The grass is greener for Ian as he makes a new start in life By Janet Tansley
E
VERYTHING is coming up roses for Ian Woods – or it will be, once he rolls his sleeves up and gets stuck in to his brand new garden! Ian has always dreamed of having a garden and, at the age of 50, he has finally got one. The Anfield man, who had lived at the same property for all of those 50 years, has finally made a fresh start – and it’s just down the road from his boyhood home. “Having a garden to look out on, after all these years of only having a tiny back yard, is really quite something,” he said. “I’ve turned 50 and it feels like I’ve opened a whole new chapter in my life.” Ian had lived on Hayfield Street all his life. He inherited the terrace house from his auntie, and at one point Ian, his parents, his grandparents and his auntie all lived on the street next door to one another. But the house, which had become dilapidated over the years, is finally being demolished, along with neighbouring properties, under council regeneration plans for the area. Ian has now moved into a brand new Keepmoat home at The Parks, a popular development of modern, stylish properties on Robson Street, less than a mile from his former home. And the two bedroom home has proved a revelation to Ian. He said: “The difference it has made to my quality of life is just unbelievable. “In the old house I only had gas fired heaters on the walls, and it was incredibly draughty, so I tended to stay in just one room and try to keep that warm. I can now afford to heat the whole house, which has made such a difference. “The house is beautiful. There’s definitely some sadness that goes along with leaving a house you’ve grown up in, as it is so full of
■ Ian Woods in his new dream garden at The Parks, Anfield. Above inset, inside the house and left inset, the development memories, but I feel really excited about the future now. “I’ve only moved down the road, but it feels like I’ve moved to another world.” The Parks development is just a short stroll from two of the world’s most iconic football stadia in Anfield and Goodison Park. And the second phase of the development is now up for sale with 97 new two, three and four bedroom properties on offer,
providing ideal homes for first time buyers or families seeking room to grow. A stunning show home has been opened at the scheme, to give prospective buyers a taste of the space and what is on offer. Jen Brown, sales director at Keepmoat, said: “We’re really pleased for Ian. He’s a great guy and we know that his new home will make a big difference to his lifestyle.
“The properties are all designed with high levels of insulation, double glazing and energy efficient boilers, so they are economical to run, as well as providing lots of style and space. “The development continues to attract a lot of interest from first time buyers, professional couples and families, and lots of people who come to look around are genuinely amazed at how much they can get for their money.”
Prices at The Parks start at £92,995 for a two bedroom property, or just £74,395 with the Help to Buy scheme. The show home for the scheme can be found at Robson Street, Anfield L5 6RG, and is open Thursday to Sunday 10am to 5pm or Monday 10am to 6pm. ■ For further information, call Keepmoat on 0151 260 4714, or visit www.keepmoat.com.

