ELCOME to our 12 page guide to the most musical week in Liverpool’s calendar. We have the Mathew Street Festival, International Beatle Week, and a packed programme of events on all around the city. Mathew Street Music Festival is the annual celebration of one of the city’s cultural cornerstones – music. This fantastic free two day event will be 18 years old this year, with over 80 hours of live outdoor music, it celebrates cover, original and new bands which attract local people and visitors from all over Europe. This year 95 bands perform from as far as USA, Brazil, Argentina, Japan, Switzerland, Russia, Sweden and Scotland will be performing, with huge TV screens around the site to improve the viewing experience. The Fringe Festival for original bands runs from Friday to Monday in venues across the city offering a vast array of music. If you love music, it gives you the bands that people are whispering about, breaking boundaries, running in over 30 venues across town. Councillor Joe Anderson, Leader of Liverpool City Council and the Directors of Liverpool’s Mathew Street Music Festival Ltd says: “In terms of variety and quality this year’s Festival should be our best ever - a first class tribute to The Beatles and a celebration of the MOBO’s coming to Liverpool will give the festivities a very special edge. “The line-up for the 2010 festival will make for a great weekend of music for all ages and tastes. The new themes are a brilliant addition and ensure the festival remains fresh and vibrant. They also show how the city has influenced the world and underlines why we are bidding to England’s first UNESCO City of Music.” With six outdoor live stages over the two days, plus the fringe festival for its third year – across more than 40 indoor venues, and the Albert Dock festivities, the hardest job seems to be trying to work out how to fit everything in. Remember life of a legend Bill Heckle

THIS year we celebrate what would have been John Lennon's 70th birthday. To mark his extraordinary and influential life, musical stars of all eras will unite on stage for an emotional charity concert, Lennon Remembered, on Thursday

December 9 at the Echo Arena. Thirty years on from his tragic early death, the memorial concert will form the crescendo of two months of celebrations of John Lennon’s unique contribution to the culture of, not only the

city of his birth, but also his immortal position on the global popular music landscape. John’s appeal continues to span the generations, and musicians from every era will congregate on stage to perform unique versions of

Lennon’s most famous songs – and, no doubt, one or two forgotten gems alongside them as well. Bill Heckle, Director of The Cavern Club, says: “We have enjoyed many great musical nights in this city over the years, but an evening dedicated

to John, attended by those who knew and loved him, as well as those who worked with him, plus the thousands of fans who, purely and simply, have been touched and moved by his music throughout our lives, will really make it into something special.”

Following the success of the Albert Dock Stage in 2008, the Albert Dock Tenants Business Association has been working closely with the organisers of the Mathew Street Music Festival to add a family stage for the weekend when

Liverpool welcomes to more than 300,000 people to Europe’s biggest free city centre, annual music festival. The Albert Dock Stage will have a diverse programme of local, family friendly talent, including a selection of the legendary Mersey Beat artists. Juice FM Undiscovered will provide an opportunity for local, unsigned and original artists to perform on the British Waterways Floating Stage.

OVE, peace and understanding. The three themes that permeated the Beatles' entire back-catalogue form the bases for a spectacular centrepiece to the celebrations of the Fab Four at the Anglican cathedral. Organiser Bill Heckle explains: “At the end of the Beatles Anthology, Paul said that the key themes in their music were always love, peace and understanding. When you look back through their music it jumps out at you. Well, that thought stuck in my mind for years, and then, this time it seemed like the perfect opportunity to do something in Liverpool to mark that.” So Love, Peace & Understanding will take place this Saturday, August 28, at the Anglican Cathedral. Heralded by the cathedral bells chiming Across the Universe, the event will feature two stages, a big screen, and musicians from Merseyside as well as from every continent in the world, including Mark McGann and a string quartet. There will be music from the Beatles and each of the band members’ solo careers. The concert not only features some of the finest musicians and singers from all over the world performing this music, but will also feature the Love & Joy Gospel choir, classical extracts, the spoken word and much more, all in the breath-taking surroundings of the Anglican Cathedral. Ticket prices for the concert range from £15 to £50 VIP tickets, and are available from www.cavernclub.org or on 08705 344 4444. Proceeds will go to cathedral funds.

