Snuggle up for winter in your dream home I
T’S that time of year when you start to retire into your home as the winter months approach.
NEWLANDS
So, if you’re spending more time indoors, it only seems right to make yourself as comfortable and content with your surroundings as possible. Whether you fancy a touch of redecoration, adding some simple yet effective finishing touches to a room or a whole new extension, we’ve comprised a selection of helpful hints, tips and advice on how to achieve this season’s must-have home style. Your main rooms are the family focus in the home, a place where people spend most of their time and, usually, the first place guests will see, so you want it to be the perfect cosy retreat, while still staying stylish. Nowadays, sofas are a main focal point in the home, whether you opt for corner groups with big cushions, or something chic with bold designs, sofas certainly make an impact!
But don’t forget about all those extras which complete the whole look. With people spending so much time in the lounge, don’t forget that the digital switchover is fast approaching and, if you need a little advice, check out our page providing helpful information on what you need to stay tuned. If you’re thinking of a big change, installing a new kitchen or bathroom can not only add value but create a whole new feel and look for your home. Why home is where the hearth is W
ITH winter just around the corner, it is time to think about getting your home comfortable and cosy, and what better way to create a warm welcome than with a fireplace?
As well as providing an attractive focal point to a room, a fireplace also serves a practical purpose, offering light and heat. Choosing a fireplace can be daunting with such a huge selection of styles available. Do you want a cool, contemporary look? Or are you hoping for something a little more traditional? How about a real fire? Or are you happy creating the effect of a real fire without the hassle? Don’t be overwhelmed by the choice on offer. Instead, do your homework, take your time and you will get the fireplace of your dreams. Look at the size of your home and the size of room. You want a fireplace that produces the appropriate amount of heat to keep the room cosy but not overheat it. The finish is important. While you might choose a stone fireplace, there are various types and colours to consider. Do you want marble, granite, limestone, or large, natural stones? Consider the architecture of

● There is a wide choice of more traditional fireplaces Picture: Haddonstone available your home and the decor of your room. You want the fireplace to enhance the home’s natural structure and blend with your interior design. In other words, both the exterior and interior of the fireplace should enhance the home. Think about accessories and which ones you would benefit from most. For instance, do you want a fireplace that has a remote control, full speed blower, and so on?
In addition to the fireplace design, you need to think about the mantle, the hearth, and the overall look of the fireplace. The main thing is to take your time when selecting a fireplace. By looking around and considering all your options, you can save money and end up with an amazing heat source for your home. Remember that you want your fireplace to wow people when they walk into your home.
Stylish Fires ● Opt for something contemporary to heat your home

Add warmth and character to any room WE all know fires make beautiful focal points, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be creative with other heating devices in your home. Do your radiators look old, tired and quite dated? Well nowadays there are plenty of other options apart from the standard rectangle, with spirals, tall, thin space-saving radiators and bathroom shelving. There are a whole host of other shapes and sizes so you’re sure to find the perfect one for each room in your home. You can also get your heating appliances in a number of colours, whether it’s the polished stainless steel look, or something on the bright side such as greens and purples, there are plenty of choices available. Even though many people use fires as a feature in their sitting room, central heating is usually used to warm up the house, so maybe we should be paying more attention to those forgotten boxes on the walls and use them to show off our creative side. There are chic stylish radiators, unusual shapes, or Victorian style with great character, so why not take a look around and see what’s available to add a little charm to your walls?

