Theatre for everyone
Two great theatres. One creative heart.
“Tell me, tell me the truth of who I am.”
oEDIPUS by steven Berkoff (After SOPHOCLES) 4
The Gods are angry and one man’s blind ambition to appease them unearths a hideous secret. As the pieces of the puzzle come together it soon becomes clear that his only success will be in sealing his own tragic fate. Writer, director and actor Steven Berkoff’s adaptation of Sophocles’ greatest Greek tragedy promises a stirring theatrical experience.

BUTTERFLY DREAMING TOUR
JUAN MARTÍN Juan Martín returns to Liverpool following his mesmerising live performance in Cut to the Chase’s 2008 production of Blood Wedding at the Playhouse for which he also composed the score. We are delighted to welcome him to the Everyman with this solo performance. “Juan Martín is spine-tingling and exciting.” Liverpool Daily Post on Blood Wedding
Juan Martín is a celebrated virtuoso of the flamenco guitar who has been voted into the top three guitarists in the world by US magazine Guitar Player. He was honoured to play for Picasso’s 90th birthday celebrations, has performed at international festivals from Montreux to Hong Kong and at the First World Guitar Congress in the USA. As a recording artist he has produced eighteen CDs and worked on two films. “A giant of the flamenco guitar tradition.” The Times 6
Henri Oguike, one of the UK’s most inventive choreographers, makes a welcome return to the Playhouse following Green in Blue and Little Red in 2007. This time he presents a stunning new triple bill performed by five handpicked world-class dancers.

Unusual and intense, Freq is inspired by an inquisitive playfulness, incorporating a set with running water. Point of Contact bears all the hallmarks of Oguike’s choreography; sensuality, beauty and sublime movement are laced together with Bach’s lyrical suites for solo cello. Butterfly Dreaming, a full Company work, draws inspiration from the Far East. Crafted on Chinese philosopher-poet Chuang-Tzu’s ‘Butterfly Dream’ and set to the music of Tan Dun’s dramatic ‘Ghost Opera,’ recorded by the Kronos Quartet. This is contemporary dance at its most thrilling and enjoyable. 7

CHARLIE AND LOLA’S BEST BESTEST PLAY Based on the Characters Created by
Lauren Child Adapted by Jonathan Lloyd
Fringe First Winner – 2009 Gregory had fifty seven letters to write. He’d never written that many letters, not in one go. In fact, he’d never written a single letter and it was taking significantly longer than he’d anticipated. He’d started, full of optimism, curiously enough, at 9 am and now here he was 8 hours later half way through letter twenty four. He glanced at his watch and then at the noose hanging over his head.
I have this little sister Lola. She is small and very funny…

Gregory sighed. Had he known how long suicide letters take, he thought, he wouldn’t have cancelled the milk for the morning. The story of a death postponed by life. “Eccentric, far fetched and unbelievably good.” The Telegraph 8

Will Lola ever tidy her room and will Charlie get Lola to sleep, even though she is not sleepy and will not go to bed? The Tigers want their bedtime milk, the Dancing Dogs have borrowed Lola’s pyjamas – not to mention the Ogre in the wardrobe! Who’d have known there were so many problems to overcome? Don’t miss everyone’s favourite brother and sister, Charlie and Lola, in their extremely everso wonderful stage show! The stars of the hit BBC TV series and books by Lauren Child are brought to life by a magical mix of puppets, live action and music. “Magic from start to finish.” Herald Scotland Charlie and Lola ™ and © Lauren Child 2005. THE GRUFFALO’S CHILD
The songs of Elvis Costello lead us through the life and times of his female counterpart… Elsie! Written by Lou Dalgleish and Michael Weston King, this is the story of Elsie Costello, who’s story strangely mirrors that of her male counterpart. Featuring such classics as Accidents Will Happen, Shipbuilding, Alison, I Want You and many more, Lou Dalgleish’s (Elsie’s) breathtaking vocals are accompanied by Michael Weston King’s superb guitar-vocals, and the phenomenal keyboard skills of Gladstone Wilson.
The Gruffalo said that no Gruffalo should, ever set foot in the deep dark wood... One wild and windy night the Gruffalo’s child ignores her father’s warning and tiptoes out into the snow. After all, the Big Bad Mouse doesn’t really exist... does he?

