Every token counts
LIVERPOOL is truly the capital of community! “David Cameron talked about a ‘Big Society’. The truth is that a society with a conscience, a real community spirit, has always existed in Liverpool. And our Wish campaign provides stunning evidence to support my case. Liverpool Echo readers across Merseyside collected a staggering 2.6 million Wish tokens. That is a remarkable effort and everyone who helped deserves a huge pat on the back. The good news is their hard work will result in community groups across the region benefiting from cash handouts. For instance our top collector Woodlands Hospice have £1,800 to spend. And of course Woodlands can look forward to the £10,000 building makeover from Fletchrose as part of their reward. For those with smaller handouts we know from past experience that a little goes a long way and that even a few pounds can make a big difference. I’d just like to say, on behalf of the Echo, thanks so much to everyone who took part in our Wish Campaign. On our part we got enormous satisfaction from having the opportunity to highlight the magnificent work done by community groups and charities across this fantastic region. I hope the publicity is of value.” Alastair Machray, Liverpool ECHO Editor
FLETCHROSE – HELPING BUILD LOCAL COMMUNITIES As the Wish Campaign has reached its climax and the ECHO has tallied up its tokens, the winner has been unveiled and we can now see which community group has exceeded expectations. The winner will benefit from an additional £10,000 makeover prize from Fletchrose and the company will soon meet with group representatives to see how they can begin to plan and develop the building ‘challenge’ for their community group. Paul Durose, Managing Director of Fletchrose, said: “For us, this is the best part of the whole campaign and we’re really looking forward to discussing how we can apply our building skills and experience to improve, extend or enhance a community-based facility.”
He added: “Community lies at the heart of everything we do and the Wish Campaign has allowed us to make a real difference to a Merseyside-based group that are passionate about the place they live and the people that live there.” Fletchrose is a local employer with a workface of 80-plus people. A local workforce, Fletchrose is keen to recruit directly, employing skilled tradesmen and women who share the company’s commitment to delivering excellent levels of service. Launched some five years ago by Liverpoolborn 29-year-old, Paul Durose, the company has grown steadily, weathering recession and expanding the business under his leadership and vision. Developing from a subcontractor to main contractor during this time, Fletchrose work closely with several Merseyside housing associations and local authorities under long-term framework agreements.
Paul concluded: “Our people and those we work with are at the heart of our business. It’s fantastic to see the difference we can make to people’s lives by improving local housing through new kitchens, bathrooms, heating systems and more. It gives us all a real sense of satisfaction and makes our jobs feel worthwhile. “The Wish Campaign has allowed us to take our ethos and vision to the next level and carry out our first Fletchrose Challenge. We want to involve the local community and encourage them to both steer and be part of the project itself - let the Fletchrose challenge begin!”

1 Woodlands Hospice
Carole Riley Woodlands Hospice provides specialist palliative care to people with life-limiting or terminal illnesses, including cancer, heart failure and endstage lung disease. All care is provided free of charge. Each and every day the hospice has to raise £2,000 through fundraising and donations to secure the overall hospice services. We would like to use the WISH 2012 money towards the running costs at the hospice, for example nursing care and patients’ meals. It costs £200 per patient for one day of nursing care and £17.35 to feed one patient for one day in our in-patient unit. We collected 188208 tokens We will receive £1,798.82
2 CHICS - Children’s Cancer Support Group Eddie Hincks We are the family support group attached to the children’s oncology unit at Alder Hey Hospital and have been since 1986. From that date to this we have been run solely by parents who have or who have had a child with cancer. Our main aim is to support the whole family not just the ill child. Any family who has a child treated for cancer or leukeamia at Alder Hey is eligible to join CHICS. There are no membership fees at all. Families receive a monthly newsletter and we hold parent/grandparent meetings once a month, where people can talk safe in the knowledge that they are surrounded by people who understand. We also run drop in centres at Bootle and on the outpatients clinic on the unit at the hospital. We deal with many outside organisations such as holiday providers and with organisations who help in a practical way by also giving the children something to look forward to. We offer telephone support, and have an extensive library of leaflets and books. We would use the money from the Echo’s WISH 2012 Campaign to carry on our programme of events designed to give the children a variety of treats/days out/ Christmas party throughout the year. These treats are obviously meant to provide a lot of fun but are also a welcome distraction from the many hospital visits that the children have to make. Also during this time, the children and their families are under enormous emotional strain and to spend some time away from the hospital alongside people who are going through similar treatments, helps as they do not have to explain themselves. We collected 101912 tokens We will receive £974.04
3 Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice Carol Kirkham Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice is a very special charity. We provide 24 hour one-to-one care to infants from birth to 5 years who suffer with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions. Our hospices provide vital support to families who would otherwise struggle with their 24/7 care responsibilities, often with nowhere else to turn. Our facilities are designed to provide a ‘home from home’ for our special babies and through the use of multi-sensory environments and learning through play, our nursing staff can ensure that our special babies live life to the full. We support families through counselling and in coming to terms with their child’s condition, recognising that bereavement begins with the diagnosis of a terminal condition. This care is continued in the event of the loss of a child through extended counselling. At £3,500 per day just to maintain our current level of care we rely upon the ongoing support we receive from the community to continue to develop our services. For more info http://youtu.be/TbARiSKOI8s We have a fantastic opportunity to extend and develop our end-of-life care to respond to the increased demand on this aspect of our services. At present, we provide end-of-life care to children who regularly use our hospice for respite or palliative care. With increased focus and directed funds, we would be able to extend this service so that more families can receive enhanced end-of-life care and support in our ‘home from home’ environment. 4 Animals In Need
Caroline Cassidy Animals In Need was formed in 1991 after many years of rescuing and supporting abandoned animals. Our beautiful 5 acre site now has woodland areas and walkways for our dogs. The Sanctuary provides support and care for over 250 dogs, cats, rabbits as well as ex-farm animals. We also provide a wildlife haven for hedgehogs, birds, rabbits, toads etc. We are heavily involved with neutering feral cats and rehabilitating the kittens and our dog outwork is cutting edge. We neuter, vaccinate and microchip all our animals before re-homing. We have a strict non-destruction policy. All donations we receive are used for the direct benefit of the animals. We have 10 full-time dedicated staff that each work over 50 hours a week, much of this is voluntary. The trustees (all unpaid) work tirelessly at fundraising and running the Sanctuary. We wish to update facilities on site and create a special care unit which will enable us to provide onsite veterinary care not only to our Sanctuary animals, but also to assist vulnerable people with vulnerable animals here in Merseyside. Donations of food and lowercost veterinary treatment can make a big difference and help reduce the huge strain that we experience every day of the year by lowering the number of animals having to be admitted into our Sanctuary. Neutering also plays a big part in our animal welfare work by stopping unwanted litters from being born. We have come to the aid many times to help Echo readers with their pets and know that they will do the same for us. We collected 72512 tokens We will receive £693.04

