ONE of the UK’s most affordable 4x4s has been given a makeover and gets some extra kit at no additional charge. The Suzuki Jimny, which has push-button selectable four wheel drive, has a revised interior and exterior plus new 15-inch alloy wheels, darkened rear windows, upgraded part leather upholstery and two-tone black and silver roof rails. The Jimny SZ4 costs £10,990 inclusive of metallic paint and also comes in a choice of four pearl colours. Mechanically unchanged, there is a 1.3-litre petrol engine giving 40mpg economy and 171g/km emissions.
A new ● entry-level MINI has been
introduced with the lowest-ever price tag of £10,950. Called the MINI First, it has the same 1.4-litre petrol engine as the MINI One but power is reduced from 90bhp to 75bhp although it retains the six-speed manual transmission. It also has fuel-saving devices such as stop/start, brake energy regeneration and shift display, which collectively help to attain average economy of 53mpg and a low CO2 figure of 128g/km. Despite this the MINI First can nip to 60mph in about 13 seconds and has a top speed of 110mph. The £390 Salt Pack adds floor mats, front fogs and a trip computer. Design Pack costs £525 and adds a three-spoke steering wheel, heated washer jets, colour-coded door mirrors and chrome interior and exterior detailing.

HEN it comes to building cars of the finest quality, there’s attention to detail and then there’s Bentley. It takes 11 hides – imported from parts of Scandinavia where the environment is insect-free and there are no barbed wire fences to damage the leather – to make a set of upholstery for one car. Everything is then double stitched by hand using two needles simultaneously and even a single steering wheel takes eight hours to trim. And the cars’ veneers are made from wood hewn from the boles of 70-year-old trees, then boiled for five days to make them supple. Just sitting in a Bentley evokes a sense of occasion – all the better when that model is the trendy Continental GTC convertible. The prestige marque more often name-checked by the rich and famous may once have been former stablemate Rolls-Royce, but Bentley’s the brand to have really flourished in recent times, gaining a cool, sexy image with the advent of footballers’ favourite the Continental GT. When it comes to open-top
Sophisticated, cool, and frighteningly fast – Mike Torpey has a taste of the Bentley experience motoring, cruising along in the GTC is as good as it gets. Whereas its coupe cousin doesn’t appeal to everyone, the 2+2 convertible is the most distinctive and beguiling car Bentley has produced. What a sound it makes too. You would expect a booming like a demon awakening from the earth’s depths when there’s a W12 twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre engine under the bonnet. But it’s only when the hood is lowered – a push button operation that takes less than 30 seconds – that you truly appreciate what a hardcore tune the powerpack plays. The Foo Fighters have nothing on this. Inside, the Bentley is both elegant and effortlessly modern – all leather clad indulgence and hand-built luxury with a matchless feelgood factor. Classic Bentley touches adorn the cabin with symbols like the ‘Winged B’ badge
embossed in the seat backs, Breitling analogue clock, organ-stop controls for the ventilation and chrome knurled switches inspired by contemporary jewellery. In fact so comfortable are the heavily bolstered leather seats and so cultured the switches and steering that my impression on swopping the Bentley for a model from another premium car brand was one of: “Oh dear, this feels a bit cheap.” Of course there’s a down side, not least of which is the 15mpg – if you’re lucky – petrol consumption and sky high emissions, but then if you can afford a princely

On a balmy summer evening there’s no finer experience than gliding effortlessly along as the six-speed automatic GTC eases seamlessly through the gears. There’s an open stretch of road ahead and you switch to manual mode, nudging the F1-style paddle shifts until . . . you can stave off the temptation no longer, and the boot goes down. The acceleration is thunderous. And therein lies the biggest frustration of all – a car capable of travelling

almost three times the legal limit, and you can only do 70mph. It doesn’t finish there though. Drivers who crave even greater performance can pay an extra £5,000 for the most powerful Bentley production car ever – the Continental GT Speed Coupe. The engineers have eked an extra 15% of torque and 9% of power to arm this rocket ship on wheels with a 202mph top speed, 0-60 lift-off in 4.3 seconds and standstill to 100 in just 10.3. The lucky few with access to a racetrack can take advantage of the enhanced chassis, superior grip from the 20-inch alloy wheels and performance tyres, Sport Traction system, uprated damper settings and the largest brakes of any production passenger car on sale today. It’s a whirlwind. But even Bentley can make a mistake, and in the case of the tested GT Speed it concerned the aluminium effect fascia panels and strips around the centre console, glovebox and parts of the rear. Cheap and tacky, they could have been stripped from the table tops at a greasy spoon diner. Thankfully they’re not compulsory.