T
HIS week we create a spot of ‘disco heaven’ as a tired storage basement is reborn AS a laser-lit, colourful, get-together space where younger family members can chill out.
Alterton Furniture Giant Fob Watch Wall Clock £88.99 from wayfair, www.wayfair.co.uk THIS mighty fellow stands out thanks to its impressive scale and vintage look. It's perfect for period homes or anywhere where history is important. H101 x W74cm.
OUT OF THE DARK Previously, a large mirror tried to brighten this basement but, with no natural light, there was nothing to reflect – so it was all a bit pointless. Inspired by decades of night clubbing, we added colour-changing lights concealed at the room’s corners. If your project has plaster board walls then this is easy as you can cut out the corners and run electrical wiring behind the cavity. At the touch of a button it’s blue, pink, green or white – talk about decorating with light! You can find colour-changing
flexible lighting at Litecraft, www.litecraft.co.uk WOOD IS GOOD The basement had no dampness so we were able to use hardwood to bring warmth and friendliness while being hardwearing and durable. The timber planks were laid from front to back to elongate the space. Get the look with Rustic Oiled Oak, £29.99m2 from McKay Flooring, www.mckayflooring.co.uk CUSTOMISE STORE-BOUGHT ITEMS A funky sideboard takes centre stage with bold colours and makes a fashion-forward statement. The unit was initially plain black but we painted the body and legs white, then picked out the drawer fronts and doors in vivid green. The large Trollsta sideboard came
from Ikea (it’s now discontinued, though a smaller lilac option is still available) but you could take the idea and apply it to an existing sideboard to create your own look. FUNKY FURNITURE, FUNKY HOME We love the ‘groovy baby’ lines of the dining table with its swooping white base and round top. Once we’d added the clear plastic and chrome chairs, the finished look appeared almost invisible, avoiding visual clutter and keeping space clear and precise. The Docksta table and four Tobias chairs cost £390 from Ikea, www.ikea.com ART YOU CAN WALK ON Art rugs combine underfoot comfort with colour, making them a perfect source of decor, especially in plain rooms where they really stand out.
Use them to protect a wooden floor and to map out specific room functions in open-plan spaces – here the dining room is clearly delineated. Visit www.modern-rugs.co.uk PLUNDER THE PAST TO CREATE THE FUTURE Fashion is all about taking elements of the past and present and putting them together to create your own individual look. In this fashion-forward room, the sideboard is offset beautifully with an antique-style mirror that has been treated to the same vivid lime colour as the sideboard, thereby tying them both together and creating a splash of colour at the same time. TO DO
Waiting for warmth THE Malvern Show has gone and how brilliant it was – despite the very changeable weather. The whole event was superbly organised – a lovely lady called Nina Acton played a very important role and helped make it so special. Now it’s all about Chelsea and this centenary year promises to be the biggest and best ever. I’ll be there for the whole week so it’s going to be hectic. At Malvern I couldn’t resist buying plants (as if there weren’t enough queuing up to be planted anyway) and they must be planted before departure. Despite having wish lists of plants for later in the year, I seem to have concentrated on plants that are at their best now. SEEDS OF SENTIMENT: I’VE planted double cowslips, some more white trilliums, pictured above, to go with the trillium grandiflora I planted on Gardeners’ World a few weeks ago. There is dicentra ‘Spring Morning’, with ferny foliage and delightful pendulous flowers, which I wanted as much for sentimental value as anything else. When I was little, it grew in the small front garden under the copper beech trees my mum and I planted. They were seedlings rescued from a site where the road was being widened but eventually grew into a lovely hedge. It’s not just bought in new plants that are of special interest now – we’re sowing seed of all kinds. Our vegetable sowing programme is way behind but so too are our annual and perennial flowers. This week I’ve sown everything from cabbages to cornflowers, pictured below, and if only the weather would warm up they might stand a chance of catching up.
One of the glories of spring is beautiful cherry blossom which bursts forth in streets and parks up and down the country
C
Romance
HELSEA show time always reminds me of cherry blossom. Whether you live in a town or city, in the suburbs or in a country village – even if you have no garden – cherry blossom thrusts itself into your consciousness. Flowering cherries are one of the most widely planted street trees. Parks and gardens abound with them – tall and narrow, as round as a lollipop or wide and sweeping until they almost touch the floor. In May, their branches are decked with soft pink and white flowers. When we lived in Ladbroke Grove in west London, my route back from work would undergo a diversion all through May as I rode my bike down Chesterton Road. Who wouldn’t smile to see such exquisite flowers, loading branches so thickly that you could see neither wood nor emerging leaves? After a windy night, their confetti covered the pavement and children would pick up their bouquets. The British have imported all manner of goods from Japan but nothing more enlightening than cherry blossom. CAUSE TO CELEBRATE In Japan, cherries play a hugely important role in daily life. Hanami, the festival that honours the arrival of the cherry blossom, is celebrated throughout the country. Families and friends go in parties to view the massed blossoms, making a day of it with special picnics. The onset of the opening blossoms is tracked daily on the news as it moves northwards from the warmer south around Okinawa in January, to Tokyo in late March and up in the mountains and around Hokkaido in April. Although this would seem to be a long flowering season, it only lasts in each place for a short while and its impact lies in the fact that the cherry trees are suddenly and completely covered in blossom. Just as suddenly, the petals fall like snow and are lost within a week.
■ Beautiful blossom in an English park
Short-lived cherry blossom has been a traditional metaphor for the ephemerality of life followed by the inevitability of death. And the lesson for life is to appreciate the moment, the intense beauty and the optimistic joy of spring, before it passes. The variety most widely planted is ‘Somei-Yoshino’ and was probably introduced in the mid-1800s. It is possibly a cross with a Korean species. Although it has become a national tradition, Hanami must be fairly recent in Japanese history, even though sakura, cherry blossom, has
always been revered and portrayed in pictures and poems. And there are records of the nobility as far back as the third century celebrating cherries. Now everyone can follow the ritual of visiting the blossoms. Most of the Japanese flowering cherries were developed from Prunus serrulata and Prunus sieboldii. Prunus serrulata was the first of these cherries to be widely grown in Europe. Ironically, it was first introduced from Canton in China. It is a beautiful tree in its own right – of small stature with a
plateau-like top, with bunches of double white flowers. Prunus sieboldii is now known as Prunus ‘Takasago’. It is a pretty, spreading tree with double flowers of pale pink. The resulting Sekura crosses, Somei Yoshino, have double, pure white flowers with a pink blush at the base with just enough variation to give the breathtaking frothy look when seen from a distance. Cherries are fun. Many of them have wonderful bark, their young foliage is often pretty and their autumn colour can be magnificent. No matter how small your garden,