Since 2008 we have raised enough money to purchase over 50 large flower planters which are on Allerton Road, Rose Lane and in Allerton library grounds. We have also planted 2 shrub beds in the grounds of Allerton library bringing more colour to the garden, and we look after a flower bed at the entrance to the library. We also have our own penguin standing proudly on the lawn which we designed and help paint! To cover our costs we organise a different fundraiser every other month, one of which is a garden fete every July on Allerton library lawn, and have included a scarecrow competition one year, and a teddy bears’ parade at another, to try to involve local children’s groups. We have a wonderful band of ladies who make cakes for our coffee mornings, and our homemade cake stall is always a sellout! Allerton in Bloom - cultivating community spirit! Archdiocese of Liverpool Youth Pilgrimage Sefton Coach
Dennis Jones MORE than 500 teenagers from Merseyside travelled to Lourdes as part of the annual youth pilgrimage organised by the Catholic Archdiocese of Liverpool. The young pilgrims journeyed via Dover in a 10-coach cavalcade which took around 26 hours to reach its destination. Once in Lourdes the teenagers spent a week rising at 4.30am to work in the hospital while others pushed the sick and disabled in wheelchairs to the different places of devotion and to Mass. More than 1,300 pilgrims made the journey to Lourdes this year as part of the 82nd annual Liverpool Archdiocesan pilgrimage. This year, we want to focus our fundraising efforts on paying
for a sick pilgrim to travel to Lourdes with the Archdiocese next summer. It costs approximately £800 for each sick pilgrim to come to Lourdes. It is the Sefton Coach’s aim to pay for at least one sick pilgrim in 2013.

We are a theatre company consisting of 6 qualified local actors who have performed on stage in Liverpool and Sefton, plus 2 young amateur actors from the community. BOAT feels learning through theatre helps people understand issues and raises awareness of everyday events that affect our lives. It also helps teach people participation skills, team building and confidence and awareness of their environment. It builds togetherness between the younger and older people in the community. Allerton in Bloom Breathe Easy Liverpool South
Brenda Winslade Breathe Easy Liverpool South is a support group for people with a lung condition. We are a self help support group and share information, support and friendship. We enjoy social events days and meals when we can. We meet once a month, usually the last Monday of the month at the “Lloyds Room” Bridge Chapel, Heath Road, Liverpool, L19 4XR. at 1.30 pm. We have a speaker either medical or someone light hearted to entertain us. We also hold a quiz for fun. Most importantly we can chat to one another in confidence, when sometimes nobody else understands what you are going through with breathing problems. We try to reach out to the South Liverpool Community. Everyone is welcome to join our friendly group whether they are a patient, carer or a family member. We would spend the money to help with our running costs, as we have no steady form of income from fundraising. Some of the Breathe Easy Group members are housebound due to serious illness and find life difficult to cope with at home. They thoroughly enjoy an organised coach trip, for the relaxation and company. It lifts their spirits, makes them smile and they try to forget their health problems just for a day eg. a barge trip where they can see the beautiful countryside and enjoy the fresh air without walking. A breathing problem is so debilitating and restricts normal everyday life. We don’t know what the future holds for our members as we have lost some lovely people due to illness and to give our existing members the chance of happiness and something to look foward to would be brilliant.

British Red Cross Merseyside
Alexis Fairclough The British Red Cross in Merseyside deliver emergency, medical, practical and emotional care for people in their own homes and in local communities in Merseyside. We have 900+ dedicated volunteers in Merseyside, who give their time to help those caught up in emergencies and personal crisis. We train people in life-saving skills, so they can respond to emergencies in their communities. We help people cope after a fire or emergency, providing practical help, advice and comfort. We provide short-term loans of medical equipment, such as wheelchairs, for people with a disability or illness. We encourage young people to become more active in their communities by teaching them about humanitarian values and citizenship. We also provide first aid cover at public events that have included the Sea Odyssey and Liverpool Marathon. We would like to reach more vulnerable groups of people and teach them life saving first aid. We currently have a project working with homeless people across Liverpool and would like to expand on helping this vulnerable group. We would also be using the money to buy vital equipment to help keep our FESS - Fire and Emergency Support vehicle operating which is based at Bootle Fire and Rescue HQ and is called out regularly to assist families during domestic fires across Merseyside.

Castle Kids Fun Club
Nikki Kneale We are a community youth group led by parent volunteers, providing a much needed youth club for
the children of Castlefields and surrounding areas in Runcorn. Our service is targeted towards families; mainly those with primary school aged children as there is a real shortage of activities for this age group in our area. We offer the children a safe place to socialise in a relaxed environment with various art and play resources which they are free to choose from. We would like to use WISH 2012 money to update our youth club equipment; buy some more games, play resources and art/craft materials. If we have money left over we would put this towards either a Christmas party or taking the children to see the Cinderella panto at the Empire.

Cecil Mews Project
Irene Humphreys/Audry Roberts Cecil Mews has turned a dirty, grubby back alleyway into an oasis of flowers, trees, cover areas and places for residents to sit whatever the weather. We have been going since 2006 and have won several wards from RHS Britain in Bloom North West. We were featured in the Echo previously which brought a huge response, plus we’ve appeared on the TV several times including BBC The One Show, Granada Reports and BBC Northwest. We get lots of people from outside the area as well as local people calling round to come in and see the alleyway. We are looking to raise money for the ongoing maintenance of flower containers in Cecil Mews which is roughly 130 hanging baskets, 20 baths, one complete toilet system, several tubs and wall features, renewing shrubs. Some flowers and trees have either died or have been damaged by recent weather and as the back alleyway is at least 120ft long it needs a lot of care and attention.

