the area

F

RESHFIELD in Formby is home to some of the most affluent residents in Merseyside. In 2009 Shireburn Road was named the priciest road in the county, with house prices averaging £1,159,831 and local celebrities, footballers, politicians and wealthy businessmen calling the area their home. But on further inspection you soon realise that you too can live in Freshfield without having to break the bank or win the lottery! You only have to look at the geography of the area to realise why Freshfield is so desirable among the rich and famous – not to mention the throngs of tourists who flock to the place every summer. Nearby lies the picturesque Formby Woods – a community forest established as a National Trust reserve for the rare red squirrel, which is listed on the endangered species list.

The area is still one of only a handful of sites in Britain where the adorable creature can be found. There are also the miles of golden beaches and sand dunes close by, which offer the perfect opportunity for walking, running and picnics. In terms of amenities, Freshfield has them in abundance. The area is served by a number of local shops, restaurants, schools, social clubs and pubs. That’s not to mention nearby Formby town centre, locally known as The Village, which although not a huge town, stills provides enough coffee houses, independent stores and high street shops to keep you engrossed for an afternoon. Freshfield is also served by several supermarkets, a post office and recently-built swimming pool and leisure centre. In terms of transport, the area has a regular bus

service and Freshfield railway station provides easy commuting to Southport, Liverpool and further afield. The Formby Bypass (A565) also offers perfect access to the M58 and M57. So what do you get for your money? There is a lot on offer in the area, and there is a vast difference between price tags at either end of the scale. It all depends on what you’re after and how much you’re prepared to spend. According to the latest figures on property website Home.co.uk for the Freshfield area, the average asking price for a property is £405,013. Prices range from £174,718 for a flat to £150,979 for a terrace, £223,012 for a semidetached and £569,988 for a detached. So don’t write Freshfield off as simply a playground for the rich and famous. You never know, you might just become their neighbours!

Radio panel tackles Are you having trouble identifying the pests in your garden? Even BBC Gardeners’ Question Time panellists don’t always get it right, Hannah Stephenson discovers

S

O MANY of us turn detective at this time of year, trying to identify the pests which have feasted on our flowers or decimated our crops. But even the experts can get it wrong. Only last week at BBC Gardeners’ World Live in Birmingham, the panellists from BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time told one gardener that gypsy moth was likely to be the culprit behind the webbing which appeared on, and caterpillars which defoliated, his cotoneaster. However, further investigation revealed it wasn’t likely to be the source of the problem, as these insects are so rare in this country. RHS entomologist Andrew Salisbury reckons it’s much more likely to be the hawthorn webber moth, which is much more common in Britain. The affected parts of the plant are covered in silk webbing produced by the caterpillars so, at first sight, it could be mistaken for the work of spiders. The only control is to inspect plants for signs of webbing and damage in late spring and late summer. If the infestation is confined to a few shoots, prune them out. Otherwise, you may need to use an insecticide, such as pyrethrum. Thankfully, many pest problems are easier to identify. Whitefly, for instance, are a familiar sight on ornamental plants and vegetables. These white-winged insects suck sap from underneath leaves and the foliage becomes coated with a black sooty mould. Hanging sticky traps among plants and using organic sprays based on vegetable oils or fatty acids can minimise the problem. Matthew Biggs, a panellist Gardeners’ Question Time, suggests: “One novel method of removal is to knock the leaves and suck up the whitefly with a vacuum cleaner as they fly up into the air.” Another common problem is scale insects, the sap-suckers found on the leaves and stems of a range

UNDER THREAT: Gypsy Moths can be a problem but are rare whereas whitefly is quite common. Inset, a red spider mite. of plants, which hide under protective shells which vary in shape and colour. Again, plants are weakened and ’honeydew’ secretions on leaves become affected by a black sooty mould, particularly in damp weather. To control scale insects on fruit trees and roses, treat them with an environmentally friendly winter wash in early winter. Ornamental plants can be sprayed with organic sprays. Vine weevil is another scourge of gardeners, eating the roots of plants so that by the time the plants start to wilt, there’s no going back. Adults are about 10mm (1/2in) long, black with pale orange spots. They hide in the dark during the day but move slowly on leaves at night, eating notches in leaf margins. The plump white larvae mainly feed on the roots of containerised plants which simply wilt and die. In spring and summer, take a

torch in the garden to check plants, pick off adult weevils and crush them. Encourage natural enemies. Vine weevils and their grubs are eaten by a variety of

predators such as birds, frogs, toads, shrews, hedgehogs and predatory ground beetles. A biological control of the larvae is available as a microscopic pathogenic nematode (Steinernema kraussei), which can be purchased from suppliers of biological controls. Apply it in August or early September when the soil temperature is warm enough for the nematode to be effective (5-20ºC/41-68ºF) and before the vine weevil grubs have grown large enough to cause serious damage. If your detective skills aren’t great and you’re struggling to identify the pests attacking your plants, cut off a piece of plant with the offending bug, pop it in a sealed container or bag and take it to your garden centre where staff should be able to help.

