A
S stunts go Peugeot has reached new heights by using its latest 3008 crossover car to launch a glider into the air. Across a bumpy, grass airfield the 3008 managed to tug a 1.5 ton sailplane at sufficient speed to climb to an altitude of 1,500ft – enough for a successful flight. Normally a mechanical winch powered by a 7.2-litre V8 engine developing 340bhp would be needed to pull the glider into the air. The secret behind the 3008’s ability is an advanced electronic traction system which gives a front-wheel drive vehicle almost as much off-road ability as a 4x4. Peugeot calls it Grip Control and it makes the 3008 a crossover with a difference. If ever a car ticked all the boxes then this is it. The 3008 is an SUV, MPV and luxury estate all rolled into one. Moreover it is high tech, can be fitted with a fighter jet style head up display and marks the first of a new generation of Peugeots which feature a stylish and very practical interior. It goes on sale in November and will be priced from £15,995 for a 1.6-litre petrol version to £21,895 for a high performance diesel automatic. All models in the three trim line-up are fitted with air conditioning and electronic stability controls and each has plenty of cargo space ranging from 512 to 1,604 litres. A split opening tailgate adds to its practicality and the boot floor can be set in a variety of positions to divide the luggage area if required. The newcomer is part of the Peugeot 308 range and fits into the line-up between the hatch and SW estate models. Although wider and taller than the other variants it is five inches shorter than the SW but three inches longer than the hatch. Two petrol and three diesel engines will be available with the most economical being a 1.6-litre 110bhp diesel averaging 57.6mpg with CO2 emissions of 130g/km. The quickest is the 150bhp turbo petrol 1.6 which can manage 0 to 60 in less than nine seconds with average mpg of 38.1 and emissions of 176g/km. For all round performance the diesels are the better bet although all are fitted with a hydraulic ride control system which keeps body roll to a minimum. The 3008 is being pitched against the likes of the Nissan Qashqai, the Ford C-Max and another newcomer to the crossover craze, the Skoda Yeti. The Peugeot is strong on design and looks more conventional than its rivals, with its classy switchgear and a great driving position with a raised centre console creating a cockpit-like feel. Sky’s the limit for Pug’s new 3008 and is combined with a distance alert device which uses radar to enable drivers to keep a safe gap from the vehicle ahead. The display is projected onto a retractable screen behind the instrument panel and shows vehicle speed as well as the safety gap which is measured in seconds. The HUD can be adjusted to make sure the display falls into the driver’s line of sight without being a distraction. A hard disc drive sat nav with Bluetooth connectivity is another option at £1,400 while the Grip Control adds £450. Grip Control works from the car’s
electronic traction system and like Land Rover’s Terrain Response set-up can be configured for a variety of conditions such as mud, snow and sand and even on regular tyres it makes the 3008 highly adaptable – although not a full-blown off-roader. The advantage is it is lighter and more fuel efficient. For the leisure oriented family the 3008 is an ideal vehicle. Peugeot has not catered for such customers before but with this newcomer it’s well placed to make a mark – and as the glider stunt demonstrated this is a car with plenty of surprises.

HE story goes that a young Japanese designer was feeling depressed because his wife was expecting and, being a forward thinker, he knew he would have to buy a sensible car. So he began doodling on a sheet of paper in the hope of sketching a model that would fulfil all his desires. The curvy features of Linda Evangelista didn’t appear however, nor those of Gisele Bundchen. Instead, we are led to believe, his pencil traced the rather less eye-popping form of the Nissan Note. That’s right. A supermini sized MPV with midriff bulge and a double chin. To be fair to the poor lad, it’s odds-on that the more conservative styling studio bosses took control of the project and squeezed him out. Anyway, it was a clever move because the original Note has proved a winner for Nissan thanks to smart packaging, decent economy and an affordable price. And the revamped 2009 version has raised the stakes making this little big car even more desirable. Apart from a new nose and streamlined headlights plus more individual interior trims, the Note has been chosen as the first model to offer a package called Nissan Connect. Of the trim grades, it is standard on Tekna models and a £400 option on Acenta. In fact only buyers of the entry level Visia miss out. Basically it’s a user-friendly communication set-up that features a 5-inch touch screen, sat-nav in nine languages with a traffic message channel, CD player, Bluetooth and MP3 connectivity with steering wheel-mounted controls. In truth I expected the Note to be just another competent but fairly ordinary multi purpose offering.

SMART PACKAGING: The Nissan Note is a terrific family car – and good value to It’s a lot better than that. For starters, the featured 1.5-litre dCi turbodiesel engine may only boast 86PS but it gives the Nissan respectable punch while returning an average fuel figure of 62mpg. Interior space, especially in the back, is first class – more than
enough for three tall teenagers – and there are slots, bins and cubbies all over the show, as well as airline-style trays, 12V power sockets, a sliding rear seat, secret space beneath the front passenger seat cushion, individual reading lights, rear privacy glass, cooled
glovebox and space for more than a dozen drinks cans. So far as family transport goes it’s the real deal and with a cut in prices, the starting point is £9,990 for a 1.4-litre petrol Note Visia. Perfection hasn’t been achieved however. It may have been a clever
idea to provide a flexi-board system that splits the load area in two, sensibly reversible with a carpeted side and waterproof side, but the boot is too small. That though is the only criticism I can fire at the Note. It’s a terrific family car – and good value too.
