VANMAN is going green with the introduction of Britain’s most eco-friendly van. Ford is using its ECOnetic technology to produce lean and mean versions of the Fiesta and Transit vans. The Fiesta will be the first van in the UK capable of breaking the 100g/km CO2 emissions barrier. It is rated at 98g/km while the larger Transit will be ‘best in class’ at 189g/km. The Fiesta van uses a specially calibrated Duratorq 1.6-litre TDCi diesel engine which will average a claimed 76.4mpg. Ford claims that will save the average user up to 35 gallons of fuel a year. The Transit ECOnetic is based on the 280 short wheelbase van and is powered by a 2.2-litre 115PS Duratorq TDCi engine offering economy of 39.2mpg. Both models have more aerodynamic bodies to reduce drag, longer ratio gearboxes and are fitted with low rolling resistance tyres. The eco vans will be on sale in the summer and prices will be announced later.
A CHEAPER ● version of the Renault Megane hatchback is being introduced in June priced from £13,250. The Megane Extreme will be some £500 cheaper than the current entry level Expression model. It will compete with the likes of the Ford Focus Studio and the new VW Golf S. It will be powered either by a 1.6 100bhp petrol engine or a 1.5 diesel with 86bhp.

ALK about the bucking the trend. Vauxhall’s new Vectra replacement the Insignia is 2009 European Car of the Year for good reason. While other manufacturers have suffered a downward sales trend, Vauxhall took more than 15,000 orders in the first month of the car hitting UK showrooms. Now the volume manufacturer is hoping the graceful Sports Tourer – third significant body style in the Insignia line-up following the hatch and saloon – will enjoy similar success. This model is elegance on wheels with its dramatically tapered roofline, curved tailgate and roof rails – and fortunately for customers the looks are more than just skin deep. Even with the rear seats in place there is a spacious 540-litre load area and with them lowered there’s a warehouse degree of space, a vast 1,530-litres to be precise. You even get an underfloor
by MIKE TORPEY storage area while powered tailgates are standard on SE and Elite models to make loading simpler. Coinciding with the Sports Tourer’s launch is the introduction of the sixth engine to the Insignia range, the 180PS 1.6 Turbo. Available with all trim levels on front-wheel-drive models, the new petrol engine emphasises Vauxhall’s increasing commitment to smaller capacity turbocharged units, which provide sharp performance combined with reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The 1.6-litre Turbo SRi boasts 40bhp more than the 1.8-litre model yet is more economical and has lower CO2 levels. This model joins the 1.8, 2.0T and 2.8T V6 in the Insignia’s petrol engine range, with the 2.0 CDTi 130PS and 160PS diesels also carrying across to the Sports Tourer. All engines meet the latest
Euro 5 emissions standards. As with the saloon and hatch the innovative FlexRide system is available which give drivers with a choice of three settings – Standard, Tour and Sport - depending upon their driving style and the conditions at the time. There’s also a choice of two chassis – Sport, which is standard on all SRi models, and Comfort, which is standard on S, Exclusiv, SE and Elite models. Vauxhall expects the 2.0-litre CDTi to be the best selling engine and its punchy
power delivery will satisfy most drivers while giving the benefit of an average fuel consumption of 47.1mpg. This model will hit 60mph in 9.3 seconds and go on to a top speed of 132mph. Drivers less concerned about consumption may go for the 2.0i 16-valve turbocharged petrol engine which will reach 60mph in just 7.5 seconds and has a top speed of 147mph. And for serious there will be a VXR version of the Sports Tourer available in the autumn boasting 325bhp. “Buyers in the mid-size

estate market are craving more practicality than ever before to cater for families and lifestyle activities,” said Vauxhall marjeting director Andy Gilson. “But they are not content to to compromise on style and running costs, which is why the Insignia Sports Tourer is such an ideal choice in this growing sector.” The UK has traditionally been a strong market for estate cars, which is why Vauxhall is predicting that more than 15% of all Insignia sales will be Sports Tourer models. Like the hatch and saloon, most buyers are expected to opt for the SRi model, with SE and Elite also accounting for a large proportion of sales. Prices start at £18,450 for the 1.8i model in entry level Exclusiv trim while the 1.6i Turbo costs £1,000 more. The CDTi diesels start at £19,950 with a £500 premium for the higher powered 160PS version, and the range-topping Insignia Sports Tourer 2.8 V6 Turbo Elite 4x4 is £31,170.

