HARD-UP Britain still has plenty of well-heeled car fans ready to spend big on their dream machines. Some aficionados are even willing to pay massive amounts in order to jump the waiting list for latest supercar models, claims Glass’s Guide. Ferrari’s latest 458 Italia model is due to reach a lucky few customers this summer, but premiums of £25,000 are changing hands as fans vie to be among the first to take delivery of the £170,000 supercar.

BASHED bumpers from 23,000 damaged Ford models were rescued from the rubbish tips last year and turned into parts for new cars as part of a recycling programme. The system is saving one of Ford’s dealers around £15,000 a year in refuse removal costs.

HIBLI, Mistral, Vignale, Spyder – great names from the past which have made Maserati convertibles among the most desirable in the world. Now comes the GranCabrio, a £95,000 V8 super soft top which is a true four seater. Styled by Pininfarina, it’s nothing short of a masterpiece – simply gorgeous with a profile like no other. Sleek and sensuous lines, a wheelbase of almost three meters and with a delightful flick at the tail, the car brings a new dimension to open top driving for the elite. The GranCabrio is part of the new generation of Maseratis – the Quattroporte and the GranTurismo – which have burst on to the scene in the past 18 months causing a renaissance for the famous Italian brand. The cabrio completes the new Maserati line-up and it is powered to inspire true supercar fans. Its 4.7-litre V8 develops 440bhp which can blast the GranCabrio from standstill to 60mph in 5.4 seconds. Top speed is a claimed 175mph and the roar from the exhaust

under acceleration is a dream. The sound is even more satisfying when sports mode is selected on the six-speed auto box which electronically changes baffle settings in the exhaust, increasing the growl. Sharing much of its technology with the cheaper GranTurismo – that one costs from £79,905 – the GranCabrio’s electronics include a beefed-up braking system added to the traction and stability controls that can shave some 25ft off stopping distance. Because it’s a soft top, extra rigidity has been created in the body and suspension. However, the GranCabrio weighs in at almost two tons, making it a relative heavyweight among large convertibles and the stiffened body coupled with low-profile tyres produce an extremely harsh ride on all but the smoothest of surfaces. In this upper echelon of the open top sector there is some very capable machinery including the likes of the Bentley Continental, the Mercedes SL and the Jaguar XKR – all of which are
superior to the Maserati when it comes to ride quality. Yet none compare when it comes to looks and this alone makes the GranCabrio ultra desirable. Anyone around 5ft 8ins tall can fit in the back comfortably. Six footers would find legroom tight but the car is a genuine four-seater. Leather and veneer finishes and sculptured seats are text book Italian sports car traits but the dashboard is let down by cheap-looking switchgear below the full colour navigation display. The multi-layer fabric roof takes less than 30 seconds to fold away electronically while
a high fidelity Bose sound system and the car’s air conditioning adjust automatically when exposed to the elements. Roof down and there is only slight buffeting in the front at cruising speeds but it is decidedly more blustery in the rear. With the roof up the sound insulation is excellent and there is little more wind and road noise in the cockpit than in the metal-topped GranTurismo. The GranCabrio is more of a true Grand Tourer than pure sports car – although boot space is only for a couple of bags. Serious luggage would have to go on the rear seats

and securing straps are available for that very purpose. There is even a bespoke set of luggage which Maserati is offering costing anything from £1,175 to £3,525 for four pieces in full leather finish. Without a doubt the GranCabrio is the automotive place to be seen. It is perfect equipment for the glitterati driving the coastal strip in the south of France on a summer’s day. It will be on sale towards the end of April and most will be decked out at well over £100,000 after extras have been added to the £95,630 list price. The GranCabrio is joining an illustrious lineage of Maserati convertibles and becomes another milestone for the brand as its first production four-seat open top. Such has been their appeal that even Henry Ford II was regularly spotted driving around Detroit in a Spyder in the 1960s, famously saying that it would remain in his parking slot until Ford’s designers created a car which was as good looking. Maserati knows full well the value of crafting beautiful cars and perhaps the GranCabrio is its best yet.

OMETIMES the reaction is exactly the opposite to the one you expected. Take the Peugeot Partner Tepee as an example. I predicted the kids would loathe its boxy profile and decidedly van-like looks. Instead they not only preferred it to any car I have tested in months, Porsche 911 included (well, for the little ones at least), but have beseeched me to buy one. They loved the sliding rear doors, the assortment of hidey holes, the big car feel and the way you can climb in the back and walk through to the front passenger seat. But then it’s not just kids that should find the Partner Tepee so appealing because as far as value for money family vehicles go, this one is up with the best. Yes, it is a compact MPV that’s derived from a van but, to be honest, you would never know it, such is the sophistication of the Partner.

The range comprises three versions – Urban, S, Zenith and Outdoor – and offers a choice of two petrol and three diesel 1.6-litre engines with prices from an attractive £11,795. Topping the list is the tested 110PS HDI oil burner that also comes with a diesel particulate filter and despite being the most powerful of the diesels it actually boasts the lowest CO2 figure at 147g/km. This is a sweet engine – strong, not too noisy and offering plentiful
acceleration while still able to manage 50 miles per gallon when driven carefully. The Tepee’s trump card though is its magnificent interior space and sensible layout. While people carriers are not noted for carrying capacity, at least with all the seats in place, the Peugeot offers a cavernous boot, accessed by a roof-hinged tailgate. And that load area can be boosted further by folding down the rear bench. For those who enjoy a game of hide and seek there are countless cubbies and stowage areas – like the deep flip-top bins beneath the rear floor, the split level glovebox, the well next to the gearshift console and deep portholes under the air vents. Best of all though is an odd-looking contraption called the Zenith multi-purpose roof that comprises just over 80 litres of extra overhead storage including a pair of

Ford reveals big discounts in run-up to new registration plate

SOME of the most popular cars made by Ford are coming with big discounts in the run-up to the next registration plate in March. Prices are being slashed by up to £4,650 in a bid to maintain the company’s leadership of the UK market through what is expected to be another tough
year in the showrooms. From the Ka to the Galaxy, a 10-model line up features in a campaign promising the discounts on orders placed up to the end of March for vehicles registered by the end of June. “We are determined to provide the best possible value,"
says MD Nigel Sharp. Zetec versions account for eight of the money-off cars, with £2,008 off the Fiesta, £4,785 off the Focus, £3,637 off the C-MAX, £3,531 off the Mondeo, £3,971 off the S-MAX and £4,650 off the Galaxy. Under the terms of the

Government scrappage incentive the special-offer Fords are also subject to an additional discount of £2,000. Discounts of £1,600 and £1,400 are on offer with the Ka Zetec and Ka Studio models – but every deal in the campaign has to be financed by Ford Credit.