But baby it’s cold outside ...
CREATING that cosy feel in your home is at least one good thing to look forward to in the dark nights approaching. With many of us spending more time indoors to escape the grey clouds and rain, evenings spent relaxing on the sofa can often be a welcome retreat, so make sure your living space is just how you want it. This season, deep reds and purples are key style statements, while chocolate browns and golds are also making an appearance. Remember not to go too dark if you only have a small room, it may be best to keep your walls neutral and accessorise your home for the winter. Cushions are a must to create beautiful features in your room as well as adding a touch of comfort. Throws are also a great buy, whether you choose to have them stylishly draped over your sofa or decide to have it on hand to snuggle under, it’s ideal. Join the space race without moving on I
F you can’t sell your house at the moment, or can’t afford to move to a bigger property, why not maximise the space you already have available to you?
The first thing many people think about when looking to increase space in the home is a physical extension to their property. If you have space to the rear or side of the house then it may be the best way to create extra rooms for your house. This sort of thing can be a big operation though. Apart from bringing the architects in and having your house turned into a building site for a while, you also have to submit your extension plans to the local council and wait on both planning and building regulations permissions. If you are going by the extension route but want to minimise the building work adding a conservatory is a great way of adding another room, which can bring the outside in.
Another popular idea is to create a summer house or other recreational room somewhere within the garden. Unconnected from the house, such a building can give you an extra room to use as an office, a studio or just a place to relax. Some people even opt to create an entire teenage suite to give their kids a little freedom. But you don’t necessarily have to go down the extension route. If you have a loft or a cellar these can be used to better advantage than just places to fill with junk. First things first, get in there and have a big clear out. You may even find things that you can sell on and it’s a good excuse to get yourself over to a car boot sale or make some quick ● Adding a conservatory is a cost-effective way to add cash through eBay. Time to put your foot down in style W
HETHER you prefer the soft feel of a luxurious pile carpet between your toes or the contemporary look of classic wooden, hard-wearing tile or modern laminate flooring, the latest flooring styles ensure there’s something to suit all tastes, budgets and lifestyles. In recent years, natural shades have been the most popular hues for carpets and the trend looks set to continue into 2009/10, with creams,
beiges, chocolates, browns and sandy shades dominating the latest carpet styles. Such classic, neutral colours create a clean, contemporary feel that suits most homes and helps make rooms appear more spacious. A natural coloured carpet also provides the perfect neutral base to experiment with colour in other aspects of your décor, like brightly coloured walls or accessories. Laminate flooring has enjoyed a huge surge in popularity, however, demand for this modern flooring seems
to be declining, with carpet now appearing to be the flooring of choice. Indeed, carpet sales now account for some 50% of the market. Whatever type of carpet you prefer, it’s crucial to choose a style and material that’s suitable for your home and your family’s lifestyle. In areas like hallways, stairs and lounges, which are subject to a lot of wear and tear, opt for high-density pile carpets designed especially for heavy domestic use. carpets with a soft, deep pile provide a more luxurious feel. In the current climate, homeowners want flooring that will stand the test of time– both in terms of quality and style so it’s not surprising then that tiled flooring, which is renowned for being hardwearing, is becoming increasingly popular. Interestingly, many of us are also now choosing to use tiles in rooms other than the usual kitchens and bathrooms. Ceramic, marble and naturalcoloured tiles all look set to be popular in 2009/10, whilst
mosaic glass tiles provide a fashionable alternative for those keen to create striking decorative features in kitchens, bathrooms and ensuites. As we all become more environmentally aware, flooring made with tropical wood like Brazilian rose wood and mangrove is emerging as a sustainable alternative to endangered timber species. Packed with sumptuously rich colours and beautiful patterns, tropical wood flooring is sure to prove popular with homeowners keen to boost
both their green and style credentials. Alternatively, if you’re looking for a more contemporary flooring to complement an edgy décor scheme, then consider the latest clean resin flooring. A highly durable material, resin flooring is a stylish choice and is often available in matt, gloss and even shimmering finishes. Whatever type of flooring you choose, it’s always wise to invest in the best quality that you can afford to ensure it stands the test of time.

