THE Volvo XC60 crossover SUV has been declared Towcar of the Year 2009. The 4x4 XC60 D5 SE Geartronic model took top honours in this year’s event, run by What Car? and Practical Caravan magazines and The Camping and Caravanning Club. A record number of 39 entries were judged and there were half a dozen categories according to vehicle size and price. Category winners included the Volkswagen Golf 2.0 TDI, Ford Kuga 2.0 TDCi, Skoda Superb 2.0 TDI 170 4x4, Ford S-Max 2.2 TDCi, Volvo XC60 and in the Money No Object category the winner was the Jaguar XF 3.0 Diesel S.
FORD has ● introduced a new automatic
option for its latest Fiesta models, which about 10% of all Fiesta customers will choose. The new Durashift transmission system is mated to the 1.4-litre 95bhp petrol engine and because the latest Fiesta is 40kg lighter than the model it replaced, performance and economy are affected very little. Nonetheless, the 0-60mph acceleration time is a leisurely 14 seconds whilst economy is 43mpg and the CO2 rating is 154g/km. Ford says that the new 1.4-litre automatic completes the Fiesta line-up and is offered with a choice of Style+, Zetec and Titanium trim and equipment levels. Prices start at £13,195 for the Fiesta 1.4 Style+ with automatic transmission.

Prius brings hybrid power to masses

OYOTA has been researching and developing hybrid drive systems for more than three decades and is the leader in the field, accounting for 80% of global hybrid sales. Its petrol-electric Prius, first launched in 1994, was the first dual-fuel motor to really catch the imagination of buyers looking for a more environmentally friendly machine. It promised lower fuel costs, less damaging CO2 emissions but at the same time giving owners a car which was practical and good looking. Prius then was very much a niche car, bought by film stars, politicians and public figures who wanted to be seen to be green. The third generation of the Prius will be available in the UK in August, and Toyota says the newcomer isn’t to be regarded purely as a tree-hugger’s choice, the Japanese company believes the Prius is now in the

The new Prius, powered by the hybrid synergy drive, has had its power increased by a margin of 24% up to 134 bhp. CO2 emissions have been cut by 14% to 89g/km, which means there’s no road tax to paye. Overall fuel economy has been improved by 10%, despite the fact that the Prius now has a larger 1.8-litre engine in place of the 1.5-litre unit on Prius 2. According to Toyota this means you can expect a return of 72.4 mpg on an average run, though around 65 mpg is a more realistic figure – nonetheless is exceptional for a petrol engined car. The new Prius has three “on demand” drive modes. EV mode uses the electric motor only, from start-up and at speeds less than 44 mph. At the push of a button drivers can opt for this system around
town, but the range is just over a mile. In ECO mode throttle response to aggressive acceleration is reduced and air conditioning control is adjusted to support better fuel economy. Toyota says this mode can help drivers cut fuel consumption by 10 to 15%. There is a monitor on the dashboard showing how much power you are using. Power mode boosts power to improve acceleration and give a sportier drive, but obviously increases fuel consumption.
Top speed of the new Prius is claimed at 112 mph with a 0-62 mph sprint time of 10.4 seconds. With such a range of power systems you might think the changes from one to the other would be noticeable but the switchovers are seamless and smooth. Styling of the new Prius is impressive. It has sweeping lines and low wind resistance, but is a heavy motor and not so nimble as conventional cars of a similar size. The Prius’s cabin is very comfortable and spacious.
ECONOMY DRIVE: The third generation Toyota Prius
Boot space has increase by 30 litres over the previous model. With rear seats in position it offers 445 litres and with seats folded down there’s a flat load floor and 1,120 litres of space. Seats are firm but supportive and the layout of the controls is excellent. I particularly liked the head-up display which allows you to look straight ahead while glancing at the speedometer. When the new Prius goes on sale in the UK it will be available in three grades: T3, T4 and T Spirit. Prices remain unchanged for T3 and T Spirit at £18,370 and £21,210. T4 comes in at £19,990. Seven airbags, automatic aircon, front fog lamps and smart entry and start are standard on all models. Options include a new solar sunroof which runs in combination with a remote air conditioning system (a world first). Activated by pressing the A/C button on the key fob it can lower cabin temperature for up to three minutes before the car is occupied.

