All bulls taken home are at the buyers risk for injury or death and we strongly suggest that you purchase insurance on your bulls. Insurance will be available sale day. We will provide free keep until April 1st at which time we will begin charging $1.50/day. We will fertility test the bulls for you prior to delivery for a reasonable cost and will deliver the bulls free within North Dakota and nearby points in Minnesota and will work with everyone else to deliver bulls at the most reasonable cost possible.

Welcome to our fifteenth annual sale. It seems every year goes faster than the last. The spring was a challenge with heavy rain and cold weather. We got as much of the crop in as we could and spent the extra time getting additional cows AI’d. With the warm, dry fall, we were able to get the crops off dry and spent more time in the fields. We haven’t had much snow and what we had melted so the cows are having an easy winter and the hay yard is still full. Due to our expanding grain operation, we strive to keep cows that are low maintenance. At times it seems they don’t get much attention but we still enjoy them. We are still producing cattle like we always have, focusing on performance, muscle, and structural correctness. You won’t see any white faces or fads in our herd. Producers sell by the pound and we strive to sell high performance bulls that will improve their profitability. With feed prices the way they are, Simmentals are the “go to” breed to get pounds on your calves. We have a few new herd sires this year with Mr. J, Renegade, and Storm. The first calves look great and their future looks promising. You will also notice there are more red bulls in the pen this year, but we still have something for everyone. With the fall being warm and dry, we did as much field work as we could and got the calves weaned on October 26. All of our pictures were taken in December while the weather was warm and it was easy to work outside. Since then the bulls have grown a lot and continue to look better every day, so be sure to go to the website for videos and updates. The bulls are being self fed a 14% protein high fiber pellet along with free choice prairie hay. It is the same ration we have used for over 25 years. By using the same ration, we get consistency and can compare performance from year to year. In addition to the cattle and grain operation, the family has been growing and keeping us busy. We have two grandson’s (Hudson and Marcus) and two more grandchildren will be arriving within the next few months. Our son, Joey, and his wife Carla, are expecting their first child (about the time of the sale) and our daughter, Karla, and her husband Marc, are expecting their second child the end of May. We enjoy working with the Olafson’s and believe our bulls compliment each other very well. Dear Friends, With this being our fifteenth annual production sale, we have reached a significant milestone in our breeding program and in our relationship with the many customers with whom we have had the privilege of doing business over the years. Our breeding program and our genetics have continually improved and we have now reached the point where our genetics are getting the attention of many other registered breeders. Our commercial customers will always be the mainstay of our business and we are proud to have many repeat customers over the years from the commercial ranks. In looking back at our first sale catalog, it is amazing to see how the cattle have changed since we first started. The improvements that we have been able to make since our first sale are reflective of the improvements that the Simmental breed overall has made and this is the breed you want to use if you are a commercial cattle producer who wants to move your program forward quickly. It can be argued that Simmental breeders have made more positive progress on the genetics of our cattle than any other breed. As an example of what the Simmental breed can do, we have retained ownership on our steers in past years and it is not uncommon for them to averaged 1,400 lbs. at 13.5 to 14 months of age. We strive to produce cattle that will perform at a high level and produce profitable results for our customers. The cattle industry is seeing unprecedented record prices and the future looks bright. We have the lowest cow inventory in the US since the 1950’s and demand for beef will unquestionably be even higher as time goes on. There has never been a more opportune time to prepare for tomorrow’s strong markets. This Olie son was the lead-off bull in our 2009 sale and sold to Bouchard Livestock in Canada for $15,000. We retained a 1/3 interest in the bull. He is a real powerhouse and has a very rare combination of calving ease, rippling muscle, tremendous thickness and high performance. He is also a rare find in that he had the lowest birth weight at 83 lbs, and the highest adjusted yearling weight at 1530 lbs, of any calf in our 2009 sale. Check out his EPDs and his API and TI indexes and you will know that it will be a challenge to find one anywhere this good. He is homozygous polled and homozygous black.

“Mr. J” is a new herd sire and we have high expectations that he is about to become a sire that a lot of cattlemen are going to use in their program. He weighed 1320 lbs. at 10 months old and has tremendous EPDs. He is homozygous polled and homozygous black.

