MERCEDES Benz of Liverpool is proving to be a real driving force for motorists sourcing cars through the Government backed Motability scheme. The Pall Mall retailer is the top performing Mercedes-Benz retailer in the country for Motability sales so far this year and has already supplied more than 115 cars to disabled drivers eligible for the allowance, which can be used to contract hire or hire purchase a new car. Sales executive Martin Gardner, who is responsible for Motability sales at the dealership, said: “Whilst it’s nice to be selling the units, we are delighted to achieve the first-class supplier standards required by Motability.”
TWO NEW ● engines are set to provide a
best of both worlds boost in power and economy for the Citroen C5. Despite boasting higher output and better economy, they will also give the hatchback and estate range significant reductions in tailpipe emissions to qualify for lower road tax charges. A 1.6-litre petrol motor developed jointly between the French firm and BMW has replaced the previous 2.0-litre unit. Developing 155bhp, it is mated with a six-speed gearbox and delivers 8% more power. The latest 2.0-litre turbodiesel develops 20bhp more than the outgoing 2.0-litre and also takes the place of the 2.2-litre unit.

Exeo stretches out as estate of grace

PANISH car maker SEAT is breaking new ground with the introduction of a medium sized estate car. The Exeo ST is out to rival the likes of the Vauxhall Insignia estate, the Citroen C5 Tourer and even Ford’s Mondeo. While not quite as accommodating with luggage space ranging from 442 litres to 882 litres, the Exeo’s capacity can be stretched to a maximum in excess of 1,300 litres with the rear seats folded and loaded to the roof line. Nevertheless, the latest addition to the Exeo range is competitively priced running from £19,155 for a 2.0-litre diesel in base S trim to £23,555 for a top specification SE Lux with an uprated 170bhp diesel. That’s a £1,000 premium over the saloon version and pitches the estate head on with its rivals. Where the Exeo ST will score is with the amount of standard equipment which includes climate control,
by CHRIS RUSSON Bluetooth phone connectivity, electronic stability and traction controls, electric windows front and rear, a trip computer and MP3 player connections. It is also very well built and the engine – SEAT’s first common rail diesel – is up with the best. The nine model line-up is heavily weighted towards diesel. A 2.0-litre petrol engine is available only in Sport trim with uprated suspension and priced from £21,755. While the 120bhp diesel offers the lowest emissions at 143g/km it is the more potent 170bhp engine which is best suited to the car. Average fuel consumption is close on 50mpg with emissions of 153g/km and the engine has real bite with a 0 to 60 sprint time of 8.6 seconds. A six speed manual gearbox is standard and not only does the car ride and handle impressively it is easy to achieve excellent economy –
in the region of 60mpg – on a run. The SE Lux estate also features leather upholstery and ultra-bright bi-xenon headlamps, so for the money it has more than a touch of class. The Exeo ST is SEAT’s first real estate car – the stretched version of the Altea hatch being more of a compact MPV, although the Toledo of years ago could carry an awful lot of kit. As well as luggage blinds
and handy anchorage points in the boot, the floor mat can also be folded to reveal a plastic floor which is easy to clean. There’s also a 12-volt socket for an onboard cooler or the like. Inside the ST is roomy and comfortable. It is based on the previous generation Audi A4 – which like SEAT is part of the Volkswagen Group – so fixtures and fittings are of high order. Factory fitted sat nav is a £1,700 extra as is a solar panel
in the sunroof at £940 which can be used to run the air conditioning when the engine is off, keeping the interior cool while parked. While the Exeo ST may not look quite as dynamic as other models in the SEAT range it is by no means fuddy duddy – smart at the front and practical with a low opening tailgate at the rear. As medium-sized estates go this is one of the better ones to drive – definitely sporty while still being very family friendly.

