“Shorthorns are the best kept secret in the beef industry.” Doug Hamlin - Owner/CEO of Hamlin Ag Marketing “I would love the oppurtunity to harvest more Shorthorn cattle.” Don Johnson - Buyer for Tyson “I am really satisfied with bulls and I plan on coming back for more. The bulls were grown right, were not overconditioned so they held up and kept condition throughout the breeding season.” Dave Skogeland - past bull customer

Welcome to the Sale We are excited to welcome you to the 1st Annual COMMON CENT$ Bull Sale. It is our honor to have you come evaluate our 2012 bull sale offering. Over the past few years, we have worked endlessly on building a herd of common cents cows that are “the right kind.” On the shorthorn cattle, we have chosen to focus on many traits that the breed was once known for from calving ease to fleshing ability and from carcass to maternal. Our outcross shorthorn genetics have been pulled from many different parts of the continent. The percentage bulls have focused on bringing you hybrid vigor that provides calving ease, performance, and longevity. The only thing that is FREE in the cattle business is heterosis and these bulls are designed to bring it to your operation. Shorthorns are noted for their docility, calving ease, finishing ability, growth and marbling ability – traits that are valued by the commercial cattleman and are key elements in any crossbreeding program. In all our cattle, there is NOTHING more important in the beef industry than a live calf hitting the ground and having a good mother to care of her newborn. Our cows also needs to have the ability to raise a calf with low inputs. Another benchmark we look for is percent body weight of cow weaned and how many pounds of calf weaned per acre of grass. We feel that we are heading in the direction of the future and still have cattle with “a look.” We are confident that as input costs continue to rise we will be a leading contender for your seedstock business. We feel that we have the most unique and freshest genetics that will work from your pasture to the U.S. consumers plate. We look forward to seeing you January 28th and helping you find the bull of your future. JDMC Cattle Co.

$ Value Definitions

This catalog is the first in the Shorthorn breed to list dollar value traits. These dollar values are designed to assist you in your purchasing decision. Below is an explanation of each dollar value trait and its significance to your operation. We are also providing to you the breed average for each trait as well as the average of the bulls in this sale. If you have any questions on these values please feel free to give us a call to discuss.

$ CEZ – ($ Calving Ease) This index assumes a bull will only be mated to heifers, not cows. The potential profitability of the sire is measured by the incidence of live calves at birth. Moderate mature size is also emphasized in the index, but performance is not a priority. This index is also a good measure of Shorthorn females’ ability to produce calving ease sires. Overemphasis of $CEZ may cause unwanted depression of weaning and yearling performance. $F – ($ Feedlot) Similar to a Terminal Sire scenario, $Feedlot places strong emphasis on growth and carcass traits. This multi-trait index assumes the sire will be mated to a mix of heifers and cows and attempts to measure profitability when progeny are sold on the fed market. On the female side, mature size should be monitored closely when selecting for $F. Over-selection may cause detrimental harm to longevity, reproductive efficiency, and fleshing ability. $BMI – ($ British Maternal Index) As the name implies, this multi-trait selection index attempts to measure a bull’s potential profitability when complimenting the British cow base (Angus, Red Angus, Hereford, etc.). Shorthorn females can likewise be gauged at adding value to British or British-composite bulls of other breeds. A balance of growth and carcass traits is desired with a strong maternal component aimed at optimum reproductive efficiency and cow longevity. Breed Averages: $CEZ - $4.49 $F - $24.94 $BMI - $21.71 Sale Averages: $CEZ - $19.03 $F - $27.39 $BMI - $29.28 Shorthorn Breed Averages CE

This is the kind of bull we are striving to produce. El Diablo is 726’s third calf and she has yet to miss... She has a black son on a ranch in western Nebraska, a son working at the famed Maurice Mitchell’s Ranch in Southern Minnesota and now 20Y. The new owner of this bull can expect a call from us when we lose Prince because we feel that he is the son to replace him with. From calving ease to performance he is a stud! He was the high indexing calf at weaning.

Here is a very intriguing bull that goes back to Marquis twice in his pedigree. This is what is supposed to happen when you line up great maternal machines. It is very hard to get your hands on any Marquis genetics so we thought we would just try and recreate him. This bull is going to make any operation profitable. Rainmaker is a maternal brother to JDMC Big Sky 15X Currently working at Nelson Family Shorthorns.

Here is another intersting calf that qualifies for Native status. Everyone in the Shorthorn breed is searching for an outcross pedigree but it is hard to find one that abosolutely everyone can use. His sire was born on June 5th of 1965. How about we go back in time and forget about all the negative progress that was made in the late 70s, 80s, and 90’s in most sectors of the cattle business. Clipper King was known for his abilities to raise cattle that could not only survive on grass but thrive on grass. Whether you are trying to raise grass fed beef or are just looking to lower maintance costs within your own herd this is the bull for you.... Can Clipper King of USA - Sire of Lot 9 you imagine the marketing potentials of a young sire like this. Semen sales could reach unherd of levels on bull bred like this. Retaining 1/2 Semen interest. Life Saver came into this world at 68 pounds and never looked back and before we knew it he was nearly the same size as mama. I don’t care what venue you’re in there is NOTHING more important that a live calf at birth and he is sure to do it. We will be using him AI on heifers.

This bull is out of what we think could be our best producing Marquis daughter as a matter of fact she is the only cow that we flushed last year. Two years ago she raised our top bull that is working is South Eastern MN and last year she raised JDMC Retro 43X, the bull that is working in North Dakota for Scott Hansen. Being sired by Task Force he is also a sure bet calving ease cow maker. Last year the Task Force cleaned up the heifer pen and we did not touch a single calf out of that group.

This April-born bull calf out of a first-calf heifer has been getting better and better each day. He is quickly becoming one of my favorites. He was weaned the 10th of September and did not see any creep feed all summer. His granddam is one of our original Shorthorn cows and each year she brings in a great calf. This cow family has a tremendous amount of milk and puts everything they have into their calves. Her daughter obviously is starting the same trend.

WOW!!! The picture says it all. Deep, Soft made, heavy muscled, and style to boot. He is super athletic and commands respect when on the move. We purchased his mother as a bred heifer from Kyle Porter at Finesse Livestock in Iowa. This is her first calf and I can’t wait to see what her future holds. This bull can work for so many people in so many different situations. Come find him on sale day and the only ones going home disappointed are those that didn’t get him bought.

Need a bull to work on heifers, here is your man! He was the Reserve Champion Shorthorn plus bull at the MN State Fair. He is moderate framed and easy fleshing with plenty of muscle relative to his frame. This bull will let you sleep easy during calving and will not set you back on the scale in the fall.

23

The Shorthorn/Simmi Sires Here is the first example of our half blood Shorthorn X Simmental bulls. We have absolutely loved these calves and feel that they will excel on high percentage Red and Black Angus cows. Their mothers were purchased by Harvey from the Hilbrands. He never had the papers transferred so we are guessing a little on age of dam, but if anything we are low. These bulls will add growth and muscle to your calves. These cows never miss and if you want to save some heifers back watch the maternal traits soar in your herd.

This 3/4 blood Shorthorn bull was raised by the Bollum Family in Goodhue. He is out of a 1/2 Shorthorn cow that we sold to them as a replacement. As I was walking through the pasture and noticed this bull I knew he had to be in the sale. The FF Redman calves are easy calving, thick and have lots of look to them. If you have ever wondered what type of bulls sire the calves called “Fancy, Fancy, Fancy” by the auctioneer here is an example.
