THE Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents has welcomed news that there has been a fall in drink-drive deaths. Provisional statistics on accidents reported to the police involving drinking and driving in Britain in 2009, published by the Department for Transport, show that fatalities have fallen by five per cent to 380, from 400 in 2008. It is the first time drink-drive fatalities have fallen below 400 a year. Kevin Clinton, head of road safety at RoSPA, said: “This reduction in casualty figures is very encouraging, and we are pleased that the message that driving while under the influence of alcohol is dangerous and irresponsible seems to be getting through.”
HISTORICS ● at Brooklands is
offering a recreation of a Ferrari 250 GTO widely regarded as the greatest Ferrari of all time - for auction on September 25, at a fraction of the cost of the real racer. With the most recent high-profile sale of an original 250 GTO setting BBC Radio DJ Chris Evans back a reputed £12m, the 1965 Ferrari 250 GTO Evocazione offered for sale by Historics, is expected to fetch a hammer price in the region of £240,000. The car was purpose-built to create an authentic copy of the only right hand drive 4.0-litre five-speed 250 GTO, built by Ferrari to compete at Le Mans.

HEN it comes to style Kia’s design chief Peter Schreyer knows a thing
or two. After all, it was Schreyer who gave us the super-sleek Audi TT before being headhunted by the ambitious Korean car maker four years ago. Since then he has been gently stamping his mark on Kia’s rapidly improving range but not until now have we seen exactly what Schreyer’s been up to. The latest Sportage is the first all-Schreyer Kia and it’s a design which is as breathtaking as it is functional. This super-looking SUV is about to shoot Kia into the major league. The new Sportage is a solid, capable, very comfortable, ultra-modern family all-rounder with an emphasis on quality. When the Sportage hits the market in November it will be priced from just under £17,000
by CHRIS RUSSON but to whet appetites a limited number of special models will be on sale in the next few weeks priced from £20,777. Fully kitted and in some startling paint jobs such as bright orange, the few hundred First Edition Sportages are set to become exclusive items. They will also serve as rather effective mobile billboards for Kia’s new standards. Realistically, all that is missing from the Sportage First Edition is factory-fitted sat nav – something the Koreans appear to consider is non-essential in these days of portables. Heated seats, not just in the front but in the back as well, dual zone air conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth and iPod connections and trip computer are all standard fit. So is leather upholstery with fine stitching and there are electric windows all round. A neat touch is
extendable sun visors which are designed to eliminate gaps when folded out to block glare from the side. The cabin is roomy for five and the seats comfortable and supportive. If there is a weak point it’s with the facia which although smartly styled is still obviously plastic. The First Edition is powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine mated to a six-speed manual box. Autos are available at £22,077 and the only option on the 850 specials is metallic paint at £435. On the road the Sportage
drives well. Eventually the car will be built at Kia’s European factory in Slovenia and final tuning for the suspension took place in the UK. It’s the nicest ride so far from any Kia and despite its size there is limited roll when cornering. Noise levels are good as well. There’s a gear shift indicator incorporated in the instrument panel and although the shift up points seem to come early the engine is torquey enough to make do. That said, Kia is claiming 47.1mpg on average but on a

run I managed low 40s. Emissions are 156g/km which means it costs £155 to tax in the first year. Top speed from the 134bhp engine is a claimed 112mph and 0-60 acceleration is 10.9 seconds. So with plenty of pull from low revs the performance is more than adequate. It can also tow a two-ton braked trailer. The First Edition features an automatic all-wheel-drive system developed by Magna in Austria, traction control and electronic devices to assist descents and climbs in tough conditions. The new Sportage is a remarkable car for Kia – it has the feel, the power and above all the looks to make it very desirable in First Edition trim. Come November the full range will include front-wheel-drive only models, 1.6 petrol and 1.7-litre diesel engines featuring stop/start technology. Pricing has still to be confirmed.

Motors PEUGEOT has unveiled a series of special offers in time for the new 60 plate next month – and they could prove a Godsend for young drivers. Among them is the French manufacturer’s ‘Just Add Fuel’ programme, geared towards first time new car owners. It works via a single monthly payment that covers all the major motoring costs like comprehensive motor insurance, road fund licence, vehicle servicing, roadside assistance and warranty in a three year finance package. Peugeot’s trawl through various internet websites reveals that a 21-year-old, first-time driver in a new Peugeot 107 will pay on average £235 a month in London, £259 in Birmingham and £433 in Manchester just for insurance. Under the Just Add Fuel programme a 21 year-old can get behind the wheel of a new Peugeot 107 Millesim for £197, which is less than the cost they would pay for insurance alone.

