WELCOME TO LIVERPOOL ONE

What a year! The spotlight has really been on Liverpool this year and rightly so. This year we stood up together as a city and demanded to be recognised as the cosmopolitan, forward thinking, innovative and culturally dynamic city that we are and we should be rightly proud of our achievement. Capital of Culture 2008 has been a wonderful thing to witness and I would like to take this opportunity to offer my congratulations to everyone for delivering an impressive calendar of culture. Grosvenor, as many will know, invested a huge amount of time, effort and money into moving the whole Liverpool ONE programme forward six months to coincide with the Capital of Culture year; and let’s face it, it’s been a year to remember. Perhaps the thing that I believe will leave the most lasting impression is not so much what has taken place in our city and streets this year, but the feeling we have about it. Standing on the new Leisure Terrace on the first of October I overheard a couple of friends talking, one sat back on his seat looking out over the Terrace, across the park, past the Hilton and One Park West and down to the old Docks, and proudly said to his friend “Where else can you get
a view like that. People talk about London but they don’t have anything on that.” That, for me, is one of my highlights this year. Liverpool ONE has been about delivering what you want. We passionately believe that people like streets and individual shops. They like to be in the open air. We also think that what we have created enables Liverpool city centre to retain its character and history. Something we must all savour. And that’s what it’s all about. Moving here last year from Belfast what greeted me most is the sense of pride in Liverpool. I am proud of our contribution in this momentous year and hope that you all share our pride in Liverpool ONE. This is our legacy year; the year Liverpool became a new city filled with the same core energy, and passion that it has always felt. I don’t know about you but I believe the buzz in the city this year will propel us into a very exciting 2009. Happy Christmas and here’s to another fantastic year in 2009.
Joanne Jennings, Cheif Executive, Liverpool ONE

“I love the way Liverpool ONE links everything together,” says broadcast journalist student and DJ, Paul. “One minute you're shopping, the next you’re in a wide open park with great views,” he says. A busy DJ at the weekends, Paul enjoys Liverpool ONE’s two huge new music stores.
John should know the city’s streets better than most for, together with his sister, he runs the popular Shiverpool Ghost Tours. He’s fascinated with the city’s history, and loves the way Liverpool ONE joins old and new and gives him an easy route from the centre of town to his Shiverpool offices at the Albert Dock.
Norwegian born Ragz is originally from Stavanger - the ‘other’ Capital of Culture this year. A busy singersongwriter with a refreshingly original style, Ragz loves Liverpool ONE’s mix of established brands and stores new to Liverpool. She also loves Liverpool ONE’s mix of great value and high end fashion.
Fashion designer Jeni loves the quirky mix of stores, and the view across to the docks from the Leisure Terrace. Mostly, though, Jeni loves the huge range of cosmetics and the knowledgable staff at Debenhams - particularly the girls at Backstage and Debbie at Benefit!

Although no record of Liverpool Castle's construction exists, it is believed to have been built around 1235 by William de Ferrers, the 4th earl of derby. Built to survey (it was situated on the city's then highest point) and protect King John's latest port, the castle survived for 500 years - rising from what’s now Derby Square. Still, in this city, we don’t like to see anything go to waste. So, in true Liverpool style, its demolition made it possible for the city, as we know it today, to really take shape...

