Everyone’s a winner with Wish
E
VERYONE’S a winner as the final figures for the ECHO’s Wish Campaign are published today. From the well-organised community groups that have collected tokens by the thousand to the little groups that have only managed a few hundred, everyone has arrived at the end of
the campaign better off than they were before. A last minute rush saw a total of more than four million tokens arriving at the ECHO offices as the campaign closed. It took three days to count them all, but a winner eventually emerged – the Christ Church Youth and Community Centre in Bootle – just a whisker ahead of
the Performance Studios in Kirkby. Litza Gorman, the ECHO’s senior marketing executive running the campaign, said: “'I'm personally overwhelmed by the amount of support that our Wish campaign has had. “For more than 130 years, the ECHO has been at the heart of the Merseyside community and still

CHRIST CHURCH YOUTH AND COMMUNITY CENTRE
F
ROM the moment the Wish Campaign tokens started arriving at the ECHO offices in Old Hall Street, Christ Church Youth and Community Centre in Bootle looked like champion collectors. And when the final totals were worked out, the Christ Church team were every bit as good as they promised to be,
collecting 68,504 tokens in all – nearly 2,000 more than their nearest rivals and earning them £807.30 from the £50,000 overall pot of money. “We’re absolutely made up,” said centre manager Jenny Coates when the ECHO broke the news to her. “I just want to say thanks to everyone who helped. “They were wonderful, all the
shops and schools helped locally, even Mike at the local police station.” The centre has been running for over 20 years, hosting a range of activities from youth groups, an after-school club, over-50s activities, volunteering, disability groups and accredited courses like the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards. “As soon as I saw it in the
ECHO, I filled in the form and posted it off,” said Jenny. “We are a charity, and when we apply for funding, it’s mainly to cover things like staff wages. But it will be great to have some money from the Wish campaign to spend on the actual buildings, and also on general things like cooking equipment for the kids, playing equipment and things like that.”
PERFORMANCE STUDIOS

FUN RAISERS: The Zoe’s Place Riverside Walk raised cash for the West Derby Children’s Hospice WELL DESERVED: Liverpool and Everton legends Phil Thompson and Howard Kendall present a mini bus to Performance Studios WEEKS of hard work organising the collecting of tokens today paid off for Performance Studios in Kirkby, as it became the second most successful group taking part in the ECHO’s Wish campaign. With nearly 67,000 tokens in the bag, the Studios will be collecting a cheque for £786.63 from the Wish fund – and a fifth of that is all down to the efforts of one girl. “We got all the local shops and the taxi
places behind us,” said Pauline Donovan from Performance Studios. “We organised a competition to see who could bring in the most tokens and one girl, Laura Morgan, was way ahead with 14,000 tokens on her own.” The Studios are a community based voluntary group, with 230 children a week attending dancing and singing lessons, with charges kept as low as possible and no child being turned away. “We put on a couple
of shows a year for the whole community to attend with packed houses of 500 a night at our local civic suite,” added Pauline. “We also dance and perform in the local area for anyone who’s doing anything within the community.” Money raised from the ECHO’s Wish campaign will go towards keeping the Studios’ minibus serviced and insured, and keeping the cost of lessons down to an affordable level.
ZOE’S PLACE
A CO-ORDINATED campaign by staff and volunteers at Zoe’s Place Children’s Hospice in West Derby resulted in more than 63,000 tokens coming in, taking the centre into fourth place with a cheque for £746.82 on its way. Zoe's Place is a pioneering baby hospice in Liverpool for small children under five with life-threatening or life-limiting conditions that demand 24-hour care. Open since the 1990s, it is the model for Zoe's Place hospices in Middlesbrough and Coventry, but the original Liverpool operation is now planning a refurbishment.
“It means we can expand our service once we've finished after work starts next month,” said fundraising manager Carol Kirkham, who pulled together a team of volunteers and staff to collect the tokens. “Our volunteers were just fantastic, they coordinated a great campaign,” she said. “Members of the public got involved and we got so many tokens sent to us from our supporters. “Everybody worked together and we just got a great response – and then we had a lovely afternoon of cutting them out and sticking them down.”

