Two day festival brings our city alive with music by JADE WRIGHT WELCOME to our 12 page guide to the most musical week in Liverpool’s calendar. We have the Mathew Street Festival, International Beatles Week, and a packed programme of events on all around the city. Mathew Street Music Festival is the annual celebration of one of the city’s cultural cornerstones – music. This fantastic free two-day event will be 19 years old this year, with over 80 hours of live outdoor music, it celebrates cover, original and new bands which attract local people and visitors from all over Europe. This year dozens of bands
perform from as far as USA, Brazil, Argentina, Japan, Switzerland, Russia, Sweden and Scotland will be performing. The Fringe Festival for original bands runs from Friday to Monday in venues across the city offering a vast array of music. If you love music, it gives you the bands that people are whispering about, breaking boundaries, running in over 30 venues across town. With five outdoor live stages over the two days, plus the fringe festival for its third year – across more than 40 indoor venues, and the Albert Dock festivities, the hardest job seems to be trying to work out how to fit everything in. The guitar-thrashing, leather clad musical We Will Rock You, officially crowned the public’s favourite show at this year’s Olivier Awards, hits the Liverpool Empire on September 6 and rocks for three weeks in Liverpool with a cast featuring Noel Sullivan, Ian Reddington, Earl Carpenter and Liverpool’s Leon Lopez. Based on over two dozen Queen songs with a script and direction by Ben Elton, We Will Rock You has been one of the West End’s biggest attractions since it opened at London’s Dominion Theatre almost nine years ago. Queen’s Brian May said: “The touring production of WWRY has taken our show to new places in more ways than one! The London show thunders on, and continues to delight audiences, but the touring cast and band have brought a new interpretation and style all of their own. VERY year, the Mathew Street Festival marks a moment in history. This year, it will commemorate the life of George Harrison, who died 10 years ago this year. As part of the programming on the Derby Square stage, there will be a special celebration of the music of George Harrison. This year’s Mathew Street Music Festival will take place on five stages throughout Liverpool city centre and there will be a distinct Mersey theme. Although there is an international flavour with bands from Argentina, Brazil, Norway, Germany and the USA and visitors expected from over
30 countries, the overall emphasis for the Festival’s 19th year is on Liverpool’s rich cultural links and heritage. More than half of the performers will be from the Merseyside region with many of them making their festival debut. While, for the first time ever there will be no dedicated Beatles stage, there is a strong Beatles and Merseybeat presence. Councillor Wendy Simon, Liverpool City Council’s cabinet member for culture and tourism, says: “This year’s festival is the 19th and promises to be one of the best ever. We have sponsors for all the stages and it is really encouraging to see the support we are getting from
all over the world from local, national and international companies including giving new bands a great opportunity to play at gigs in the city. “Whatever your musical taste is, whether it is the sounds of the 60’s or the latest bands, you will find it at the festival. Family fun guaranteed at Dock FOLLOWING the success of the Albert Dock Family Stage in 2010, the dock will once again celebrate the city’s Mathew Street Music Festival, this time with two days of entertainment and family fun. Albert Dock’s Fab Four Family Stage, situated in Salthouse Dock, has been programmed to reflect the music of Liverpool’s favourite sons, from the MerseyCats’ artists to tribute acts like Paul Kappa and Just John and Paul, who will be playing the Beatles songs. Many of the venues at Albert Dock will have their own programme of indoor music and entertainment during the August Bank Holiday weekend. Taking place on August 28 and 29, the family friendly weekend will be packed with
entertainment both on the floating stage with the MerseyCats’ who will be joined by the Liverpool Sign Choir and in the Dockside venues, with the Cheatles returning to PanAm. City boosts 53 number one hits J