BACK TO LIFE There’s never been a better time to enjoy Liverpool. The city’s tenure as European Capital of Culture has seen record visitors, drawn to a yearlong celebration of art, culture and entertainment. And, by reshaping the city for the world to see, Liverpool ONE’s played a major part in the city’s rebirth. With its mix of stylish stores (many arriving in Liverpool for the first time) exciting dining and a state-of-the-art new cinema, the city was able to put on a welcome like never before. And, fortunately, for locals and visitors alike, this was one event that wasn’t going to come to end in 2009. For Liverpool ONE, this is just the start. And, as Retail Liaison Manager, Cindy Downing (above) reveals, it couldn’t have come at a better time. “Before Liverpool ONE, over 50% of all Liverpool’s retail was concentrated on the short pedestrianised stretch of Church Street,” she says. “In the seventies, Liverpool was Britain’s third shopping city, behind London’s West End and Glasgow. We were a city that loved to shop.” We still are. But, incredibly, before the first square of soil was lifted from the ground a scant four years ago, Liverpool had slumped to a lowly 17th place. “We were quite simply contracting in on ourselves,” Downing says. Spurred into action, Liverpool City Council identified an area of land around Chavasse Park which, with Grosvenor’s help, was to be transformed in Europe’s largest-ever city centre redevelopment project. “From the start, Grosvenor was determined to create an environment that connected with the city,” Downing explains. “This was not going to be a souless, out of town shopping mall. This was about putting Liverpool back on the world stage again - as a major city where people can live, work and relax in style.” It’s been a huge success. Liverpool is now back in the top five shopping destinations in the UK. Mind you, in this city, we’re used to being at the top of the charts…
Work begins on developing an existing 'pool' or inlet (the ‘lever pool’) into a commercial dock. Using stone thought to be from Liverpool's now-disused castle the dock walls are formed and the world's first commercial wet dock officially opens in 1715.
From the 1800’s new docks were being built on reclaimed land along the riverfront, and the site of Steer’s first dock was infilled. In recent times, it was most famously occupied by the grand Moat House Hotel (named after the castle’s moat). In May 2005, this too was wiped from the map to make way for Liverpool ONE. But, for the first time in over 200 years, the city’s birthplace - the old dock - can be viewed through a special observation glass in Customs House place, just outside John Lewis.

ODEON The brand-new Odeon cinema at Liverpool ONE is one of the most exciting examples of state-of-the-art technology in the UK, with everything geared round giving the guests the best possible experience. Gareth Radcliffe is in charge of ‘all the stuff that goes on in the background to make sure things run smoothly.’ “It is a new cinematic experience for the people of Liverpool,” he declares. “We have some of the biggest screens I’ve ever seen and with juice bars, gallery bars, the Ben & Jerry bar and digital projectors in the foyer it’s spectacular. And it’s huge; when a guest comes in it’s awesome in its size and dimensions. It blows you away!” As all good cinemas should, really. But with all the technical demands in running the cinema, does he get a chance to enjoy the films? “We do, thankfully,” he laughs, “I get the choice of which ones I can watch for technical reasons and I really enjoyed watching James Bond here.” We bet. On the ODEON’s huge new screens, those budget-busting special effects truly come into their own. “It’s great to help people to really enjoy themselves,” says the 29-year-old local lad, “And getting that buzz you can only get from a brilliant film. is absolutely fantastic.”

WELCOME TO URBAN OUTFITTERS Cat Stevenson is the Store Manager at Urban Outfitters. Originally from Lanakshire in Scotland, she began working part-time with the company when studying for a degree in Psychology before training in Manchester and a stint as Department Manager in the Glasgow store and ultimately landing in Liverpool ONE. “To work in a shop you need to be able to read people and work with staff and customers,” says the 25-year old, “So I think my degree helped me in that sense!” She says that Urban Outfitters are unique in focus. “It’s got a bit of an edge compared to other high street stores who might focus on one kind of customer but here we have something for everyone – from young to much older everyone can find something here to suit their tastes.” Stevenson says Liverpool ONE has a lot of personality, and having spent three years down the road she is uniquely placed to comment on the merits of the respective towns. “Liverpool’s developing fast and it doesn’t feel as ‘industrial’ as Manchester. The architecture here reminds me very much of Glasgow. The surroundings in Liverpool ONE are lovely.” “Every day is completely different,” she concludes of her job, “but it’s great – even if it’s a bit cold here by the sea!”