This son of NLC Patriarch 24P was our second high seller in our 2008 sale and is now in stud at ABS. He had a rare combination of high marbling and an above average ribeye area. His marbling score of 4.7 ratioed at 148 and his ribeye area of 16.12 ratioed 108. He also had an 811 lb adjusted weaning weight, an adjusted yearling weight of 1372 and an actual scrotal measurement of 40 CM. He is homozygous polled and is a non-diluter.

680S has sired many progeny that have been topping sales in the US and Canada. His progeny have tremendous body depth and a lot of natural thickness. He is homozygous polled and homozygous black.

QUICK GUIDE to ASA EPDs and $ INDEXES Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in: All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat. Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Marbling (MRB): Marbling score. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a steak. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)

Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score. $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a+50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes

ASA SUGGESTED SALE TERMS BIDDING AND APPLICABLE LAW: All cattle listed in this offering comply with prevailing sale terms and conditions as set forth by the laws of the state wherein the sale is conducted. There are no warranties, expressed or implied, by either the auctioneer or consignor, except as set forth herein, as to the merchantability of fitness for any particular purpose of any animal offered in this sale. The right to bid or the right to reject the final bid, if done before the hammer falls, is reserved for all sellers unless otherwise announced from the sale block or as prohibited by law in the state wherein the sale is being conducted.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Any change of information other than in the catalog will be announced from the auction block and such announcements shall take precedence over printed material. All statements made from the auction block or those made by the seller (in private treaty) must be documented by seller if requested by the buyer at time of sale.

TERMS: Terms of sale are cash unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been made with the seller previous to the sale of any animal so affected. PURCHASER’S RISK: Each animal becomes the property of and therefore is also the risk of the purchaser as soon as it is sold; except it shall be the obligation of the seller to see that animals are fed and cared for free of charge to purchaser, until loaded for shipment or until the expiration of twenty-four (24) hours after the sale, whichever occurs first.

HEALTH REQUIREMENTS: 1. All cattle entered for sale must meet the health regulations of the state in which they are sold. All other agreements regarding the health of the animal will be between the buyer and seller and should be documented in writing. 2. If sale cattle are returned to the seller for an adjustment, they must meet the health requirements of the state they are returned to.

CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY: Each animal which is catalogued, offered and sold as a registered animal shall have a certificate of registry available at time of sale. When an animal is sold as “eligible for registry” or “registry applied for”, the seller shall be responsible for obtaining the certificate of registry and for the proper transfer of the certificate to the purchaser including full payment of transfer fees.

IDENTIFICATION: Each animal at time of sale must have a readable tattoo or brand corresponding to that shown on the certificate of registration.

AUTHENTICITY OF PEDIGREE: When an animal, through parental validation, is determined to have an ancestry other than that reported on the registration certificate, the buyer shall be entitled to a refund of the purchase price from the seller upon return of the animal to the farm of the seller at the seller’s expense. The animal in question, at the buyer’s option, may be exchanged for another animal of equal value, or if agreeable with the buyer, the seller may have the certificate returned to the buyer. Any adjustment provided herein, if selected, shall absolve the seller from further liability for authenticity of pedigree to the buyer. BREEDING GUARANTEES AND DEFINITIONS:

EMBRYO TRANSFER: 1. Sellers should provide upon request a complete history of embryo transfer activity for any female offered for sale. 2. Withholding information on the existence of frozen embryos at the time of sale would be considered an unethical practice.

HORNED-SCURRED-POLLED: DEFINITIONS: 1. HORNED — An animal with a horn growth affixed to the skull that has or has not been removed. 2. POLLED/SCURRED — An animal with rudimentary horn growth that will not develop into a horn. The rudimentary horn growth may or may not become affixed to the skull at an older age. 3. POLLED — An animal with absence of horn growth. (An animal can have scurs and still be genetically polled.) 4. SMOOTH POLLED — A smooth-polled individual has no scurs and does not develop scurs later in life.