Bigger, better and cheaper
ENAULT, like all motor manufacturers, is going through a tough time during this unprecedented financial
crisis. But companies like Renault can’t just stand still. They have to continue to up-grade their line-up of vehicles and hope for better times ahead. So, after investing around £250 million on developing a new Grand Scenic MPV, Renault will be pinning its hopes on economic recovery by keeping ahead of the opposition and taking a share of what cash is still around. The latest model, which goes on sale in the UK on May 15, is bigger than the outgoing model, has a new engine line-up and for the first time offers automatic transmission. In the style stakes Renault has made a good job of giving the newcomer a more car-like shape. Its designers have given the Grand Scenic a smoother, sleeker look. The front end has distinctive wraparound light clusters and fog lights with satin trim detail plus an aggressive front grille. The sloping roofline leads to a boomerang-shaped rear light cluster. The front window is larger than before and the windscreen pillars slimmer – giving the driver a better view, especially at roundabouts.

The Grand Scenic’s interior has also had a major makeover. The dashboard is uncluttered and the centre console slides front to back to reveal or conceal additional control buttons. There are no fewer than 40 separate stowage spaces inside the new car and with both second and third rows of seats folded it offers a huge amount of space.

When it goes on sale in the UK there will be 20 versions across four trim levels: Extreme, Expression, Dynamique and Privilege. Seven engines will be available at launch – three petrol and four diesel. I tried the 1.5 dCi 106 diesel and despite the Grand Scenic’s size it was up to the job. I was also impressed by the

quietness of the motor on the road with very little road, wind or engine noise. Handling was also pretty good with good cornering feel with just a little body roll on tight, fast bends. I was less impressed with the gear-change for the six-speed manual which I found a bit notchy. I also drove the new 1.4 TCe 130 bhp petrol-powered Grand Scenic.

Considering its small size it felt as if I had a larger engine. Acceleration is pin sharp and Renault claim you could get as much as 40 mpg out of it on a combined run. Pricing sees the range cost from £14,995 to £23,695 with the entry-level Extreme 1.6 VVT 110 costing over £1,000 less than today’s equivalent model.

GREEN INTO BLUE: Volkswagen’s CO2-efficient Passat BlueMotion
T
RANSFORMING green into blue has proved a massive hit for Volkswagen. BlueMotion is the named the German giant has put aside for the most fuel and CO2 efficient model in each of its passenger car ranges. So far that tally has hit nine models – and indication of the strength of VW’s coverage of the automotive market. And how about this. The clamour from buyers to lay their hands on the first VW to turn blue, the Polo, was such that production at the Pamplona factory where the cars are built had to be trebled. Not surprisingly, all BlueMotion models have diesel engines using ‘Pumpe Duse’ or unit injector technology. But there are several ways in which these cars vary from standard versions. Take the powerplants for instance. They also feature a Diesel Particulate Filter which reduces

oxides of nitrogen and carbon particles almost to zero, while a variable geometry turbocharger is also added to provide high levels of torque from just above idling speed. Then the car’s five-speed manual gearbox is modified to lengthen the gearing, which decreases engine speed and also improves economy. Add some simple aerodynamic changes like altering the front and rear spoilers, modifying the cooling system intakes, lowering the suspension and using low rolling resistance tyres and bingo, you have BlueMotion.
In the case of the family-sized Passat saloon the result is an average fuel consumption figure of 55.4 miles per gallon from the 105PS 1.9-litre engine and a CO2 figure of 136g/km. But whereas you might expect the cost of going green, or should I say blue, to command a hefty premium, that’s not the case. The Passat BlueMotion’s price is actually only £300 more than the similarly specified S model, yet owners will get five miles per gallon better economy and appreciably lower emissions – 136 as opposed to 151g/km, although the VED saving is only £25. Otherwise, the car is classic Volkswagen – very Germanic with tough and durable if fairly drab interior, a sensible instrument layout and adequate passenger space front and back, though the rear centre position is less than perfect. Citroen breaks new ground with four-seater C1 electric car A MODIFIED Citroen C1 has become the first four-seat electric car to go on sale in Britain. Priced from £16,850 the C1 ev’ie has a range of between 60 and 70 miles and has been developed by the Bedfordshire-based Electric Car Corporation. The C1 ev’ie can be fully charged in
around six hours from a domestic 13 amp socket at a cost of around 90p and has a top speed of 60mph. ECC expects to produce around 500 C1 ev’ies over the next 12 months, rising to between 2,000 and 4,000 units in 2010, depending on demand and government support. The government has already indicated
it is planning to offer a £5,000 subsidy to buyers of electric vehicles as well as creating an infrastructure of charging points in cities across the country. Xavier Duchemin, managing director of Citroën UK, said: “We are committed to providing greener alternatives for motorists and are delighted to be supplying ECC with C1s for this exciting

project.” David Martell, chief executive, ECC, added: “We believe this is the first serious alternative to a petrol or diesel car. It drives just like a petrol car and has excellent capacity for use in any town or city in the UK.” The Citroën C1 ev’ie is assembled in Britain from a donor car.
