RACETRACK technology could soon be available to family motorists who want the best possible performance from their tyres. The heat-blast treatment that gives racing drivers better grip and faster lap times is being offered to fast-fit chains, dealerships and garages. Equipment developer Tyre Technology believes enthusiast drivers are happy to pay for treatment that will give their tyres the ultimate performance capabilities while also making them last longer. Costing £15 per tyres, the treatment takes 25 minutes and tyres are left to cure for three days before they can be used.

Chevy could prove a spark of genius

T’S the calculated gamble that could quickly prove to be a spark of genius. American legend Chevrolet has jettisoned its Matiz model – a last link with the old Daewoo brand it took over five years ago - and come up with a car that takes it into the youth market for the first time. And if there’s a risk that more traditional buyers will be scared off by the funky new Spark, well, the simple fact is that you don’t succeed by diluting great designs to please everyone. The smallest Chevy hits the streets in early spring with a promise that it will fit in with even the most frantic of lifestyles. That’s hardly surprising given that this aptly-named small car looks every inch a vehicle in a hurry with its fresh character, racy looks and striking colours. If you favour cute and cuddly then look elsewhere, but if you’re switched on by something with more of a rebel yell then this could be the one for you. Chevy insists that Spark will only ever be available as a
by MIKE ALEXANDER five-door car – because it looks like a three-door anyway, those rear handles discreetly tucked away behind the rear pillar. With prices starting at £6,945 there’s much to recommend it. For instance the Spark is wider than Matiz, so interior space is more than adequate with ample shoulder space and sufficient legroom for a pair of tall rear passengers. Slick styling touches include piano black, satin steel or scarlet detailing that swoops from the doors to a neat stowage trough above the glovebox, while the seats feel durable and plastics soft on the eye. But the cabin’s focal point is its motorcycle-style instrument pod, which sits on top of the steering column while the analogue speedo is backed up by a digital tachometer, just like on a sports bike. It’s clear and easy to read and looks cool at night thanks to being backlit by ice blue neon lighting when the
headlamps are turned on. Two petrol engines are available from launch – a 1.0-litre model producing 67bhp and a 1.2-litre unit generating 80bhp. They performed well on a mixed test route that took in a series of motorway stretches and winding country lanes, though both laboured a little from standstill. Once up to speed it was a different story as the Spark displayed terrific stability and a well-weighted response from the steering, though the 1.2-litre model felt appreciably more spirited.
Urban conditions are more likely to be the Spark’s bread and butter however and with its low insurance ratings (group one for 1.0) and ability to squeeze into tight parking spaces it’s pretty practical. Official average fuel figures exceed 55mpg for each car, though for everyday driving the important number is likely to be closer to the urban figure of 42.8. The entry-level Spark comes with six airbags as standard and has achieved a four-star Euro NCAP crash test rating, with a maximum five stars for child protection.

Models in Spark + trim, also available with the 1.0-litre engine and five-speed manual transmission, come with air-con, electric front windows, central locking and a USB-compatible four-speaker stereo. The LS, which is expected to be the most popular trim level, comes with a choice of engines and adds the likes of remote central locking, silver trim detailing, 14-inch wheels, body-coloured door handles and mirrors, a chrome-effect grille surround, front fog lamps and a body-coloured rear spoiler. And for an extra £500 the LS+ gets smart alloy wheels, electric windows front and rear, a trip computer, heated electric door mirrors, roof bars and steering wheel audio controls. The range-topping LT, which costs £9,845, comes only with the 1.2-litre engine, has 15-inch alloys, climate control, interior detailing to match the exterior, a body kit and six-speaker stereo, while options across the range include metallic paint, rear parking sensors and electronic stability control.

SMALL WONDER: The latest incarnation of the Ellesmere Port-built Astra is the most stylish and sophisticated yet – and a tribute to its dedicated local workforce

ORKERS at Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port plant have had to operate in the most difficult of circumstances in recent times, but they have completed a magnificent job in producing the new Astra model. Pitching against proven top notchers like the Ford Focus and VW Golf, as well as value offerings in the shape of the latest Kia C’eed and revitalised Mazda3, is no easy task, but the new Astra has all the credentials to punch above its weight. For one thing it’s really dressed for a night out, looking more like a mini Insignia than its pleasant if fairly anonymous predecessor. And the feeling of quality – from overall build to the prestige interior – is that of a model from a class, and price bracket, above. At present the Astra comes just as a five-door hatchback, though

three-door, estates and convertibles are on their way, and there are five petrol engines plus a trio of diesels. The tested 1.7 CDTi 125 falls in the middle of the oil-burning line-up and is a unit with ample punch along with the ability to return an official 60 miles per gallon, though our figure was closer to the 55mpg mark. It’s a really smooth car to drive if you’re travelling long distances yet has lots of flexibility for urban conditions and a ride quality that irons out all but the most severe bumps. The six-speed manual
transmission is also very slick and while the steering is a bit light it’s something you soon get used to – along with the engine noise. Where the Vauxhall design team really has excelled, though, is with the car’s interior. For instance, high quality materials along with metallic inserts really make the steering wheel and sweeping centre console stand out. There’s plenty of space too – especially up front – adequate headroom, decent rear legroom and even a centre rear passenger can travel without feeling the odd one out. The seats are also comfortable, the back ones splitting and folding 60/40 and the nicely-shaped, accessible boot is also two-tier. Safety-wise, the Astra is well equipped with the likes of Electronic Stability Programme, active front seat head restraints, front, side and curtain airbags and Isofix child seat attachments on

Toyota’s reputation ‘not damaged by recall issues’ says survey

TOYOTA’S reputation has not been damaged by its decision to recall 1.8 million vehicles across Europe. A survey by a leading warranty provider has revealed that more than 75% of people do not view Toyota as a less reliable brand because of the recall over brake
and accelerator issues. Warranty Direct carried out the research on its Reliability Index website – a database that charts the trustworthiness of thousands of used cars by taking into account each vehicle’s rate of failure, cost of repair, mileage and age.
According to the company Toyota sits high in the Reliability Index, with just 12 per cent of its cars hitting a fault in an average year, well under the overall average of 28 per cent. In Britain, Toyota is recalling some 180,000 iQ, Aygo, Yaris, Auris, Corolla, Avensis and

Verso models because of concerns over the accelerator mechanism. A number of the latest generation Prius hybrid cars are also to have brake checks. Toyota dealers across the UK are currently checking up to 6,000 cars a day.

Set to make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show, the long-awaited A1 hatchback is expected to provide fierce competition in the compact car sector. Likely to cost around £13,000 when it goes on sale, the German firm's smallest luxury motoring package will make life tougher in the showrooms for similar-size volume models like the Ford Focus and
