SUZUKI could soon be building a compact multi-purpose vehicle in India. The firm used its stand at the Auto Expo event in New Delhi to show an example of a vehicle that could cater for India’s rapidly changing car market and where consumer lifestyles are quickly evolving. S they proved with the X6, BMW are not afraid to create a model for a niche that no-one had previously thought existed. So it comes as no surprise that the latest addition to the German firm’s Oxford-built MINI range is a model that seems to have been spawned after an all-night, blue-sky brainstorming session at the marketing department. The MINI Countryman takes its name from a version of the original Mini Traveller estate that featured wooden panelling, but there is little that is twee about the new car. BMW have decided to put the MINI on steroids and turn it into a pumped-up ‘crossover’ car – the missing link between the current car and “a modern Sports Activity Vehicle.” It’s the first MINI with a raised driving position, four doors and a hatchback and is aimed at would-be MINI owners who need more space than the standard car provides. BMW claim that despite the raised ride height, handling won’t be compromised: “Full integration of the passengers within the vehicle creates that driving experience so typical of MINI. And at the same time the MINI Countryman maintains that go-kart feeling likewise so characteristic of MINI, optional MINI ALL4 all-wheel drive offering an additional highlight for the genuine connoisseur.” But they have a sense of humour,

So, on the face of it, you’re paying twice to end up with the car back where it started – near the ground. The MINI Countryman comes as standard with four seats, while a three-seat bench is available as a no-cost option. The interior is said to offer superior comfort also on long distances, with generous legroom, headroom and shoulder freedom. The rear seats move fore-and-aft either individually or in a 60 : 40 (three-seat bench) split, the backrests may be tilted for angle either individually or in a 40 : 20 : 40 (three-seat bench) arrangement, increasing capacity in the luggage compartment from 350 to 1,170 litres (12.2–41.0 cu ft). Under normal driving conditions up to 50 per cent of the engine’s power goes to the rear wheels, under extreme conditions up to 100 per cent. The MINI Countryman comes as standard with Dynamic Stability Control, and Dynamic Traction Control coming either as an option or as a standard feature on the MINI Cooper S Countryman and the MINI Cooper D Countryman. HE furthest most 4x4s ever go off-road is climbing the ramp of a multi-storey car park. But the feeling of security, raised driving position and extra grip provided by these big bruisers is of considerable value to their owners. Better still, perhaps, when there’s the reassurance of knowing that they have a seven-seater car that casts a smaller footprint – in other words takes up less space on the road – than most five-seat family models. At least that’s the case with the second generation Mitsubishi Outlander, a car with a smart take on intelligent packaging. There’s lots to like about the Outlander, from its chunky off-roader styling with that signature ‘Mount Fuji’ grille and well laid out interior to the simplicity of its folding seats. Ease of use is paramount when

you’re altering seat positions and the beauty of the Mitsubishi system is that you don’t need to follow any complex routines. Just press a switch at the side of the boot for three seconds and the second row seats electrically flip forward to create a flat load bay. And while this function is standard on all models, those opting for all bar entry level spec cars also get the Japanese company’s Fold2Hide set-up which transforms the car from a five to seven-seater. A tug on a tab allows the rear pair – which are strictly for kids –
to pop up complete with integrated headrests and inertia reel seatbelts. Of the three engines available – 2.0 and 2.2-litre diesels with six-speed manual transmission and a 2.4-litre petrol automatic – the tested 2.0-litre version is the most popular. It’s a Volkswagen-sourced turbodiesel producing 138bhp and while capable of accelerating to 62mph in 10.8 seconds, the unit feels quite laboured and sounds agricultural too. Once up to speed though it handles confidently and feels stable in adverse conditions thanks to its rally-inspired drivetrain. By turning the Outlander’s rotary selector mounted between the front seats the driver can engage one of three modes to best suit the road and weather – 2WD for normal conditions, 4WD Auto with its 70:30 front-rear split for unsurfaced roads and 4WD Lock for

MOTORISTS have voted Ford as the most popular make of car on sale in Britain – again. More than three decades after it first grabbed UK market leadership from British Leyland, Ford remained the favourite brand of car buyers in 2009. One in six new vehicles leaving
the showrooms last year wore the blue oval and the company registered a total of 316,369 cars despite the biggest economic downturn in two decades. Sales to retail customers were 5,500 higher than in 2008 and Ford’s share of the total car and commercial vehicle market
increased from 16.3% to 16.7%. “Early last year, the Fiesta took over the top UK sales position from the Focus and the pair retained first and second position in the charts right through to the end of the year," said Ford UK managing director Nigel Sharp.