TINY VOLCANOES By Laurence Wilson Directed by James Grieve Video Design Tim Brunsden Light and Sound Design Xenia Bayer
Directed by Sonia Ritter
A truly remarkable and sparkling piece of theatre which celebrates an extraordinary episode in Britain’s history – the Women’s Land Army of World War II. This delightful and often deeply touching play charts the personal journeys of four women who sign up to become Land Girls, determined to work endless, backbreaking hours on farms across the country in a bid to do their best for the War Effort. Based on hundreds of letters from and interviews with the original Land Girls along with songs from the period, Lilies On The Land is a revealing, funny, wonderfully moving and utterly captivating portrait of some of Britain’s pluckiest, unsung heroes. Simply unmissable, this is theatre at its most memorable.
The Great British Bulldog has been usurped by snarling hybrids. The bowler hat has morphed into the hoodie. The culture of polite society is now a culture of blame and hatred as our land of hope and glory is torn into extremes.

THE BIG FELLAH By Richard Bean
Directed by Sarah Esdaile Designed by Ben Stones Lighting Design by Chris Davey

Alan Bennett has a very unusual neighbour. Parked at the bottom of his garden is a van. With a lady in it. Miss Shepherd (Nichola McAuliffe) is a curious and enigmatic lady. Alan knows very little about her. She used to drive ambulances in the war, might have been a nun, sells pencils and pamphlets and has an unexplained aversion to piano music. But somehow she lives in the playwright’s garden and has done for years. The Lady In The Van is based on renowned British playwright Alan Bennett’s own recollections of the indomitable Miss Shepherd and is, as with any Bennett play, a beautifully observed, sharply intelligent and wonderfully witty drama. “...a very funny play...”

The Everyman Theatre on Hope Street opened in 1964 and has been home to some of the most inspiring, urgent, enjoyable and socially aware theatre of the last five decades. The building itself has changed many times; from chapel to cinema, boxing arena to theatre space. It once had a circle, a space for youth theatre and for building sets; now it is just what you see and it’s in a bad state of repair (despite our best efforts). Now we are poised to build a new Everyman – a vibrant creative hub fit for this uniquely cultural city in the 21st century. The Essential Ingredients
We’ve been listening to our audiences, our staff, and the actors, writers, directors and designers of the past, present and future to find out what makes the Everyman so special. Developed and designed by prominent theatre architects Haworth Tompkins, the building will provide new incarnations of the Everyman’s dynamic and inclusive 400-seat ‘thrust’ stage auditorium, legendary basement Bistro and iconic Everyman sign.

We have bought back the theatre and acquired the site next door, giving us space to accommodate vital facilities the Everyman currently lacks, many of which will also serve the Playhouse. These will include a Youth and Community space for the theatres’ vast and growing work with education and community groups; rehearsal space, workshops and offices for production staff; and a ‘hub’ for writers to develop their work. Supported by
The building will be constructed of red brick with a new glass frontage. At first floor level there will be a full-length balcony and a new 21st century version of the current iconic sign. Above this will be a beautiful façade comprising 105 life-sized, abstracted portraits of Liverpool people transferred onto cut aluminum shutters, a physical representation of the community to which the Everyman has always belonged.
What Happens Next?
Liverpool City Council has now granted planning approval. Council Leader Joe Anderson described the project as “a vital redevelopment for the City’s future. The Everyman is a real gem in Liverpool’s cultural life and while it will have a new look it will retain its unique spirit.” Work is scheduled to begin on site in 2011 with the new Everyman opening in 2013.