A
NEW engine range, fresh styling and prices from £17,585 are features of the next generation Volkswagen Touran, which goes on sale in late September. The German company has just opened its order book for the compact MPV, initially unveiled at the Leipzig Motor Show during the spring. Drawing on the same design seen on the Polo supermini and latest Sharan people carrier, the Touran boasts a lower, wider appearance than the model it replaces. And the changes extend to the front wings, bonnet and front bumper which are joined by new wing mirrors, rear lights and a restyled tailgate and bumper. Inside, the entertainment and climate functions have all been revised and a new three-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of new-look dials. As with the outgoing car, the new Touran’s focus is on versatility, with the ability to carry seven adults with the third row of seats folding flat into the floor. Buyers also get air-con, alloy wheels, roof rails, a CD stereo system, ABS, Electronic Stabilisation Programme and six airbags fitted as standard. A five-seat option is also available. The second generation of Park Assist, a system extended to the new Sharan, not only needs less space to perform parallel parking manoeuvres, but also allows the car

regeneration, the same unit can return 47.9mpg while the emissions drop to 139g/km. A further petrol and four diesel engines will be available, ranging in power from 90 to 170PS, along with
three trim levels – S, SE and Sport – and BlueMotion variants offered with each. Prices range from £17,585 for the Touran TSI 1.2 S model rising to £25,535 for the 2.0 TDI Sport.

winner. That’s a philosophy Nissan has stuck by for years, and the Japanese company has never been afraid to make the radical decisions either. Like scrapping the popular Primera and smaller Almera models to make way for a crossover car in the shape of the oddly-named Qashqai. In the three years since the Qashqai has been built at the Nissan factory in Sunderland it has become a massive success – more than 200,000 rolled off the production line last year. And the reason is simple. It’s what people want – a smart blend of family hatchback with the confident feel and rugged style of an SUV. The second generation Qashqai

was launched during the spring and the good news is that while all its predecessor’s qualities are retained and some more sophisticated features introduced, this car has a more upmarket feel overall. From the fit and finish of the panels to the construction of the seats, this is a car that really warrants premium status. True, the tested model was in top spec Tekna trim, but I couldn’t have been more impressed with the quality, feel, comfort and sound insulation. The Qashqai+2 badge means
there’s seating for seven in a model that’s both taller and longer than a standard five-seater. Life on board is pretty much faultless for five, with ample head and legroom all round and plenty of stowage thanks to the likes of a deep central box, cup holders, coin container, racks behind the front seats, door bins and glovebox. The rear seats are also versatile – they split, fold and also slide forward or back – while the third row seats lift up or drop down at the light pull of a tab. But access to the +2’s pair of individual back seats is not only tricky, they are also only suitable for kids due to the lack of legroom and raised floor level. And there’s an impact on other passengers as well because if there’s a tall driver behind the wheel, who needs the front seat slid fully back, then there’s barely enough legroom for anyone

The chance comes courtesy of the Help for Heroes Rally, which will be seeking fresh recruits at this year’s LANDROVERmax! at Stoneleigh Park,
Warwickshire, from August 28-30 - for its next event in 2011. Earlier this year 45 four-wheel drive vehicles took part in the initial 10-day, 2000-mile journey, which mixes travelling with military history, and those taking part raised £110,000 for the Help for Heroes charity.
Next year’s adventure, which starts at Salisbury Plain on June 18, takes in French, Belgian, Dutch and German military sites and mixes fast road routes with off-roading, treasure hunts and challenges that demand mental agility. Tulip notes, issued twice a day,
guide participants to their next destination and the rally is aimed at whole families, not just off-road enthusiasts or military historians. Among the sites visited are those of the September 1944’s Operation Market Garden and the Battle of the Bulge, which

began in December 1944. Land Rover Max is open from 9am-5.30pm and day tickets are available £10 for adults in advance. Children go free. Land Rover is also hoping to offer passenger rides on the off road course in exchange for donations to the charity.
