Theatre for everyone
Two great theatres. One creative heart.
“We’re the litmus test of whether a society respects human rights. We’re the canaries in the mines.” In 1960s Liverpool two lovers hide in the closet, then go their separate ways. While pits close and dole queues grow, a couple of runaways find Heaven in 1980s London. Flash forward to today and the paparazzi are chasing a love story that could tear a family apart. Laced with magical touches and pitch black humour, Canary is an unflinching story about love, honesty and being brave enough to sing out at the top of your voice. With style. Liverpool born multiple-awardwinning writer Jonathan Harvey established his reputation with Beautiful Thing, his play-turned film for which he received an Olivier Award nomination and the John Whiting Award. As a screenwriter his credits include Gimme Gimme Gimme, Coronation
Street and his recent cult series Beautiful People. With Canary Jonathan returns to the theatre where he wrote his first play. BAFTA Award-winning director Hettie Macdonald is reunited with Jonathan, having directed both the original stage and film versions of Beautiful Thing. Cast includes: Sean Gallagher, Philip McGinley, Jodie McNee, Hugh Ross, Kevin Trainor and Paula Wilcox (pictured).

CHRONICLES OF LONG KESH A New Play by Northern Ireland’s Celebrated Playwright Martin Lynch
Welcome to Lemonade Estate. A place between the city and the hills, a place that people have forgotten, a place where the kids are running wild…
The hilarious, painful and shocking story of Northern Ireland’s infamous prison, Long Kesh, told through the eyes of prison officers, Republicans and Loyalists, a rich assortment of patriots, chancers, leaders, wives, escapers and hypochondriacs. Full of 1960’s Motown songs and wild, irreverent humour, this is the inside story of the Troubles.
Dennis has had enough of the ‘little demons’ running round the estate; he takes the law into his own hands and transforms himself into vigilante superhero ‘Fly Man’… Meanwhile on the other side of AGE 13+ (contains material the estate… we meet Jamal, a that may offend) boy who holds a deep, dark secret… ANLO Fri 23 Apr The secret of… Ghost Boy. A Lament Made Of Memories And Kept In Suitcases Written and Performed by Daniel Kitson
Commissioned by the Junction Cambridge
“Last September I had to move out of my flat after living there for almost six years. I didn’t want to. I lived alone. I am single. 66a Church Road was the longest relationship of my life. This is a break up show. For my flat.” Daniel Kitson, May 2008. Following last year’s sell out performance of his stand up show We Are Gathered Here at the Playhouse and previous success with his storytelling show C90, Daniel Kitson makes a welcome return to the Everyman. In 66a Church Road, he brings us astonishing images of crumbling beauty and battered grandeur from within time-beaten suitcases, telling a funny, sad and truly nostalgic story of a forsaken flat, a broken heart and the ache for home. Winner Fringe First Award 2008, Edinburgh Fringe Festival ★★★★ The Times

Their lives are at once extraordinary and mundane – until a tragic event occurs that makes them question everything. As the tension mounts, the pressure they live under starts to take its toll. Inspired by the Russian submarine disaster of August 2000, the Everyman stage is transformed to invoke the life of submariners, fathoms below the icy seas on the fraying front line of the Cold War.

