HE puncture-proof people mover is on the way as SEAT launches an all-new seven seat Alhambra. Fitted with self-sealing tyres as standard the latest Alhambra will carry on SEAT’s tradition of value for money motoring. Although pricing has still to be confirmed by the Spanish car maker its new flagship is likely to cost from around £21,000 when it goes on sale in November. Targeting the likes of Ford’s Galaxy and S-Max models, SEAT is hoping to win extra business from fleet operators with its newcomer. The original Alhambra, launched in 1996, became a firm family favourite as a practical all-rounder. The new model is designed to be even more user-friendly but with low emission diesel engines in the line-up it has added appeal for business users. Fitted with a 140bhp 2.0-litre diesel the Alhambra – like its sister model the VW Sharan - has the lowest CO2 emissions of any seven seater on the market. The engine is rated at 143g/km and even when boosted to 170bhp in higher specification versions it still comes in below the 160g/km threshold at 154g/km. Both can average more than 50 miles per gallon and can be had either with six speed manual transmissions or semi-automatic DSG gearboxes. So can the only petrol engine in the new Alhambra range which is the 1.4-litre TSI originally developed by SEAT’s parent company VW and already used in the Golf and Polo hatches as well as others in the VW Group. It uses turbo and supercharging to pump out 150bhp and even in a car the size of the Alhambra the 1.4 engine can deliver enough performance to produce consistent driving under all conditions. Top speed from the 1.4 is a claimed 123mph with 0-60 acceleration of 10.7 seconds while average fuel consumption is in the region of 40mpg. Although emissions at

167g/km are higher than the diesels it is this version of the Alhambra which is likely to make up the bulk of private sales. On the road the 1.4 is something of a surprise when it comes to acceleration – although it has to be worked fairly hard uphill or when the vehicle is laden. The diesels offer more mid-range pull but in any guise the Alhambra is not unduly noisy and handles in a composed and stable fashion. The
ride in any part of the vehicle is much improved compared to the original. Three trim levels will be available with the top specification diesel models costing closer to £30,000. All Alhambras will be fitted with stop/start systems to improve fuel efficiency in traffic and all have electronic stability controls as wells as airbags to protect all three rows of occupants. The car is slightly longer and
wider than the outgoing model and there is now enough space inside for adults to sit in the back seats which on the previous car were only really big enough for children. Sliding side doors are another convenient feature and all passenger seats can be folded flat with only one hand. The outer two middle seats also have seat cushions which can be raised by a lever, converting them into child seats. SEAT has paid plenty of attention

The self sealing tyres are supplied by Continental and use a compound inside the rubber to seal punctures up to a diameter of five millimetres – enough to cope with a nail or screw in the tread – which, according to Continental, make up 85 per cent of all punctures.