ON Keats is a busy man this August. As entertainment manager for the Cavern, he works on the International Beatles Week Festival as well as the Mathew Street Festival. Plus, this year he’s also hosting the 53 Number Ones stage in Derby Square on Bank Holiday Monday. It will celebrate Liverpool’s 53 number one singles. “I think the fact that we have had so many number ones from the 50s to the present day speaks for itself,” says Jon. “There’s so much to choose from, spanning so many eras of the Liverpool music scene. The Merseybeats will be playing all the Frankie numbers which should be fun. We have a special appearance from Ken Dodd singing his 1965 classic Tears (That’s me doing my Doddy impression by the way!). “So many Beatles and Merseybeats classics on the one stage is never a bad thing. We’re closing the stage with a special George Harrison 10th Anniversary tribute with Nube 9 from Argentina who are the world’s finest George tribute band.” The number ones span from 1953 – Lita Roza’s How Much is that Doggy in the Window – to 2002, with Atomic Kitten’s The Tide is High. “Obviously there is a huge Beatles/solo Beatles presence, but we are a music city full stop,” says Jon. “The number ones really don’t tell the full story as we have produced so many great artists throughout the last 50 odd years and long may it continue.” The festival is now marking 19 years since it began, and during that time it has evolved. “I think the Mathew Street Festival reflects the changes that have happened in the city in general during that period really,” explains Jon. “Both have become world class in so many ways. The infrastructure behind the festival reflects the size and scale of the event and the council’s handling of it really is impressive. “I always say it is Liverpool’s street party. Great live music to suit all tastes. From the array of cover bands to the emerging Liverpool bands, something for everyone.” As well as his own stage, Jon also recommends taking a stroll around the festival. “The Radicals stage should be good on the Monday – Lennon, Dylan, Neil Young, The Jam,” he says. “Also the Made in Liverpool
stages on both days should be excellent. We have old favourites like China Crisis, Supercharge, Up & Running alongside the likes of The Red Suns, Amsterdam and the fantastic Delta Maid.” Jon’s tip for festival-goers is to set your alarm clock. “Get there early to make the most of it,” he says. “You can’t see all the bands you would like to but try and plan your stages in advance as getting to and from the stages can take a while, but above all, just enjoy the atmosphere – there’s nothing and nowhere like it.” And, he says, don’t forget to take a pitstop for food. “Take your pick, we are now truly spoilt in that department,” he smiles. “The new Pan Asian restaurant Matou at the Pier Head is well worth a try. Views of the river from the restaurant and spectacular views of the Three Graces from their outside terrace.” After the main stages finish, there are plans for aftershows in venues across the city. “The whole of the city is the aftershow,” laughs Jon. “The music in the bars just keeps on going ‘til the wee small hours. If you are looking for more Beatles, we have The Fab Four Beatles Show direct from Las Vegas at the Philharmonic Hall on the Monday which features Liverpool’s own Gavin Pring as George – it’s a great show.

FESTIVAL INFO Liverpool is one of the most vibrant and safest cities in the world, but as in any large, busy city, crime can sometimes occur. To make your visit safer and more enjoyable: • Secure your vehicle and don’t leave anything on display - even if it seems of little value to you, such as a coat or small change. • If you have a sat nav system, take it with you; wipe any visible marks on your windscreen and place the holder and wiring in the boot. • When using cash points go in daylight and avoid getting cash out alone if you’ve been drinking. Look around before inserting your card and only take out what you need. GETTING THERE Drinking Please drink sensibly and do not bring glass into the festival area. • Don’t leave drinks unattended. • Don’t accept drinks from strangers. • Use plastic bottles and dispose of them in the recycling bins provided. • When leaving the festival licensed area of the city and after 6pm on the event days, alcohol may not be consumed on the streets - with fines of up to £500 for breaching these laws. • Alcohol may only be consumed in and around the stage areas between 12pm 6pm. Under no circumstances can alcohol be consumed in the shopping areas of the city. Failure to adhere to this, will lead to confiscation of alcohol and a fine of up to £500. A Challenge 21 policy will be in place, please ensure that if you are lucky enough to look under 21, you have ID available to purchase or consume alcohol at the festival. It is advisable to check accessibility with the relevant organisation before attending any event.