local talent will come in the form of the Juice FM Undiscovered with of course a few Beatles inspired artists along the way; it will make for a brilliant day out.” Cllr Wendy Simon, Liverpool City Council cabinet member for culture and tourism, adds: “The floating stage was a big hit in 2008 and I’m sure it’ll have people dancing and rocking in the dock once again.’’ ● For more details about the events go to www.albertdock.com

MATHEW STREET FESTIVAL

THERE'S nothing quite like settling down to listen to your favourite album, except perhaps hearing it live from some of the world's best impersonators... This year sees the introduction of the Classic Albums Stage in Derby Square. Head down to enjoy your favourite tracks from impressive tribute acts. Playing together since 2002, Guns 2 Roses (Sunday, 2pm) are definitely ones to watch. Approved by various members of Guns N Roses, they even have the original GNR drummer Steven Adler playing with them from time to time. Guns 2 Roses have played the same London clubs and venues that GNR did in the 80s, from the Marquee Club to the Mean Fiddler and Hard Rock Cafe in Hyde Park. They've also sold out the Cavern Club two nights in a row. Playing many songs from Appetite For Destruction, GNR Lies and Use Your Illusion I and II, they're a must see for any fan of rock covers. But, if you're looking for something more Beatle-themed, check out Marcus Cahill, billed as The World's Best John Lennon Tribute Show (Monday, 5pm). Famous with fans across the world, Marcus has performed in the USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Wales, Netherlands, Hong Kong and Australia. He'll be singing the album Imagine, and he's well worth a look.

I love the festival it’s when the real people come out Liverpool bands tell Jade Wright about their make or break Mathew Street gigs

OUR band did two fabulous shows in 2005 and 2006 on the big stages down at the Pier head. Looking out over the vast crowd with the river twinkling behind it and using the Liver Building clock to gauge how much stage time we had left will be a memory I will take with me to my grave. “This photograph taken by Liverpool pap legend Dave Evans sums up the day perfectly. It kick started the band in many ways, we'd been in the margins up until then. “Does this train stop on Merseyside? had just been released and literally thousands showed up to watch us perform in beautiful Mersey sunshine. “I love Mathew Street weekend, it's when the real people come out to enjoy themselves. Detractors tell me that it's just cover bands but that isn't true. The fringe provides plenty of brand new music. Those who can't afford tickets for shows can have a full day’s entertainment all for free. “Mathew Street is a success story, it belongs to the ordinary folk of Liverpool. Personally, I rarely watch any of the bands, I just hang out of my window watching the crowds below shouting down at old friends I haven't seen for a while 'John! What time are the Argentinian REM on?!!” ● Ian Prowse, singer with Amsterdam, www.amsterdam-music.co.uk

LSO new this year is the Female Stage in Williamson Square. Taking place on Bank Holiday Monday, it features, among others, the fabulous Merseyside all-girl group Cocabelles (11am), as well as Amy Housewine's Tribute to Amy Whinehouse at noon and the superb Connie Lush (2pm). Connie is widely recognised as one of the finest blues singers that the United Kingdom has ever

produced. She was voted Best UK Female Vocalist by readers of Blues In Britain for five separate years, earning a richly deserved place in the Gallery of the Greats. She's also made her name on the continent, particularly in France, where she was honoured in the French Blues Trophies awards as European Singer of the Year. The headline act comes courtesy of the fabulous Beryl Marsden. Toxteth born Beryl was one of the finest singers to

come out of the Liverpool beat boom. Born Beryl Hogg (no relation to Gerry Marsden) she began her professional career backed by a band called the Crew and was signed to Decca Records in 1963. She released two singles on the label that somehow failed to click, the first - I Know - rather inexplicably and the second, a cover of When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes, when the Supremes' version eclipsed it. Beryl jumped to

EMI's Columbia label in 1965 and lasted there for two singles, of which Break-A-Way is still remembered fondly to this day. She's a real treat, and well worth heading down to the Williamson Square stage to see.