“
LAS IGUANAS It’s South American style down at Las Iguanas and general manager Pete Lyons, originally of Tuebrook, is keen on bringing the spirit of Brazil to Liverpool ONE. Literally. “We have more than 65 cocktails on the menu and the staff know them all,” explains Lyons, “And all the bartenders know what they taste like. We’ve also got our own sugar cane plantation in Rio where we bottle our very own Magnifico Cachaça (a kind of rum). Our Caipirinha are the best I’ve ever tasted.” “We do a food taste in the morning too – very hot first thing with all this Latin American spicy food, but it’s all good.” Even more so given that the restaurant uses what Pete calls ‘proper chefs, not microwave technicians,’ and every single dish is run past the head chef before being sent out; a typical attention to detail for this heavily customer-oriented venue. “It’s a British institution sometimes to see guests as an inconvenience,” laughs the 31-year-old, “But we’re very focused on giving each customer a unique and excellent experience.” With Ipanema Coffee, chilli sauces and that excellent rum also on sale through the restaurant, that unique experience can come home too. Que delicioso!
” OUR PLACE “
Looks great. But what’s it like to work there? We met four people who spend more time in Liverpool ONE than anyone...
LIVERPOOL ONE
Joanne Hands is a Liverpool ONE Representative, ensuring things run smoothly for the development’s retailers. “I’ve always wanted to work in retail, but I enjoy working with the public too. So my job combines retail know-how with customer service, which is the best of both worlds. My area centres around the east of Liverpool ONE, around Paradise Street and Peter’s Lane. I liaise with the stores to make sure that they have all the support they need, and, when many of them are opening in the city for the first time, it’s important they’ve got someone they can talk to, to explain just how this city ticks! But it’s a two-way relationship – I help them, and they help me by making sure they get sales figures in on time! “Coming up with advice and solutions is a big part of what I do. If a store wants to stage a promotional event, I help make it happen with our marketing department. I’ve just been getting stores to take part in our Christmas light switch on, and am working on helping them plan their events and activities for the New Year. “Local knowledge is so important in this job. I’m from Burscough, and Liverpool ONE has finally ended that ages old dilemma – where should we go on a shopping trip? Now there’s just no competition!”

JUST
THING
What’s your Liverpool ONE? We spent a bright winter’s afternoon chatting to visitors to find out. Apart from the person who thought it looked like ‘a giant spaceship’ (you know who you are), most of you loved the open spaces, stunning views and exciting array of shops new to the city. For the Zutons’ Abi Harding, though, the response was much more straightforward: ‘It’s boss!’ she told us...

WHAT: I like all the shops, it makes the whole city look bigger. And some of the new stores are excellent. Urban Outfitters is amazing.
WHAT: My favourite thing about Liverpool ONE is the milkshake place, Shakeabout, in the Galleria by the ODEON.
WHAT: It has to be being able to grab a decent meal before a film, instead of having to make do with junk food.
WHAT: One of my favourite things to do is sit in John Lewis with a cup of coffee looking out at the sea.

ABI HARDING So, what’s the verdict from the Zutons’ leading lady? “Iʼve been touring so much this year that this is the first time Iʼve been able to really have a look around,” Abi tells us. “Iʼm definitely a fan. Itʼs the best thing thatʼs happened here for ages,” she says. Effortlessly cool, Abi prefers to play her sax barefoot but, when sheʼs off stage, sheʼs known for her unique style which mixes indie chic with a touch of glamour, and a healthy dose of attitude. Need proof that Liverpoolʼs women are far more than wives and girlfriends? You donʼt really need to look any further. “To me, the park and the views from the restaurants over to the Albert Dock and the Mersey are the best anywhere. Makes me glad to be home!” she laughs. So, for Abi, itʼs a good to know that, sometimes she can go out, by herself, and look across the water… 09

