ONLY 38 pence of every pound that motorists pay at the pump is for fuel. That’s because 62 per cent is tax in the form of fuel duty and VAT, according to ‘Motoring Taxation and Public Spending’ the latest report from road safety charity the Institute of Advanced Motorists. The report also finds that the percentage of tax paid at the pump rose from 47 per cent in 1980 to 75 per cent in 2000, but it fell to 62 per cent last year as a result of increases in the price of oil. And the IAM says that the government spends only about one-third (£12,752 million) of its total tax revenue from road users (£43,885 million) on roads and local public transport. IAM director Neil Greig said: “Using so little of the taxes motorists pay on road upkeep is plainly unfair. Motorists are also paying the price as Britain’s potholed roads take their toll.”

In some ways production of a four-cylinder diesel Jaguar is all the more remarkable as, for years, the British car maker refused to contemplate ever using a diesel engine as it “didn’t match the Jaguar image”. When it finally relented it was a 2.7-litre six-cylinder unit that went into an XF. Now it’s gone one stage further with a much more compact, four cylinder diesel to address a rapidly expanding market for smaller diesel engines. The new car, available from September, is expected to account for a massive 43 per cent of all XF sales. The introduction of the new engine also heralds a new look XF, both for this smaller diesel and its big brother the 3.0-litre, not to mention the petrol derivatives. The launch of the original XF early in 2008 marked a sea change in Jaguar design
strategy. It finally closed the door on the more traditional Jaguar shape that had evolved over the years in favour of a radical new body, which has proved to be an award-winning best seller. Now Jaguar design guru Ian Callum has waived his magic wand over the car again and given it an even more striking image. Effectively the car has an all-new front end. The bold new look features new slim headlights with dramatic LED daylight running light strips sitting either side of the larger, more upright grille. The deeper front bumper sections with three air dams all make the car look much more macho, with far more road presence, as do the new vents set into the front wings. “We have taken a good looking car and turned the volume up,” was how Andy Whyman, Jaguar’s chief programme engineer, described the design changes. Inside too there have been changes with re-designed
seats to give far more support, a re-styled steering wheel and revised switches, not to mention an all-new colour touch screen built into the dashboard. The launch of the 190bhp, four cylinder diesel XF dramatically expands Jaguar’s sales potential as the new car – now the cheapest in the Jaguar range – is priced from £30,950 compared to the current entry level 3.0-litre diesel at £36,950. Despite the dramatic reduction in engine size the new “baby XF” copes well,
hitting 62 miles per hour in 8.5 seconds on its way to a top speed of 140mph. On the road it feels relaxed yet punchy but while it’s smooth it can never quite match the refinement of the V6 models. The engine is mated to a new seamless eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox offering both Drive and – for more urgent motoring – Sport settings. There are also paddles behind the steering wheel for hands-on driving and unlike on so many cars the number of gears available makes using these well

worthwhile and rewarding. An intelligent Stop-Start system is used for the first time on a Jaguar and is without doubt one of the best on the market, seemingly able to second guess whether a driver is actually going to stop or not. The lighter front end from the use of the smaller engine, is noticeable, but the car handles well and has the ability to instill confidence when pushing hard. Having said that it doesn’t have the Dynamic drive mode that the 3.0-litre cars have so you do lose out a bit. Excellent sound proofing means that from inside the car you get the typical silent cocooning of a Jaguar, but from outside there is no disguising that four-cylinder diesel sound. The bonus for buyers is that you can now have an XF for less, pay fewer visits to the pumps and less tax because the CO2 emissions at 149g/km are significantly lower than on the 3.0-litre models.

STYLE AND SPACE: The Porsche Panamera V6 is a genuine four-seat grand tourer

ONG, sleek and low slung, it’s what fans of one of the world’s most iconic brands have wanted for an age – a Porsche with practicality. It arrived in the grand touring shape of the Panamera, but originally only with a V8 engine beneath the bonnet. So Porsche upped the model’s appeal, lopping the best part of £15,000 off the price in the process, by introducing a V6-powered version – and it was an extremely smart move. The engine is a 3.6-litre unit producing 300bhp, so we aren’t talking limp performance, and because this is a lighter powerplant and is positioned further back in the chassis, it makes for a more even weight ratio. Where the Panamera scores serious points is with its practicality – this is no 2+2 like

some rivals, but a genuine four-seater sports car. The model’s rear space and legroom is little short of magnificent, something that applies to the boot as well. Move inside and the cabin is classic Porsche – sumptuous leather trim, hi-tech gadgetry and easily accessible dials, though there’s actually nowhere to stow a few CD cases. Otherwise, everything is planned to precision with even the cup holders being kept out of sight.
When you need them they extend out from a narrow slot just above the glovebox. And the low seating position and equally low-slung steering wheel impart that feeling of being glued to the road. Fire up the engine and the Panamera V6 may not snarl quite as savagely as the V8, but it still sounds throaty, and as the serious numbers confirm, the car can hit 62mph in a handy 6.3 seconds and boasts the potential for 161mph. Its economy figures are also more impressive than the V8 by five miles per gallon. Standard transmission on the Panamera V6 is a six-speed manual gearbox but it’s worth paying the extra £2,388 for Porsche’s seven-speed Doppelkupplungsgetreib – or PDK double clutch gearbox with its seamless operation. and there’s hardly any body roll. Terrific stuff, but then everything about the Porsche is premium quality, even if adding extra cost options really hike up the price. The tested model had eight extras on it from 19-inch Panamera Turbo wheels at £1,214 to a Rear Comfort Package at £2,395.
Myvi proves a fancy licker BUDGET brand Perodua has lifted the wraps off a pair of new limited edition Myvi supermini models. The Malaysian manufacturer says the new Myvi Jet and Myvi Sport Silver versions will only be available in limited numbers for greater excusivity appeal.
Jet models, which come in ebony black, feature chrome door handles, and ‘Myvi’ motif, remote central locking and 10-spoke silver alloy wheels, with prices from £7,499. The Myvi Sport Silver, meanwhile, has the same specification as the popular Myvi
Sport including a body kit, colour matched side mouldings, chrome door handles and interior carbon fibre finishes. It also includes 10-spoke titanium alloy wheels and is finished in silver. It costs £7,999 in manual transmission. Both limited editions also