HE Government may have reined in plans to whack motorists with more severe tax bills while the recession rages, but don’t expect it to
last. In fact the owners of some clean, fuel efficient cars have already been hit – like drivers of the facelifted Peugeot 107 for instance. The baby Pug falls into Band B on the tax scale courtesy of its carbon dioxide emissions being a lowly 106g/km. That should have incurred a bill of just £20, instead there’s a considerable hike up to £35 for this year. Still that’s not bad when you consider that a 3.0-litre Jaguar X-Type Estate, along with every car in the Land Rover Discovery range, is charged £400 a year. The 107 has been around since 2005, so it was well due the revamp that now makes it the French manufacturer’s greenest

and leanest ever car. Built on the same production line as the near identical Citroen C1 and Toyota Aygo, the Peugeot just edges the visual vote over its rivals on exterior styling. Principally that means a new shark-like mouth, which lends a more distinctive appeal, along with wheel trims aimed at helping woo younger drivers. Three trim levels – Urban Life, Urban and Verve – are on offer with prices from £7,695 and all sport the same 1.0-litre three cylinder petrol engine.
This unit only produces 68bhp but you would hardly suspect it from the spirited way the little car performs. It may not be the quickest on the road but it responds well when you rev the lightweight powerpack via its five-speed manual gearbox. And it is also very stable thanks to a ‘wheel at each corner’ design and wide track. Faults seem few and far between and a smart move is to pay the extra £350 for a five-door model rather than the three-door. It looks equally attractive yet guarantees easy rear access rather than fiddling with stiff little adjusters at the base of the front seats. Not surprisingly the boot – accessed by a push-button tailgate panel – is going to be tiny on such a small car, though the rear seats do fold down to expand things. Inside, there’s a fresh, funky feel

The tested model comes in mid-range Urban trim and with a decent level of standard kit, adding the likes of electric front windows, remote central locking, body coloured door handles and mirrors and side airbags to the basic spec, though the Electra Blue metallic paint added an extra £375 to the price.

Skoda’s scouting for sales SKODA has added a new Scout model to its range of Fabia Estate cars. It is based on the Fabia Estate 2 model and comes with a choice of one petrol engine and two diesel options. Visually it differs from the rest of the range with protective body mouldings, 16-inch alloy wheels, silver roof rails and distinctive Scout upholstery. Prices start at £12,815 for the 1.4-litre petrol model, rising to £13,695 for the 80bhp 1.4-litre turbodiesel and £14,380 for the 105bhp 1.9 TDI. The 1.4 TDI boasts economy of 61.4 mpg with 120g/km of CO2 so it falls into VED Band C, which costs £35 to tax. The front-wheel-drive Fabia Scout is equipped with cruise control, electronic stability programme, sunset glass, electric windows, a leather steering wheel, alloy pedals and a front centre armrest. Options include a variable boot floor costing £120 and 17-inch alloys at £300.

Aintree club re-launched

INTREE Circuit Club is back in business – and its re-launch evening got off to a flying start with standing room only at the Park Hotel’s Aintree Suite. Popular names from the club's racing past attended including former British saloon car champions Alan Minshaw – better known as the founder of Wrexham-based Demon Tweeks – and David Yates. Sports car champion Keith Hopwood is also back on board along with veteran race organiser Ian Smith plus Goodwood Festival of Speed clerk Fred Myerscough and club president Graham Hughes. Plans for the future including the running of street based demonstration events on the King's Dock waterfront in Liverpool and also at an as yet un-named town centre, an event that will also feature demonstration and parade runs of historic, classic and contemporary racing, saloon and sports cars. The possibility of circuit racing, which stopped in 1982 when the course was being bought by the Jockey Club, returning to Aintree is also being explored. The club explained that at the time, it was the occasional damage to the

And there are plans to try and restart the popular Tuesday test and track sessions on the club circuit, though obtaining extra dates in Aintree's calendar was more difficult now due to the Aintree golf course built within the motor circuit since racing stopped. The circuit club will also be organising local events that will allow people with normal road cars to compete in low-cost events without the need for any special safety equipment
or special clothing. More people are being encouraged to participate in motorsport at a grass roots level, especially young people who are interested in cars and motorsport and want to be able to compete at minimal cost and in a safe environment. The club's next meeting will again be at the Park Hotel, Netherton, July 14 (7.30pm) and anyone with an interest in cars, motorcycles or any aspect of motorsport is welcome to attend.