Q
I WANT to grow old roses but most have only a short flowering period. Any ideas?
WHAT is the difference between wild rocket and the one-season variety.
A
A
DAVID Austin Roses has a strain of English Roses with the shapes and fragrances of old roses and the repeat flowering of modern varieties. They are easy to grow and reliable.
RUCOLA selvatica, wild rocket, is a perennial and will grow for several years. It can be cut over and over and will always come again. Its taste is stronger than cultivated
rocket, rucola coltivata, pictured right. Sow annual rocket successionally every few weeks and cut it when it's young. With the perennial variety you don't need to keep sowing, you just keep picking.
Q
IS USING mycorrhizal fungi to plant shrubs worth the cost?
A
THESE fungi do aid root growth and help shrubs and trees settle in. But they must be in direct contact with the roots to work – so there's no point sprinkling a bit in the planting hole and hoping for the best. You pays your money and you takes your choice.

■ A wild meadow
in the wild with LIAM CREEDON
UK meadows under threat
there is a cherry for you. If there is little space for a broad-topped tree, then the answer may be to go for a columnar cultivar. You could follow the planting fashion of the 60s and try Prunus ‘Amanogawa’ – serrulata erecta – given an AGM by the RHS almost 80 years ago. Its familiar upright branches are well-endowed with upward-facing, soft pink flowers – perfect against a blue sky in late April or May. If there is space you could go for the great white cherry, Prunus ‘Tai-haku’. An emperor among cherries, it has large, single flowers of brilliant white. Cherry blossoms are easy to grow and are not fussy, although they dislike poorly drained soil and will not tolerate boggy conditions. I love them dearly but sometimes I yearn for my own Hanami. Not a cherry at all, Exochorda is the most showy blossom at Glebe Cottage and it has responded well to severe pruning. It is a picture of white blossom at the moment and, from a distance, looks like tumbling snow. Flowering cherries steal our hearts as they show how life is short and sweet and should be enjoyed, just like the joy of spring...
■ Cherry blossom on a lake in Tokyo
IF ASKED to come up with a list of the UK’s rarest habitats, very few people would include meadows. But alongside lowland heathland, salt marsh and ancient woodland, our flower rich-meadows and grasslands are now one of our most threatened and rapidly disappearing environments. Millions of acres have been lost, with only a tiny 2% of the meadows and grasslands that existed in the 1930s still remaining. That something as quintessentially British as the meadow could have disappeared so quickly from right under our noses may well come as something of a shock. But unless something is done to rapidly reverse the decline of these ancient and vitally important landscapes, the traditional meadow that has graced so many paintings and poems will disappear forever under the plough. Wildflower meadows have been part and parcel of Britain’s agricultural landscape for thousands of years. They are not intensively farmed, but rather managed in traditional ways through grazing and hay-making. These methods promote a very high diversity of wild plant species. Traditionally, cattle were kept out of the meadow from early spring to midsummer allowing a wide range of grasses and flowers to flourish. This paradise in miniature is an assault on the senses. Bumblebees, grasshoppers and hoverflies compete with the musical tinkerings of yellowhammers and skylarks to weave an
intricate gauze of sound around the gentle landscape. This sonata is embellished with the delicious perfume of flowering thistle, cowslip, buttercup, orchid and violets. There is movement at every turn, from the flickering chessboard patterns of marbled white butterflies and azure flashes of the Adonis blue to the scampering of unseen weasels and the explosive escape dashes of rabbits. Wildlife charity Plantlife is spearheading a campaign to save our remaining meadows. Richard Moyse, who manages Plantlife’s wildflower meadow reserve Ranscombe Farm in Kent, explains their allure. “A real wild flower grassland is a feast for the senses that can stay with you for a very long time,” he says. Meadows support a rich diversity of wild plants, insects, animals and birds, including many rare species of international importance. Nowadays wildflower meadows are viewed by the agricultural industry as uneconomic. The few that remain suffer from neglect and as a result many sites fail to qualify for support from countryside stewardship grants. Plantlife’s Justina Simpson explains: “The Save Our Magnificent Meadows project is about taking emergency conservation action to preserve existing wildflower meadows and grasslands in targeted areas. Now is the perfect time to plan your date with our magnificent meadows.” ■ Visit www.plantlife. org.uk/nature-reserves