H
ERE’S socially unacceptable for you. There’s a well known, upmarket private members sports club with a car park the size of two football pitches where 4x4s are only allowed to be parked against a perimeter wall. The official line, that they occupy too much space and that the doors open too wide, is of course complete nonsense. When I visited aforementioned establishment this week there was a line of out and out gas guzzlers on parade, along with a few less monstrous off-roaders belonging to people who maybe felt they were doing their bit for the environment. Lexus boasts the first high performance hybrid SUV in its imposing RX400h, but it could be said to have a wheel in each camp. Its Hybrid Synergy Drive system combines a 3.3-litre V6 petrol engine with a 165bhp front electric motor, a high voltage battery and a generator plus a second electric motor at the rear axle. At start up and at low speeds the Lexus runs silently on electric power, cutting emissions to zero. And whenever the vehicle comes to a standstill, the engine automatically cuts out to minimise fuel consumption too – a bit spooky at first but you soon get used to it. That’s the green bit. But floor the

STAR TURN: The imposing Lexus RX400h is the world’s first high performance hybrid SUV throttle and the V6 rumbles into life propelling the RX to 60mph in a fraction over seven seconds resulting in an average return, in the test car’s case at least, of 30.5 miles per gallon. The ride is superb and progress seamless thanks to the electronically controlled CVT transmission. Upshot though is a CO2 emissions rating of 192g/km. It means the RX400h may be greener than exclusively petrol or
diesel SUVs, but making the most of the car’s sporty credentials will still have a damaging effect on the environment. Otherwise you are looking at an outstanding, if very expensive, vehicle that is enjoyable to drive, offers a commanding view of the road and is sumptuously appointed. Interior space is plentiful and there’s ample room for three adults in the back while principal stowage comprises a large boot with
powered tailgate and a central box that opens at the push of a button. Each of the four trim grades – RX400h, SR, SE and SE-L – is comprehensively equipped, the likes of nine airbags (including driver’s knee airbag), eight-way electrically adjustable heated front seats, cruise control, rear privacy glass, multi-zone aircon and 18-inch alloys all coming as standard. And the RX trips the light fantastic with a couple of bright

It’s ‘wheely’ easy to get more mobile I F you or a member of your family suffers from a disability, the Motability Car Scheme offers a great way to be more mobile. Motability is a registered charity which provides mobility solutions for disabled people and their families in the UK. It was set up on the initiative of the Government in 1977, to provide vehicles and powered wheelchairs to disabled people. Since then more than two million cars, powered wheelchairs and scooters have been provided through the scheme. Today the scheme purchases over 5% of all new cars, powered wheelchairs and scooters sold in the UK, via a network of 4,500 Motability dealers. Special terms have been arranged with a range of motor manufacturers, wheelchair and vehicle adaptation suppliers, banks and insurers, so a variety of schemes can be offered to enable disabled people to become more mobile. Motability customers agree to pay all or part of their Mobility Allowance, depending on their choice of vehicle, for the duration of
their contract hire or hire purchase agreement. To apply for any of the Motability schemes you must receive either the Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or a War Pensioners’ Motability Supplement (WPMS). Vehicles can be adapted and tailored to the driving needs of a disabled person. However, you don’t have to be a driver to qualify for one of the Motability schemes. Non-drivers who receive the mobility allowance can obtain a vehicle as a passenger and propose up to two other people as permitted drivers (such as family or carers). Applications can also be made on behalf of a child, aged three and over, in receipt of the allowance. There are two schemes, through Motability, to help disabled people obtain a vehicle: a contract hire scheme and a hire purchase scheme. The most popular way is leasing a car through
Motability's contract hire agreement, with 95% of customers choosing this method. It gives you the option of great flexibility and assistance, including a new car of your choice every three years; insurance and personal accident cover; servicing and maintenance; full breakdown assistance from RAC; free replacement tyres fitted by Kwik-Fit; and window or windscreen replacement at no extra cost. The policy continues right to the end of your three-year lease, with a seamless transfer to your new car. What's more, you can choose from more than 4,000 makes and models of car. If you’d rather buy your own car, the hire purchase scheme comes into play. Through the hire purchase scheme you negotiate the actual purchase price with your Motability dealer. You’re also responsible for organising and paying for comprehensive insurance,

IMES may be tough for Vauxhall, but in the Insignia the company has come up with a car of outstanding merit. As rival mid-size models from the likes of Ford, Volkswagen and Renault moved increasingly more upmarket, the pressure mounted on the Americans to raise the stakes. And at the start of this year they pulled a rabbit from the hat with an elegant, classy offering that’s light years ahead of its predecessor the Vectra. I’m not one to take much notice of sound bites, but GM Europe’s design guru Mark Adams got it spot-on by describing Insignia as “sculptured artistry meets German precision”. A few years ago you could never have made a remark like that with regard to a repmobile. But times have moved on to the point that the Insignia is as likely to appeal as strongly to private family buyers as it does to the fleets. This is a very stylish looking car – though not as sleek as the Sports Tourer estate model – with its bonnet crease, restyled Griffin badge and sweeping light lenses really catching the eye. The hatchback and saloon versions come with a choice of three petrol and two diesel engines, the latter pair both 2.0-litre CDTi turbocharged units producing 130 or 160PS. Prices are from £17,130. STYLE AND SUBSTANCE: The 2009 Vauxhall Insignia hatchback
return journey with twice the load. At no point did the Insignia feel anything other than absolutely poised, stable and rewarding. The hatchback’s boot is long and very deep, so you can pack in loads of gear and interior space is acceptable provided you don’t need to carry three passengers across the back – the centre rear position is
perched and low on headroom. Cabin materials feel of a premium quality while the instrument panel is angled and the dashboard has a wraparound effect creating an illusion of space. Best of all are the dials which look like they are floating in a pool of glowing red light. But not only is this a car with lots
of presence it also feels well bolted together and has that almost Germanic feel of quality and so much better than the Vectra. All Insignia models come with the likes of ESP, passenger airbag deactivation, automatic headlights, electric driver’s seat adjustment, cruise control and a full complement of airbags as standard.