Childrens Heart Association
Val Frew We are a North West Support group for families who have had a child with a heart condition. We have no paid workers, rely on fundraising done by ourselves, volunteers and the public, we provide support and days out for families to live as normal a life as possible. We meet each month at Ronald McDonald house to support families. We arrange fundraising events for days out for the families giving them the chance to meet other people in similar situations. We also provide some equipment for our local hospitals including Alder Hey and Manchester Children’s Hospital. We have no paid workers, we are friends and family of children with heart conditions. Most people think of older people when thinking of heart conditions but we know there are many children with them. Public support would be very welcome. Depending how much we raise I would love to be able to take the children and families to Alton Towers in 2013 and stay for 1 night. We went this year and the response was fantastic. It gave the families the opportunity to meet one another and share experiences and for the children to meet other children with heart conditions showing that they are not alone.

Wheelhouse I have a son Matthew who is 6 years old and suffers from Autism, Asberges Syndrome and Sensory Disorder Syndrome. When Matthew was diagnosed with these conditions I felt like my whole world had caved in around me. I felt very alone, isolated and scared for our family’s future. I was lucky enough to be put in touch with similar families in the Halewood area and got so much support, friendship and advice from them that I decided to start my own support group here in Kirkby as there was nothing within the area and I didn’t want any other parent to feel the way I did. Our group is small but “familylike” and everyone longs for our fortnightly sessions. We laugh, cry, scream you name it but the difference is we do it and go through it together. No one feels alone anymore. Through the Wish campaign I would love to raise enough funds to enable me to take our little group on a special Christmas day out they will never forget!

Federation of Lydiate Bowling Clubs
Anthony Devine Our Federation consists of five crown green bowling clubs with members from Sefton, Liverpool and parts of West Lancs, but the greens are also available to the public. Our aims are to encourage more active and therefore healthier communities, to provide leisure facilities and to make available and promote comradeship within the community. One way of doing this is to encourage more people to play bowls. It has been proven by Sports England that the lack of facilities is one of the biggest deterrents to participation across all sports. The Federation has no barriers in terms of promoting the facilities, providing the coaching and welcoming new entrants. As well as catering for the growing over-65 population, the Federation runs ‘Taster Days’ by liaising with local schools. There are also school competitions in which one of the prizes is bowls coaching sessions. We hope to raise money for rain shelters at our bowling greens to protect spectators and participants from inclement weather. We have excellent greens, but we are the only ones in the area without such shelters. A recently commissioned survey showed that this is one of the main reasons why more people are not attracted to the greens.

Friday Club
Yasmin Birch The Friday Club has been running since October 2008. It has been a great success and the number of children has risen through word of mouth and is on average 20 children a week. Friday Club accommodates children between the ages of 6-11 and with the newly opened Senior Friday Club, children aged 11+ are now welcome. Our leaders promote social interaction through games and craft. The children’s preferred games include football, bench ball and tag. They also enjoy playing table tennis and snooker. As well as physical games we also provide chilled out games in the form of board games and our favourite Empires game! Even though the club is structured we allow the
children the opportunity to choose what they would like to do. Friday Club would like to make Friday nights even better for our children. We would like to invest in more games equipment and table top activities for the children to use. The Friday Club would also like to give something back to the children this year after all of the support we have received. Our aim would be to take children out on a variety of trips this year.

It also helps to develop social skills and self confidence. Our number one aim is to have fun. We place the children into groups according to school years. We then teach the children routines that will incorporate dance, marching and baton skills. When the children are ready they will be entered into competitions with other troupes, they may be able to do displays. Handicapped Children Pilgrimage Trust - Group 134
Phil Crawford Each year we arrange several weekends for a group of disabled children who have been referred to us by various agencies, schools or friends of our group. We aim to cater for up to 12 disabled children every year. These are kids who would ordinarily would not get the opportunity due to their family’s financial status. Others are families who deserve a short break from the extra responsibilities due to their child’s condition. We top-off these weekends by offering a free week’s holiday for the disabled children to Lourdes in South of France, where we provide 24/7 care and medical support. We provide all the fundraising and meet all the necessary costs and expenses of our work so the parents and families of the children do not have to. This usually requires we reach a fundraising target of £18,000 per year. We also aim to ensure a large proportion of our volunteers and helpers are made up of young people from the Wirral area with a view to giving them some direction and appreciation of the diversity of Wirral’s society. We hope that WISH 2012 funding will pay for one or more child with disabilities, to go on a once in a lifetime fun filled trip to Lourdes.

Certain activities do have age restrictions due to rules of trip organisers not the group itself. Where possible there is no charge for activities. Such was the interest afterwards, we decided to begin training every week. We now have 5 different age groups ranging from 4-16 years old. We have approx 15 coaches who volunteer their time every week. The teams play in various competitions around the North West. Last year the under 10’s team were selected to play in Ireland in front of 90,000 people. The club is open to boys and girls who want to learn a new sport in a safe and healthy environment. Claire Gould We are a not-for-profit organisation with charitable status. We provide full day care to children aged 0-5 years within our nursery and 5-11 years in our afterschool/holiday care service. The setting has been established since 1986 and is funded and run by the parents, we therefore do a lot of fundraising throughout the year to purchase new resources for the children. As the building is very old and large it takes a lot of maintaining as does the garden, therefore a lot of our income is spent on maintaining the premises and on staffing costs. One of our wishes would be to purchase one or two multi seat travel carts so we can take our children for walks around the local area safely in a group. Our setting is on a busy road near to Sefton Park so walking the children down the road can be quite risky. We don’t have access to the large amount of money required to fix this so therefore we would spend any Wish money on our roof repairs. It’s estimated to cost £2500, if we can raise just half we will be able to fix and re open our community computer suite!

