Simply explained: If you are selling your calves at weaning and retain replacement females, or background cattle, $Wean has more economic impact on you than $Beef. For those who retain ownership and finish your calves, $Beef will have a great economic impact on you. Keep in mind that both indexes are multi-trait indexes and combine many traits of economic importance. All cattle are eventually harvested so it is still important to incorporate both traits. If the next link in the chain profits with your calves, they are likely to continue paying a premium for those genetics. Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth transmitted to the calf, maternal milk, and mature cow size. If you select for higher $W animals, the results will generally be more easily growth, moderate mature size, above average (though typically not extreme) milk, and heavier calf weaning weights. Higher $W females get these things right and are constructed in a more desirable package. USING $W AS A SELECTION TOOL Not every high $W cow will be stamped out of a cookie-cutter mold, of course. $W can and should be used as a genetic selection tool to help build increased profit potential into a cow herd. It will pay producers to pursue higher $W cattle, while at the same time keeping a sharp eye on other individual traits and EPDs, and $Values they deem important in their operations. Doing so can help you build a cow herd that does most everything right. HOW TO USE FEEDLOT VALUE ($F), GRID VALUE (G) AND BEEF VALUE ($B) In contrast to $W, the Feedlot ($F), Grid ($G) and Beef ($B) $Values are terminal indexes, in that no maternal components are included. These Indexes assume all calves go to market and no replacement females are retained. All of these indexes are reported in dollars per head and can be used to compare animals on how future progeny are expected to perform for post-weaning feedlot and carcass merit. The $F and $G include revenue and expense components in their derivation and are pulled together to form $B. $F is strictly post-weaning feedlot merit where Yearling Weight EPD along with its relationship to Weaning Weight EPD are key genetic components. Genetics for gain generates revenue. Then the indexes include adjustments for

$B is an overall $Value for post-weaning feedlot and carcass value. It combines $F and $G as a selection tool for quality, red meat yield and pounds produced. The $B is not simply the sum of $F and $G. $Values are business-minded and in the language of economics. They have a great deal to offer the commercial bull buyer in terms of providing a multi-trait selection tool. It is important to remind Angus bull buyers these are one of various tools they use to make their operations successful. Selection indexes will continue to become more widely accepted across the seedstock industry as a means to identify genetics for use in commercial program. What are EPDs? Average EPDs Angus (Non-Parent Bulls) CED +5, BEPD +1.8, WEPD +49, YEPD +86, RADG +.18, Scrotal +.81, Doc +12, Milk +23, CW +30, Marb +.49, RE +.45. Calving Ease Direct (CED) - is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. If you do not have heifers to breed and just need a bull or cows that have calved before, most Angus bulls are acceptable for use on mature cows from a birth weight standpoint. Weaning Weight EPD - is a prediction of a bull’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny. For example, Bull A has a Weaning Weight EPD of +60 pounds and Bull B has a Weaning Weight EPD of +40 pounds. At weaning, Bull A’s calves will average 20 pounds heavier. Yearling EPD - Yearling Weight EPD takes into account both pre-weaning and post weaning growth. Yearling weight is the most heritable of all growth traits. You can expect bulls with high yearling EPDs to produce fast gaining calves. If Bull A has a Yearling EPD of +90 and Bull B has a Yearling Weight EPD of +60, Bull A’s calves will average 40 pounds heavier than Bull’s at one year of age.