HINK of a sofa and the first thing that probably pops into your head is whether it’s comfortable or not.
However, as the biggest piece of furniture in most of our living rooms, sofas are much more than just somewhere cosy to plonk ourselves whilst taking in the latest episode of Corrie – they’re a focal point of the room. Whatever the style of your lounge, the right sofa can make or break the whole look so it’s crucial to choose a settee that’s as chic as it is comfy. For the upcoming year, sofa trends include: natural prints fused with sleek, contemporary design – think bold floral or leaf patterns on minimalist sofas; retro styling given a modern twist – think classic chesterfield with an uber-contemporary patterned fabric; and sofas in rich

purples, reds, browns and burnt oranges. Following on from the success of TV shows like Kirstie’s Homemade Home, it seems we’ve all been inspired by the homemade, countrified look, and upholstery with a distinctly crafty, countrycottage feel is huge this year. In contrast to the earnest appeal of country-cottage-style upholstery, all-white rooms are another of 2009/10’s main trends. Sleek, chic and oh-sominimalist, an all white room is undeniably tranquil and stylish. Whether you opt for a white leather or fabric sofa, this style is great for those who favour the clutter-free, contemporary look. However, if you feel an all white room is a bit too clinical for your tastes,
● Traditional furniture gets a contemporary twist this year Picture: John Lewis
why not use a white sofa to balance out bright accessories or a boldly wallpapered accent wall? Perhaps in response to the grey and oh-so-gloomy current climate, designers have also favoured bold and bright upholstery for the coming season, with vivaciously vibrant sofas featuring in many 2009/10 collections. To adopt this look for your home, the key is to keep the rest of your décor quite simple, so as not to clash with your dazzlingly bright statement sofa. More subtle 2009/10 design trends include sofas with softly rounded edges to create a plush, comfortable feel; vintage-inspired floral prints and sofas with retro shapes – think of the iconic 60s egg chairs with contemporary upholstery. Whatever the style of your lounge, with so many new and exciting styles to choose from, you’re sure to find the right sofa for your home amidst the latest collections.

Homestyle Are you ready for the big digital switchover WITH just six weeks to go until the digital switchover begins in the North West, are you ready? Firstly, don’t panic, you don’t have to rush out and buy a brand new, expensive flat screen TV (although I’m sure it’d be nice!), most people can still use the TV they have. Plus most people are already tuned in and won’t have to do a thing. The digital switchover will simply see analogue channels switched off, starting November 4 and being permanently switched off from December 2, and will be replaced with digital TV, meaning crisper pictures, better reception and a greater choice of channels. Many people are already using digital whether they have cable TV, satellite TV or a digital/Freeview box connected to their existing TV, if so you won’t have to make any changes. Anyone buying new TV equipment should look for
the ‘digital tick’ logo which identifies equipment designed to work before, during and after switchover. Remember though, depending on where you live the signal strength will be different so even if you opt for a new TV with freeview built in, or a digital box you will probably still need a digital aerial in your loft or on the outside of your home to get all the channels without any interference. This doesn’t apply if you get/have cable or satellite TV. There are three main ways to bring digital into your life – subscription and nonsubscription options available: ● Convert your existing TV with a digital set-top box ● Get a service like satellite, cable or broadband TV installed for you ● Get a new TV with digital built-in (eg Freeview, Freesat) ● For more information call Digital UK on 08456 50 50 50, or log on to www.digitaluk.co.uk or for the Switchover Help Scheme for those over 75, in a
care home, on disability benefits or registered blind or partially sighted, call 0800 40 85 906 or visit www.helpscheme.co.uk ● The switchover roadshow is travelling around the North West and, on September 28, will be in Chapel Street, Southport, from 9am to 5pm.
● Take a good look around your property or work place and try to spot any weaknesses. Would-be thieves can take advantage of any opportunity, so it's essential to carry out a thorough evaluation

