STOP AND SHOP

WIN, WIN, WIN

By Stephen Guy, West Derby Society

ROAD transport has been transformed in the past century with motors meeting virtually all our needs. Railways dominated national transport but horses shifted most things around locally before the First World War. People moving house loaded their furniture on to a hand cart or, if they were better off, into a pantechnicon – a large horsedrawn van. Most people walked – it was an age of compulsory exercise because there was usually no alternative. Well-off people were known as carriage folk because they kept private conveyances to carry them around. The shopping experience was gradually changed by the arrival of cars although it was hardly noticeable at first. Old street directories give a fascinating picture of the breadth and diversity of local shops before the advent of supermarkets. Businesses in Hall Lane, Huyton Quarry, in 1918 included grocers, hairdressers, potters, sweet shops, a dairy, fruiterer and chip shop. Thomas Haighway ran a laundry, Norman Langley had a butcher’s and John Ellis a bakery.

Two family tickets to be won for Easter panto Sleeping Beauty – page 11

Patricia Pico was landlady of the Seel Arms, Albert Jones repaired boots and Albert Fairclough dealt in old clothes. The only chain store was the Co-op. Eaton Road in West Derby is pictured one sunny day in Edwardian times with not a car in sight. A carriage approaches from the Village – there is a pile of horse muck in the road. A cart stands in Norris Green Road where a shopkeeper stands in the doorway. The sandstone wall vanished long ago but the trees and several of the shops remain. Affordable cars arrived in the 1930s produced by

big manufacturers including Ford. Mass production saw increasing numbers of family saloons on the roads. At first, cars made shopping and other visits comparatively easy for those who could afford them. Until gridlocks started to appear, you simply parked the car outside wherever you were visiting. For a time, even in city centres, drivers just drew up at the kerb. There were no traffic wardens, no parking fees and very few restrictions. All this changed, of course, as more and more vehicles piled on to the roads. The post war years saw the spread of by-passes then the arrival of motorways.

Parking meters and other restrictions were hugely resented – as they still are among some drivers today. n Join the West Derby Society at its next meeting 7.30 pm on Wednesday 19 April at Lowlands, 13 Haymans Green, Liverpool L12 7JG.

History department Dixieland concert achieves Gold Award MERCHANT Taylors’ Boys’ School is celebrating the achievements of its History Department after being awarded the prestigious Gold History Quality Mark by the Historical Association. This is a national award and it took 12 months to complete. The award is rigorous involving a full audit of provision, the creation of a substantial portfolio of evidence across a range of different areas and an inspection visit to meet the department and observe teaching. The department was assessed in Teaching and Learning, Curriculum, Achievement, Leadership and Enrichment with each section being well regarded in the final report. It was recognised in the report that the ‘learning and achievement in the subject is strong’ and that GCSE results in History are ‘impressively high’ at 98% A*-C, alongside A level success of 100% A*-C. This is the result of the hard work and dedication of both the pupils and teachers, supported by the wide range of resources that are used in the department to inspire and complement the teaching. In addition to this, the work that the history department does in the local community was also commended.

THE Savoy Jazzmen are giving a concert in the Sefton Park Palm House on Tuesday 4th April between 2pm and 4pm. Bring your brollies and join in the Mardi Gras parade numbers or just

come and listen. There is a £6.00 admission charge which includes tea or coffee and a slice of cake. Further details from :- Peter Swensson 0151 722 1478

Bee Gees tribute night

CARDINAL Heenan PTA are having a Bee Gees tribute night on Saturday 29th April. Tickets are £10 and are supported by DJ and a licenced bar. History continues to be a popular subject at Merchant Taylors’ and this department has strong influence on other areas of the curriculum and school life. It was acknowledged in the report that our pupils ‘understand the purpose of studying history and are highly motivated’ being guided by a strong curriculum and structured feedback. Mr Heap, who is Head of History and Politics and a Principal Examiner for the Edexcel History GCSE, said: “We are delighted to be one of the first schools in the country to achieve this prestigious award. The department as a whole has worked hard over a number of years to create an innovative History curriculum which helps our students to see how the events of the past directly shape the world in which we live. “Since 2013, 29 boys have gone on to read

History at university having achieved outstanding A Level results according to national benchmarks. At GCSE the department has increased the number of boys achieving an A* when the national trend has been one of sharp decline. “However, this award recognises a lot more than just exam results. We help our students to develop a genuine love of the subject which will never leave them. In future years we look forward to working even more with the local community and with local schools to promote the teaching of History.” The award was well deserved with the History department being described by the assessors as ‘well led, influential and forward thinking’. With very few secondary schools being awarded Gold so far, this is testament to the outstanding education that Merchant Taylors’ provides.