L1 Youth Group
Peter Mclean & Danny Costello Our group is called the L1 youth group. We have a trainer called Danny Costello, who teaches the kids boxing, we aim at the age range from 11-18 years. Our main aim is to keep children off the streets and get them fit and healthy and primarily keep them out of gangs and anti-social behaviour, giving them some structure in these sensitive years. It also teaches them to respect other people as well as themselves. We started in a school playing field but have now moved into our own premises. We open 5 nights a week and have an average 10-15 kids a night from all backgrounds. We have support from our local school, the city council and the local police. We don’t charge the children we just ask for a small donation when and if they can. We feel a lot of children could benefit from the Wish money as we give our time for free and are totally reliant on donations to keep the group going. We feel our area has become a more pleasant place to be and we would like to keep this going for future generations. Gym Equipment e.g. Head Guards, gloves, bags, pool table and rent to secure our unit.

Mrs AnnMarie Burns Our playgroup is around three years old and based at Emmanuel Church, Fazakerley. We hold two sessions a week during school term time for children aged 0-5 years and currently have around 35-50 children visiting us each week. We have various play activities; table top toys and puzzles, role play and dressing up, physical activities such as trikes, slides and story or song times. Every week there is a different craft activity such as painting, sticking or playdough and we provide a drink and healthy snack for children and parents/carers. We hold an annual Christmas party for children to enjoy games and a visit by Father Christmas. When funds allow we organise special events such as puppet shows or day trips to farms. We’re looking for WISH 2012 to help with our running costs (eg rent for the church hall, buying new equipment and food for snack time) and to put on a special event for the children such as a puppet show.

Liverpool Elite
Dave Wishman We run a small non profitable branch of Liverpool Elite Taekwondo from a church hall in Everton. We currently have a membership of 30+ students ranging from 5 upwards, most of who are from the local or surrounding areas. It’s not just somewhere to hang out, it’s a place of learning where the children have a sense of belonging and great support. Although Taekwondo is a full contact martial art requiring strength, technical ability and a positive mental attitude, it’s also about respect, integrity and indomitable spirit which are great attributes to have when starting out in life. The club itself has only been running since November 2010 and some children have already started competing, which has really boosted confidence, and built up a deep bond as a united team. But our biggest achievement to date is taking 7 children aged from 5 – 15 to the British Nationals in September. Seven children competed and we came away with 2 gold and 3 silver medals which is an amazing feat considering the children have only been competing at most for 12 months. We would use any funds raised through WISH to help purchase new, modern equipment to replace the second hand, worn and torn apparatus we are currently using.

We also teach dance coordination skills but need new equipment and uniforms. We hope any money collected as part of WISH 2012 will go towards purchasing new uniforms for our majorette troupe and new batons for our dance competitions.

It is just one of the annual projects run by the Liverpool Empire Creative Learning Department. There are a number of ongoing opportunities on offer for groups and individuals of all ages and levels of experience, to work alongside professionals within a professional environment. The Wish Campaign will help us produce a youth ballet production of Peter Pan introducing young people and their friends and family to dance. Entry will be open to everyone between the ages of 11-21 regardless of race, culture, sexual orientation or social or economic background and will also be an opportunity for serious ballet students to get professional experience. The Wish funding will enable us to provide free places to low income families and also tickets for them to attend the performances.

Liverpool Harmonic Gospel Choir
Joyce A Ridpath We are a community choir who are involved in performances of gospel music and singing for a variety of audiences including charity events. We aim to benefit adults from across Merseyside through concerts which include audience participation elements. There is open membership to the choir and we currently have members who are from different parts of Merseyside, including those from diverse backgrounds. The benefits that arise from our choir are: Increased knowledge and appreciation of Gospel music - for both those members of the choir and for members of the public who are attending events. Benefits are increased confidence, team-working and singing skills through the rehearsal and performance of gospel singing at events. Further
benefits include increased health and well-being for members through the opportunity for regular social interaction, through the increased sense of mental and physical well-being that singing can bring. For audiences, through the appreciation and participation of the arts, singing enhances a feeling of well-being. We wish to extend the knowledge and practice of gospel music in order to foster appreciation of gospel music through concerts. For instance, charitable bodies or for such other similar purposes. The WISH 2012 money would enable us to perform more concerts, free of costs for charities such as cancer, hospitals and various fund raising church activities.

Liverpool Homeless Football Club
John Finnigan We provide the opportunity to play football & other sporting events for homeless people across Merseyside. The activities are free and easily accessed by men & women who are marginalised by society. The project is not just about football. Through engagement in physical activity and positive environments, we provide a distraction from ASB and help our players to develop in four key areas. 1.) Health: Physical fitness is improved through participation; players are also given free health check-ups at our events; confidence & self esteem is boosted which improves mental health; referrals to specialist agencies are made. 2.) Training & Employment: Players are given the opportunity to enrol on training courses and, where possible, are assisted into work placements & employment. 3.) Housing: All players are able to access emergency housing services & are given professional advice. 4.) Volunteering: We promote community cohesion & try to breakdown the stigma around homelessness by encouraging players to volunteer with other local projects. We are proud to work closely with 19 hostels across the region. We have reached over 700 homeless people in the last 5 years. We rely solely on volunteers. We are constantly changing lives. WISH 2012 money will fund the support that we provide to homeless people at our events: a nutritious meal, health check up, training in life skills, counselling service.

Liverpool P.D.S.A Fundraising Group
Sylvia Kearns The Liverpool PDSA Fundraising Group is only a small group but every fundraising event we organise, we try to make it fun and informative. PDSA strongly believe in responsible pet ownership and as a group we promote this. To raise funds we organise fun dog shows and hold stalls at different events. We give support to people on low income such as the elderly, disabled and unemployed. Most pets are important members of a family, giving comfort, support and security as well as companionship. They deserve the best medical treatment available when they are ill and their owners should not have to worry about how they can afford to pay vet bills. Our two wonderful PDSA hospitals achieve this and I am very proud to support them and try to help towards the £1.5 million per year it costs to run our two hospitals (without any government funding). Our two Liverpool pet-aid hospitals are the busiest pet-aid hospitals nationally seeing more than 300 pets every day. The two hospitals are very modern, well equipped with highly trained staff, so as a group any donations we receive from WISH 2012 will go towards animal comforts such as blankets, towels, cotton wool and pet food.