Wayne McGregor | Random Dance’s award-winning Entity thrilled audiences at its world première in 2008. It arrives in Liverpool after sell-out shows in more than 14 countries, including performances at the Venice and Lyon Biennales. Performed against a pounding soundscape by Coldplay and Massive Attack collaborator, Jon Hopkins and award-winning composer Joby Talbot (The Divine Comedy), Entity is a staggering blend of bodies, lights, technology and film, which confirms McGregor’s place at the cutting edge of contemporary culture. Technically astonishing, emotionally uncompromising and hard-hitting, McGregor’s work defies categorisation. From the Novel by Susan Hill Directed by Robin Herford Designed by Michael Holt Lighting by Kevin Sleep
Being Shakespeare Written by Jonathan Bate
THE MAN FROM STRATFORD Shakespeare is the greatest writer the world has ever known. But we know nothing about him. Or do we? In a magical tour-deforce, Simon Callow, one of Britain’s greatest actors, tracks down the real William Shakespeare, bringing to life both the man and the unforgettable characters – lovers, kings, soldiers and clowns – who have since conquered the world’s stages.
Now in its 21st year in the West End, where over 7 million people have lived to tell the tale of one of the most chilling and successful theatre events ever staged. A lawyer obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over him and his family by the spectre of a ‘Woman in Black’, engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It all begins innocently enough, but as they reach further into his darkest memories, they find themselves caught up in a world of eerie marshes and moaning winds. The borders between make believe and reality begin to blur and the flesh begins to creep... “The audience were jumping out of their seats” The Observer www.thewomaninblack.com

Enlightening, deeply moving and gloriously funny, The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is a story that has changed countless lives and remains as vivid and as relevant as when it was written almost a century ago. This story of a group of working men who are joined one day by Owen, a journeyman-prophet with a vision of a just society, is a masterpiece of wit and political passion and one of the most authentic novels of English working class life ever written. Now one of our greatest playwrights, Howard Brenton, adapts it for the stage in a new production for the Everyman. Christopher Morahan returns

Inside Outside Summer 2010 at the Everyman and Playhouse This summer the programme on our stages takes a pause for breath, but we will be offering a host of activities off-stage through July and August. At the Playhouse, thanks to Arts Council funding, we will be doing an extensive programme of essential repairs to keep the old girl going until we can move forward with our full redevelopment plans in a few years’ time. Meanwhile at the Everyman we’ll be making sure the building is safe and sound to see us through until March next year, when we start work on site to create a wonderful new theatre for you.
Summerscape After the success of last year, there will be backstage tours and a range of activities at the Playhouse throughout August. Full details will be announced in June.
Celebrating the Year of Health and Wellbeing* This summer our Theatre and Community Team are working in partnership with Liverpool City Council and Liverpool Primary Care Trust to launch a flagship summer programme of arts and cultural activities for young people across Liverpool. Kicking off with the Brouhaha Carnival, the summer holidays will be full of activities for people of all ages, culminating in the Out of the Blue music festival in Everton Park.
Afro Reggae
Community Tour 2010
An internationally renowned Cultural Movement, Afro Reggae bring their theatre, music, circus and dance from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro to Liverpool. With their amazing courage and physicality these young Brazilians have created ground-breaking work with youth workers, artists, police and young people in Brazil and, more recently, in Europe. A programme of performance and theatre-making will see young people learn skills in drama, dance, circus, lighting design, film-making, urban arts and drumming, culminating in a large-scale outdoor performance.
After the success of Cruel Sea (2006) and Billy Wonderful (2009), we will be preparing to take to the road again across Merseyside. Using the stories of real people, as with our award-winning production of Unprotected, this new production is inspired by boundaries, territories and space. Aimed at young people aged 14+, look out for the show at a community venue near you this autumn.
Festival Fun As well as taking part in the city’s Out of the Blue Festival (4 to 5 September) the theatres will be at the Latitude Festival in July.

Theatre For Everyone Accessible Performances
Theatre For Everyone Under 26s / A Night Less Ordinary
Here at the Everyman and Playhouse Theatres, we believe everyone, no matter what their age or experience, should have the opportunity to enjoy great theatre. Audio description is a live verbal commentary giving information on the visual elements of a production as it unfolds. It’s great for anyone who sometimes finds it difficult to see the details of a performance, you don’t have to be blind to make use of audio description. A description of the setting, costumes and a full touch tour of the set are also available before the performance starts. Captioning is similar to television subtitling and converts the spoken word into text, which is displayed on a caption unit situated on or next to the stage. The captions also include the name of the character who is speaking or singing and descriptions of any sound effects. Captioning is a great way for anyone who sometimes finds it difficult to hear the actors speaking to still enjoy coming to the theatre.
