S WORLD leaders met for the Copenhagen climate talks Ford was doing its bit to save the planet by launching its most economical Focus to date. Britain’s top selling car is now fitted with a range of eco friendly devices making it tax free and capable of averaging 74.2 miles per gallon. A stop/start system, energy regeneration and an onboard economy display are all part and parcel of Ford’s new green king. The snag is it costs the best part of £20,000 as a result of a 2.7 per cent price rise affecting almost all Ford models from December 1. Ford says the increases are due to the strength of the pound against the euro but it makes the new Focus significantly more expensive than most other eco models – especially Kia’s stop/start newcomer, the 68mpg cee’d EcoDynamic which costs some £6,000 less. The new Focus ECOnetic stop/start is fitted out in mid-range Zetec trim and at £19,995 is £250 more than the standard car which itself is fairly frugal averaging 62 to the gallon. The high economy ECOnetic is powered by a 1.6-litre diesel engine developing 109bhp. Top speed is a claimed 119mph while 0 to 60 takes less than 11 seconds demonstrating that the extra economy is not at the expense of performance. As with any Focus it is delightfully balanced and comfortable and the stop/start process in traffic is by no means intrusive or unduly noisy. In fact it is one of the better versions of the current crop of on/off engines. The starter motor has been beefed up to cope with the additional use while developments have been made to the alternator to reduce friction and lessen the workload on the engine. To improve fuel consumption further, kinetic energy built up as the car goes along is captured and used to recharge one of the two batteries which power the likes of the air conditioning

Ford puts its focus on better economy or entertainment systems when the engine is off. If the stop/start ‘brain’ senses the batteries need the engine to be running then the system will not engage. It can also be overridden manually at the push of a button. In heavy traffic the benefit is the engine will be off for much of the time without interfering with comfort inside the car. The system works as soon as the car comes to rest, the handbrake applied and neutral selected. As
soon as the clutch is depressed or the power demands become excessive then the engine restarts instantly. While some stop/start systems have been known to be reluctant to operate in certain conditions such as high temperatures where the air conditioning is working hard, the Ford technology seems keen to perform. But that’s not the ECOnetic’s only trick. On the road, the car monitors the
driver’s technique examining gear changes, the smoothness of steering and use of speed. The results are displayed on the instrument panel and highlight areas were improvements can be made. It also praises good eco-driving. To help further a light flashes on the dash when it’s time to change gear and while Ford claims the new Focus can average almost 75 to the gallon with CO2 emissions of 99g/km in the real world it’s likely
to be closer to 55mpg in everyday use. A version of the new Focus ECOnetic without stop/start manages a claimed 70.6mpg and is priced from £19,245 for a lower powered 90bhp model but that misses out on a tax free emission score with a CO2 rating of 104g/km. The newcomers join Ford’s growing line up of low CO2 vehicles which sees the brand now have some 40 models with emissions of 120g/km or less.

F owners of family cars have felt a little left out when it comes to full-blown hi-tech sight and sound systems, then Nissan has come to their rescue. Drivers of the latest n-tec versions of the Qashqai crossover model now benefit from Nissan Connect, an integrated multi-media set-up that includes sat-nav, mobile phone connectivity and the ability to listen to music any way you want. If you happen to be a music lover then the last bit is much the best. As well as a single CD player and radio you can get the full digital experience via iPod, external hard drives, MP3 files held on CDs or via a memory stick. And it doesn’t stop there because tracks on mobile phones or devices that support Bluetooth audio streaming can be played wirelessly via Connect, with on-screen display of the current song.