Liverpool Seafarers Centre
John Wilson Each day the Liverpool Seafarers visit all vessels berthed in the River Mersey and Manchester Ship Canal and engage with crew. Crew are from developing countries, Philippines, India, Ukraine and China. We take printed news from the home country. At sea for weeks at a time communication with family and friends is not possible. At the centre we have a bank of internet cafe and telephones which offer seafarers the opportunity to catch up with family at home. Life on board is difficult with loneliness and isolation being common. Through our visits we are able to offer a distraction from the monotony by offering a hand of friendship and conversation. Seafarers are an invisible workforce slipping in and out of the ports as unseen visitors. As an island nation we are dependent upon seafarers who bring 95% of all goods which we consume on a daily basis. We urgently need to replace a minibus which was the target of vandalism and fire damage.

Liverpool Six Community Association
John Roberts We are a community organisation operating in the Everton area servicing the immediate community. We currently run a luncheon club for the elderly/ vulnerable residents in the area accompanied by bingo, gentle exercise sessions and each Friday we have a card craft class for the over 60’s. We also have a project called Silver Surfers which is a computer class for the over 55s. The group has one paid member of staff and the rest is solely run by volunteers. If we were fortunate enough we would spread the money across projects as most recently we have had a reduction in funding from the Council Resource Unit. Therefore this would be spent on subsiding the Luncheon Club and the Card Craft Class as at present we do not recieve funding for materials. This is a very theraputic session to all concerned.

Mrs Catherine Bland The Maghull & District Women’s Club meet at Maghull Town Hall every Tuesday evening (and have done so for over 25 years), and we have approximately 40 members. Although we are a registered charity ourselves, we still enjoy doing as much as we can to help others in our community and hold the usual “bring and buy” events, raffles etc to support local people with an annual cheque presentation with buffet or hot pot. We keep in touch with all of our members sending good wishes and flowers if anyone is ill. We enjoy talks and demonstrations at the club which help to keep us in the know and together as a community. Bob Jenkins We run a collection service to round up locally unwanted tools & sewing machines and bring them back to life. We clean them, fix them and get them ready for use. We train each other in all aspects of tool refurbishment and use, refitting and practical skills. We are currently recruiting to widen our happy gang, which has a great family atmosphere. We also have a retail section “Make It Sell” which helps us generate funds and make us sustainable. Our presence in Cambridge Walks, which has been a local eyesore until recently, has already attracted lots of interest from businesses wanting to re-populate the almost empty Victorian shopping arcade. We will put any Wish money granted towards buying the specialist tool refurbishing equipment that we need to ensure our collection of donated tools & sewing machines can be refurbished to a very high standard. We can then expand our workshop activities to train younger people (than our 84 year old founder! all ages welcome) in tool refurbishment, DIY, crafts, sewing etc. Every member of our organisation contributes on a voluntary basis and we all like to pass on our skills to others. We are fast becoming a hub in the local community, and wish to branch out to help others with practical skills. Wish Money will help us to MakeIt(Workshop)!!!

Townsend Morris Dancers Moonbeams Parent and Carers Support Group
Yvonne Adamson Moonbeams are a peer support group. We are run by parents of children who have a disability for the benefit of those children and their parents and siblings. Our aim is to help parents to cope with the day to day challenges of having a child with a disability, in addition to working with service providers to improve the lives of all involved. Our meetings are very informal and free to attend. Parents are able to chat and share information and experiences in a relaxed, friendly environment over a cup of coffee with like minded parents. From time to time, we also invite guest speakers and support agencies to our meetings to share information, events and opportunities to access support for disabled children and their carers. We listen. We care. We don’t judge. We passionately wish to reach more families who feel isolated and are struggling to cope. We wish to purchase specialised play equipment for the after school club we run for children with special needs. We would also use the Wish money to fund outings and/or holidays for the children and their primary carers. The money would also be used to arrange carer presentations by guest speakers who can provide specialist knowledge and support relating to all aspects of disability. The money would allow us to promote our group more widely and reach more ‘hidden carers’.

Multiple Sclerosis Society Wirral Branch
Karen Parsons The Wirral Branch has nearly 300 members and we think there are about another three hundred affected people on the Wirral who are not members. We support all people who are affected by Multiple Sclerosis; the person with MS, relatives, friends, work colleagues, their employer. We also have a very active Fundraising Team who can often be seen inside and outside of local shops in their bright orange t-shirts, hoping to fill their collection buckets! We also hold discos, barn dances, sponsored walks etc. We need to raise £40,000 per year in order to keep the branch going; some of the things the funds are required for are: the day centre running costs, transport and travel, fuel, physio, printing of the newsletter, postage etc. The branch is run completely by volunteers and if we were to be lucky enough to receive anything from Liverpool ECHO’s “WISH”, we would be absolutely delighted! We would spend this year’s money on some of our initiatives, which work very well indeed, in helping keep the members able to exercise
their muscles and to keep in touch with other people who are experiencing the same problems as they are and making new friends. These initiatives are Aqua aerobics held at Total Fitness Prenton twice a week, Wellbeing - two classes every Wednesday and Tai Chi every Monday evening; these classes are held at the Hope Centre Pensby.

Steve Devine We offer children the chance to play football and enjoy the game, through various channels, whether it be from our soccer school for children aged 4 upwards, or one of the various teams we have set up. No child is ever turned away and we try and ensure that all children get to play where they will build confidence. We give them an activity that teaches them to be part of a team, meet new friends and have fun. The group is run by volunteers who all give up their spare time to run the teams and help at the soccer school. This fosters a real family feeling with both adults and children meeting new friends through the activities that we do. We are part of the FA charter standard accreditation which says we do things right and try to ensure we have qualified coaches in place to teach the children, which means they all attend FA courses. We do not target children and all are welcome to play the game, starting in our soccer school. Money raised by WISH 2012 will be used to fund children’s football activities including teams aged from 4-9, football kits, football coaching, days out with the kids, treats, summer tournaments, winter clothing to keep them warm in the winter.

