Runners-up were Mick Linford, a three-time winner of the event, and Steve Croughan who managed to achieve 102.21mpg in a Kia Rio 1.1 CRDi 1 Eco, a 15.75 per cent increase. Third spot was taken by a Peugeot 208 e-Hdi EGC driven by Chris Russon and Kevin Jones who averaged 93.4 to the gallon beating the official 83.1mpg by some 12 per cent. The 208 driven by Russon and Jones was a three-door 1.4-litre e-HDI diesel in mid-range Active trim priced at £14,195 and fitted with Peugeot’s five speed electronic gearbox which adds £700 to the price compared to a manual but significantly improves fuel efficiency. Officially the car has a combined fuel economy of 83.1mpg and with emissions of just 87g/km it is one of the cleanest cars on the road. Eco-drivers smash the 100mpg barrier by CHRIS RUSSON has to be kept depressed while stationary. As soon as it is released the engine sparks back into life. The time the engine is off is displayed in the trip computer and during more than 11 hours at the wheel the system saved almost 20 minutes worth of fuel. At the end of the run the car had clocked up 364 miles at an average speed of 32mph and had used just 3.91 gallons of fuel – an average of 93.4mpg and a 12 per cent improvement over the official economy figure. The MPG Marathon is regarded as Britain’s toughest real world fuel economy challenge and this year’s event involved six stages of driving through Wales and the Cotswolds.
Event organiser Ross Durkin said: “We aim to make the MPG Marathon as representative of everyday driving as possible. “The route is meticulously planned and all cars taking part in the event were fitted with TRACKER satellite tracking

technology to ensure that all drivers follow the prescribed course.” The best performing van was a Citroen Nemo Hdi 75 driven by John Kendall and Paul Nieuwenhuis who averaged 77.51mpg – an improvement of 14.7mpg over the official fuel figure. “The real value of the MPG Marathon is that it highlights the fuel – and hence emissions – savings that can be achieved by any driver of any vehicle,” added Durkin. “The drivers had strict time limits to make sure they kept up with traffic and had a number of hold-ups to deal with along the way. “Motorists should see their published fuel consumption figures as a target to beat, not the maximum achievable.”

HE car chase from The Italian Job has been voted number one in a poll of favourite movie motoring scenes. The clip involving a team of Minis racing through the drains under Turin beat the Ford Mustang – Dodge Charger chase from the 1960s film Bullitt in the Classic Film Festival poll. In celebration of the best classic motoring films of all time, more than 1,700 fans voted for their favourites in six categories.
The Italian Job and Bullitt took first and second place in the favourite classic motoring movie category while the Aston Martin in Goldfinger and Mini in The Italian Job were voted favourite classic cars in the movies.
The Triumph in The Great Escape and the Harley Davidson in Easy Rider voted favourite classic motorbikes in the movies. In the category for the favourite classic vehicle on television the Jaguar MK2 in Inspector Morse came out on top with the Audi quattro in Ashes to Ashes second. The poll was carried out for insurance specialists Footman James as part of its plans for the Footman James Classic Motor Show which takes place at the NEC Birmingham from November 16-18. A selection of the top films in each category will be shown as a Classic Film Festival series at Birmingham’s Electric Cinema, the oldest working cinema in the UK, in the weeks leading up to the show.

SOLID indication of a car’s popularity and success is the number of versions there are to choose from. In the case of the Ellesmere Port-built Vauxhall Astra it’s massive – 65 to be exact, and that’s just for the hatchback, never mind the Sports Tourer and GTC coupe models. But then the latest generation Astra is a far better car than its predecessor in every way, from looks and driving to layout and equipment. No wonder then that it continues to prove a hit with both families and business drivers, 33 years down the line. Once a pretty anonymous place to spend any time, the Astra’s cabin has a brighter, more upmarket feel to it these days. Okay, the black and grey interior with brushed alloy-effect trim

highlights can’t match some of the funkier offerings out there, but the dash is well laid out, instruments accessible and the fabric seats feel comfortable and hard wearing. Need to shift a shedload of gear, well a reasonable boot capacity of 370 litres can expand to cope with the fishing or golf gear by folding the 60/40 rear seats down. Best of all though is rear comfort as there’s sufficient space for three adults in the back, a rare luxury in larger models let alone in a small family car. It’s a comfort that translates to
the road too as the Astra is a terrific motorway car with tip-top ride quality and wind noise insulation, even on the speed limit, and an ability to smooth out rough road surfaces. Of course the engine helps and the tested hatchback featured the mid-range 1.7-litre capacity unit of the three diesel powerplants in the line-up, with a useful 130PS of punch. As a lean and green ecoFLEX model the car boasts Start/Stop technology to help bring emissions down to a tax-busting 99g/km, providing extra appeal to business users, and zero road tax. The official Combined fuel consumption figure is a seriously impressive 76.3 miles per gallon – better than both the 110 and 125PS output diesels – though it will take a far more committed eco driver than me to get close to that number. Back to the future for Volkswagen Tiguan IT’S a case of back to the future for Volkswagen as the German manufacturer adds a stylish new R-Line trim grade to its Tiguan compact SUV line-up. Since joining the VW stable four years ago the Tiguan has become the fourth best-selling Volkswagen after the Golf, Polo
and Passat. And in the first generation the R-Line was one of the most popular Tiguan models, accounting for nearly 20 per cent of the total sales. Now renewed for the latest model, it is predicted to be the choice of a quarter of Tiguan
customers. R-Line is based on the upmarket SE trim level but adds bi-xenon headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, is painted in Sterling Silver with black wheel arch extensions and has body-coloured front and rear ‘R’ design bumpers and rear spoiler.
