Time to consider your options G

CSE results may be a long way off, but for 16-yearolds now is the time to begin contemplating the future and deciding where you want to go after Year 11. For many, sixth form is an attractive option, and is a major stepping stone between compulsory study and the wider world of work or higher education. You can study A Levels or AS Levels during your sixthform years, in a wide variety of subjects from English to geography, while some colleges will give you the option to choose work-related vocational qualifications instead, from veterinary nursing and childcare to painting and decorating and beauty treatments, which is particularly useful for those with a certain career in mind. Many colleges also offer courses in essential life skills which aim to help you into higher education or into a job when you leave sixth form. You can study towards all these various qualifications at a sixth form college, a school

sixth form, a further education or a specialist college such as an art college, or a dance and drama school. And, while many people choose to continue their education at the school where they took their GCSEs, it is always a good idea to keep your options open and consider what other schools and colleges can offer. After all, you might find that a nearby college offers a wealth of subjects you didn’t realise were open to you. Whatever stage you are at, make sure you think long and hard about what type of course you want to do, what subjects you might need to take for your future study or career path, and whether your chosen school or college can meet these requirements. As colleges vary in size considerably and tend to offer quite different facilities and course options, it is always wise to visit the place before you decide to attend. Many institutions hold open days to allow prospective students the chance to look around, meet the staff and get a feel for the place.

Things to consider include the journey time from the college to your home, and how easy it will be to travel there. Other things to think about include the school environment, whether you like the teaching staff, are the class sizes too large, are the courses suitable for you, and the general amenities, such as computers and sports. Funding is also another area to think about when considering attending sixth form. Can you afford it? If you are aged 16 to 19 and staying on at school full-time to study A Levels or NVQs, you may be able to apply for financial assistance, for example the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA), and financial assistance for transport costs, school meals and books/equipment/field trips, etc. Contact your local council for details, as well as the sixth form of your choice. Just take your time, weigh up the all options and don’t be afraid to ask questions to parents, teachers and current pupils – that way, you really will get the most out of your education.

The college is big enough to offer a wide range of A-Level subjects in a diverse and talented student body, but small enough to know, mentor and guide every one of its pupils. Sixth formers at the college study for the AQA Baccalaureate. This includes a guided independent study project based on a student’s interests, community and leadership involvement, and a rigorous preparation in A Level subjects. Facilities at the school include modern and wellequipped classrooms, science laboratories, design and technology workshops, music and art classrooms, IT resources,

Knowsley Community College

College course at winning FM station T

HE staff and volunteers of Huyton-based radio station 99.8FM KCC Live are celebrating after being announced winners of the Radio Academy’s Nations & Regions award for the North West. This prestigious award gives recognition to radio stations with under 300,000 listeners and qualifies the winning station for entry into the Sony Radio Academy Awards 2013 Station of the Year. So, how would you like to work for this award-winning station? The BTEC Extended Diploma in Radio (Creative Media Production) starts at Knowsley Community College, in September this year. It is targeted mostly at school leavers, aged 16 and 17, and the course is based at 99.8FM KCC Live – the college’s own FM station. It’s pretty exciting to think your work for the station will be enjoyed by 50,000 people, both on FM radio and online. The in-depth radio course is a perfect bridge to university courses or the radio industry. In fact, previous station members have gone on to work in professional radio at the likes of BBC Radio 1 Extra, Radio City, Rock FM,

ON AIR: KCC Live presenter Emma Bassnett with rapper Future, above. Right, Claire Bynoe, of KCC Live, interviewing R&B group Stooshe Real Radio, Key 103, Juice FM and BBC Radio 5 Live. KCC Live’s victory saw them beat every other small station in the north west of England and the Isle of Man, which is a fantastic achievement for the station, run almost entirely by volunteers. They now go on to the National Sony Academy Awards, held in May this year. The award judges described

KCC Live as: “Professional and targeted, while still sounding inclusive, passionate and energetic. “There’s plenty of raw radio talent on display, and the station demonstrates great knowledge of its locality, the young audience it serves, and the specialist music genres it plays.” The delighted station manager, Phil Smith, said: “This

is brilliant news for a small station like ours, and just goes to show how great radio produced by young people can be, when given the opportunity. “We are proud of the radio we produce, offering something completely different and entertaining for young people to listen to across Merseyside. “The award goes a long way

to recognising this, and a big thank you must go out to our listeners and main supporter Knowsley Community College for giving us this opportunity.” Find out more about the radio station by attending the open evening on January 31, 2013 (see advert, below). You will then be invited to a Radio Recruitment Workshop where the selection process for the course will start.

Scholarships are available for those students with predicted outstanding GCSE grades. ● MORE information about the course is available by calling KCC Live on 0151 481 4602, or via Twitter: @kccliveacademy. You will also be able to apply online on the website www.knowsleycollege.ac.uk or through Student Services.