Queen Square Bus Station and bus stops in Sir Thomas Street will be closed all day on Sunday and Monday (except for ‘Night Buses’ which will run, as normal, from Queen Square Bus Station). Buses will pick up at either Liverpool ONE Bus Station or from temporary bus stops on Lime Street (outside St Georges Hall). All Cross River buses will run to and from Liverpool ONE Bus Station only. IFTY years ago this summer, The Beatles released their first record. Of course, it wasn’t the Beatles as we know them now, but The Beat Brothers, who recorded My Bonnie alongside Tony Sheridan. Tony, the first young rock musician ever to be allowed to play live electric guitar on British TV, got to know the Beatles in Hamburg, when he played at the Kaiserkeller and the Top Ten Club on Hamburg’s Reeperbahn. Here he was accompanied by various groups, including Gerry & the Pacemakers, and The Beatles, who at that time featured Pete Best and Stuart Sutcliffe. The Beatles not only backed Tony on stage – they all lived together for several months, during which time Paul, John and George learned much, calling Sheridan the “Teacher”, a term which Paul uses to this day. Tony and The Beatles recorded several titles for Polydor including My Bonnie, Why and others. In October 1961, Polydor released My Bonnie (Mein Herz ist bei dir nur) which appeared on the German charts under the name Tony Sheridan and the Beat Brothers – a generic name used for whoever happened to be in Sheridan’s back-up group, although as Paul McCartney has said: “They didn’t like our name and said, ‘Change to the Beat Brothers, this is more understandable for the German audience.’ We went along with it... it was a record.” Ringo Starr joined Tony’s band in Hamburg, while The Beatles went home to Liverpool, leaving Stuart Sutcliffe to continue his studies at the art school there. The story goes that it was My Bonnie that brought The Beatles to the attention of Brian Epstein. George Harrison had a German copy of the record, which Stuart Sutcliffe had sent to him, as he was still in Hamburg. George lent it to Bob Wooler (The Cavern Club DJ) who played it at various venues. On October 28, 1961, the 27-year-old Epstein, manager of the record department in his father’s NEMS music store in Whitechapel Street, Liverpool, was asked for the record by an 18-year-old boy, Raymond Jones. Epstein could find nothing on his files about The Beatles or the record, but the following day it was requested again by two girls, this time mentioning that The Beatles had been seen playing at the Cavern, a club in nearby Mathew Street.

Similarly, Paul McCartney has said: “Brian (Epstein) knew perfectly well who The Beatles were, they were on the front page of the second issue of Mersey Beat.” Nevertheless, the interest in the record eventually led Epstein to make his way to the Cavern, during lunch hour on November 9, 1961. Epstein said of that performance: “I was immediately struck by their music, their beat, and their sense of humour on stage – and, even afterwards, when I met them, I was struck again by their personal charm. And it was there
that, really, it all started. After the performance, he went into the dressing room, which he later called “as big as a broom cupboard”, to talk to them. The Beatles, who were all regular NEMS customers, immediately recognised him before Epstein could congratulate them on their performance. The Beatles were scheduled to play at the club over the next three weeks, and Epstein was always there to watch them. Epstein contacted Allan Williams (their previous promoter/manager), to confirm that Williams no longer had any ties to them, but Williams advised Epstein “not to touch them with a barge pole”, because of a fee they had refused to pay him while playing in Hamburg. Pete Best was replaced by Ringo Starr the following year, and a reunion gig of Tony Sheridan and the new Beatles line-up took place at the opening of the Star-Club. Between 1962-67, Tony
Sheridan was the so-called “King of the Star-Club”, the house singer much loved by audiences. During the early Hamburg years, he recorded several albums for Polydor with various groups, the most popular recordings, including the hit Skinny Minnie, with The Big Six from Glasgow. Tony has remained very active in the music business, touring all over the world and recording his own albums, most recently Vagabond. Today, together with an Irish and two South American musicians, Tony presents a live show with all manner of songs (including an enigmatic version of his old friend Paul’s Yesterday) and continues to reach new fans. New bands are M A D E I N festival’s future T HE Mathew Street Festival may attract a huge number of tribute bands each year, but at its heart there’s also a great deal of original music. Dave Monks hosts the Made in Liverpool Stage this year, a celebration of the city’s music scene, with new bands and some more established Scouse acts. This year the stage will be situated in Williamson Square on Sunday and Monday from 12-6pm. “The idea is to have a selection of established names alongside some of the great new emerging bands from the city,” says Dave. “There are so many bands I am looking forward to seeing over the two days. Every one of the emerging bands are strong this year but especially look out for Fly With Vampires, The Wicked Whispers, and The Big House which features ex Zuton Paul Molloy and the amazing voice of Candie Payne. “It is also great to have Delta Maid play on the Monday – she’s had such a successful year releasing her debut album on Geffen records. Amongst the new talent we have some real Liverpool treats from the likes of John Head (Shack) and his new band, Ian Prowse and Amsterdam, China Crisis, and Tommy Scott (Space) and the Red Scare. There are plenty of recognisable songs to hear.” What’s the best thing about the Mathew Street Festival? “It’s a free event and lets people enjoy themselves across the city for a few days,” says Dave. “For me without doubt it’s being

