HEVROLET is entering the compact MPV market with a keenly priced, highly equipped seven seater called the Orlando. With the new Ford Grand C-Max and Mazda5 well in its sights, the American brand which makes most of its cars in South Korea will be targeting cost-conscious families when its newcomer goes on sale at the end of February. Priced from £16,395, the Orlando is not only some £2,000 cheaper than its key competitors but it also features a surprisingly good diesel engine. Capable of averaging almost 50 to the gallon this new 2.0-litre diesel makes the Orlando a splendid touring vehicle. At motorway speeds it’s hardly nudging 2,000 revs thanks to a six speed gearbox and masses of low end torque. Top speed is a claimed 121mph while 0 to 60 acceleration is sub 10 seconds and its CO2 emissions just scrape below the all-important 160g/km tax threshold at 159g/km. In entry level LS trim the 130PS diesel Orlando costs from £17,645 and comes fitted with electronic stability control, air conditioning and privacy glass as standard. Ride quality is above average and although Chevrolet has had a reputation in recent years of no frills interiors, the inside of the Orlando is smart and well finished. Switchgear is similar to that used on the latest models from Vauxhall – which like Chevrolet is part of the General Motors empire – while noise levels, even at cruising speeds, are very well suppressed. As befits its American heritage – it is named after the home of Disneyland in Florida – the Orlando has fairly angular lines. In fact, at a glance, it could be mistaken for an SUV such are its bold looks. A two-three-two seating arrangement makes space in the front and middle more than adequate and there’s just enough room in the third row to accommodate adults. With the rear seats folding flat into the floor it is best to think of the Orlando only as an occasional seven seater and as such cargo space is 454 litres – okay for the average family’s needs. Its capacity rises to a maximum of 1,467 litres with all seats folded which is capacious but not as generous as either the Ford, Mazda or Citroen’s C4 Grand Picasso. Neither is the fold flat system as rapid or easy to use and there’s no convenient place on board to stow the

Chevy’s ready as Orlando blooms luggage blind. With all seats in use luggage space shrinks to 89 litres, although there is some additional underfloor storage behind the tailgate. Inside the Orlando has some good sized oddment bins and bottle holders while a clever touch is a cubby hole concealed behind the stereo system control panel in the centre of the facia. It is big enough to hold a portable music player and on higher specification versions there are iPod and USB sockets behind the flip-up door. A drop-down panoramic mirror is another family-friendly device enabling a watchful eye to be kept
on young passengers in the back. Sliding side doors have come into vogue on the latest batch of compact MPVs but Chevrolet is sticking to a conventional arrangement as it is with the tailgate which is not power operated. The Orlando’s real strength is value for money and the cheapest version is powered by a 141PS 1.8-litre petrol engine. It averages 38.7mpg with emissions of 172g/km.. The mid-range LT models with the 130PS diesel are probably the best bet and are priced from £18,645 which includes 16-inch alloys, climate control, parking sensors and extra trim inside and out.

BOOTIFUL BENZ: Space in the latest E-Class Estate is a monster 695 litres

TTERING the words E-Class and hearse in the same breath may not go down too well with Mercedes-Benz. There’s nothing morbid intended though, nor an intention to suggest the big Benz is boxy or sedate. Flattery is the real motive, because the amount of space in the latest E-Class Estate – launched earlier this year – is a monster 695 litres. To put things into perspective, that’s 120 litres more than even the whopping Volvo V70. Fold the back seats flat and we’re talking bonded warehouse, an immense 1,950. Shifting gear, of virtually any size, is a doddle. But then you can cram loads of stuff into a van. So what’s the big deal with the E-Class? Simple. It does it with more style and grace than anything else, combined with a raft of intelligent features that set a new

standard in the premium sector. That means drivers of the estate get the best of both worlds – core Mercedes qualities like comfort, safety and technology combined with engineering excellence. For instance, every E-Class Estate model features air suspension with rear self-levelling to ensure that no matter how large or heavy the load, the car remains level in all conditions. We tried it with a skipload of detritus. It worked. Then there’s the steely stuff. Every car is now underpinned by a new chassis with 72 per cent of the
body made from ultra high strength steel, resulting in a structure that’s a third stiffer than before. And it’s versatile too. If you don’t require to carry any clobber, but need to load up with kids then the only problem is likely to be breaking up the squabble over which two nab the pair of full-size rear facing child seats that pop up from the floor of the boot. It’s a simple manoeuvre, as is operating the Easy-Pack system for one-touch folding of the rear seats. To be honest I wasn’t that fussed about the Merc when I first stepped into the cabin – all a bit austere Germanic with more upright rather than sloping interior lines. That’s in contrast to the car’s profile, which is super sleek like its saloon and coupe cousins. And in Sport trim there’s a bit more aggression too with a lowdown front grille, integrated daytime running lights and side skirts.

Nissan Leaf lands European Car of the Year crown THE electric revolution has hit a new high, with Nissan’s zero emissions Leaf being named 2011 European Car of the Year. The announcement means the mass produced model, which will cost £23,950 when it hits UK streets next March, has become the first electric vehicle
to land the coveted award in the competition’s 47-year history. Leaf came out tops among 40 contenders to win motoring’s most important accolade, beating rivals from brands like Alfa Romeo, Citroen, Ford, Vauxhall and Volvo. The jury included 57 leading motoring
journalists from 23 European countries. “The jury acknowledged that the Nissan Leaf is a breakthrough for electric cars. It is the first EV that can match conventional cars in many respects,” said jury president Hakan Matson.
The Leaf is powered by a compact electric motor in the front of the car, which drives the front wheels and develops 109PS of power - enough for a maximum speed of 90mph. The electric motor is powered by a Nissan-developed laminated lithium-ion battery

with an output of more than 90kW and the car has a range of 100 miles between charges, making it a practical proposition for many urban drivers. Features like regenerative braking, air-con, satellite navigation, parking camera and on-board IT are included.