Liverpool ONE is on a mission to make our men a more stylish proposition. Male shoppers using the personal shopping service at Debenhams are promised impartial style advice whether it’s a new shirt or a whole new wardrobe they’re after. Appointments take about an hour, and after an initial consultation you’ll be left to peruse a magazine whilst enjoying a free beer. Which is nice. “We talk to the clients and listen to what they’re after,” says Personal Shopper Stefanie Owens, as she dresses the One Team’s John Stone (above). “It’s free, and there is no hard sell or obligation. I’m not on commission!” Gap also offers a personal shopping service. Matthew Arnold explained how the consultations work: “We'll speak to customers about what they're after and suggest styles, and discuss new trends and looks. We will show customers key pieces and presentation books to help them get the look they want to achieve.” “Men seem more open to suggestions about clothes,” says Owens. Attwood agrees: “Men are generally less self conscious and have less issues than women, and they’re happy to take advice. Especially if someone else does their shopping for them.” South John Street’s Suits You offers formal tailoring advice, while, over in New Look, the One Team’s Paul Maguire (below) gets the personal treatment: “It’s great. It’s made me try things I’d never be brave enough before, and I’m impressed.”

GET THE LOOK A masculine palette of charcoal grey, black, cream and checks is accented with flashes of red highlights this season. Black and red checks bring the look bang up to date for Autumn Winter 2008, while seasonal sparkle is added with luminous accessories, encrusted with diamante and glitter. Menswear looks smart, stylish and sophisticated this season. Straight legged jeans and slim fit trousers are paired with skinny ties and slim fit shirts for a narrow elongated silhouette. Bomber jackets complete the look, in checks, neutral
tones and washed leathers. Wear with a hooded top underneath for some casual cool. Neckwear is key this winter, so invest in an understated grey toned scarf, or a stylish burgundy neckerchief. Never tried it before? Go on, be brave! Knits are everywhere this season, and come in soft, fine gauge versions, like the J by Jasper Conran merino wool V neck at Debenhams, or chucky, rustic knits like those at Ted Baker (Peter’s Lane) and Zara (South John Street).

FESTIVE
FAYRE
Can’t stand the heat? Get out of the kitchen. Enjoy a festive feast from around the world this Christmas, without having to pack your bags. Liverpool ONE brings the best of the world to you ITALY: Zizzi
LATIN AMERICA: Las Iguanas
An Italian Christmas, as you might expect, is a very traditional affair. Usually running from Christmas Eve through until Epiphany (January 6, but you knew that), food plays a big part in the festive period. Surprisingly enough, a meatless dish is often served as the big meal for Christmas Eve – maybe a refreshing Salmone e Peperonata. Liverpool ONE's Zizzi have a fantastic take on this: pan roasted fresh salmon, served with potato purée, peperonata, lemon and rocket. Turkey and chicken are traditional in Italy too – but, as ever, it’s with a twist or example. Zizzi offer a delicious Casareccia Pollo Piccante (chilli marinated chicken, santos tomatoes, spinach and tomato in a piquant cream sauce). Buon Natale!
When it comes to Christmas in Latin America, tradition is the word. It's native turkeys all the way – but there are variations on how to cook the bird. For example, in Brazil, the turkey will be marinated in rum, with lots of spices and served with coloured rice and vegetables. Nice. Join the carnival then, at Las Iguanas. With a seasonal twist, you’ll find a mouth-watering selection of regional dishes on their festive menus - from spicy chicken and cranberry gourmet fajitas to Bahian risotto with palm heart, artichoke and asparagus. Throw in the South American wines and beers and we'll see you there…
MEXICO: Barburrito “Dale, dale, dale, no pierdas el tino, porque si lo pierdes, pierdes el camino, Una, dos, tres!” Translation? Basically, on the count of three, whack that piñata. Christmas is all about fun and games in Mexico. Well, when it's not about religion and food, that is. Traditional Christmas dishes south of the American border include tamales, sweet fritters and churros – all washed down with hot chocolate. Barburrito can help you there: their menu is an A-Z of Mexican dishes, including our favourite, the tacos. 12