Keep the burglars out in the cold W
ITH reports of burglaries and break-ins seemingly on the rise, making your house secure can seem like a daunting process.
Fortunately burglary is one of the easiest crimes to prevent and, by taking a few simple precautions to improve your home or work security, you can dramatically reduce the risk of falling victim to this crime. At home, start by taking a good look around your property and try to spot any weaknesses. Perhaps your old front door has seen better days? Or maybe you've accidentally left a ladder in the back garden? Would-be thieves can take advantage of any opportunity so it's essential to carry out a thorough evaluation. Windows and doors are of course the most common entry points for burglars so it's important to fit all external doors and windows with strong locks and keep them closed when you’re in the garden or not at home. 'Bump proof' locks in particular are becomingly increasingly popular and can help protect against 'bump keys' which allow thieves to open a wide range of locks without any sign of forced entry. It could even be worth investing in a set of new windows and doors. Many new models feature stronger laminated glass and thicker woods or UPVC – just remember to make sure that they are certified to British Standard BS7950 (windows) or PAS 24-1 (doors). Easy steps such as keeping your garage and shed locked at all times can also protect your bikes and tools. And it's well worth investing in an
ultra-violet marker to write on your valuables, as well as timers for your light switches to give the impression that there's someone at home, even if you're away. For those who prefer the modern look, contemporary kitchens are tipped to remain one of the main trends for 2009 and a stylish new kitchen suite is an instant way to give your home that distinctly designer feel.
● High gloss units are one of the biggest kitchen trends this year Key styles include sleek granite worktops, dark wood units (great for hiding marks) and high gloss units which are an excellent choice for more compact kitchens thanks to their reflective surfaces. Black and white – once synonymous with the 80s – is also back with a modern day twist or you could even try mixing your kitchen units to achieve a unique, slightly quirky style. Not a look for the fainthearted, make the most of this highly individual trend by keeping the same door fronts and sticking to just two main colours with a neutral worktop.
Alternatively, sophisticated country-chic kitchens are also a hugely popular trend for more period properties and instantly create a warm, homely atmosphere. From rustic oaks, pines and exposed brick to sumptuous ivory units, vintage-style Belfast sinks and hand-painted units that create a bespoke look, it's a classic style that you can rely on to stand the test of time. In addition, state-of-theart energy-efficient appliances and eco-friendly, sustainable materials are at the top of any clever kitchen shopper's list and,
Picture: B&Q
whether it's reconstituted wood or recycled-glass splash back tiles, it couldn't be easier – or more stylish – to do your bit. If you don't have the cash to invest in a new kitchen there's no need to miss out either. Iconic, retro-style appliances, statement cooker hoods or bold and printed tiles are a fantastic way to bring your kitchen bang up to date. So, whether you fancy an ultra modern kitchen to test out your culinary skills or need a family-friendly space, there's something to suit every home, whatever your budget.

How to create a place for everything W
E all enjoy a good night’s sleep, but if you have to battle past piles of clothes and boxes of toys to get there, it seems to take the charm out of relaxing in bed. Your bedroom should be a tranquil haven, so maybe now’s the time to give it a thorough clean and sort out to ensure you can let your head hit the pillow and fall straight into sleep. Organisation is key. Sort out your drawers, baskets, wardrobes and anything else you may have, then get rid of things you don’t need – everything, even old make-up. Next, give your bedroom a deep clean. When was the last time you vacuumed under your bed and washed your curtains? A thorough clean will get rid of any unwanted dust and dirt in the air that may be disturbing you while you sleep. Don’t forget about your bed – give your mattress a vacuum, too! Now you need to make sure you have enough storage to ensure everything has a place in your bedroom. Plus, if your drawers have seen better days and keep collapsing, it may be time to replace
● Storage boxes come in handy to store everything Picture: Matalan from hairbrushes to letters and magazines them – you’re trying to create a stress-free haven, remember! If you don’t have a lot of space in your room then tall wardrobes are ideal. Everything is neatly enclosed, and you often get more shelving space to store items. You can also get either plastic or cardboard storage boxes to put within
your wardrobes, where you can put your shoes or out of season clothing to make more hanging space. Under-bed drawers are also great space savers, and you can now get both traditional divan-style beds and also contemporary versions with deep drawers which are perfect for storage. Think about bedside
tables, dressing tables and ottomans, too. These are all ideal for creating storage space and giving your items a ‘home’ within your bedroom – aim for clutterfree surfaces! If you do want some items on display, then select modern shelving to show them off, whether it’s books, ornaments or photographs; but remember to keep it simple and uncluttered. Bespoke built-in bedroom furniture could also be a good choice. This will ensure it fits your room perfectly while providing all the storage space you need. You don’t have to think of the old-style furniture, either – nowadays there are plenty of bedroom specialists that offer a wide choice of finishes, whether you’re after something sleek and stylish or traditional with character. If you choose built-in furniture you can often also decide on what shelving you want, how much hanging space and whether you have drawers within the wardrobe. Make your bedroom a clutter-free oasis and you’ll enjoy your room and sleep a lot more!