Doris Murphy Our group consists of people with physical and learning disabilities. We meet twice a month on Mondays (7pm-9pm) in a room in Our Lady of the Assumption which is provided free of charge by our parish priest. The club is organised by 5 leaders and 8 volunteers. Transport to and from the venue is provided by group leaders and volunteers. We provide recreation with board games, jigsaws etc. We also make greeting cards for special occasions. We have refreshments for the group and provide presents and cakes for members birthdays. Our nights out during the year include bowling, pantomime, Blackpool lights (inc coach hire) and going to restaurants (especially at Christmas). We also find it necessary to hire taxis when we have our nights out. We would use the WISH 2012 funds to provide recreation and days out for the group, it would hopefully help us to go on our annual trip to Walsingham in May which unfortunately had to be cancelled this year.

Old Swan Youth Club
Franchessca Noponen We work with young people aged 5 – 15 years old providing youth and play provision. We focus on social and personal development and we implement these through informal education and play. The programme that we provide allows young people to engage in positive diversionary activities and reject anti social behaviour as well as addressing any issues and needs that they have. We also offer educational support during after school sessions which offer young people additional support with their school curriculum. If we are lucky enough to recieve some funding from yourselves we will be looking at trying to refurbish some of our rooms and possibly get a new floor in the gym which is a very popular room with our young people but pops up when it rains. Our primary concern though is keeping the centre open for young people, their families and the local community to have access to and provide advice and support so ensuring that we have the money to cover our core costs. In March 2011 we saw what could have been the closure of our centre due to funding cuts. This caused an outrage with many of the parents and carers of the young people who attend the centre as well as members of the local community asking what would they do without us. It was apparent that this centre is of great value to the young people who use it and to the community it is in. With the help of a core group of volunteers and the local community we have been keeping this provision in place for young people and the community.
we have entertainment including hot pot suppers and social evenings. We have outings where we will go to different places, we usually have three per year and a Christmas party. We also own the club and therefore we need to maintain it and complete repairs. We need a new PA system so any money from WISH 2012 will go towards that.

Angela Pearlman The Prescot East area of Knowsley suffered a loss of Play activities for young people, due to Council cutbacks. A number of local residents expressed a desire to work with young people in a voluntary capacity. In January this year we opened a community run play service for children aged 4-11yrs, as an after school club and an informal support network for their parents. We do our own fund raising to sustain our group by doing face painting and other activities at local events,we also rely on donations from other organisations i.e. Mayors charities etc. Our aim is to provide an interest for the children by way of activity groups, botanical creations and adventure excursions. We have a membership of 30+ children and constant enquiries from other parents but due to limited funding and assistance we are compelled to keep our membership small. In the spring we hope to start our new gardening project in the grounds of Bryer Environmental Group’s Park. With help from the Wish Campaign we could acheive this. Our overall ambition is to encourage children to take a pride in their environment.

Chris White We have become the largest children’s football Club in St Helens with over 250 children both boys and girls from the age of 4+. We are from a deprived area in Merseyside and we pride ourselves in offering fully qualified coaches for a minimal cost for the benefit of local children. Our aim is to give the children help and guidance for their future. With WISH 2012 money we would buy much needed equipment for all our new 5 teams balls, cones, mini soccer goals, bibs, respect barriers and also some coaching equipment.
Pat Roberts We work with vulnerable children whose mums have escaped domestic violence. Many of our children have witnessed the abuse that went on in their family. They are often very troubled by what they’ve seen and need a lot of support from our staff. The families often have to flee their home with nothing but what they stand up in. This means most of the children don’t even have any toys. At Christmas time we like to try and raise money to buy them some toys and take them out for the day.
Parklands Parents Forum
Stephen Brown The Under 9s football team is fully self-funding for its own football kits, training kits, training facilities and equipment. The club is independent from the main Prescot Cables teams although it carries the club’s name it receives no funding from the main club to support our development and our training of young people in football. At the moment we are fully reliant on parents’ subs on a monthly basis which are used for booking pitches and paying referee fees each week. In addition we have a yearly sponsered football match for dads v mums which enables us to have a small party for the team at Christmas time. Our group is currently open to boys and girls aged 8 from the Knowsley area. We would be looking at spending any monies from the WISH 2012 campaign in purchasing football kits, winter training clothing for all young people in the club. We would be using funding to support all young people to continue to train and learn football through the winter using indoor facilities in the local area, plus on purchasing training equipment to support the development of our team.

Edward Stuart Daly Roma FC have been established for 44 years within the Norris Green Area. Roma FC have since given many young people in the area the chance to showcase their football ability. Over the years the club has had teams from as young as the age of seven years right up to the men’s open age team, at one stage having fourteen teams up and running. It would be fantastic to be able to achieve this again by giving the young people within the Norris Green area the opportunity to channel their energy and give a sense of belonging by being part of a club. We would use any funds raised through the Wish campaign to invest in sporting equipment e.g. kits, balls, nets, training equipment.

Rutland Morris Dancers
Diane Morson Our group consists of approx 50 girls from the age of two upward to eighteen. We are based in the Liverpool 6 area which is a very deprived part of of the city. We have over many years, with the assistance of parents, local community and help from the council police and church, prevented young girls becoming involved in gangs, drugs and other anti-social behaviour. We do this by harnessing their natural energy and channelling it into dancing. We promote a healthy active community and once the girls are part of the group they are dedicated and stay with us. We provide a vibrant alternative. Sadly, like all community-based organisations at the moment, we are always desperate for funds. As we’re based in a deprived area we cannot always rely on subs or other fundraising activities such as raffles. We have a wonderful family atmosphere which goes a long way to ensuring the less fortunate do not get excluded and we all strive to raise as many funds as possible. We see the Wish campaign as a chance to hopefully get some costumes including dresses, socks etc for all the troupes and help with transport costs which is one of our real headaches. We take the girls out every Sunday to various locations to compete against other troupes and we are desperate to ensure we can keep on doing this. The WISH list gives us a chance to keep going, to keep looking forward and also to realise we are not on our own in the endeavour we are trying to do.

