Roger McGough after Molière Directed by Gemma
Bodinetz
How to lose friends and infuriate people! Disgusted with French society, where powdered fops gossip in code and be-jewelled coquettes whisper behind fans, poet Alceste embarks on a one-man crusade against fakery, frippery and forked tongues. But could the woman he adores be the worst culprit of them all? And in this rarefied world will his revolution prove merely revolting…? Following the huge success of Tartuffe and The Hypochondriac, The Misanthrope reunites the dream team of Molière, McGough and Bodinetz for this mockery of manners and morals set amid 17th century French aristocracy. The Misanthrope will tour the UK with English Touring Theatre in Spring 2013. Cast includes: Neil Caple, Simon Coates, George Potts and Colin Tierney

ROGER MCGOUGH: AS FAR AS I KNOW
President of the Poetry Society Roger was awarded his O.B.E. for services to poetry in 1997 and more recently a C.B.E. His sparklingly witty ‘McGoughière’ adaptions of Molière comedies, Tartuffe and The Hypochondriac, have produced hugely successful UK tours. These will be followed by The Misanthrope, opening mid-February at the Playhouse.

Hilarious and surreal, he is a poet of many voices. Menace and melancholy there may be, but with plenty of McGough’s wit and wordplay too.

This time he ventures beyond the garden gate to tread the mean streets of Britain. Which is better: city life or country living? Supermarket or village shop? Or is it better to sit in your shed and count the cobwebs? “His stand up is second to none, his timing is impeccable and you can practically warm your hands on his good nature” The Guardian “Wonderful, wacky, and weird” Radio Times “Shines like a beacon of humanity” HHHH Evening Standard

Dennis Potter’s charming and profound play captures his expansive humanity, his wicked humour and his fierce intolerance of ordinary cruelty. Almost twenty years after his early death, Dennis Potter speaks to our fractious, changing world with a simple but powerful rhetoric about personal responsibility. This powerful drama is an unflinching portrayal of an Edwardian family on the brink of collapse. An EVERyMAN FOR EVERYONE
The building view from Arrad Street
On Hope Street, we are hard at work creating a beautiful new incarnation of the Everyman. The new building will feature the Everyman’s trademark three-sided theatre and basement Bistro, with many new features such as a pavement café; a special space for young people and community groups; a workspace for writers, a rehearsal room and workshops. It will be very accessible, kind to the planet, and more welcoming to more people than it could ever be before. 20
Building Progress If you’ve visited Hope Street recently, you’ll know that the new Everyman is rising rapidly above the building site hoardings. Inside, our construction teams are hard at work laying bricks, installing cables, and otherwise putting the flesh on the new Everyman’s sturdy bones.
Portrait Wall The front of the new theatre will feature 105 shutters, featuring full-size portraits of 105 people of Liverpool. Over several months, we photographed hundreds of people, ranging from young children to theatre-going veterans, jugglers, cricketers, expectant mothers and whole families from all walks of life. The finished Portrait Wall will express the fact that this will truly be an Everyman for Everyone.

The New Everyman is supported by:
We have now raised over 98% of the funding for the new theatre, bringing over £25m of investment into the city from Arts Council Lottery Funds, the European Regional Development Fund and from trusts and foundations. Now we need your help to close the final funding gap. We are appealing to everyone who loves the Everyman to help in whatever way you can to make the new Everyman, and everything that happens inside it, the best it can be. Importantly, this appeal is not only for the building: it will make it possible to establish a Talent Fund which we will invest in new plays and new talent in the coming years. Many people have already responded to this appeal, joining us on the journey and becoming an integral part of the Everyman’s future. We would like to say ‘thank you’ to each and every one of them and invite others to come aboard. Together we can create a new world of possibility for brave and brilliant theatre in Liverpool.
