Mix the rough with

PaulBakertakesa breakfrom colour-richtrendsby goingbacktobasics andembracingthe Puritanlook

P

URITAN Folk is an interior design trend which is slowly creeping up on homeowners and is proving chin-strokingly popular. It quite literally mixes the rough with the smooth. Not quite as rigid as the religious movement from which it takes its name, still, the idea is to be inspired by the sophistication and form of the functional. Its stylish look comprises striking crafted furniture – wooden tables and chairs, for example – combined with soft furnishings that display attractive designs, often inspired by ethnic patterning. These soft furnishings are informed by the indigenous designs of South America or North Africa, so look for a Moroccan or Aztec flavour for your accessories. Your cushions, curtains and throws should be bright and quite colourful, while the neutral, almost rustic look of the wood or tiled floors or crafted furniture items – tables, dressers, sideboards, as well as beds and chairs – will counter any extravagance. It’s all about having the right eye to make the contrasts work. GO RUSTIC A good idea might be to also look at the rustic and farmhouse trends. These remain key trends and items suited to this style can be successfully mixed in with the Puritan. That said, there is a certain sophistication to the Puritan look, with its tendency towards using raw materials hand-crafted to produce beautiful products. Much that defines the trend is not massproduced, and has a certain elegance and quality about it. Natural wood is a key part of this trend, and you can make the look work in pretty much any room in the house, from a child’s bedroom to an attractive dining room. Living rooms can be decorated with timelessly elegant sofas and armchairs. Bespoke pieces

This dark wood Oriental Opium Bed is right for a Puritan theme from Natural Bed Company work best with this look, though the cost may be prohibitive. Still, the more individual the better. Ethnic rugs and patterned throws complete the look. In the kitchen, Puritan dictates that function take precedence over futuristic gadgetry. Thankfully, there is no shortage of attractive wooden and stone implements to decorate the room. You could even try cooking with them if you feel really confident! Bedrooms can prove an inspiring canvas when you decorate them with patchwork quilts and ethnic beads and blankets. When it comes to the bed itself, the four-poster is a good option, in a metal or wood frame, combined with neutral curtains. Whichever room it is, interesting designs can give you somewhere to

interestingly modern. The cool metallic 20th-century light fittings and lamps follow the function and craft idea of the Puritan trend, but

provide another interesting contrast to the ethnic patterns and natural materials. Then, colourwise, furniture and walls should again provide contrasts. The neutral tones of the floor and wood furniture should be mixed with richer, more traditional colours adorning walls and sofas. That’s not to say these rich colours should be bright and summery like the big colour trends –

mplement the trend the colours favoured by the Puritan look are more classic and subdued. One thing to remember if you are going to be true to this eclectic style is not to go overboard on accessories. The Puritan look is one of perfect form and function, so it is meant to be a real celebration of the essential furniture a house needs. Still, this is a style trend, not a way of life, and a certain amount of accessories is necessary to retain the pleasant and attractive feel that makes your house your home. Take the best of the Puritan trend, as much as you like and feel will work with your home. It is, after all, a trend of contrasts, and the

contrast between the past and the modern is perhaps the most important one to get right.