NEW HOMES Dream home for a dream life
By Katie McLoughlin
M
OVING home and getting married are rated as two of the most stressful experiences in life. Do both at the same time and you’re asking for trouble, unless, that is, you buy a brand-new home as newlyweds Cathy and Steve Knott found. Keen to start married life in a new home together, the couple chose to buy a brand-new Redrow home in south Liverpool to take the hassle out of moving. The couple fell in love with the Redrow homes at Cressington Heath but feared they’d lost their dream home when the original phase sold out. Cathy explains: “We were getting married and wanted a new start so we decided to put our four-bedroom semi up for sale. We’d looked at homes in the earlier phase of Cressington Heath but had a house to sell so thought we’d missed out. “After we’d sold our old home we discovered that Redrow had started building in the area again and reserved a three bedroom Brecon off-plan.” Steve and Cathy married just weeks after moving. With a wedding to organise, they appreciated the ease of living that buying a new home offered. Cathy says: “Buying a brandnew home meant we got exactly what we wanted. It was great to be able to choose things like the
finish of the kitchen cabinets and the bathroom tiles rather than having to make do with what someone else has left behind.” Cathy and Steve’s Brecon boasts a spacious lounge that runs from the front to the rear of the property, with French doors to the garden. Like all new Redrow homes, there is an open-plan kitchen/dining room with integrated appliances. Upstairs there are three
bedrooms, one with en suite, plus a family bathroom. Well insulated, with double glazing and central heating as standard, new homes like Cathy and Steve’s are 40% more efficient to run than homes built only a decade ago. “I’ve noticed that the house is a lot warmer than the one we moved from and our water rates have gone down,” says Cathy. “I’ve never lived in a new- build
home before but wouldn’t go back.” Current availability at Cressington Heath includes a choice of three and four bedroom homes with prices from £179,995. ■ To find out more, visit Redrow’s show home at Cressington Heath, off Garston Road, open Thursday to Monday from 10am to 5.30pm, call 0151 345 3010 or visit www.redrow.co.uk/cressington.

Customers sing the praises of Lovell
■ The lounge in a Lovell home offers space and light in a contemporary setting and is just part of the package which has meant the housebuilder has won a second customer service award
28
GLOWING feedback from North West house-hunters has led to housebuilder Lovell scooping a gold award for customer service in an independent national survey. The accolade, awarded by In-house Research, is given to house-builders if at least 90% of their customers would recommend them. In Lovell’s case, this figure was an impressive 96.6% in the North West. It follows on from Lovell’s receipt of the gold award for customer satisfaction last year, cementing the company’s outstanding reputation. Clare Noakes, regional sales manager for Lovell in the North West, says: “We’re extremely pleased to have struck gold with our customers for the second year
running. Customer recommendation is one of the strongest indicators that we are offering the right level of service and to achieve this standard with 96.6% of our customers is really something to be proud of.” Through an independent survey undertaken by In-house Research, all customers were asked whether they would recommend Lovell based on the whole experience of purchasing a new home. Lovell is building a range of high quality, affordable new homes across the North West, including developments in Wirral, Liverpool, Manchester and Carlisle. ■ For more information on Lovell and the locations in which it builds, visit the website at www.lovell.co.uk/newhomes

