Dear Friends, It is with sincere pleasure that we invite you to the 16th Annual Sale. We are excited about the offering as it represents the culmination of 30 years of breeding beginning with one show heifer and about a dozen other cows added throughout the years. Our main goal has been to produce bulls for the commercial cattlemen. Every pedigree includes sires representing some of the most top producing bulls in the breed. We continue to breed based on balanced EPD’s and visual evaluation of structural soundness and eye appeal. We select bulls with positive scrotal EPD’s to ensure fertility for their sons as well as for their daughters. Disposition of the cattle is of upmost importance. There are enough good young ones that you don’t need to chase a wild one. As you review the catalog, you will see that some of the cattle do not have adjusted 205 weaning weights. When the older calves were weaned, their day of age would not fall in the range to compute the adjusted weight. Actual weights as of the end of October were included on the older calves. Also, you will note we are not offering heifers this year. We will be offering heifers for sale private treaty. If you are interest please give us a call. Ranking: In the footnotes several of the lots have been recognized for being in the top 25% of a trait of the non-parent bulls/cows for the breed. The American Angus Association updates the EPDs weekly. The database is then group into four different categories. The categories are Current bulls and Current cows with at least one calf recorded. The other two categories are non-parent bulls and cows which do not have a calves recorded. EPDs listed in the catalog are as 2/6/2012.

Meal: A complimentary, dinner will be served sale day by Farmers and Ranchers Café at 5:30 p.m. Wintering of Bulls: Bulls can return to the farm, at the buyer’s option, at a cost of $3.00 per day per bull. Buyer must obtain mortality insurance on bulls returning to the farm. Information and details for insurance will be available sale day. Inspection of Cattle: Cattle are available for your inspection at the farm until Sunday, March 11th, at which time the cattle will be located at Farmers and Ranchers.. Herd Health: The bulls in the sale have been preweaned and weaning vaccinated for respiratory disease, including pasteurella. They will be poured and dewormed before the sale. Bulls have been examined for breeding soundness and passed a semen test. All cattle will be accompanied by proper health certificate for immediate shipment. Genetic Defects: All individuals that sale have been determined free of known genetic defects through a combination of DNA and pedigree assessment. Additional Information: A supplemental sheet will be available sale day with pelvic and scrotal measurements. Guarantee: We guarantee that all breeding cattle, sold in this sale are fertile to the best of our knowledge. If they are injured anytime during the first breeding season after they are purchased so as to make them functionally infertile in the case of bulls, we will provide you with a satisfactory replacement if available or issue you credit equal to the your purchase minus salvage value. That credit may be used toward the purchase of any animal in a future sale. We must be notified before you cull the infertile animal. We would suggest that normal care still needs to be exercised toward these animals, especially yearling bulls not to allowed to get too thin.

EPD Terms

1 LJ Pioneer Y002 Calved 12/23/2010

Calving Ease Direct (CE), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD(BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

For use of a bull on virgin heifers, the (CE) and (BW) EPDs are a primary consideration.

Weaning Weight EPD(WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Weight EPD(YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. If you background your calves, concentration should be placed on yearling weight (YW) EPD.

Calving Ease Maternal(CEM), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in firstcalf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. Maternal Milk EPD(Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. If you keep replacement heifers, emphasis should be placed on Milk(Milk), Calving Ease Maternal(CEM), and Scrotal EPD’s.