Cat of the month THIS is the story of a young cat who was abandoned in Toxteth. She had nowhere to go and nothing to eat. Luckily she found a quiet yard where she could curl up beside a wall and get some shelter. She was desperately hungry and would manage just on scraps and rainwater. Before long she gave birth to five kittens but struggled on, exhausted with feeding her tiny kittens and having to find food. The kittens grew bigger and soon were exploring the yard for themselves. Poor Mum was always tired, feeding the kittens and coping with the cold, wet November weather. Luckily, someone in the house spotted this young family and phoned us. Soon all were all rescued and we found homes for the kittens and their Mum, who was adopted with two of her kittens. All seemed well but then the lovely

Strange Tale – By Anton Valdemart

If the cap fits SANDRA saw him first as she walked through Springfield Park with her best friend Doreen. Herbert crouched by the bushes, binoculars pressed to his eyes. He peered intently into the undergrowth before noting something down in a notebook. The girls sat down nearby and opened their sandwiches. They knew Herbert from work in the office at the nearby brewery. He had an outdoor job and could often be seen bustling around the yard making sure consignments were loaded correctly on to dray carts. Herbert put away his binoculars and went over to

the girls. “First blackcap this year,” he said. “It was perched inside the copse – they’re very difficult to spot.” Sandra rather fancied Herbert and decided to become a bird spotter too. They were soon going into the park during lunch breaks and in the summer evenings after work. She discovered that Herbert was interested in all kinds of wildlife, from the smallest moth to the largest elephant. Their first day out together was to Chester Zoo, reached on a noisy steam train that stopped at every station. They shared a packet of

crisps and a bottle of cream soda. It was fun riding on the elephant as it slowly made its way through the noisy crowds. Herbert kept his cap firmly on his head – he wore it everywhere he went: Sandra had never seen him without it. Herbert particularly liked the apes and monkeys but Sandra thought them uncouth and savage. A family of orang-utans sat by a shallow pool. A big male half-crawled, half walked along the bank. Suddenly one of the young ones pushed the ape into the water. He snarled as he pulled himself out,

his shaggy red hair dripping wet. The crowd of spectators laughed. Some weeks later Herbert and Sandra visited Dovecot Baths where Sandra’s Aunt Mildred worked as a first aider. The couple sat on the steps overlooking the pool, Sandra cradled in his arms. This was an important day. Herbert was about to demonstrate his diving skills. At last Sandra would see him without his cap. Herbert disappeared into a changing cubicle and in a few minutes re-appeared in his bathing costume. Sandra choked with shock: Herbert was covered from head to toe in dark red hair. She watched mesmerised as the climbed the ladder up to the diving board. He waited for other swimmers to get clear before plunging into the pool. A perfect dive. Herbert looked up at her baring his teeth in a grimacing smile. It was like she was back at Chester Zoo. Herbert’s hairy body shimmered in the harsh light, his short hair plastered down on his head. Sandra felt she was being enveloped in a red mist and felt herself losing consciousness. She came round suddenly with the aid of smelling salts from Mildred. “You’ve had a shock,” said her smiling aunt, looking on knowingly. “But you’ll get over it.”

More volunteers needed for Allerton in Bloom... SUMMER is on its way (hopefully) and it is the busiest time of year for Allerton in Bloom. Winter plants have to be removed and the planters are filled with summer bedding plants which brighten up Allerton Road and Rose Lane. We receive lots of comments about how lovely they look, and we do wish to continue with our work but we require more help. None of us are getting any younger and a few people have left for various reasons, so we are looking for several more volunteers to help us look after the planters. It is not all work either, we have several social occasions

during the year. A visit to a garden centre is planned shortly, and we always manage to fit a couple of meals out during the year. If you are interested in joining us, come along to The John Brodie (next door

to Chandlers on Allerton Road) on Tuesday 25th April at 7pm and join us for a coffee or a drink and learn a bit more about what we do to keep Allerton “blooming” or telephone Margaret Spencer on 724-4115 for further details.