● Create a calming environment for your baby using soothing colours, soft toys and cushions
Picture: Mamas and Papas
Sweet dreams for baby
T
HERE’S nothing more exciting than bringing your bundle of joy home from hospital.
But what do you need to do in order to make your home ready for baby? One of the first considerations will be where baby will sleep. For the first few months, many parents choose to put their newborns into a Moses basket or crib which can be placed near their own bed, before moving them into a cot in their own room. A cot bed is always a good investment as it serves as a cot while your child is a baby but can be turned into a bed when they’re older.
Rob Chambers, commercial manager of wooden furniture at Mamas & Papas, advised: “You need to think about the activities that are going to take place in the nursery – sleeping, changing, playing, storing, etc.” You will probably need plenty of storage space, so it’s always a good idea to kit out the nursery with a wardrobe, storage chests, bookcases and dressers. Interior storage boxes and baskets are popular. Another useful item is a comfy chair or rocking chair for mums and dads to feed baby in. When it comes to decorating the nursery, there are a variety of options –
whether you want to create a calming environment with soothing colours or a more colourful and fun space and of course, your choice will be influenced by the sex of your child. Lots of stores offer complete nursery ranges from wallpaper and borders to matching accessories such as curtains, lightshades and rugs. You will also find lots of fun accessories to stimulate your child’s senses from cot mobiles and clocks to pictures and bookends to fun tie backs. Sonia Kelly, head of interiors, toys and gifts at Mamas & Papas, revealed: “Generally, if you don’t know the sex of your baby when
you come to decorate, choosing something quite neutral with hints of colour works well.” It is vital that baby is kept at the right temperature in the nursery, so when it comes to bedding, many parents are opting for baby sleeping bags. As there’s no blankets to kick off, it means baby won’t wake up feeling cold, so the whole family get a better night’s sleep. Another important factor affecting your baby’s sleep is lighting. Many parents find blackout blinds and liner curtains useful to keep out the light and ensure a dark and peaceful room. Sweet dreams all round!

Create your own garden of Eden W
HILE autumn is traditionally the time for putting the garden to bed for winter, it is also a really good time for looking at landscaping jobs when sections of the garden are bare. It is easier to see the garden layout and make changes for the coming spring. And also, it means flower beds aren’t damaged by foot traffic and wheelbarrows. It is worth bringing in the experts before embarking on any major landscaping project. It is a highly skilled job which in the wrong hands can go horribly wrong! While it is great to have your own ideas about how you want the garden to look, it is advisable to get a professional in to give you an idea of how realistic your plans actually are. If you have a small town garden you are not likely to be able to recreate the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, so keeping it real is vital. A landscape gardener will be able to walk around the garden with you giving you advice and pointers and taking on board your ideas. They will then go off and draw up plans for the garden and once you are happy with these plans, they can go ahead and turn your dream garden into a reality. Landscape gardening has come a long way in a short space of time and the possibilities are endless. The only limit is your own imagination! It isn’t just about giving your garden a new look for next year however. There are some essential repair and maintenance jobs which need to be done during the autumn months to ensure that your garden is
blooming lovely for spring. The lawn benefits from attention during late winter and into early spring before new growth starts. Re-seed areas where growth is sparse and treat the grass itself to encourage growth in spring. Remember not to carry out any work if the grass is actually frozen because footprints made on frozen grass can cause it to turn brown. The reason for this is that the cells within the leaves are full of ice rather than sap in cold weather. Keep dead-heading roses for continued flowers and start cutting back other shrubs. Prune evergreen hedges and cut out diseased, dead and damaged wood in shrubs. Finally, cover over the pond with netting to prevent leaf falls getting into the water.

