HIGH-FLIER: Audi’s new R8 V10 defies the recession

HE names roll off the tongue like classic winners at a hall of fame ceremony - Aston Martin DB9, Maserati Granturismo S, Porsche Turbo and Jaguar XKR Coupe. And they all have something else, other than supercar status, in common. When it comes to power, acceleration, top speed, power to weight ratio and price, none can touch Audi’s new 10 cylinder version of the aluminium-bodied R8. It’s perfectly reasonable to wonder why the high flying German manufacturer would feel the need to introduce a car like this in the midst of a recession, especially as the original 4.2-litre R8 has barely been around for two years. Well 1,000 potential – and hopeful rather than optimistic – customers have already each paid a £2,000 deposit for a model that will be restricted to 150 a year in the UK.

Awesome Audi is simply G-R8

What the lucky few will be getting at this end of this month is a car of outstanding capability and style. It’s also a rocket ship. Here are a few figures to mull over. The new R8 is powered by a 5.2-litre V10 petrol engine producing a whopping 525PS at 8,000rpm and capable of reaching 62mph in a fleeting 3.9 seconds. There will no doubt be one or two disappointed folk, because the speedo needle won’t quite touch the 200mph mark, stopping fractionally short at 196. But when linked to the R tronic automatic transmission it can reach 124mph in just 12 seconds. Of course with power comes thirst, the six-speed manual car returning a mere 12.5 miles per gallon in urban

conditions and a claimed 19.2 overall. The mid-engine configuration – the huge V10 is mounted longitudinally behind the cockpit – along with Audi’s quattro permanent four-wheel drive and magnetic ride adaptive damping also ensure limpet-like handling. In fact the car’s balance is unaffected by the need to accommodate the extra cylinders, because the extra weight is at the front of the engine, so a near perfect 44/56% weight distribution is achieved. It’s only when you actually get behind the R8’s flat-bottomed steering wheel that you appreciate just how desirable this car is. Plip the throttle and a deep,

almost threatening, burble assaults the eardrum; ease off and the Audi sounds sweet as a lamb. Throw it into a bend and the car remains absolutely planted; potter round the suburbs at 30mph and the R8 cruises smoothly along without a hint of twitchiness. And that’s one of the car’s most endearing qualities. Yes, it looks fantastic and has mountainous punch, yet it’s also a very usable everyday car that its manufacturer claims can even stow two sets of golf clubs behind the seats. As for innovation, the R8 boasts the world’s first all-LED headlamps – so low and high beam settings as well as daytime running lights and indicators have high intensity diodes – and there are also 19-inch

wheels, Nappa leather sports seats, a 465-watt Bang & Olufsen sound system, wider side cooling vents and a new rear diffuser. The interior may be comfortable, user friendly and classy, but for a car that’s predominantly hand built the cabin has too much of that corporate Audi look to it. And if I’m being picky, you might expect the indicator stalks and one or two of the other switches to feel more robust. But then so far as supercars go – and expert predictions are that this one will hold 40% of its value – the R8 V10 is a tempting proposition at £99,575 for the manual and £104,665 for the R tronic. The only problem is going to be getting hold of one.

BRIGHT IDEA: Toyota’s “new car for tomorrow’s low carbon society”, the iQ

T doesn’t require the intellect of a genius to deduce that Toyota’s “new car for tomorrow’s low carbon society”, the iQ, makes a lot of sense. If the Smart car paved the way for micro sized city transport a decade ago, well Toyota has picked up the thread and stretched it. What the Japanese manufacturer has launched is basically the smallest four-seater car in the world, adding to a line-up that already includes compact offerings like the Aygo and Yaris. At less than 10ft in length you wonder how it’s possible to fit a pair of seats in the back. Not only has the Toyota design team managed to fit a quart into a pint pot, but there’s actually reasonable rear room for a couple of kids – provided the driver’s seat doesn’t need sliding fully back. Among the tricks used is the use

of ultra slim seats, a compact heater/air-con unit and a flat underfloor 32-litre petrol tank giving a range of around 435 miles. The iQ’s styling is futuristic if on the cute side, there’s loads of space up front, the fuel return is more than 60 miles per gallon and there’s a decent amount of standard kit. And that extends to the interior quality and design too – an upmarket feel all round with chunky steering wheel, durable seats and a V-shaped centre console that Toyota says was inspired by a Manta Ray but actually looks more

like a Star Wars stormtrooper helmet. There are two models available at present, the iQ and iQ2, both featuring a 67bhp 1.0-litre petrol engine plus the choice of five-speed manual transmission or Toyota’s new Multidrive auto gearbox. The manual version produces just 99g/km of CO2, the first time a four-seat petrol powered car has broken the 100g/km mark. However the tested iQ2 featured Multidrive, a smooth system that eliminates ‘shift shock’ and still returns 60mpg – within 6mpg of the manual iQ. The iQ is an impressive car to drive – different league to the Smart – and ideal for city and urban use with its planted stance, peppy engine and fantastic turning circle. It also gives the impression of being a much larger car. Of course there has to be a downside, and that means storage space that comprises door bins and

cruising comfortably at the speed limit, though it takes a while to get there. In fact the only time it feels unstable is in strong crosswinds. That said, there are advanced technologies like ABS, brake assist and traction control along with nine airbags, including a world-first rear window curtain shield bag.

Audi to ‘keep its foot on the gas’ with the new A5 by MIKE TORPEY WHILE a gloom seems to hover menacingly over several car manufacturers, Audi is pledging to “keep its foot on the gas”. For instance the premium brand is continuing with its global investment of more than 26 million Euros in new product development this year. Their belief is that the mainstay of future continued success is the speed at which they can bring new cars to market. And there have been plenty of those, the number leaping from 15 to 31 models in 10 years. Latest to join the party is this

week’s arrival of the A5 Cabriolet and such is the British craving for wind in the hair motoring that the UK is the second biggest arena for convertibles in Europe. So much so that Audi expect to send a quarter of the new model range’s production to this country. The A5 is a direct replacement for the outgoing A4 Cabriolet, is all new from the ground up and comes with Standard, SE and S line specification priced from £29,795 up to £40,385. And if that entry level figure sounds expensive, which of course it is, then fans of

EXPANSION: The new Audi A5 premium convertibles can take heart from certain facts – like compared to its closest rivals from BMW and Mercedes-Benz (though not Volvo), the A5 costs less, has lower emissions and is quicker off the mark.

The A5 Cabriolet is initially available with a pair of front-wheel drive petrol engines – a 211PS 2.0-litre turbocharged FSI unit and a 3.2 FSI 265PS – plus a 3.0 TDI diesel quattro producing 240PS.

Next month will see a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 S5, at a cool £42,000, added to the range, to be followed by two more diesels (2.0 and 2.7 TDI). What’s certain is that these are attractive cars - if not nearly so striking as the A5 Coupe the red hood on a white body looking especially smart. Of the models available for test the 2.0 petrol proved enjoyable, solid and willing to drive if lacking any real punch and represents better value than the £37,935 3.0 diesel, which is sweet and near silent but isn’t available in Standard trim. All come well equipped though. Endearing features include a

fabric soft top that opens in 15 seconds and closes in 17, at speeds of up to 31mph, while you can also specify an optional acoustic hood that lowers cabin noise close to coupe levels. There’s also a new neck-level heating option for open top driving on cold days, of which there will no doubt be many, and the solar heat-reflecting upholstery will keep the seats cool on those rare days of blistering sunshine. Then there’s the seating and despite Audi’s claim that thanks to its extended wheelbase the A5 Cabrio can transport four adults in comfort, I found it cramped in the back.