Make DAVE MONKS lives and breathes new music. As the presenter of The Pool, on BBC Radio Merseyside, Dave plays the best local signed and unsigned acts each week. This year, he’s hosting the new bands’ stage for the Mathew Street festival. “I always look forward to being involved with the festival both as compère and attending some of the fringe events over the weekend,” explains Dave. “We’ve been building up to the event on the programme with sessions and interviews with some of the new bands playing, this will

HAPPY MEMORIES: Amsterdam on the new bands stage at the Mathew Street Festival Picture: DAVE EVANS

Two years ago my band were due to play our first gig in Liverpool at the Zanzibar for the fringe festival. We'd only ever played one gig before so we thought it would be a good idea to book a warm up gig at an intimate venue for the night before - which turned out to be a big mistake. “It was a disaster and I think we all wondered if we should even bother to carry on as a band, but, as we had the fringe fest gig booked for that evening at the Zanzibar, we had to put our doubts behind us and honour the booking. “Good job we did, because after a desperately shocking start to our set, about halfway through something clicked, and we started to produce the sound we were capable of. “We won the large crowd over, tony from the zanzi gave us a some nice encouragement after the gig, as did a passing Guardian reviewer who happened to catch our set “We haven't looked back since, swelling to a ridiculous nine piece funk/reggae band and being main support to the likes of ROX at Sound City 2010, Chris Helme from the Seahorses at Mojo, and most recently The Apples at the Masque. so the moral of the story is, the fringe fest can actually save a band. True story. “We also played the fringe fest last year and we are playing it again this year on Monday August 30, upstairs at the zanzibar, but this time we play acoustic - due to the drummer's honeymoon.” ● Collen Chandler, singer with We The Undersigned, www.myspace.com/ jointheundersigned

sure you take a dip in The Pool conclude with reaction and live sets straight after the day on my programme (The Pool on Sunday 29th from 8pm on BBC Radio Merseyside). “It’s another strong line up with a good showcase of Merseyside talent. I still think this is the stage that could be expanded to over two days due to the amount of great bands about – something to consider next year maybe?” Here is Dave’s selection of his highlights from some of the bands playing on the Sunday... ■ The Tea Street Band – Featuring some of the lads from The

■ Strawhouses – Similarly in Paul Donnelly they have a great songwriter who really deserves to be heard on a large scale, they have just released a great single called Malaise.

MUST-SEE: Strawhouses will be on the New Bands Stage

Maybes? With their side project, more dance orientated than their last band but ideal to get things bouncing early doors.

■ The Wicked Whispers – Michael Murphy’s’ psychedelic band have got some really imaginative

new songs they have only done a few low-key gigs so far and are really looking forward to playing their first big gig. Their sound shifts you back to the late 60s early 70s sound the likes of the Donovan and Electric Prunes.

■ The Rialto Burns – They signed to Gung Ho recordings recently and released their debut single called Radiate – they sound a little bit Joy Division and a little Editors or Interpol if you had to describe them, check these out in the afternoon spot. ■ Picture Book – I have had these in session a couple of times

and even put them on during Sound City as I was that impressed with their tracks. There are only three of them but they are amazing live and are attracting plenty of interest, they write classic pop songs set to a backdrop of beautifully produced soundscapes, I’m expecting big things from them in the future – make sure you see them for free while you can. That is just a selection – so many to see, others playing on the 29th at Williamson Square are: The Bo-Weevils, Married To The Sea, The Temps, Las Gambados, Ragz, Fly With Vampires, and The Sixteen Tonnes.

A fitting tribute

THE Backbeat Beatles are undoubtedly one of the best Beatles tribute bands on the circuit and have built up an unrivalled reputation. The band was formed in 1994 by musician/actor Chris O'Neill, inspired by his successful acting performance in the BAFTA Award winning Beatle film “Backbeat”. The lads are all from the Liverpool area and they perform with an energy and spontaneity that makes for a fun, enjoyable evening for everyone involved. The Backbeat Beatles offer superb renditions of favourite Beatles hits from Love Me Dom through to Let It Be. Along with this, their excellent level of musicianship and irrepressible Scouse wit and humour means that their success continues to spiral. The band tour worldwide and have also appeared in many theatre shows, including currently The Sgt. Flavour from Pepperland PEPPERLAND was the first band to cover Free as a Bird, when the song was first released, and the band also amazed the Beatle Week audience last year by playing the Las Vegas “Love” show arrangements of Beatles songs, including the opening number of their Philharmonic Hall show, the a cappella version of Because. Lead guitarist Mikael Isacsson has performed in Liverpool for Beatle Week many times, including with his previous band Lenny Pane, and was inducted to the Beatle Week Hall of Fame last year. In Sweden, there have

