OOL-looking concept the FlextTreme has been hailed as the clearest indication yet of Vauxhall’s intention to be a producer of very stylish but practical cars. General Motors’ European design chief Mark Adams, speaking at the Geneva Motor Show this week, said that future Vauxhalls will be cars people will be proud to buy. The American-owned giant has announced it will triple its investment and has committed 1.9 billion euros for the so-called GM Europe viability plan. And Adams says he wants to show that electric vehicles do not have to be boring but can, with the technology developed by GM, be both environmentally friendly and enjoyably dynamic. The FlexTreme can run just on its battery for around 30 miles or, with a small internal combustion engine replenishing the battery, expect a range 10 times as far. "FlexTreme will never go into production on its own but shows you do not have to use the EV technology in a conventional car but have something sporting," said Adams. "We have styling elements on FlexTreme which you will see in future Vauxhall and Opel models very soon, such as the new face. "It gives a glimpse over the horizon of what is coming from GM in terms of design expressions. A stylish car is a compromise and with the Flextreme we wanted to show how practical a design could be as well." He added: "We are really making an aspirational car which shows electric vehicles aren't just smooth, rounded shapes, which can be boring, but can be a car which makes people proud to own and that the company is moving forward." Meanwhile, the company also chose Geneva to announce plans to build a generation of new cars which do not burn fossil fuels. The vision was laid out by Nick O’Reilly, the company’s European chief executive, at the Geneva Motor Show. O’Reilly, who drove a prototype

Vauxhall Ampera 500 miles to Geneva from the company’s European headquarters in Germany, said that the long term plan was to develop a family of cars which did not rely on petrol or diesel. He said electric cars would be for everyday commuting, extended
range models would be for long distances while fuel cell cars which burn hydrogen would appeal to drivers who wanted more performance. At the moment the Ampera uses a small petrol engine to generate electricity which is used to drive the car. Overall it produces only a
fraction of the tailpipe emissions of a conventional engine and has a range of 350 miles. The Ampera is described as an extended range electric vehicle and eventually it could use fuels such as bio-ethanol to power its engine instead of petrol. Bio-ethanol can be produced from
products such as wood pulp or any organic waste unlike oil-based fuels which drain the planet’s natural resources. The Ampera can run for almost 40 miles purely on battery power where it produces no emissions. The high tech car is likely to go into production next year.

VAUX POP: The Insignia, especially in SRi 4x4 guise, ticks all the boxes in which the Vectra failed to score

IUGARIO and Bertone are names usually associated with exotic car design. The Italian stylists are synonymous with motoring style and panache. They are not names normally associated with Vauxhall, although the company has used Bertone, notably with its Astra coupe. But you could be forgiven for thinking the Milanese maestros have been sharpening their pencils when looking at the styling of the Insignia, because it really is that good. A replacement for the Vectra, which itself recovered from early styling problems to become a reliable, if slightly staid, favourite with families and fleets, the Insignia moves up several levels both in terms of looks and quality. It looks like a much more expensive car and even in basic form is a bit of a head turner.

Add the SRI trim and 4x4 capability and you have a serious performance motor on your hands – at an attractive price. It shares much with its predecessor, good engines with decent economy and bucketloads of practicality. But it now has the sporty look both outside and inside. The car has a low, feline look of both grace and power with a streamlined shape and coupe-like styling.
That does come at a cost, however. The sloping shape means that windows are smaller and visibility is lessened while the coupe-like shape also means the car is less roomy in the rear. The rest of interior matches the outside with high quality fixtures and fittings that are both pleasing on the eye and practical. Stowage space is excellent with a massive boot and is even greater with the hatchback version. Instrumentation is clear, concise and easy to use and the quality and build is the best so far. The car is also well equipped, even at entry level, but move up to the SRi test model with its 4x4 capability and it looks a real sporting thoroughbred, with neat 18inch alloys. It performs like one too. The two-litre 220PS engine is extremely lively with impressive performance. It rockets the car to

60mph from a standstill in just over seven seconds. The sport suspension means the car is stable and has plenty of grip, particularly when cornering. This gives a firm, but not uncomfortable ride, as the Vauxhall is a capable cruiser. The interior is well cocooned from the sounds of the outside world with wind and road noise at a minimum while the engine is quiet unless under hard acceleration, when a sweet exhaust

sound kicks in. An excellent driver’s car that is practical, fairly economical and fun to drive, while still cheaper than most of its close rivals. Standard equipment is good and the car, with the extra bells and whistles on the SRi, and all models boast a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating. The Insignia comes in Exclusiv, S, SE, SRi and Elite versions, with prices starting at just over £18,000.
New car sales slump poses threat to used car stock

THE downturn in new car sales over recent years will have a significant effect on the used market this year and beyond, according to leading industry analyst Glass’s Guide. And the main cause for concern among dealers will be a major reduction in the supply of
one- and two-year-old used cars. “It was a situation that was prevalent following the recession of the early 1990s and it will be repeated over the next few years,” says Glass’s chief Adrian Rushmore. “When new car sales remain depressed for a succession of
years the issue becomes more acute, because future used car supply reduces still further.” Dealers will certainly experience more difficulty in sourcing one- and two-year-old cars this year compared with last, as a result of the marked fall in registrations in 2009 and 2008.
“The saving grace is that the supply of three- to five-year-old cars will be fairly constant this year, thanks to new sales of 2.4m in 2007, 2.3m in 2006, and 2.4m in 2005.” adds Rushmore. Used cars up to five years old are the lifeblood of the dealer trade.