St James Pre School
Paul Denny St James pre school is a non profit organisation that provides care and education for up to 45 children per day and has done so for well over forty years. We have had a really bad year last year as we received an inadequate grading during an Ofsted inspection. We were given six months to turn things around or possibly face closure. The staff team, with the help of myself the newly appointed leader of the Pre-school, have worked tirelessly to improve the setting and the service we provide for the children and their parents and we were extremely proud that we received a good grading with elements of outstanding during our return Ofsted inspection. We aim to continue to develop our setting and continue to make improvements wherever possible however the financial impact of improvements made so far have hit us hard and as we are a non profit organisation we will need to rely on fundraising events and securing funding from outside agencies such as the Liverpool ECHO WISH Campaign to continue. We would like to develop the outdoor space in our setting. We would like to be able to provide activities and equipment that will enable the children to develop in all seven areas of learning and development outdoors as well as in. The space is also used by a number of other community based groups and activities such as nit and natter, scouts and the boys brigade and we feel that they could also benefit from the use of a more appropriate and developed outdoor space.

Every token counts Stage One 2000 Musical Youth Theatre
Jenny King Stage One 2000 is based at a local community centre and is run by four volunteer teachers who share a love of musical theatre. It is open to everyone between the age of 8yrs -18yrs, no experience necessary, our fees are kept to the minimum, relying on funding, grants and the word “Please!”. We aim to give our members confidence, enjoyment, movement skills, vocal training, friends and above all “fun” on a Sunday morning. Many ex members come back to help so we must be doing something right. This year we are performing Seussical the Musical at the Little Theatre in Birkenhead. It is based on the famous books by Dr Seuss about The Cat in the Hat. In order to create the magic we will need lots of paint, timber and building materials to make our scenery, and exciting posters to attract the audience that this talented group really deserve.

The children at SBS love to take part in competitions and regularly do extremely well at these with a wonderful collection of trophies being won. We also hold our own school show for the children to showcase their talents to their families which are always great nights to remember. We love to take part in charity events, recently taking part in a show to raise money for Motor Neurone Disease and held a charity car wash raising money for Cancer Research. At SBS we aim to keep costs down to a minimum for parents of our children so hold fundraising events such as raffles and supermarket bag packing days to raise money for costumes and other much needed items. We would love to take part in this years Liverpool ECHO WISH campaign and wish all the nominated good causes the best of luck! We would love to be able to help pay for the cost of dance costumes and accessories for the children to enter competitions and charity shows, this will help keep the cost down for our parents. Stick ‘n’ Step
children come to our centre twice a week to learn how to crawl, sit up, stand, walk, talk, and even play football. We help them achieve these milestones through conductive education, which teaches methods for overcoming the obstacles encountered in everyday life by those with motor disabilities. Along the way our children make friends, gain greater self-esteem and confidence, and learn life skills such as cooking that will help them lead a more independent life. Children at Stick ‘n’ Step achieve far more than ever predicted because they are motivated to do the best that they can. We also provide support and information for the carers of our children as well as a place for them to meet other parents and discuss the issues particular to those with a disabled child. We will spend this year’s Wish money on the costs of providing our services free of charge to the 70 children who come to us twice a week. Each child’s place costs £3,500 annually.

Stronger Communities Initiative Assembly
Anthony Niblock We are community based and we want to improve our area dramatically. As a community group we have paid for the local football cage to be fixed. We held a jubilee party for 150 children. We work in partnership with the police, local housing agencies and our community to turn it around and give the younger children pride in where they live. At the moment we have a piece of land that is a major blight on the community. We are in the process of securing a lease from the council so that we as a community can redevelop the land and give the children a play park. We also aim to put a children’s market garden which will also be accessed by Sure Start and two local schools where they can learn to grow their own flowers and vegetables. We are also hoping to build a seating area for the elderly residents. But like everything else it also comes down to funding. We have had some success with only small amounts but these add up. We would also like to make a contribution to a local boy Aaron Bretland who is 13 and is a Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. He attends team GB and trains for TDK Academy in Liverpool. But is desperate for sponsors so that he can compete internationally so that he can get his ranking. His nan and mum make wonderful cup cakes and sell them in the community but they need help desperately.

The Autism Promise
Sarah Smithson Stick ‘n’ Step is a registered charity that transforms the lives of children with cerebral palsy. Seventy
Debra Sweeney The Autism Promise (established in January 2012) was born from the desire of two autistic boys’ parents to secure a future for them, but to also help
other parents/carers with the same needs. Anybody who cares for a child with autism will at some point have to deal with the question of who will take care of them when the carer is no longer able to do so. The Autism Promise (TAP) is about a promise made to our boys that we would secure a home and someone to take care of them for the rest of their lives. We also make this promise to other parents/ carers that we will help to achieve that wish for them too. Vision: To create a home where our children will be safe, supported and encouraged to be who they are, where their differences are respected and their abilities are recognised and time is taken to step into their world rather that expecting them to always come into ours. WISH 2012 money would be used to promote the awareness of Autism and to help towards respite for younger people and their families/carers.

The Liverpool Academy of Arts
June Lornie We are a charity registered (1114232) art gallery for Merseyside people run entirely by ten enthusiastic volunteers. We have been in existence, in our current form, since 1989 currently operating in the centre of Liverpool. Throughout the year we work to:• Encourage Merseyside artists, largely amateur, fostering their talents by providing a platform for them to meet, exhibit their work, gain confidence and grow artistically. • Raise the awareness of both visiting tourists and Merseysiders to the artistic talent present in the people of Merseyside. Although a charity ourselves we support other local charities. We do this through a series of around eighteen exhibitions each year. Finally we run three or more open exhibitions each year. These usually have a theme and artists can exhibit up to three works. There is no selection; all work submitted is displayed and can result in over a hundred artists participating in a single exhibition. WISH 2012 money will be spent staging an open exhibition in the spring of next year, eligible to all artists with no selection criteria, on the theme ‘How Does Your Garden Grow’. Any additional money will be put towards the refurbishment of our picture gallery and to improving the lighting for exhibits.