GUARANTEES: 1. If an animal is sold as polled or polled/scurred and proves to be horned, the seller shall be obligated to refund the purchase price upon return of the animal to the farm of the seller at the expense of the seller or may be exchanged for a polled animal of equal value whichever is acceptable to the buyer. The buyer has thirty (30) days from date of sale to notify the seller that an adjustment is in order. 2. If an animal is sold as smooth-polled and proves to be scurred, the seller shall be obligated to refund the price upon return of the animal to the farm of the seller at the expense of the seller or at the buyer’s option shall be exchanged for a smooth-polled animal of equal value. 3. If an animal is sold as polled and develops scurs, the seller will not be obligated to make any adjustment as a scurred animal is considered polled. 4. If an animal is sold as polled and has scurs, it shall be so announced at the time of sale that the animal has scurs. If it is not announced and the buyer finds before the animal leaves the sale premises that the animal has scurs, the buyer must notify the seller of the findings. The seller shall then be obligated to refund the purchase price.

OPTIONS AND PRIVILEGES OF RETURN OR ADJUSTMENT: The following adjustments do not preclude the right of the buyer and seller to mutually agree upon other terms and conditions for settlement of any dispute. 1. All claims for adjustment or refund must be made in writing either six (6) months from the date of sale or no later than when the animal reaches 24 months of age whichever occurs later, with the exception of claims involving misrepresentation of service sire or as otherwise provided herein.

2. In the event an animal is claimed to be a nonbreeder, the animal may be returned to the farm of the seller, at the buyer’s expense, if in good physical condition, and the return is in compliance with the health requirements of the seller’s state. The seller shall be entitled to a six (6) month trial period following the return of the animal in which to prove the animal is a breeder. If at the end of six (6) months the seller is unable to prove the animal is a breeder, the seller shall, at the option of buyer, replace the animal with another equal value or refund the purchase price. Either option shall be deemed full satisfaction and settlement.

2. Bulls are guaranteed to be breeders (definition as the ability to settle healthy cows by the time the bull is 18 months of age) with the exception of: a) Bull calves sold at side of dam b) Injury or disease occurring to the animal after time of sale c) Gross negligence or willful misconduct on the part of the purchaser d) Bulls shown competitively after sale

3. If a female is sold as “safe in calf” to a given sire or sires on a specified date or dates and proves not to be as represented, the buyer is entitled to a refund of the purchase price from the seller upon return of the animal and resulting progeny thereof to the farm of the seller at the seller’s expense.

3. Any guarantees with respect to the ability to freeze semen shall be made by separate agreement between buyer and seller. 4. Safe in calf females are females that have been diagnosed pregnant by a competent veterinarian, and are pregnant at time of sale. 5. A bred female is a female known to have been served by a bull either by natural breeding or artificial insemination, but it does not necessarily mean that the female is safe in calf to that service. 6. A pasture bred female is a female that has been pastured with a designated bull and has been exposed for the time stated, but it does not necessarily mean that this female is safe in calf to that bull. 7. An open female is a non-pregnant animal. 8. Calves sold off their dams (split pairs) shall carry the full breeding guarantee.

PRIVILEGE OF PURCHASER TO EXAMINE: The purchaser of a female animal may have her examined within twenty-four (24) hours after the fall of the hammer and prior to removal from sale premises. The pregnancy status of breeding status of an female so examined, when found not to be as represented at the time of sale, is cause for the female to be returned to the seller as unsold.

4. If a female is sold as “open” and proves to be with calf at time of sale and examined pregnant within sixty (60) days after sale, the buyer may return the animal to the farm of the seller prior to calving for a refund of the full purchase price or for another animal of equal value, whichever acceptable to the buyer. It shall be the obligation of the seller to bear any expenses incurred for transportation of the animal in question to the farm of the seller.

ETHICS:

The Association considers it an unethical practice to offer for sale genetic material or an animal which is known to carry a deleterious genetic factor as defined by ASA without first informing the potential buyer or buyers of this fact. Any advertising, descriptive material or pedigree initiated by the owner of a proven carrier of a detrimental genetic factor as defined by ASA shall include a statement defining the deleterious factor or factors which the animal in question possesses. Any effort to conceal such information is considered to be equally unethical.

LIMITATIONS OF OBLIGATIONS: 1. If the aforementioned suggested terms and conditions are adopted, they should constitute a contract between the buyer and seller for each animal sold under these terms, as such, should be binding upon both parties. Animals resold following purchase in a sale shall constitute a separate transation and the privileges and obligations of the original two parties connected thereto are not covered by the terms and conditions of sale. 2. The American Simmental Association, its directors or employees are not in any way responsible or liable for enforcing the suggested terms and conditions of any agreement involving transactions between buyers and sellers.