How to make coq au vin like a professional French chef WHETHER you’re hosting a dinner party or simply wanting to try a new dish, this coq au vin (chicken in wine) recipe comes straight from the personal cookbook of gourmet French chef, Maynard. What you’ll need: 1 whole chicken 4 large onions 250g smoked bacon lardons 1 bunch of fresh thyme 4 cloves of garlic 2 tbsp flour 1 tbsp vegetable oil 1 bottle of red wine 500ml chicken stock To begin, slice the onions and garlic and chop the thyme as you preheat a large non-stick frying pan. Fry the chopped onions, garlic, and thyme with the bacon lardons until they are golden brown. Then, remove them from the pan for later. Chop the chicken into pieces, leaving the drumstick and thighs on the bone, and cutting the breasts in half. Re-heat the same frying pan and fry your chicken pieces. Once they are golden brown, sprinkle flour over them, and cook like a roux – until the sauce thickens. Now, pour the entire bottle of red wine into the pan with the chicken

and allow it to come to a boil. Once it boils, transfer the chicken and wine to a slow cooker and add the onions, garlic, and thyme as well as the chicken stock. Bring this mixture to a gentle simmer, and let it cook slowly for two to three hours, or until it is tender. Season it as desired, and serve it alongside mashed potatoes and fresh vegetables like cabbage or

carrots for a warm, hearty dinner. Want to try your hand at even more complex dishes alongside Chef Maynard at his French cooking school? You can find his cookery holidays on GoLearnTo.com, which offers a range of cookery and other activity holidays including horse riding, painting, photography, yoga, and jewellery making that inspire you to learn as you travel.

Dog of the month – Max MAX is a very sensitive boy who likes to have a safe place of his own in the home. Once he has a bond with someone he will trust them completely but it takes a while for him to build it. He likes to watch nature documentaries on TV whilst cuddled up to his favourite human! He also enjoys a good roll around, rubbing his back on everything in sight, and is better with robust toys! Max is a very insecure and anxious little dog. He worries greatly when outside

that he will be approached by other dogs and people he doesn’t know. He needs lots of care and patience and is looking for a home with a sympathetic family who will visit him a few times at the centre, and allow him plenty time to settle in at home. Max must live in a CHILD FREE home, free of other pets. He’s perfectly housetrained and keeps his kennel spotless, though he’s not averse to the occasional roll in a muddy puddle! Save up to 30 per cent on flights by booking your summer holiday now WITH the high-travel, hightemperature summer quickly approaching, now is the best time to get your summer holiday sorted… especially your flights, say the experts. According to 2016 flight data from Skyscanner, the best time to book your flights is seven weeks out. And with just over two months to the beginning of travel’s high season, that means to get the best prices, you need to book now. Now, if you’re feeling stressed because you haven’t even booked a holiday yet, don’t worry, you still have a few weeks to sort it out. The experts at GoLearnTo. com would also be happy to talk you through a holiday to match your tastes and help you reserve your spot with just a deposit. And, we’ve compiled a few more tips to help you save as you start booking: Book flights on a Sunday

With many tales of the woes and triumphs of booking at certain times, a new study by Expedia and the Airlines Reporting Corporation reported in Conde Nast finally have given a concrete answer. Book on Sundays (not Tuesdays at 3 pm, or Wednesdays at 1 am) to get over 30% off on longhaul flights and 17% on short range trips. Do not book flights on a Friday Your bank account will suffer unnecessarily if you book on a Friday. Business travel tickets are rushing to make the next week’s plans and airlines increase their prices due to the demand; if you are caught in the fray, you will pay. Instead, set a price alert. Skyscanner and many other travel conglomerates like Expedia and Kayak

allow you to set an alert to remind you to book when prices are lower. Waiting two days until Sunday to actually go through and finalise the purchase will save you enough to buy several souvenirs or meals you couldn’t otherwise afford.

Book a holiday with NO single supplements GoLearnTo.com is a learning holiday expert, and we have many holidays specifically for solo travellers, so you can travel even in the height of summer without paying a single supplement for a private room. This can save you £50, £100, or even £200 on your holiday. The vote is out, and the verdict is in: to enjoy a summer holiday without contributing to the estimated £1.1B Brits are unknowingly overspending, book your holiday and your flights now.

I-Zingari Combination Cup tie, with the Vets playing host to a much younger St. Vincents side, currently lying second in the First Division of the open age league. It was also something of a reunion with many of the visiting team formerly turning out for the home club. The game started with a bang with the Vets

coming out of the starting blocks at a cracking pace. Continuing in their recent form the Vets were able to display their class moving the ball about with precision and confidence. It was no surprise therefore when they took the lead with an early goal courtesy of the head of Kev Price. Shortly after, following

a period of further dominance, the Vets won a penalty. The failure to convert the subsequent spot kick proved to be a turning point. The miss was the catalyst for the visitors to up their game and they gradually began to gain and retain possession as the pace previously shown by the hosts began

to wane. Being forced back into their own half the Vets were proving resilient and were able to hold out until the 75th minute when the Saints drew level following a goalmouth scramble. The younger side then took over and were able to add to their total with another two slots and extinguish the Vets cup hopes.