been Beatles vs. Stones concerts, with Pepperland going up against Rocks Off. Pepperland are bringing a new band member this year – Ola Johansson on Höfner bass. He comes from a heavy metal background, and although much of The Beatles songbook is a different direction for him, you can guarantee he’s going to rock Helter Skelter! Along with Mikael and Ola, Pepperland are Benny Karlsson on drums, Per Umaerus on Rickenbacker, and Olle Bengtsson on keyboard and occasional guitars. www.pepperland.se

THE story of the how the blue beetle got its coat is a South American folk tale – the story goes that the colours of the Brazilian flag are taken from the coats of green beetles and blue beetles. These BlueBeetles may have blue coats too, but theirs are more likely to have velvet collars. The come from the magic city of Rio de Janeiro. They have been playing together since 2008, and perform a wide repertoire of Beatles songs. Fred Rios (lead guitar),

Felipe Coe (drums), Mario Vitor (bass guitar) and Marcus Romariz (rhythm guitar), think The Beatles’ songs can change the world – they warn people about starvation, war, and global warming through the messages and advice they contain. As they make their Liverpool debut, The BlueBeetles have a slogan which they want to share: “A Beatle way of being and playing, a Beatle way of living”. This is it.

You request ’em... he’ll play ’em! THE PEN & WIG CANADA'S finest is back for his 11th consecutive year at the festival. Since he began his Beatle journey to Liverpool back in 2000, he has recorded and produced four CDs dedicated to the work of his musical heroes. The Beatles, which, of course, have had rave reviews from TV and radio alike. He has opened for groups like The Beach Boys, The Fab Faux, Rain, and many others. He also set a world record by performing all 214 officially-released songs by The Beatles in a non-stop

two-and-a-half hour medley in Cleveland, Ohio in 2004, then again in Louisville, Kentucky, in 2005 and again in Liverpool in 2006. In 2006, Hal was inducted as the first recipient of the Beatles Hall of Fame Award in Kentucky, and was presented with a John Lennon Epiphone Casino electric guitar. Hal has travelled the world over, performing his 1960s shows and Beatle shows to packed houses in Sweden, France, Belgium, the Caribbean, USA, Argentina, Australia and Canada, so the

only natural thing for Hal to do was to bring his own festival to his home province of Nova Scotia. He started the very first Annual Maritime Beatle Event in 2006 to a packed house. Julia Baird, John Lennon's sister, was his guest speaker. Again in 2008, he was inducted to the first Beatle Festival Hall Of Fame Awards ceremony in Liverpool. Come out and see his one-man shows and witness why folk keep asking him to come back year after year. You LEGEND: Hal Bruce outside The Cavern request ’em . . . he’ll play ’em! Club

MATHEW STREET FESTIVAL

T

HIS year we mark two key anniversaries – the start and the end of The Beatles.Fifty years ago this month, the five-piece Beatles left for Hamburg, contracted to fairground showman Bruno Koschmider for a 48-night residency. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Pete Best and Stuart Sutcliffe went out to seek fame and fortune. The rest is history. But 10 years on, in 1970, The Beatles were no more. The band that championed peace and love were at each others' throats. Paul McCartney publicly announced his departure from the band on 10 April, a week before the release of his first, self-titled solo album. Pre-release copies of the record included a press statement with a self-written interview, explaining the end of his involvement with the Beatles and his hopes for the future. The final new Beatles song, Harrison's I Me Mine had been recorded on 3 January 1970. John Lennon, in Denmark at the time, did not participate. Their Let It Be album, taken from the Get Back sessions, were given to Phil Spector to put together. Known for his Wall of Sound approach, he had recently produced John's solo single Instant Karma! In addition to remixing the Get Back material, Phil edited, spliced and overdubbed several of the recordings that had been intended as "live". Paul was unhappy with the producer's treatment of the material and particularly dissatisfied with the producer's orchestration of The Long and Winding Road, which involved a choir and thirty-four-piece instrumental ensemble. He unsuccessfully attempted to halt the release of Phil Spector's version. But on May 8 1970, the Spector-produced Let It Be was released. The accompanying single, The Long and Winding Road, was the band's last - it was released in the United States, but not Britain. The Let It Be documentary film followed later in the month; at the Academy Award ceremony the next

