A COMPACT luxury car is to be revealed as a concept model by Infiniti at next month’s Geneva Motor Show. The Etherea is no bigger than a Ford Focus but could become the entry level model for the brand. Infiniti, the luxury arm of Nissan, is currently establishing itself in the UK with a line-up of large luxury saloons and SUVs. “Etherea is about a new type of luxury for younger buyers,” said Toru Saito, corporate vice president and leader of the global Infiniti business unit. “It is not just a smaller version of a typically conservative and traditional luxury car.” At the moment Infiniti has dealerships in Birmingham, Glasgow, Reading and London and plans to expand its network in the coming months. The current Infiniti range has prices running from £31,000 to almost £55,000.
AN electric ● version of Honda’s Jazz
supermini will be shown as a concept car at the Geneva Motor Show next month. The Jazz has just been relaunched as a hybrid in the UK and now it is at the centre of Honda’s plans for zero emission motoring. Also at Geneva the Japanese car maker will be displaying a plug-in hybrid Jazz which can be driven purely on electricity as well as on a conventional engine. The two Jazz concepts will be appearing alongside the latest Accord which is making its debut at the show.

ENERAL Motors in Europe thought it would be a good idea to launch the new Antara SUV on the bonny banks of Loch Lomond but it got less than a warm welcome in Scotland. Four inches of snow and a cold drizzle greeted drivers in the beautiful Queen Elizabeth Forest Park where a small but challenging off-road course had been set up to test the newcomer from Vauxhall. It’s a big crossover vehicle which will spend the majority of its time on tarmac but if you want to take it onto the tough stuff I can vouch for its capability. You can choose the Antara in two or four-wheel-drive guise and with two gutsy 2.2 diesel engines, one developing a useful 163bhp and the other a more powerful 184bhp. With fuel consumption of 44.8mpg, CO2 emissions of 167g/km combined with a 9.9-second 0-60mph time and top speed of 117mph, the powertrain offers an excellent blend of performance and
by STEWART SMITH efficiency. The 184bhp diesel comes standard with all-wheel drive and is available with both transmissions. Performance is up, with a 0-60mph time of 9.6 seconds and a top speed of 124mph, with a combined 42.8mpg and CO2 emissions of 175g/km. Both on and off-road these units give instant acceleration and enough power to make overtaking easy. Newly produced six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions are options. I drove both and preferred the auto. I found the manual version, which Vauxhall says 80 per cent of owners will choose, had a stiff and heavy feel. The latest Antara now features refinements to the chassis and active safety includes improvements to the ABS system and the standard fitting of Hill Start Assist which prevents roll-back when driving away on gradients.
On the style front the new Antara’s exterior sports an updated front grille, re-designed fog lights and rear lights with new graphics. It’s a smart piece of kit. Inside, the cabin has been refreshed and has better quality trim and upholstery, instruments with new graphics, a re-designed centre console with extra storage along with a leather trim option called Light Titanium. Improved safety and comfort features include an electric parking brake, a gear display for manual operation
in the automatic variants, deactivation of front and side airbags on the front passenger side to enable mounting of a child safety seat; seat-belt pre-tensioners and belt force limiters for the front passenger. Space is no problem in the Antara. Driver and passengers should have plenty of head, leg and shoulder room and there is ample load space. Out on the open road the Antara handles very well with very little roll on bends and it is very quiet with little wind, road or engine noise.

It’s the kind of motor where long journeys will be comfortable and not tiring. Customers have a choice of three equipment versions: Exclusiv FWD, Exclusiv AWD or SE AWD. All models have a serious amount of kit. The two-wheel-drive Exclusiv FWD has anti-lock brakes, traction control, hill descent and hill start systems, front and side airbags up front, electric parking brake, power windows front and back, air con, tyre repair kit, leather steering wheel, roof rails, heated side mirrors and seat belt pre-tensioners. On sale in April, the entry level Antara 2.2 CDTi 163bhp Exclusiv is priced at £19,995. The top-of-the-range 2.2 CDTi 184 4x4 auto is £26,905. Vauxhall is confident its new Antara will be an attractive proposition in this sector of the market and is predicting 3,000 sales in its first full year. It’s good looking, well screwed together, capable and comes with a lot of equipment.

IN CLOVER: Multiair technology has made a huge difference to the Alfa Romeo MiTo
T
HE number of heads that turn as you cruise by confirm that Alfa Romeo’s mission to make its funky MiTo model the sportiest compact car on the road is still nicely on track. Its styling is distinct, very Italian, and if you spot a MiTo in your rear-view mirror then the feeling can be one of mild intimidation from that menacing Alfa face. But what’s made a real difference to the MiTo, and its ability to attract younger buyers to the marque, is Multiair technology in the shape of two turbocharged versions of the company’s 1.4-litre petrol engine. The 135bhp version of the unit powers the entry level Lusso-trimmed model at £15,045 and £700 more expensive Veloce version while the flagship £17,885 Cloverleaf – a return for the race-bred badge – boasts 170bhp.

So far as Alfa is concerned Multiair allows the company to both bake its cake and eat it. All car makers want stronger performance, lower emissions and better fuel economy – and Alfa’s owners Fiat have cracked it with this technology. In simple terms, more precise control is taken of the quantity and characteristics of the air drawn into the cylinders during the combustion cycle. And in the case of the tested Cloverleaf the result is flexible and responsive, with performance
figures of 0-62mph in 7.5 seconds and a top speed of 136mph. That said, I got nowhere near the claimed average fuel consumption figure of 47.1miles per gallon, returning closer to 34mpg, though CO2 emissions are low for a car of this strength at 139g/km. The now ubiquitous Start&Stop set-up also makes its debut on these models and is allied to a gear shift indicator that discreetly suggests when to change up or down. A spirited and dynamically rewarding car to drive, the Mito benefits greatly from a DNA system offering three distinct personalities tailored to driving style and road conditions. A three-position switch beside the gearlever alters throttle response and steering set-up for sporty Dynamic driving, everyday Normal driving and All-weather low grip conditions. A NEW version of Suzuki’s Splash hatchback will be going on sale in March – with lower CO2 emissions. Powered by a more powerful 1.2-litre VVT petrol engine developing 94PS, the new Splash is capable of averaging 55.4mpg with emissions reduced by
10g/km to 119 for manual versions. The revised Splash will be available with Suzuki’s latest SZ model grading and will also be up for grabs with a 1.0-litre engine. Specification upgrades for the new Splash include fresh interior
seat trim as well as freshly designed alloy wheels for the 1.2-litre SZ4 with prices starting from £9,495 for the 1.0-litre SZ3 model. The new Splash will be on show at the Geneva Motor Show in March where further details will be released.