Prepare your garden before winter bites
T
HERE’S still time, before autumn winds reach their height and the cold bite of winter comes, to make sure your garden is prepared for the worst of the weather.
It is imperative that you act now in order to prevent damage to your garden and to many of the plants you’ve grown over the year. First things first. Make sure that summer garden furniture is brought inside to store or is at least covered up to protect it from rain and frost. Keep on top of any dead leaves or other debris around the garden and continue this process over the autumn and winter to prevent a build-up which could cause slipping
hazards if the ground gets very wet or frozen. Cut back any plants that might be caught in high winds or that may damage property, and make sure any cracks in paths or the drive are filled to prevent rain and ice getting in and worsening the problem. The cold weather can really damage the plant life in your garden. Frost is a particular culprit causing plants to go black and droop. One of the problems is that as the sun rises, frost-frozen plants defrost too quickly and are damaged. Even hardy perennials and evergreens can be badly damaged by the cold weather. The best advice is to look at the plants that may be most at risk and try and make sure they are planted in sheltered spots,
such as under trees or against walls. Also, make sure to leave old growth of plants unpruned to better protect the main body of the plant from the worst of the frost. You can further protect plants by covering them over with fleece-covered frames or such like. Manure, straw and dead leaves can all be used to stop the soil around plants and bulbs from freezing. Very tender plants should be moved to pots and taken inside over the worst of the winter period. If you prepare now for the worst that the weather may throw at your garden this autumn and winter, then you can be more confident that your lawn and borders will burst back into beautiful bloom next spring.

Simple finishing touches THE simplest of creative touches in your home can help to set off a room, catch the eye to really show off a certain feature or just increase the sense of size or accentuate the feel of the room. It’s really a good excuse to get creative around your home, adding flourishes here and there and, if you feel confident enough, to get mucky yourself with paint brushes, stencils and the like. But, even if you don’t have the slightest ounce of artistic flair you can still indulge in adding the occasional objet d’art around the place to put your own individual stamp on a room. Whether you buy art prints, choose beautiful photographs, or adorn a mantelpiece with a clock or candelabra – such small touches can bring real life and joy to a room. So don’t be scared to try something, just a little bit different, inject some originality and individualism into the design of your home and, hopefully, wow the neighbours next time they come round for a coffee.

Get ready for winter weather
● Get your home ready for the winter weather and find safe storage for your garden furniture Picture: Tesco Direct (right) with a new shed
WITH the harsh weather on the way getting your home ready for winter can often be a big job, so now’s the time to start. From garden fences, slipped tiles, blocked gutters to squeaking gates and stopping draughts there’s plenty to keep you busy. Now’s the time to ensure your garden fences are painted to stop the rain damaging the wood, a fresh coat of paint or wood protector will keep them lasting longer and looking good through to spring. It’s also an ideal time to paint the outside of your house, back and front, if it hasn’t seen a splash of paint in a few years. It’ll give a fresh, clean look during winter instead of seeming tried and dull. Remember to check your guttering now as well, you don’t want to have to climb a ladder in the wind and rain to unblock moss from your guttering. If this is something you can’t do yourself there are plenty of handymen that are professionals and know exactly what they’re doing, but see if your friends can recommend someone to ensure they’re reputable. It’s also a good time to ensure all your roof tiles are firmly in place. Take a visit up to your loft and see if you can spot any gaps. You don’t want strong winds to
pull any off, or rains to seep through and start causing damage. It’s also time to start thinking about where to store garden furniture and barbecues to make sure they don’t rust and deteriorate, so if you don’t already have one why not get a shed to store everything safely away? If there are bigger jobs that may need undertaking it may be worth trying to get things sorted now before it gets worse. Damp is a big problem in many homes and if it’s not sorted quickly it can often spread and become much worse than you first thought, so call in the experts to see if they can tackle your damp. Get your home in order both inside and out and you’ll enjoy the benefits throughout winter.