get an opportunity to play the festival it will continue to thrive.” What would be your dream act to book for the Liverpool stage? “There are so many I would like to see. A few years back Shack and Lightning Seeds played in front of the Liver Building that was a great afternoon. It would be great to have a reunited Shack again but we do have John Head this time. It would also be great one year to have Echo and The Bunnymen, Cast or The La’s headlining this event when you think of what they have done for Liverpool music.” Over the years, the Liverpool bands stage has featured performances from bands that have gone on to bigger things. “There have been so many over the last few years,” says Dave. “Last year Picture Book were immense and pulled a good crowd on the new band stage and the year before The Maybes? and Sound of Guns stay in my mind as being special.” Other than the Made in Liverpool stage, are there any acts on other stages that you’d recommend this year? “To be totally honest my main focus is at Williamson Square and that is my recommendation as to where you should park up over on Sunday and Monday,” he laughs. “I’d also say come down to Liverpool One on Saturday in Chavasse Park for another free event I’ll be hosting which will feature a selection of emerging names from 2pm.” How about the best place to grab a bite to eat and a drink at the festival? Or a really great aftershow party? “For me it will probably be somewhere as close as possible to the stage – an M&S sarnie maybe?” he laughs. “Straight after the Sunday I’ll be going back to the station to present my programme live on Radio Merseyside so there will be no aftershow for me this year.”

John’s tip is to come and enjoy the vibe IF YOU’VE been on a few Saturday nights out in Liverpool over the last 20 years the chances are you’ve heard of Groundpig, or their singer John O’Connell. You may not have heard them play, or even realised they were a band but somewhere, at some time, you’ve probably seen one of their posters or heard them mentioned. Every Friday and Saturday John plays a residency in O´Neills on Hanover Street. This year John is playing the Made in Liverpool stage. “I’m looking forward to playing on one of the main stages in front of a big audience,” he says. “I first played the Mathew Street Festival as part of the band Groundpig and since those early days the festival has become a lot more international. Visitors from far and wide seem to head to Liverpool to enjoy the music
It’s an event for the people LIVERPOOL band Amsterdam have become something of an institution at the Mathew Street Festival. They played the Pier Head stage twice, and were due to headline the 2007 festival, which ended up being scaled back. This year they play the Made in Liverpool stage. Singer Ian Prowse says: “We always look forward to playing to the ordinary people of Merseyside who turn out in their droves every year for this festival. People who perhaps don’t usually attend rock and roll shows along with friends, fans and sunshine, all for free “It’s become the weekend of the year for the people. It’s a massive event nowadays. I always get the feeling that if the council
scrapped it everyone would turn up anyway. We did it twice down at the Pier Head in 2005/6, I always see those shows as the time when Amsterdam became a real contender. “I’m looking forward to seeing my old friend Tommy Scott – The Australians, The Substitutes, Space and The Drellas, I’ve loved all his bands. We go back a long way.” Aside from the Made in Liverpool stage, there’s plenty to enjoy on the fringe. “You could do a lot worse then get up to the Zanzibar and watch my young cousin’s band Sheerwater on the Monday early evening,” says Ian. “He does a better Springsteen than me – imagine that!”
What’s the best thing about the Mathew Street Festival? “The fact that I live smack bang in the middle of the festival and my apartment is like Euston station,” Ian laughs. “Old friends, new friends band members and family are all received and given a drink. “We all go to my local, the mighty Croc on Harrington Street. A fine beverage and the official HQ for all Amsterdam activity. There’s seven of us in our band, then add our crew and we fill the pub up on our own. “It’s great to be out in the city too, and just soak up the atmosphere – it’s almost not about the music, it’s about hanging out, enjoying the crowds.”

The best thing about the festival is the vibe. It’s a great time for local businesses. “My tip would also be to go to the Fringe Festival. There will be a wealth of talented musicians playing all over the city. If you want something a little different then a visit to either Cathedral should be on the itinerary.”