The St. Peter’s Singers
The Liverpool Academy of Arts
Adrian Griffiths The St Peter’s Singers and Orchestra began in 1976 when a group of enthusiastic singers and instrumentalists gained the support of the Rector of St Peter’s Church in Heswall to form a choir and orchestra, using the church facilities for practice and St Peter’s Church as their concert venue. Over the years the choir has widened its appeal and now draws its members and audiences from across Wirral. The Choir gives two main concerts a year (in the Church of the Good Shepherd, Heswall) at Easter and at Christmas. However we often have additional rehearsals during the summer leading to a further concert. Our heritage is a community choir for Heswall and we are deeply appreciative of the support this receives. We are excited by the prospect of widening our appeal, interacting with other choral and orchestral groups and attracting new friends from a wider area. We want to hold training days
to help to show people how great singing is and we want to encourage young people to take up group singing - WISH 2012 will help us to achieve this.

Angela Murphy Tomorrow’s Women Wirral (TWW) is a community centre based in the Birkenhead area. TWW provides a vital service for women from all conceivable backgrounds, offering a safe, friendly, all-female environment from which women can access workshops on subjects such as healthy eating, anxiety management, budgeting and employment skills. The centre is an especially valuable resource for women in vulnerable circumstances, including ex-offenders, substance abusers and victims of domestic abuse. Wish money would contribute to the cost of developing a garden on the centre site, which would include vegetable patches, beds for seasonal flowers, water feature and picnic area. The garden would be tended by the women who attend, volunteer and work at the centre, thus allowing those involved to acquire new skills, experience the positive impact on health and well-being that gardening has been proven to produce, feel the satisfaction that can be derived from growing one’s own food and benefit from the social and teambuilding element of participating in an initiative with tangible results.

The girls practice every Tuesday and dance out in competition every Saturday between April and October. This is keeping the girls from hanging around the streets and ensures they keep fit. To take the girls to competition we have to hire transport every week which is expensive and the girls need to dance out in troupe costume. We do our own fundraising to help with the cost. At the end of the year we like to reward the girls with trophies and medals for all their effort and hard work they have put in for the year. Verity Rhodes We provide social and leisure activities and run an information and signposting service. We are keen to revitalise our community. Over the past 2 years we have refurbished a derelict church hall into what is fast becoming a community hub bringing people together and reducing social exclusion. We want the less fortunate to be privy to the same benefits as the more affluent in society. We hope that WISH 2012 can help us to develop the land at the side of the church to become an outdoor adventure play area, soccer cage, climbing wall with skateboarding ramps.

Vintage Radio
Will Redfearn Many mature listeners felt that their tastes were not catered for and the music they liked and the issues they felt were important were often overlooked. Many of us were enticed into Vintage radio by some articles in the Wirral based free newspapers inviting anyone who was interested in coming along to a meeting. From this inaugural meeting in August 2008 Vintage Radio was born. We’re now self funded via various grants and awards and kind and generous help from many sources. Vintage needed people who could create and present programmes, market the station and sort out the technical issues and design and put together a website. We have been broadcasting 7 days a week for 12 hours a day on the internet. Vintage Radio has trained well over 30
mature people who were completely new to radio. They have learnt many broadcasting skills so they can now create and present their own live shows. Vintage Radio aims to entertain and inform. We hope that WISH 2012 can support our continued work, recording people’s history and memories through the internet and will encourage mature people to become broadcasters and programme producers.

Vision Support Activity Club
Ian Calder We are an independent Registered Charity, No. 520130, managed by a committee and ran by trained voluntary staff for young people aged 12 to 18 years within the Wirral area. Our aim is to provide an organisation where young people, irrespective of race, sex or ability, can develop the qualities of self-discipline and leadership together with a sense of responsibility to themselves, their peers and to the community. By offering fun activities four nights per week and at weekends with additional activities during the school holidays, we are able to educate the cadets into becoming better citizens by tackling the problems of anti-social behaviour, street disorder, and addressing the problems of bullying, drug and alcohol abuse in young people. Twice each year, we try to raise funds to give 12 Cadets the opportunity to participate in offshore training aboard one of the 3 Sea Cadet Vessels, supervised by an adult and trained crew who allow them to practice the skills they have learned in the classroom. This offers Cadets a way of experiencing activities whilst gaining qualifications which many young people from other areas take for granted. The experience also helps to build their self-confidence and self-esteem.

Every token counts time. This year I haven’t been able to take the girls to all the competitions because of lack of funds for the coach, they have really missed not being able to compete every week. We are a very close troupe and we look out for each other and enjoy spending time together. It is at the stage now where we can no longer afford to keep Wirral dancers going unless we get some funding to help us keep going, it will break the girls hearts if we have to end. We would spend any WISH 2012 money on travel costs to get to competitions or to buy new dresses and a new music system.

We have enrolments approximately every 6 weeks and welcome men and women. No experience is necessary and we have limited kit to loan. Our aims and objectives are to enable and empower our team members, encouraging personal growth, optimise health fitness well being and ability within a supportive environment whilst becoming a respected and successful sports team. Our team ethos is ‘For the greater good of all’ - in all our endeavours we strive to have an inclusive positive impact on all our members, Roller Derby, our community, and society. We want to raise money through WISH 2012 to be able to purchase kit for potential members to use who want to join, but can’t because they can’t afford skates pads and helmets.

Woolton Drama Group
Zoran Blackie Woolton Drama is south Liverpool’s oldest amateur dramatics group, bringing accessible and entertaining shows to our community for over 55 years. We welcome members regardless of experience or background to get involved in theatre, aged 17 to 70, to work as a team and put on great shows. Our productions are often the first ever live theatre experience for audience members, especially with our forthcoming January 2013 production of Grimm Tales. We don’t do divas – we are fully aware that we are doing this for enjoyment and this communicates to our audience – but we do our best to put on professional standard shows. We target people from all backgrounds but where people have particular skills – from acting and singing to technical stuff and costume – we have great opportunities to build up their experience, meet new people and demonstrate their skills. We put on at least three shows a year, and we would love to do more, but are restricted to money we generate from ticket sales and members subs. The WISH campaign will hopefully give us the springboard to be able to take shows to other community groups, recruit more members and keep the group going for another fifty years!
