While pits close and dole queues grow, a couple of runaways find Heaven in 1980s London. Flash forward to today and the paparazzi are chasing a love story that could tear a family apart. Laced with magical touches and pitch black humour, Canary is an unflinching story about love, honesty and being brave enough to sing out at the top of your voice. With style. Liverpool born multiple-awardwinning writer Jonathan Harvey established his reputation with Beautiful Thing, his play-turned film for which he received an Olivier Award nomination and the John Whiting Award. As a screenwriter his credits include Gimme Gimme Gimme, Coronation

Street and his recent cult series Beautiful People. With Canary Jonathan returns to the theatre where he wrote his first play. BAFTA Award-winning director Hettie Macdonald is reunited with Jonathan, having directed both the original stage and film versions of Beautiful Thing. Inside Outside Summer 2010 at the Everyman and Playhouse This summer the programme on our stages takes a pause for breath, but we will be offering a host of activities off-stage through July and August. At the Playhouse, thanks to Arts Council funding, we will be doing an extensive programme of essential repairs to keep the old girl going until we can move forward with our full redevelopment plans in a few years’ time. Meanwhile at the Everyman we’ll be making sure the building is safe and sound to see us through until March next year, when we start work on site to create a wonderful new theatre for you.

Summerscape After the success of last year, there will be backstage tours and a range of activities at the Playhouse throughout August. Full details will be announced in June.

Celebrating the Year of Health and Wellbeing* This summer our Theatre and Community Team are working in partnership with Liverpool City Council and Liverpool Primary Care Trust to launch a flagship summer programme of arts and cultural activities for young people across Liverpool. Kicking off with the Brouhaha Carnival, the summer holidays will be full of activities for people of all ages, culminating in the Out of the Blue music festival in Everton Park.

Afro Reggae

Community Tour 2010

An internationally renowned Cultural Movement, Afro Reggae bring their theatre, music, circus and dance from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro to Liverpool. With their amazing courage and physicality these young Brazilians have created ground-breaking work with youth workers, artists, police and young people in Brazil and, more recently, in Europe. A programme of performance and theatre-making will see young people learn skills in drama, dance, circus, lighting design, film-making, urban arts and drumming, culminating in a large-scale outdoor performance.

After the success of Cruel Sea (2006) and Billy Wonderful (2009), we will be preparing to take to the road again across Merseyside. Using the stories of real people, as with our award-winning production of Unprotected, this new production is inspired by boundaries, territories and space. Aimed at young people aged 14+, look out for the show at a community venue near you this autumn.

Theatre For Everyone Under 26s / A Night Less Ordinary

Here at the Everyman and Playhouse Theatres, we believe everyone, no matter what their age or experience, should have the opportunity to enjoy great theatre. Audio description is a live verbal commentary giving information on the visual elements of a production as it unfolds. It’s great for anyone who sometimes finds it difficult to see the details of a performance, you don’t have to be blind to make use of audio description. A description of the setting, costumes and a full touch tour of the set are also available before the performance starts. Captioning is similar to television subtitling and converts the spoken word into text, which is displayed on a caption unit situated on or next to the stage. The captions also include the name of the character who is speaking or singing and descriptions of any sound effects. Captioning is a great way for anyone who sometimes finds it difficult to hear the actors speaking to still enjoy coming to the theatre.

A Night Less Ordinary is an Arts Council England scheme, supported by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, to get more young people into theatres across the country. The £2.5 million scheme will provide 618,000 free theatre tickets to anyone under 26 in more than 200 venues across England, between February 2009 and March 2011.