Going green will make your home more energy efficient W
HETHER you’re looking to do your bit for the environment, reduce your household bills or make your home a more attractive preposition to potential buyers, there’s never been a better time to make your home more energy efficient. From home improvements which prevent your house from losing heat, to clever appliances that run on less power than older models and even gadgets to help you monitor your family’s energy or water usage, there are a wealth of ways for your household to go green. As well as giving you that warm and fuzzy feeling inside because you’re doing your bit for the environment, being green could also help make your home more attractive to potential buyers – especially since the introduction of Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) and Home Information Packs (HIPs), which give buyers energy efficiency information at a glance. According to the Energy Saving Trust, the average UK household could save as much as £340 and 1.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year by making their home more energy
● Colour coded, durable bags make recycling easier efficient – which is no small sum in these cash-strapped times. Having your old, somewhat temperamental boiler replaced with a new A-rated boiler with a full set of heating controls could save a whopping £235 a year in the average three-bedroom semidetached house. Alternatively, if you’d prefer to get your energy from a renewable source, why not install a ground source heat pump, a solar water heating system to work alongside your conventional water heater, or a biomass boiler? A carbon neutral fuel, biomass is made up of plants and untreated

wood, which can be burned in a special boiler to power central heating. You can also boost your property’s green credentials by fitting energy efficient light bulbs and using energy efficient appliances, which will help save money on fuel bills. From wide screen TVs to dishwashers, vacuum cleaners, washing machines, irons and fridges, these days there’s an impressive selection of energy efficient appliances on the market to help you cut energy costs and reduce your carbon dioxide emissions. Other improvements include
installing double glazing to all windows and doors to prevent heat loss and ensuring your property is properly insulated. According to the Energy Saving Trust, about a third of all heat lost in un-insulated homes is through the walls, so if you want to appeal to potential purchasers or cut down heating costs, it’s worth making sure your property has cavity wall insulation. Insulating pipes and water tanks, draught proofing and topping loft insulation up to at least 270mm can also help to improve household running costs, boost your home’s green credentials and ultimately, make it more attractive to potential buyers. As well as home improvements and using energy efficient appliances and heating systems, there are countless other ways you can boost your home’s green credentials, including recycling household waste; composting garden waste; using shower timers to ensure you don’t use too much water; cleaning with products made without harsh chemicals and choosing furniture or decorative accessories made from recycled materials.

Make a splash with bathroom chic I
● Create a bathroom with plenty of charm

T may be the smallest room of the house, but your bathroom is most likely one of the most used.
And as well as being a great place to chill out and indulge in a spot of pampering, a stylish bathroom can add real value to your home so it’s worth spending time creating a desirable and functional washing space. First things first – arm yourself with an array of interior magazines to look at the latest styles and trends. Consider who will need to use the bathroom – is it for a young family or will older or less able bodied members of family be using it? You also need to consider any legal and planning requirements. Contact your local authority for details of ventilation and layout planning requirements. Think about your basic floor arrangements and where you want to position your toilet, sink and bath so you have enough room. A well designed bathroom features space and good storage. Wet rooms are really popular right now, but not all house have the space for a walk-in style, open plan shower room. Recent trends have seen baths placed in the centre of the bathroom, which looks stylish if you have enough space. Alternatively, you could opt for a dramatic claw-foot roll top path, or deep wooden or steel tubs. Or for the ultimate in indulgence, opt for a Whirlpool tub. Taps are the focal point of the bath and simple, square shapes are popular.

Keep floor and wallcoverings simple. That means plain tiles, polished concrete, dark wood, or stained or painted floorboards. For drama, use a dark stain or paint. Paint your walls in a colour that really sets off your bath. A bold black wall works well if the floor has been painted to match. Choose wipeable paints. Wallpaper behind a glass panel, coloured glass or tiles looks great too. Large tiles make a bathroom seem more spacious – opt for slateeffect tiles for a really modern look.