Best Of The Bunch Campanula (bellflower) THESE summer-flowering favourites come in a range of sizes and colours, but among the most popular are the Canterbury Bells (C. medium) and the milky bellflower, C. lactiflora, an upright, branching type which produces sprays of bell-shaped flowers from early summer to early autumn. Its flowers are in shades of white to pale blue, lilac-blue or violet and it grows to 1.5m (5ft). If you want a smaller type, C. carpatica ’Blaue Clips’ is a superb, compact campanula which flowers throughout summer, producing masses of blue, upright, bellflowers. It thrives in sun or shade and is ideal for rockeries, borders and pots. Campanulas need a good moist and well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter mixed in. They can usually tolerate full sun as long as the soil is not dry, but generally semi-shade is preferred.

Grow Your Own tomatoes

YOUR tomatoes should be growing fast now, especially with the warm spring we had. Some will already be producing flowers and needing tying in to their stakes at regular intervals. Regular watering – but not waterlogging – is vital. If you water spasmodically, drenching the plant one day and then leaving it to dry out, the fruits are likely to split at the bottom or you’ll get blossom-end rot, where the bottom of the fruit goes brown, hard and inedible. Water the soil, not the plant, as tomato leaves and stems hate getting wet. Continue to pinch out any shoots that

develop between stem and main branches, as they take up valuable energy from the developing fruit. Cut off the top of plants, certainly of outdoor ones, when six trusses of fruit have begun to set, to help concentrate the plant’s energies. Feed plants with a tomato feed high in potassium fertiliser when the plants are beginning to fruit. Be warned that allowing your tomato plants to sit in cold water in a plant saucer is likely to make them vulnerable to fungal diseases such as tomato blight, the bane of every tomato grower’s life.

Things to do this week

PROTECTION: A woman spraying plants in her garden to keep pests at bay

■ Water hanging baskets and containers daily to stop them drying out and deadhead your bedding plants regularly. ■ Prune early-flowering shrubs such as lilac and deutzia which have finished flowering. ■ Make a sowing of winter-flowering pansies for a display next winter or spring. ■ Remove growing points from early peas which have finished flowering to concentrate energies on pod production.

■ Boost gladioli with a liquid feed. ■ Remove young green gooseberries for cooking or preserving, leaving enough to mature for dessert. ■ Deadhead roses to encourage repeat flowering unless the roses are being grown for the colour and profusion of their hips. ■ Sow turnips to produce a crop in autumn. ■ Make sure pond levels are kept topped up.

Get on the move with McCathy & stone

RETIREMENT developer, McCarthy & Stone has become the first company in the building industry to launch its own free, professional removals service in partnership with moving specialist, House to Home UK. The company has unveiled its first fleet of branded removal vans. Through the scheme, an experienced removals team will de-clutter the purchaser’s property, taking any unwanted items to charity and will provide assistance with both the packing and unpacking. The new service is free and is available to anyone who buys a brand new McCarthy & Stone apartment at either Forest Court in Chester, Jessop Court in Little Sutton, Bernard Court in Holmes Chapel, Beatty Court in Nantwich, or Reynolds Court in Woolton, pictured. Fiona Brooks, Regional Sales and Marketing Director for McCarthy & Stone, explains: “We know that moving home can be an overwhelming experience. Many of our purchasers are downsizing to a lower maintenance property, often after living in the family home for many years, and as such packing and getting rid of unwanted furniture is no small task. The launch of our free removals service this week means residents can now make the transition from their old property to their new one as easy and as stress-free as possible.”

HIS weekend sees Lovell Homes devoting a whole weekend to giving advice to first time buyers in Birkenhead. Would-be home owners can find out everything they need to know about buying a home at Sevenoaks today and tomorrow, where they can also talk to an independent financial advisor about their mortgage options. Elaine Taylor, regional sales manager for Lovell, said: “We have a number of ways we can help first time buyers. NE of the North West’s leading housebuilders is offering to reward customers for their loyalty by giving them thousands of pounds off their new home when they come back to buy for a second or third time. David Wilson Homes North West is finding an increasing number of buyers returning to purchase homes from the company when the time comes to move. For example, when people with growing families need more space or older couples look to down-size after the children leave home. “Brand loyalty is something usually associated with cars, newspapers and football clubs,” said Steve Jackson, sales director at David Wilson Homes North West. “But not everyone realises that at David Wilson Homes North West we have customers who return to buy from us a second, third or even fourth time when they need to move on. Our buyers tell us they like the style and quality of our new homes, which is very pleasing.” He added: “We pride ourselves on always offering value for money, the highest standards of workmanship and first-class customer service. We also guarantee the fixtures and fittings in place at the time of purchase for five years.”