PORTUGAL: Nandos Picture the scene: a traditional Christmas Eve, presents under the tree and the smell of salted dry cod cooking in the kitchen. Really? Really - cod on Christmas Eve is as normal in Portugal, as leaving Father Christmas milk and cookies over here. Another national favourite is delicious flame-grilled Peri-Peri chicken - and, of course, Nando’s knows a thing or two about this warming, spicy chicken dish.
A TIME TO
REJOICE
JAPAN: Yo! Sushi Japanese Christmas food? It might sound odd, but this largely non-Christian country enjoys the holiday season as much as anyone. Typically, they’ll settle down to a fried chicken meal, but, most importantly, it’s the puddings which are the stars over the holiday period. And Yo! Sushi doesn’t disappoint. Yes, it’s known for its fresh-as-you-like sushi, but, trust us, you should taste their sweet and sticky puddings. Beats a dried out mince pie any day.
NEW ZEALAND: Gourmet Burger Kitchen Christmas arrives slap bang in the middle of summer for New Zealanders and Aussies, so the festive period gets taken outdoors. We all know what that means: barbecue! NZ chef Peter Gordon is the man behind GBK. He recommends venison. Don’t tell Rudolph. .
SOUTHEAST ASIA: Yee Rah
Lots of options here. Whether you head for the fiery heart of Thailand, or the noodles and seafood of Indonesia, this is Christmas with added colour. Believe it or not, Christmas in Bangkok is jingle all the way - and Yee Rah, with its fusion of the best South East Asian dishes, served up fresh and fast, is a seasonal hot-spot you shouldn't miss.
Christmas in Liverpool ONE promises to be a really traditional affair. Santa’s in his grotto (until Christmas Eve), glittering lights adorn the silver birches, and if they could arrange for the snow to lay deep and crisp and even, we think they would! Still, with market stalls, carol concerts, late night shopping and seasonal surprises around every corner, make no mistake, this is Christmas central. Paradise Street, New Manestys Lane, College Lane and Thomas Steers Way are festooned with fantastic new lighting designs adding a glow wherever you go. And have you seen the giant paper chains on South John Street yet? Don't know about you, but we're keeping an eye out for the giant children who made them… Santa’s Grotto on Chavasse Park offers children a journey into a magical wonderland where they can meet Santa and share their Christmas wish. And, just to prove how hi-tech Santa’s got these days, you can even book your visit to his city centre pad online! Just visit www.bookfatherchristmas.co.uk, to get your one-to-one in Liverpool ONE. Music and entertainment continues throughout the festive season up until Christmas Eve – so, whenever you arrive, there’s bound to be a touch of festive magic in the air. And, should you need any further persuading, there’s been a host of stylish new openings, just in time for those oh-so-important Christmas gifts. – From the skin-saving treats of Liz Earle’s Naturally Active range at John Lewis to the seductive lingerie designs expertly fitted at Leia (Peter’s Lane), there’s plenty of treats to keep a girl happy. Need more? Lolipops offer instant happiness to anyone lucky enough to receive one of their gorgeous handbags (Key’s Court), while L’Occitane (Key’s Court) offer a warm embrace straight from Provence, in their luxurious range of soaps and scents from the South of France. Oh, and don’t forget, Sale season starts Boxing Day. Just don’t let anyone know we told you….
FRANCE: Cafe Rouge French Cuisine is by the best in the World. Well, at least that's a good starting point for a foodie argument! It might also go some way to explaining why Café Rouge's celebration of all things ‘sur le continent’ is so successful. Cafe culture doesn't get any better than a cosy Parisian Bistro, and this French chain restaurant offers great Gallic breakfasts and evening meals that wouldn't be out of place on the Boulevard Saint Michel. The seasonal menu for Café Rouge includes roast turkey laden with caramelised onions, chestnut and sage stuffing with bacon (ooh!). And don’t forget the excellent vin de maison. Salut! 13