year, it would win the Oscar for Best Original Song Score. Paul filed a suit for the dissolution of the Beatles on 31 December 1970. Legal disputes continued long after the band's break-up, and the dissolution of the partnership did not take effect until 1975. But to all intents and

purposes, the Fab Four were no more. John, Paul, George and Ringo all released solo albums in 1970. Further albums followed from each, sometimes with the involvement of one or more of the others. Ringo's was the only album to include compositions and performances by all four, albeit on separate songs. With Ringo's collaboration, George staged The Concert for Bangladesh in New York City in August 1971 with sitar maestro Ravi Shankar. Other than an unreleased jam session in 1974, John and Paul never recorded together again. Of the solo albums, George's All Things Must Pass was the most

successful. His increasing productivity, coupled with his difficulties in getting The Beatles to record his music in the later days, meant that by the end of the group's career he had amassed a considerable stockpile of unreleased material. He had already recorded and released two solo albums, Wonderwall Music (a soundtrack to the Wonderwall film in which he blended Indian and Western sounds) and Electronic Sound (an experiment in using a Moog synthesiser). All Things Must Pass was a critical and commercial success, topping the charts on both sides of

the Atlantic, and producing the number-one hit single My Sweet Lord as well as the top-10 single What Is Life. The album was co-produced by Phil Spector, and the musicians included Eric Clapton, Dave Mason, Billy Preston, and Ringo Starr. Lennon's emotional debut solo album, John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, included Mother and Working Class Hero, banned by BBC Radio for its inclusion of swearing. Ringo released two albums before 1970 was out. Sentimental Journey featured Starr's renditions of many pre-rock standards and included the arranger talents of Quincy

Jones, Maurice Gibb, George Martin and McCartney, among others. Although Ringo was the third member of the group to issue solo work (after George Harrison and John Lennon), his work was notable for being the least avant-garde, in light of the experimental, soundtrack or live releases his bandmates had already released. Sentimental Journey received fair reviews upon its release, although many critics found the idea of Starr covering standards a bit odd considering his musical background. The pub on the cover of the album is The Empress in Dingle, which is one of the nearest pubs to Ringo's place of birth. The superimposed figures in the windows of the pub are Ringo's relatives. Paul McCartney's debut, McCartney, would follow three weeks after Sentimental Journey's release. McCartney was notable for the fact that Paul performed the entire album (all instruments and voices) by himself, except for some backing vocals from wife Linda. He stated that he played "bass, drums, acoustic guitar, lead guitar, piano, Mellotron, organ, toy xylophone, and bow and arrow". Among the more notable songs from the album is Maybe I'm Amazed, one of Paul's many love songs for his first wife. Advance copies sent to the press included a Q & A package containing questions McCartney could — and probably would — have been asked about the Beatles' break-up and their future. He stated that he did not know whether the group's break-up would be temporary or permanent. The Beatles' music and enduring fame were commercially exploited in various other ways, outside the

band members' creative control. All This and World War II (1976) was an unorthodox nonfiction film that combined World War II newsreel footage with covers of Beatles songs by two dozen major recording artists. The Broadway musical Beatlemania, a nostalgia revue featuring four musicians performing as the Beatles, opened in early 1977 and proved popular, spinning off five separate touring productions. The Beatles tried and failed to block the 1977 release of Live! at the Star-Club in Hamburg, Germany, 1962. The independently issued album compiled recordings made during the group's Hamburg residency, taped on a basic recording machine with one microphone. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978), a musical film starring the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton, was a commercial failure. George Harrison said at the time: “People were just thinking the Beatles were like public domain”, said Harrison. “You can't just go around pilfering the Beatles' material.”
