Answer:
They’re goals you’ve watched over and over again, either on video, DVD or YouTube – but how well do you remember them with only the commentator’s words for company? We’ve given you the words, with the goalscorer’s name blanked out, you have to supply the marksman. Some of the commentaries are iconic, while some fail to do the goals they describe justice – but all of the goals are significant strikes in Liverpool’s history. So lights, camera, action . . . !

HAD not ********* missed a penalty, Ian Rush twice hit a post and several players missed from less than 10 yards, the final score would have soared past the club record haul of 11 by which they thrashed the Norwegians of Stromsgodset in the Cup Winners Cup of 1974. The undoubted star of the night was ********* who atoned for his penalty miss by grabbing four excellent goals, three of them in the space of 10 minutes midway through the second half. That was surely a record for a Liverpool midfielder, to set alongside Fulham’s record defeat in any event, Liverpool’s highest score in a domestic fixture and the highest recorded in the League/Milk/Littlewoods Cup competition.
2
A MAGNIFICENT hat-trick by ********* highlighted a class Liverpool performance against outplayed Bolton Wanderers at Anfield this afternoon. Liverpool had been so dominant, moving the ball around with accurate first-time passes that bewildered Bolton at times, that a goal was always on. It came after 14 minutes with a first of the season for *********. It came at the end of an intricate passing build up with ********* hitting the ball with all his power from 20 yards. The ball deflected slightly off Burke and gave McDonough no chance as it sailed into the top of the net. Again it was a powerful shot from ********* as he drove the ball low and the pace off the turf deceived McDonough as the ball skidded under his body into the net. ********* had been so powerful and positive in everything he had done that he deserved his hat-trick goal after 55 minutes. This was a close range effort and the major credit went to Souness, who brought the ball through after Bolton defenders had made mistake after mistake in the face of intense pressure. This was *********’s first League hat-trick but he has had one in Europe.
3
WITH a 3-0 advantage surely nothing can stop Liverpool coasting through to the semi-finals of this trophy against the Germans in the second leg in a fortnight’s time. Liverpool’s ultimate weapon was *********, that blond bombshell who, when he was signed three years ago from Wolves, was soccer’s costliest teenager. Last night he more than justified the potential that was seen in him and the faith put in him by manager Bill Shankly. For almost single-handedly he destroyed Bayern with all three Liverpool goals – and that on his first senior outing for four months after a cartilage operation. Ironically it was in the second leg of Liverpool’s tie with Dinamo in Bucharest that ********* was hurt. He certainly took revenge on Europe last night.”

CHANCE This section’s really thr-eesy! All you have to do is identify the hat-trick heroes, from the Liverpool Echo reports as they appeared at the time. There are plenty of clues in the reports, but the goalscorer’s name has been asterisked out...
SUBSTITUTE Ian Rush fired the goal which set an FA Cup record today as Liverpool – helped by *********’s hat-trick – eased their way into the fourth round. The Reds had required Fowler’s 21st minute goal to settle their early nerves against a Rochdale side showing no signs of being intimidated by the surroundings. *********’s subsequent double brought Liverpool a comfortable interval lead, and afterwards it was all plain sailing with Valentine putting through his own net, Rush setting that new Cup record and ********* completing a hat-trick after being set up by Fowler.”
7
LIVERPUDLIANS like nothing better than to humble Manchester United, and thanks to *********’s hat-trick that’s exactly what they did. “********* opener, a tap-in after Les Sealey had prevented Denis Irwin from putting through his own net, followed a sweeping counter attack involving John Barnes and Steve McMahon. “The little Geordie increased the lead in the 31st minute, slotting the ball cooly past Sealey after McMahon’s crossfield pass had created the opening . . . . *********, looking offside, collected Houghton’s pass to make the furious Sealey pick the ball out of his net for the fourth frustrating time.”
8
NOT bad for a left winger that Mr *********, is he? Fate decreed that this wasn’t to be the day Michael Owen provided a damning verdict of Howard Wilkinson’s tactical cunning. Instead ********* gave Liverpool their wake up call to the new season in emphatic style, proving in the process that on his day he is a destructive force. ********* was awesome yesterday. Liverpool were awesome yesterday. And although Derby County were awful, how encouraging it was to finally see Liverpool produce a magnificent 90-minute performance. This was the game we’ve been waiting for by the Reds. The perfect response to Stamford Bridge. A welcome silencer to the ‘told you so’ merchants who were rather too gleefully trying to write off Gerard Houllier

