O
ur Association's busy Fall schedule is nearly at an end. September found us involved with our show at the State Fair, setting up a booth at Husker Harvest Days and traveling throughout Southwest Nebraska on our Annual Angus Tour. As always, we saw great cattle, enjoyed time with old acquaintances and made new friends. Upcoming on December 10th, will be our Annual Meeting and Banquet in Kearney at the Holiday Inn. We have Dr. Matt Spangler set to talk to us about enhanced DNA tests, what they can tell us about our breeding programs and which ones (if any) we need to run in on our cattle. Trent Loos will be our featured speaker at our banquet. It should be a great day and evening. And don't forget we'll have our Nebraska Producer of the Year and Pioneer Award winner presentations also during the banquet. Check out the schedule on page 5. One of the biggest changes for the coming year is a decrease, yes that's right a decrease in advertising rates for our members. It isn't often these days that you hear about prices going down for any goods or services we use in our business and I am excited to present the new advertising prices on page 2. I hope you all are able to take advantage of these new rates. Please contact me by December 1, 2011 to reserve your space in the Jan-Feb 2012 issue of the Nebraska Angus News. Our magazines and your catalogs printed by our new printer MTZ Media are posted on the website www.livestockdirect.net at no additional charge. We also have additional membership benefits from our printer...discount rates
for printing your production sale catalogs and discounts on advertising items such as caps, cups, pens, magnets, etc. Contact me for more information on how to take advantage of these benefits. As always, keep up to date with Association news at our website www.nebraskaangus.org. Until Next Time…

The IGENITYŽ profile for Angus is helping bring certainty to Angus breeding. It gives breeders the information they need to make more confident and informed decisions. Available exclusively through the American Angus Association, this DNA profile provides a comprehensive picture of key economically important traits that can help improve the performance of your herd. And, with more accurate Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs), you can take some of the risk out of selecting young animals. It’s a powerful tool to move your operation forward.

Louisville, KY - Arlen Sawyer of Bassett, Nebraska was re-elected to the National Angus Association Board of Directors at the 2011 National Angus Convention held in Louisville, KY. Sawyer will serve a second three year term as Director. More than 300 elected delegates from 43 states, Canada and the District of Columbia represented American Angus Association members and conducted the business of the Association during the annual meeting and election. The meeting was at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center (KFEC) in conjunction with the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) Super-Point Roll of Victory (ROV) Angus Show. Arlen and his wife, Becky, are owners of A&B Cattle located south of Bassett in the north-central Sandhills of Nebraska and have two children, Jessica and Adam. After graduating from South Dakota State University (SDSU), Arlen accepted the position of manager of the 700-head registered cow herd at K Plus
Angus Ranch. From 1984 to 1990, Arlen and Becky purchased ranchland in Rock County, Neb., and expanded their own cow herd. They established “A&B Cattle” in fall 1990. Through the years, Arlen has judged numerous regional and national livestock events and is a member of the Nebraska Angus Association, Nebraska Cattlemen and the Sandhill Cattle Association. He is a past president of the Nebraska Angus Association and the Area II Region of the Nebraska Cattlemen. faster horse." When the popular belief of the time was to reduce the standards for beef quality, our membership forged forward with a branded beef program that in this last fiscal year sold over 800 million pounds of Certified Angus Beef. For over 50 years our membership has worked at developing the most envied database and reliable performance information in the beef industry. We are now using genomic technology to reach even greater accuracy in breeding Angus cattle. All this could not have been accomplished without the dedication of a talented staff in all of our association entities, coupled with the insight and willingness of this membership to use the technology. An 'ol boy back home always says that in America one is only limited by two things....imagination and ambition. I don't think there has ever been a shortage of traits in Angus breeders. We have a lot to look forward to in this industry. Cattle prices are at all time highs. The whole beef industry is benefiting from our determination in breeding cattle that meet CAB standards. This has generated a higher quality end-product that I believe is the driving force increasing consumer demand. We are being rewarded for these efforts as the choice-select spread , been steadily increasing this fall currently exceeding $18.00. The success of today's beef industry is focused on quality! J. Paul Getty was once asked for his formula to success...rise early, work hard and it doesn't hurt to strike oil. Since we can't always rely on luck, we have to hope that our association will continue to provide members with the technology and tools to help achieve even greater heights while grooming the next generation to build on our success. It has been a honor for me to serve on your national board of directors these past three years. I
I
would like to thank the Nebraska Angus Association board of directors and its members for their unanimous endorsement of my re-election to the American Angus Association board of directors. The Nebraskans that have previously served on this board have set a high standard of excellence and I want to thank them for their outstanding service! The experience of these past three years on this board have made it even more evident to me what makes our breed and our association the envy of the rest of the purebred industry. It is you, the membership. The American Angus Association is not just a brick building in St. Joseph, Missouri. The American Angus Association is 30,000 junior and regular members across this nation. It is this great membership that has always been willing to improve and advance this breed of cattle, often when the rest of the beef industry is going in a different direction. I am reminded of an observation by our friend, Dave Nichols when he said that in 1492 most of the people in the world believed that the earth was flat. Christopher Columbus didn't argue with them or try to convince them that the earth was round, he just got on a boat. That is what our members have been willing to do for several decades and continue to do so. For more than 75 years this breed took a back seat to whitefaced cattle, and in the mid-1970's to the continental breeds. With the perseverance of our membership look at the number of Angus bulls used today! Brent Eichar of Certified Angus Beef used a quote of Henry Ford's once in a presentation that I like. After Henry Ford invented the Model T he said, "You cannot merely rely on what your customers tell you they want. If I had asked people what they wanted, they probably would have said a
pledge to served with the dignity and diligence that you should demand and definitely deserve. Please call if you have any concerns.