Sara Li-Chou Han talks us through the must-haves of the season. This Christmas party season, fashion takes on a rock n’ roll edge, with punky tartan influences, lots of leather and sparkly rock chick sequins. The season’s hottest colours? Black, red and purple in sumptuous satins, gothic lace and sheer chiffon layers. With the credit crunch looming large, buying well has never been so important. Gone are the carefree impulse buys of yesterday, replaced with investment buying and savvy accessorising. A good coat, a beautiful blouse, some killer leather trousers and a fabulous red dress can be all the seasonal updates you need. With the right accessories your new clothes can go the distance from winter club nights and Christmas parties to New Year shenanigans and beyond. Cute clutch bags and sparkly brooches are instant outfit boosts, and a change from funky cowboy boots to killer heels can take your outfit from day to night in a matter of seconds. Key trends for accessories are insect influenced jewellery, as seen at New Look (Paradise Street), snakeskin shoes and bags, such as Dune, opening late November (Peter’s Lane) gorgeous red clutch and cute-as-abutton mini top hats, the perfect way to glam up on New Years Eve, available from H&M (Paraise Street) and also Acccessorize (South John Street). Jewellery with a Victorian Gothic slant also features highly this season, and Topshop’s delicate cameo earrings are to die for! Drum up some attention this season with Liverpool ONE!

DAY
A
LIFE
IN THE
If there’s a better way to spend the day than combining a leisurely shopping trip with your best friend, taking in a make-over and spending the evening with James Bond, we’ve yet to find it… We sent The One Team’s Ragz and Jeni out on the town. Can they cope with all the attention? What do you think?
10.00am On your marks Arrive. Park up in Q Park.Take a deep breath... “Wow, this is an amazing car park. It’s like something from the future!” says Ragz. We get the feeling they’re a little over-excited. But, with Q Park’s complimentary brollies to keep the hair perfect whatever the weather, what’s not to like?
11.00am For those about to shop... Well, with so many new shops, it would be rude not to. Jeni is running dangerously low on handbags. The situation simply cannot be allowed to continue. Ragz leaves her to it. She knows better than to interfere when there are bags to be hunted down... “This new route to the Albert Dock has made the link between the city centre and the River Mersey much stronger,” Ragz says. “I love the Mersey, it represents the strength and wildness of Liverpool and I love that Liverpool ONE leads me to it!” she says. But then, she is Norwegian. They’re a poetic lot.
1.00pm A quick pit-stop Grabbing a snack at Barburrito, Ragz tells us she’s read somewhere that burritos are the new baguettes. She can’t remember where. No matter. This is fast food for women on a mission. Tasty, healthy, and a little bit messy. So, instead, they opt for one of the fresh Burrrito Bowls. “We’ve had our nails done,” they tell us. There’s a logic there somewhere… 16

2.00pm A safe pair of hands...
4.00pm In need of an energy boost Quick change. Quick coffee. Looking fabulous. Liverpool One’s personal shoppers have helped transform day to evening with glitzy accessories and a stylish new, good-to-go look. “Beats having to call a taxi home to get changed,” says Ragz.
Time for a spot of relaxation. All that shopping can wear a girl out. Ragz surrenders herself to the soothing hands of Elemis Spa’s Nicki Smith, over at John Lewis. She chooses a Power Booster Facial, to plump up the skin with radiance enhancing antioxidants. “This facial offers maximum results in minimum time,” says Nicky.” Meanwhile, at Debenham’s new < id Backstage department, Jeni gets a magical makeover in thirty fast minutes. “I really wanted a modern take on a 60s look, with dramatic eyes, neutral lips and 60's inspired beehive style hair,” she says. She got it. Manager, Simon Currier explains: “We’re the first one stop destination in a retail environment offering the ultimate look in hair and make-up tailored to the client. It’s not just like going in to a regular store, we offer a menu of different hair and make-up looks and our customers shimmy out with fabulous hair and expertly applied make-up.” “It's the breath of fresh air Liverpool needed,” he enthuses. And our customers are fabulous,” Well, they are now...
ONE FOR THE BOYS Liverpool ONE’s a great place for the boys, too - as our One Team lads, Paul (above) and John prove. “I enjoy shopping when the atmosphere is good, usually in spacious, relaxed, and friendly surroundings but I never intentionally set out on a shopping spree,” Paul says. “Having said that, I’ve been here most of the day!” Time, then, for a Wagamama break. All those fabulous healhty noodles give a great energy burst...
5.00pm Finishing touches Final preparations. After her facial, Ragz decides on a quick fix. “Our range is no-fuss, maximum results,” says Debbie at Debenham’s Benefit beauty bar, as she applies some curiously named ‘Bad Gal’ intensifying mascara. Downtown Tokyo? No... John Stone (below) rounds off a hard day spent watching a personal shopper run around after his every whim by refuelling at Yo! Sushi. “All that energy I’ve saved has made it almost possible for me to use chopsticks,” he says. “Result!”
6.00pm Chick flick time Time for a date with Bond. “It’s about time Liverpool had a cinema that you feel you can get dressed up for,” says Jeni. With panoramic views over Liverpool ONE, the Gallery Bar is a suitably dramatic place to take in a drink before enjoying the company of Mr Craig. Maybe the West Kirby boy will breeze by for a Martini one day…
8.30pm Ending the day in style Dinner at Zizzi. Time to reflect on their day over a delicious selection of Italian antipasti and, of course, a glass or two of wine. Well, they’ve had a tough day. The girls’ verdict? “To me, Liverpool is a true melting pot. New shops, a new city centre and a fantastic new atmosphere, Liverpool can take it on board and still stay the same,” says Ragz. “We’ve had an amazing day,” says Jeni, “but one day just isn’t enough. I’ve got to come back next week. I’ve still not found the right bag.” Ragz orders a large chocolate truffle cake… 17