Cosy up to carpet
DEAR DONNY
Q
WE had a reinforced steel joist put in when our extension was built 12 years ago. Three years ago we noticed a ceiling crack. It closes if the heating is on but it’s unsightly when the room is cold.
A
HOME wouldn’t be homely without carpet. Carpet makes it cosy and comfy underfoot, and it’s less draughty and more heat retentive and sound absorbing than many other floor coverings. But with so many different types to choose from, it’s hard to know where to begin. Picking the colour of your new carpet, and whether you want it to be patterned or plain, is just part of the decision process. While many carpets are suitable for use throughout the home, some have a more luxurious feel, perfect for areas of light foot traffic such as bedrooms. Others are more hardwearing, making them ideal for areas of heavy foot traffic like hallways. Having lots of different carpets in one home isn’t a good look, especially if they meet in the hallway or landing, so bear this in mind if you’re replacing one carpet and not others. The carpet’s pile affects its appearance, feel and performance. As a general rule, the more luxurious the carpet is (ie the longer the pile), the more care it will need to keep it looking good. Choose from twist piles, which have a coarse, rugged finish; velvet piles, which have a smooth, luxurious finish; loop piles, which are similar to natural flooring, such as coir (avoid if you have pets, particularly cats, because of the damage their claws can do); and saxony piles, which have a sensuous feel, but aren’t suitable for heavy foot traffic areas because they have a deep pile. How a carpet looks, feels and wears also depends on what it’s made of. Without a doubt, a wool carpet is a quality carpet, but wool can be blended with nylon or polypropylene (at least 50% wool is recommended) to improve the carpet’s performance, make it more affordable, or create a special effect. Wool carpet is warm and soft, with a luxurious feel. It wears well, is easy to maintain as it doesn’t soil easily, and is naturally flame retardant, as well as being sustainable and environmentally friendly. If you want to support our home-grown industry, opt for British wool – a staggering 70% of it goes into carpets. “If in doubt, look for the Wool Rich Quality Mark - it’s the only quality assurance initiative in the UK carpet industry and is your guarantee that the suitability claims made by the manufacturer are true,” says Rupert Anton, of industry body The Carpet Foundation. “You really can believe what it says on the label. Based on British

IF you have a building certificate, then the beam will have been installed properly. Sometimes the hole in the wall where the beam is supported is filled with plasterboard that can crack. I would cut the crack out to see how far back it goes, then fill with plaster. Or place self-adhesive fibre tape over it and fill over with a fast-set filler to solve the problem.
Q
IS there a white paint I can use to touch up inside my microwave?
■ As a rule, the more luxurious the carpet is (ie the longer the pile), the more care it will need to keep it looking good, and, below, Honeysuckle carpet from Bell Twist range, 80% wool 20% nylon, £40 square metre (www.brintons.net)
Flooringfashionscomeandgo, butfewfloor coveringscanmatchthechoiceofcolour, patternandtextureofferedbycarpet.JULIA GRAYlooksatsomeoftheoptions Standards and international product tests, the quality mark looks at wear index, appearance retention, surface pile density, tuft density and luxury rating.” Nylon is often blended with wool in a carpet and is extremely hardwearing and easy to clean. Nylon also has great abrasion, stain and soil resistance and lends itself to multiple colours of carpet. Similarly, polypropylene carpet is extremely hardwearing and easy to maintain – it’s stain resistant and keeps its colour well. Polypropylene carpets can be very inexpensive, so they’re a good choice if you’re on a budget.
Just as it’s important to have your new carpet professionally fitted (and measured), it’s also essential to invest in new, good quality underlay, as it helps the carpet to sit properly and wear evenly. In addition, it increases heat and sound insulation and reduces pile compression, so the carpet looks good for longer – new underlay can actually increase the life of a carpet by 40%. To find out more about underlay and carpet, including Top Ten Tips on Buying Carpet, visit The Carpet Foundation’s website, www.carpetfoundation.com, which is a mine of information.
PRODUCT OF THE WEEK TO celebrate the launch of the B&Q Sentebale Forget-Me-Not Garden at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show in London, B&Q has unveiled a brand new species of lily to the UK, as part of its Chelsea Collection of plants available in store. The collection will help customers recreate the show at
home, and the stunning Chelsea Lily (£10, B&Q) has been developed to grow bigger flower heads and be whiter than other lilies. Twenty per cent from the sale of each lily will go to Prince Harry’s Sentebale charity, which helps vulnerable children in the small African country of Lesotho.

I WOULD advise against that. The inside of the microwave oven will be a special material to receive microwaves and you don’t want to take the risk of contaminating the inside.

REPLACE the old plywood or put a thin layer of new plywood over the existing surface. It’s far easier than trying to scrape, burn or chemically remove the old adhesive off. Be careful with the old vinyl floor tiles, they may have asbestos through them. ■ For more tips go to www.diy-donny.co.uk