Hello Angus Friends!
I
hope that you all are enjoying this fall weather and harvest season as much as I am! I’m sure all of you juniors are getting excited for the beginning of the upcoming show season and the time has come to pick out some projects for next year. As many of you know, there is more to the National Junior Angus Show than just the livestock exhibits. There are also contests for public speaking, photography, and posters for individuals to compete in so keep that in mind as we head into the new year. Some of the projects like the photography and posters do not require you to actually attend the show. Junior Nationals always seems to sneak up on you and it’s sometimes difficult to quickly start and finish some of those individual projects the week before (or day before in some cases) the due date! It’s never too early to start thinking about those projects! Congratulations to everyone that was successful at the Nebraska State Fair! There were a lot of familiar Angus faces in the Cattle Barn and it was great to catch up with friends that we only get to see at the shows throughout the year! We had a great turn out at our State Fair meeting in September.
We discussed having a show in Kearney in December and plans are in the works for that! This show will be December 11th at 9 AM. The show will be open to all bordering states and North Dakota. Everyone must bring their own bedding and it will be a “blow and go.” Remember that Kearney is in a brand inspection area and if you are from out of the inspection area you will need to bring proof of ownership. There is a block of rooms available at the Holiday Inn in Kearney that will be held until November 18th. After November 18th you can still book rooms at the regular rate. Be on the lookout for more information and entry forms that will be available on the Nebraska Junior Angus website and through Facebook. If you haven’t already, you should add the Nebraska Junior Angus Association as a friend on Facebook so you can keep up to date with everything that is going on with our group! Good luck picking out those new projects and hope to see you in Kearney! Yours, Melissa Keyes

Southwest Members Host 2011 Tour
I
mperial, Nebraska served as headquarters for the 2011 Nebraska Angus Tour September 23rd-24th. The two day event attracted a nice crowd which viewed the cattle on this year's annual event. Bear Mountain Angus Ranch and Chrisman Family Cattle hosted a kickoff evening meal at the Bear Mountain Angus Sale facility West of Palisade. Brian and Tiffany Stoller hosted a great meal and had a variety of cattle on display - from females that will be featured in their November sale to some of their newest genetics. Travis and Kelli Chrisman had some fall pairs on display from their operation. Kelli also displayed some of the sale catalogs she has produced in her graphic arts business CCS Print Design. On Friday morning the tour wound its way Southwest of Imperial to Haigler and a breakfast stop at Windmill Angus. There Alex and Joan Peterson and their crew welcomed the tour goers, their cattle on display and a mini heifer selection contest. The winner of the contest was awarded 10 or 20 straws to their herd sire TC Forthright 9284. From Windmill Angus Ranch, the tour headed Northeast towards Hayes Center and a lunch stop at Mill Bar Angus. Here Mick and Marlene Cox introduced their extensive family who are part of the operation in various responsibilities. Tour goers were treated to a CAB prime rib sandwich lunch and were able to view the Mill Bar cattle. From Mill Bar Angus at Hayes Center the tour group headed East towards McCook and a stop at Nebraska Bull Service. At this stop the visitors were treated to an in depth look at the cattle semen collection operation and their newly added embryo transfer service. It was a great special interest stop for this year's tour. Heading South out of McCook towards the Kansas border, the tour stopped at Ely Angus and their breeding program
on display. The Roger and Karen Ely and Jim and Theresa Ely families had their cattle in top shape for their part of the tour. The final stop of the day was at Pettera Angus just Northeast of McCook. Here the Frontier Angus Farms owned by Jim and Twila Johnson and Paul and Gail Johnson family and Triple CCC Cattle Co. owned by Bill and Nikki Cappel were guests of the Pettera's and had cattle on display at the last stop of the first day. The second day of the tour headed North out of Imperial and a breakfast stop display the Perkins County Fairgrounds at Grant. Here Huckfeldt-Turner, Vision Angus and Chris Fryzek of 9 R Land and Cattle had their breeding programs on exhibit for the tour goers. Cattle present at the stop included bull and heifer calves, bred heifers, a herd sire and commercial pairs from the tour participants. It was a great stop to start off the day. From Grant, the tour headed North to Ogallala, then west on I80 and stop at Boss Premier Cattle
near Chappell, Nebraska. Here the Boss family greeted the entourage with a weight guessing contest on their herd sire "Prowler". Winner of the contest received some semen on the bull. From Boss Premier Cattle the column of vehicles headed Northwest of Chappell to T 4 Livestock. Here Jeannette Dean welcomed the tour to their display of the Angus and Sim/Angus breeding program. The final stop of 2011 was at SandPoint Cattle Co. east of Lodgepole. Here John and Laurie Widdowson and their sons and crew greeted the tour for a CAB lunch. Visitors were welcome to view a variety of cattle in the SandPoint program including females and pairs that were offered in their November sale. The winner of the donated C.J. Brown print was Trevor Lienemann of Princeton, NE.