A WALK AROUND
LIVERPOOL ONE It's been under wraps for eight years. Time to get to know the heart of Liverpool again. Start your exploration in Church Street, opposite Marks and Spencers, where the new Keys Court leads to Peter's Lane, burrowing its way into Liverpool ONE. But, before you set off, take a look down. The gold cross on the pavement symbolizes the place where the old church of St Peter's stood. Before the cathedral was built, this was the city's principal church, and was the first parish church built in Lancashire after the reformation. The passage takes you through to School Lane, where the shops offer tempting high-end fashions. The striking black granite and bronze cladding was designed by' Sir Jeremy Dixon, who used similar materials in London’s Henry Moore sculpture gallery, and in the new arcade at the Royal Opera House. Soon, you’ll be able to take a left here to the Bluecoat - passing what used to be Quiggins but instead, after careful restoration of the building's original moulded ceilings, will be home to Jigsaw. For now though, keep walking through Peter’s Lane arcade (1), lined with its elegant boutiques. Take a left turn when you exit the arcade onto College Lane. About half way up, turn left into the Bluecoat by the entrance to the wonderful Bluecoat Display Centre. At over 290 years old, the Bluecoat is the city’s oldest building, and its secret cloisters are a great place to stop and enjoy a coffee. Note the unusual vertical columns of bricks (‘stack bonded’) in the stylish new £12million extension, designed by Dutch architects, Biq. This wing, partially damaged during a Second

1) Peter’s La ne arcade World War bombing raid, now houses a handsome series of galleries and an intimate new performance space. Walk through the original Queen Anne building (2) and continue out towards its School Lane entrance. This façade has remained virtually unchanged since the days when the Bluecoat was a charitable school, where the pupils wore – what else – blue coats. In Tudor times, blue was the colour of alms-giving and charity. Turn right out of here and look up at the gold box, suspended two floors above pavement level (3): this is a suitably dramatic flourish for the city's most celebrated hair stylist, Herbert, and his 'Bling Building'. It's well named, for the building's golden coat is actually made from the same material used in Euro coins. The windows have a perfect line of sight to the birds perched at the top of the Liver Buildings. Turn right at the top of School Lane, onto Hanover Street, and keep walking past the new home for BBC Radio Merseyside. A right turn here takes you into College Lane. Take a look at the BBC building’s curved rear facade echoing the Bluecoat’s circular clock tower, in front. This thoroughfare now links the bars and clubs around Concert Square with Liverpool ONE's exciting Leisure Terrace and will soon become one of the city's most popular routes for an evening stroll. Liverpool ONE has remained faithful to the city's

coat 2) Blue ancient street plan - and, in many ways, it's opened up routes through the town that have been off-limits for far too long. This is one. Cross over the wide, tree lined boulevard of Paradise Street, and, depending on your level of fitness, climb the Allies & Morrison designed Zigzag stairway, or take the elevator. This splits in two the dramatic leisure and retail building, faced in textured limestone (4). The architects’ vision was of a sea-worn boulder, smoothed by the tides, and cleft in two. When the buildings were officially opened by the Princess Royal, the Allies & Morrisons architects were ready to explain this, with a pair of pebbles in their pockets. Their impressive height also brings to mind the walls of the original city castle, which once loomed up from this site. Wall