South still in the mix ... By Jim Stanway

SOUTH Liverpool FC remain active on two fronts and face two important games at the end of March which will go a long way to indicate whether the first team will finish with silverware. A league game at Newton, the title favourites, will be vital to South’s chances of retaining the title, while a midweek semi-final against Woolton in the Liverpool County FA Challenge Cup will provide an opportunity to retain the cup that the team won so thrillingly last May. The semi will be held at Walton Hall Park

on Tuesday 28th March at 7pm. An important win at Upton AA by 4-3 saw the team stay in contention for the league title with goals from Alex Woodcock and Gary Pollard and two from Gary Dunning including a penalty. Three points were awarded to the team when Cammell Laird Reserves failed to raise a team but the wet weather has also caused some postponements. The reserves have consolidated a top six position in the West Cheshire League second division despite a 3-0 defeat to the league leaders, Ashville. A well deserved 1-1 draw with fourth placed Hale with a David Mee penalty equalising a first half strike. A win over lowly West Kirby Reserves saw David Mee score another hat-trick, his fifth of the season, along with goals from Paddy Doyle, Reggie Royes and Gerard Forde. The youth team got back to winning ways with a 2-1 away win at Vauxhall Motors with two well-taken goals from Luke Wilson They remain in pole position to take the West Cheshire League youth division title but the weather has taken its toll on their fixtures. The club will be holding its annual Sportsman’s Evening at the Highfield Social Club, Queens Drive, Liverpool, L14 1PT on Friday 5th May and the guest speaker is Liverpool FC legend Jan Molby. A COUPLE of weeks ago, news came out that we now need to have about 10 portions of fruit and veg a day for our general wellbeing. One of the reasons for this is because by the time we are about to consume these foods a lot of their elements have been destroyed through overcooking or being sprayed with pesticides etc, so we don’t really feel the feel the full benefit of that food. Here are some tips that I hope will help: n Buy a food blender – these are absolutely brilliant for helping you achieve

your fruit and veg intake in a day. There’s so many great smoothie recipes about that are easy to put together and will give you what you need. You can even add some protein powder, which is what I do. n Add some berries to your breakfast or maybe some mashed banana or avocado on your toast n If you nee.d to snack either mid-morning or midafternoon, try having some low fat Greek style yoghurt and add some fruit. n You can also use some guacamole or humus, create dips with carrot, peppers or celery.

n Add veg to your evening meal. This is the best time to have ‘fibrous’ carbs, as your body won’t be needing more ‘starchy’ carbs like bread, pasta etc... First team are champions By Chris Thomas

THE hard work has paid off for Liverpool Sefton Hockey Club men’s first team. After a gruelling pre-season that began last July, the team has been confirmed as league winners of the North West League Division and have therefore earned promotion to the North League. Promotion was confirmed with a game to spare with a 7-0 victory over Bowdon. The success of the team has been driven by coach James Cunliffe and captain Peter Kenyon and the positive feeling created by the men’s first team has flowed throughout the club. There have regularly been over 40 players at training on a Tuesday night and all teams have performed well this season as a result. Third place in the league has been secured

for the second team and second in the league for the third team, which brings promotion. The reformed fourth team has been undefeated in all its games. The club is still on the hunt for other honours. Despite quarter final defeats in National competitions for the men’s first team and the ladies’ second team, there are three ladies’ teams competing in the semi -final of Lancashire cup competitions. Liverpool Sefton have a good record in these cup competitions so the teams will be doing all they can to bring home more trophies to complete a very successful season. Preparations are already under way for the summer activities with plans in place for Walking Hockey and Back to Hockey sessions for those interested in taking up the sport.

Alder FC – Winter round up By Peter Harrison

STORM Doris has brought the first serious disruption to the season with two weekends cancelled in February due to waterlogged pitches. The Premier Division side has seen mixed results with a solid 4-2 away league victory against Old Xaverians – Ben Forshaw with a rare goal and Seb Langley on the score

sheet. They also progressed into the next round of the League Cup with a tight 3-2 victory over Alumini – with Timmy Naylor and Tony Smith netting. However, sandwiched in between was a disappointing 2-0 defeat to East Villa in the George Mahon Cup, which saw them eliminated in the quarter finals. The first division side has moved nicely up the

table and is in contention for a top four finish. A 6-0 home demolition of Eli Lilley saw Antony Barnes score a wonder goal (his words not mine!) with Owen Jones and, remarkably, veteran Hilly on the score sheet. This was followed up by a hard fought 2-1 victory against Edge Hill Boys Club with Sean Davis grabbing the all-important winner

late in the game. Kevin Murphy The Alder Club is hosting a charity event for Kevin on Sunday 9th April 2017. Kevin has been diagnosed with gullet cancer and is receiving treatment to recover. He is chairman of Fulwood Arms, who play in the Liverpool and District Sunday League. A charity football match will be held at 2pm between an