A FOUR goal blast from ********* earned him another place in Liverpool’s record books last night – and booked his team a safe passage into the second round of the European Cup Winners’ Cup. The Welsh marksman, who became his country’s joint top scorer a week ago, took his Reds’ continental tally to 19, beating the previous best set by Roger Hunt. Paul Stewart’s double had given Graeme Souness’ men a healthy lead before ********* ended more than 500 minutes of personal frustration without a goal in a Liverpool shirt since the Charity Shield.”
5
MORRISSEY took up Leishman’s through pass and shot fiercely and accurately that *********, standing right in front of goal, only had to sidefoot the ball solidly into the
net. . . . A’Court, striding on to the ball to make a big shot, found the ball deflected wide of the target but Liverpool were full of life and ********* made it 3-0 with a header from a Morrissey centre at 34 minutes. ********* crowned the day with the best goal of them all, an angled header from a ball coming through like a bullet from a shot by Leishman. Georgen made an unavailing but brave attempt to save and

LIVERPOOL are breathing down Manchester United’s necks in the Barclays Premier League title race after a ********* hat-trick helped to destroy fifth-placed Aston Villa. It was the third stunning victory in 12 days for the Reds, having previously put four past Real Madrid and Manchester United. ********* scored three goals with a free-kick and two penalties, with the latter one following the dismissal of goalkeeper Brad Friedel for bringing down Reds striker Fernando Torres. In the first-half Dirk Kuyt and Albert Riera had scored, before ********* took over with his set-piece onslaught.”

NICKNAME ANSWERS 1. Brian Hall. Steve Heighway and Brian Hall were that footballing rarity – graduates. Bamber Gascoigne was host of the popular TV quiz show University Challenge, and Heighway was taller than Hall. Hey presto! Big Bamber and Little Bamber. 2. Kevin Keegan. Because of an alleged resemblance to a TV cartoon super hero of the day. 3. Tommy Lawrence. He claims he has no idea, but Tommy was never what you’d consider slim, and used to fling himself around penalty areas. 4. Ronnie Whelan. Apparently his Irish accent meant the word ‘Just’ always came out as ‘Dust’ – hence an instant nickname. 5. David Burrows. The obvious abbreviation for anybody called Burrows while Bugs Bunny was popular. 6. Robbie Fowler. His team-mates thought he was that good he could do anything. 7. John Scales. Suave, urbane and sophisticated, but certainly not licensed to thrill!
GAMEOFTWOHALVES Can you spot the six differences in this famous picture? Answers at the bottom...
8. Jason McAteer. After the loveable but none-too-clever character from Only Fools and Horses, Jason McAteer made a career out of saying stupid things. Famously he once asked for a pizza to be cut into four slices, not eight, because he wasn't that hungry. 9. John Barnes. After the Dallas character of the time, Digger Barnes. He also briefly laboured under the nickname ‘Tarmac’ – because ‘he was the black Heighway.’ 10. Tommy Smith. He came from Anfield and was made from tempered steel! 11. Steve McManaman. An alleged resemblance to the Scooby Doo character. (Not Stan Laurel?)

Answers: Harry Kewell’s medal is silver; Steven Gerrard’s wristband is yellow; Steven Gerrard’s armband has the ‘C’ on it; John Arne Riise’s tattoo has disappeared, Didi Hamann’s number on shorts has disappeared; Antonio Nunez has appeared (next to Jerzy Dudek)
12. Glen Johnson. Not from his likeness to popular rapper Snoop Dogg, but rather Felicia “Snoop” Pearson, the indecipherable gangster from The Wire.