ACMillan North Junior Football Club has a double role, to work with children in deprived areas of north Liverpool to encourage them to take part in various sports, and also to raise funds for the Macmillan cancer care nurses. “We’ve got 11 teams in all, and we play in the Scotland Road League on pitches at Everton Park and in Vauxhall,” said Kerry Stukley from the club. Like many sports clubs, the biggest costs are transport and the hire of training facilities – it costs the Macmillan club £400 a month to hire indoor training facilities over the winter. Their efforts have brought in just over 48,000 tokens, which means that another £567.46 will be added to club funds to help the youngsters keep their teams going.

Meetings usually take place quarterly, often with guests from organisations like the police, fire brigade and community wardens. The fundraising effort has produced 40,088 tokens, raising some £472.43.

BROOKLYN BELLES MORRIS TROUPE

T
HE BROOKLYN Belles Morris Troupe in Huyton is a relative newcomer in comparison to some of the other Mersey morris groups, having been founded in 2000, but still has 30 dancers from three to 45. “It’s the transport that’s our biggest costs,” said joint founder Tracy Barratt.
“It’s costing us £5,500 to hire a bus for a season. We can get money for new dresses, but without the bus we can’t get to competitions.” Her group’s efforts have produced over 40,000 tokens, earning the Troupe £480.96. “It’s been really hard and I’d like to give a big thank-you to all who helped,” said Tracy.
STANLEY OVER-50s ASSOCIATION TIME was that the term “over-50s” conjured up memories of the wartime generation, shaped by the memories of six years of conflict. But times have moved on, and the younger over-50 of today is as likely to have been a punk rocker, a teenage club-goer at Eric’s or glued to a television set watching Liverpool’s first European Cup triumph in Rome in 1977. The Stanley Area Over-50s Association (SOFA) has certainly got that in mind when it organises activities in its area of Liverpool. There’s not a bingo night to be had, nor a tea dance. “We’re a totally voluntary group that started off as a residents association for the people of Stanley and Old Swan,” said Jim Walsh of SOFA. “But we’ve changed over the years, and now we try to promote inclusion for older people. We organise all types of activities for them, swimming, walking, holidays, you name it. But everything we do has to be fun, and it has to ALMOST GROWN: SOFA is now as likely to include be achievable.” regulars at legendary Mathew Street nightclub Eric’s as the Everything the SOFA does established ‘wartime generation’ in funded from its own coffers, and that paid off when it It all paid off with a total of “That is an amazing result,” started to organise a campaign 51,785 tokens collected, said Jim. to brings in the Wish tokens. making SOFA the number “We’ve got a holiday group “Family, friends, they all helped seven among Wish collectors going off this week and it will out” said Jim. and bringing in £610.27. be a real help to us.”

CLOSE KNIT: Millennium is like ‘one big family’, says original member Susan Holding
MILLENNIUM MORRIS DANCERS HUYTON’S Millennium Morris Dancers are coming up to their 40th birthday, with the group now in its third generation of dancers. “There are some still involved from way back in 1972 when we started,” said Susan Holding of the Millennium group. “My daughters are in their 40s and instructing now. They grew up with it and it’s like one big family.” The dancers compete every week during the spring and
summer in competitions across the North West and North Wales. The tea dancing teaches the girls dedication, reliability and respect for one another and themselves, and also boosts self-esteem, as all children can make progress. In the late autumn the Millennium group is planning an away trip to a big contest in Pontin's, and it is the costs of events like this that can be kept down thanks to the Wish money – they were the sixth
highest collectors, with 54,460 tokens worth £641.79. “Everyone pestered their neighbours, friends and relatives,” said Susan. “The people on the estate in Huyton have been really good – young lads kept posting tokens through my door and things like that.” Transport costs are among the biggest single item in the group’s budget, with bus hire running at £310 every single Sunday the group is competing.