ORGET budget airlines for low cost breaks to Europe – Volvo has a new car which can do the job at a fraction of the price. The Swedish manufacturer is introducing a range of super-economical big cars capable of almost 900 miles on a tank of fuel. It brings a host of European cities within range for a price cheaper than a low cost airline ticket – and you get to travel business class. To prove the point, I have driven a new S80 DRIVe saloon from Milan to Volvo’s UK headquarters in Marlow, Bucks, for less than £70 worth of fuel. With two people on board that works out at almost half the price of an easyJet flight from Italy to London. Admittedly the journey took some 18 hours, including the Channel crossing, but even with that factored in it is still a bargain. The trick has been to drop a 1.6-litre diesel engine into the S80 and the even larger V70 estate as part of Volvo’s strategy to lower CO2
by MIKE ALEXANDER emissions. It is the same engine which Volvo has used in its other high economy DRIVe models, including the much smaller C30 coupe which can average more than 70mpg. While it may sound crazy to put such a small engine into the executive sized S80 saloon which weighs the best part of 1.6 tons, the result is impressive. Not only is the new DRIVe model the most economical version of the S80 it is also the cheapest, as prices are from £22,245. Top speed is a claimed 118mph but it is the mid-range power of the 109bhp engine which makes it so acceptable and it can manage 0 to 60mph in 11.7 seconds. With a five speed manual gearbox, aerodynamic tweaks to the bodywork, higher ratio gears and low rolling resistance tyres the S80 DRIVe can average 57.7mpg with CO2 emissions of 129g/km – a 15% improvement over the
2.0-litre diesel version. It is more economical than any of its main rivals from Mercedes, Jaguar, BMW and Audi and costs less in tax for business users – a key market for both the V70 and S80. On the 825 mile drive from Milan the car was driven at normal speeds and according to the onboard computer averaged 57.4mpg – a fraction off the official figure. The average speed was 52mph. The particular car used for the exercise was a high specification S80 SE Premium priced from £24, 250 and fitted with leather upholstery and sat nav. There was also some £4,000 of extras including Volvo’s blind spot warning system. Comfort throughout the journey was excellent despite annoying wind noise from the sunroof – an £850 option – which although closed sounded as if it was not sealed properly. The S80 is a full blown executive express with plenty of room in the rear, a good sized boot at 422 litres and even around town Volvo claims it is capable of 47.9mpg.

HIDDEN GEM: The Subaru Forester has been transformed by the company’s boxer diesel engine

T’S too low to be classed as a typical off-roader and the wrong shape for an estate car, but Subaru’s Forester could just be a hidden gem of the sports utility vehicle scene. This largest model in the Japanese company’s range seems to combine the best of both worlds – plenty of interior space plus a large boot with a raised driving position for better visibility and permanent four-wheel drive. This particular ‘Scooby’ has been around for donkeys’ years and the fact that Forester has never been a name to roll off the tongue is almost certainly because the car has traditionally relied on petrol power. These days though there’s an oil-burning option – and it’s one of the best diesels around. Subaru has waved the flag for its horizontal ‘boxer’ powerplant for more than 40 years and the company’s engineers were

determined to use this format for their first diesel. The result is a compact, lightweight 2.0-litre common rail unit producing 147bp, a maximum speed of 115mph and acceleration to 60 in 10 seconds. And after a road test that took in a variety of roads plus some of the worst weather of the autumn, the claimed economy figure of 44mpg proved bang on the button. It’s is a rewarding car to drive too. Especially noticeable is the lack of vibration, the dynamics are positive, the engine quiet but the
six-speed manual gearbox was a bit notchy. The Forester is obviously no heavy duty mud plugger – it’s all-wheel drive system splits power 50/50 front to rear unless slip is detected – but it copes well with less demanding off-road conditions. In fact the only disappointing aspects are a cheap feel to some of the interior trim and an uncomfortable perch, due to a lift-up container, in the rear centre seating position. The mid-range Forester 2.0D XC is proving the best seller at £23,030 and with its raft of features certainly offers plenty for those unwilling to shell out another £3,465 for the flagship XSn model’s leather upholstery, powered seating, push-button start and sat-nav. Those opting for entry grade Forester 2.0D X can benefit from emissions of 167g/km, which means an annual road fund licence of £170,

operated via steering wheel-mounted buttons but the five-speed manual gearshift is stiff. The sport tourer’s low slung style is elegant if a bit dated, but there’s loads of interior space, a huge boot and the car is pleasant, refined to drive and can return upwards of 45 miles per gallon.
Fiesta time for Ford as supermini smashes the 100,000 barrier

MORE THAN than 100,000 motorists have bought a new Ford Fiesta so far this year. Britain’s most popular family supermini notched up its 100,000th registration in October, the month that saw Ford car sales increase by 10 per cent.
With 16.2 per cent of total sales so far this year, Ford has increased its share of the UK market by 1.3 per cent compared with 2008. Said managing director Nigel Sharp: "Achieving over 100,000 sales this year is a significant milestone for the Fiesta and
we're delighted. The car exemplifies our fresh and exciting product line-up which, together with an outstanding dealer network, has helped to increase our UK market share." The car was the country’s top seller in October – the eighth time it has topped the monthly

sales charts in 2009. The Focus is second to Fiesta for the year and, like Fiesta, increased sales in October 2009 compared with the same month in 2008. Since it was launched in May, the Government's scrappage scheme has created a total of 26,214 sales for the company.
