AZDA has set the wheels in motion for a new age of design that the Japanese company pledges will make its cars simply irresistible. And it’s all down to a man known as Speedy and a simple paper knife. Ikuo Maeda, whose nickname stems from his passion for motorsport, is Mazda’s global design chief. As a schoolboy the 51-year-old was given a satin-finished stainless steel paper knife by his dad - also a former Mazda styling guru – and became entranced by its form. Key to that fascination was a subtle twist in the metal that turned a basic blade into a work of art, something oozing both function and beauty. That same twist has been put to stunning effect 35 years down the line in Mazda’s vision of the future – the Shinari concept car that will probably make its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show next spring. The word Shinari refers to the elastic torsion at the moment before energy is released, like in a longbow, catapult or bent bamboo. And a glance at the car bearing the same name leaves the onlooker in no doubt that this is one majestic piece of kit – a sleek, dynamic, classy and potentially lightning fast dream machine. It perfectly illustrates the company’s new design language
Shinari signals brave new world for Mazda called ‘KODO: Soul of Motion’, a fresh expression aimed at ensuring every future car model is instantly recognisable as a Mazda. Maeda, who styled both the RX-8 sports coupe and new Mazda2 supermini, oversees the studios in Europe, Japan and California where teams of designers are collaborating on new ideas and concepts. He believes that there are very few products of industrial design that can be compared to living creatures or entities which convey both energetic motion and invite affection. But look at the Shinari and you can imagine a thoroughbred racehorse at full tilt or a cheetah about to pounce on its prey. While many of Mazda’s previous concept models have been ‘dream cars’ that had no chance of ever reaching production, that’s not the case here.
Shinari is a four-door, four-seat sports coupe that’s pretty close to becoming reality, albeit not in the short term. Its distinctive front fenders have evolved from those introduced in the RX-8 and emphasise the front wheels while all of the car’s surfaces appear to be constantly transforming – there’s no static

shape so the car looks to be in perpetual motion. For the headlights, the designers created a structure with no outer lens, exposing the deep-set lamps that imitate the eyes of a wild animal stalking its prey, and for the body colour a luminous metallic blue was chosen to convey an image of hard metal. Inside, the cockpit surrounds the driver while the availability of smaller electronic components has allowed for a floating three-dimensional display offering distinct modes for Business, Pleasure and Sport. Looking further ahead, the studios have been exploring themes that may sound fanciful at present – like chameleon paint that changes colour and a ‘solar skin’ that heats the car in winter and keeps the battery charged – but that could one day become commonplace. Peter Birtwhistle, once of Porsche
and Audi and for many years Mazda’s head of design in Europe, can see huge changes to come in the next 20 years. He says: “New lighter-weight materials will be much more prevalent and the whole way that a car is constructed is going to change greatly. Advances in materials – particularly plastics – will see complex parts and systems simplified and eliminated. “For example, wheels and tyres may become one single unit and the entertainment systems in cars will be much more linked to the mobile devices the owner has with him. All this will mean greater weight and energy savings.” As for Mazda, Ikuo Maeda is confident of his mission. “My goal is to create a brand presence that car lovers around the world recognise as representing both Mazda and Japanese originality. Future Mazdas will move people.”

HEN a SEAT model has the initials FR, for Formula Racing, after the name it can mean only one thing – a generous helping of that trademark auto emocion. Serve up some hot hatch performance with low emissions and outstanding fuel figures and you are onto a winner. That’s the case with the SEAT Ibiza TDI CR, a stylish supermini with lots of torque, positive handling and a turbodiesel engine that’s audible but not instrusive. The FR, along with stablemates the Cupra and Cupra Bocanegra, sits at the head of the Ibiza range with a more edgy design, extra equipment and some serious punch. And in the case of the FR TDI CR – the latter bit means Common Rail – you have not only the most potent Ibiza diesel ever to sport the FR badge, but also the most powerful

oil-burner in its segment. Acceleration to 62mph takes just 8.2 seconds from an engine boasting 143bhp, yet its low emissions of 123g/km are, insists SEAT, unique for a car of this nature. Then there’s the fuel figure of an average 60.1mpg. It sounds unrealistic, and in everyday driving conditions it probably is, but lop a few miles per gallon off and you’re still getting terrific economy. Unlike petrol versions the Ibiza FR TDI CR comes in a choice of sporty SC or more practical five-door body styles, and both have
design features that set them apart from the rest of the range. Touches like a honeycomb grille, specific bumpers, silver door mirrors, 17-inch wheels and twin exhaust pipes all hint at the power beneath the bonnet. Move inside and it’s a similar story – a stiple effect dash with piano black highlights around the sound system and air-con console, while the FR badge adorns the gearknob and is embossed on the front seat backrests. The build feels solid and sound-proofing very effective, something aided by the common rail system which helps lower engine noise, especially at high speed. For practicality, the tested five-door model is the one to go for. It has ample space up front and plenty of stowage options like three cupholders, glovebox, door bins, a couple of coin containers and flaps

Kia’s first edition for petrolheads THERE’S a treat in store for fans of the latest Kia Sportage mid-range SUV, for the British arm of the company has managed to secure another 300 examples of the new model in advance of its scheduled UK launch. Kia originally announced that
the stylish newcomer would not be available in right hand drive until November, but last month revealed that it had been able to secure 850 rhd examples which were being made available as the Sportage First Edition . Problem was, they only came with the company’s 2.0-litre
diesel engine and some punters were insistent on a petrol alternative. Now, Kia says that to satisfy that demand additional factory production has been secured for 300 petrol engined versions of the new crossover. The Sportage First Edition 2.0
AWD is powered by a 2.0-litre petrol engine and comes with a five-speed manual transmission delivering 161bhp @ 5,200rpm. The vehicle has a top speed of 113mph, accelerates from rest to 60mph in 10.3 seconds and achieves a combined cycle fuel consumption of 35.8 mpg. CO2