Street, between Cult Clothing and New Look is named in the castle’s honour. At the summit of Zigzag you’ll find the entrance to the 14 screen ODEON. Keep walking through, and out into the restaurantlined Leisure Terrace. Cross over the elevated walkway (5), and look down on the busy, two-level shopping streets, laced along their length by bridges and, uniquely for Liverpool, outdoor escalators! The five-and-a-half acre Chavasse Park (6), ahead, is flanked, to the left, by the soon-to-open Hilton Hotel and, to the right, the Cesar Pelli designed One Park West residential building: Argentinean Pelli designed Kuala Lumpur’s Petronas Twin Towers, the tallest buildings in the world before being surpassed by a the Taipei 101 skyscraper. Cross the park, taking a moment to wander onto the circular glass skylight at the centre. Below your feet - and stretching all the way to Paradise Street - the Q Park car park has space for 2,000 cars. Wander down the hairpin-shaped terraces to your left, and enjoy the views over to the Albert Dock, from where the ‘lyver’ or, muddy, pool once cut in from the banks of the Mersey. You can learn about the park’s award winning design in our panel, right. At the foot of the path, turn back on yourself. The grasses alongside the water feature

represent those that would have grown alongside the creek when, 800 years ago, a Royal Charter gave the tiny township city status. The splashing fountains (7), with their tidal readings, recall the ebb and flow of the river. Watch your feet if you get too close! Walk towards John Lewis, up Thomas Steers Way, and you’re actually walking along the edge of the original dock. Sugarhouse Steps on your left are named after one of the dock’s principle imports. They rise in a grand, semicircular arc from Customs House Place, named after the grand building which stood here until it was damaged during the Blitz. Take a look through the viewing glass here (surrounded by the circular railings) and you can spy the original dock walls, miraculously intact after 300 years. Walk on, keeping John Lewis to your right, and you’ll arrive at Paradise Street (8) where Manestys Lane, one of the city’s oldest streets, slightly diverted these days, will take you back to Peter’s Lane and on, through Key’s Court, to Church Street. Your walk might only have taken you half an hour but, from the Bluecoat to the banks of the Mersey, 800 years of the city’s history has never been closer...
Chavasse Park recently scooped first prize at the BALI National Landscape Awards, with judges commenting that this small urban oasis featured ‘building materials and workmanship that were second to none’. We spoke to Jenny Ferguson, a landscape artist for site architects BDP. “It was a challenge!” she laughs. “From the banks of the Mersey, the park actually has 13 changes in level.” To give the park a ‘lived-in’ feel, a range of semi-mature trees were planted, but these actually rest above a base made of thousands of polystyrene blocks. “We had to consider the strict weight tolerances of the car park roof,” Ferguson reveals. “This is no ordinary forest!” Less weighty are the park’s flowerbeds, set to add a splash of colour all year round. “We wanted to use familiar plants such as azaleas and griselina, with more recent introductions such as New Zealand evergreen grass, Dianella. As the Albert Dock is less than 100m away, we had to factor in salt resistance into our choice of species.” But it’s not just the plants which rise from the ground... “The water features, including a lunar pool, were designed by Gros Max, based in Glasgow, to sit above the actual site of Liverpool’s first wet dock. The undulating profile of the 83 fountains references the pioneering tidal recording work by the original dock master, William Hutchison. And water isn’t just a decorative feature at Chavasse Park, as Jenny reveals: “Rain water from the adjacent building is harvested and used to irrigate the plants." So, next time you stretch out and enjoy the grass, just think of all the hard work that had to happen before you could simply relax…
