his month marks the one year anniversary since I began my new adventure with the Nebraska Angus Association as Secretary/Manager. During this last year there were many first time experiences such as creating a news magazine, attending Husker Harvest Days, organizing the annual meeting, and meeting the many great people within the Angus community. Most of you may not know that my original goal in life was to become a veterinarian and work in a large and small animal practice in rural Nebraska. After a long journey trying to achieve this goal I came to realize that a veterinary career was not meant to be. Through a leap of faith and trusting my instinct I chose to move home and pursue other goals. As fate would have it, I then I met my husband and we have two beautiful children. Then another act of fate occurred and I was able to join the Nebraska Angus Association which aligns with my passion for animals and livestock. As I edit this magazine and I reflect on my past I never imagined myself in this occupation and being a voice for the Angus breed. It has been a great honor to represent, work, and be a member of the Angus family! I hope you enjoy the new look of the 2020 Nebraska Angus News magazine and our website as it develops. In December the Association held the 2019 Annual Meeting and Banquet in Kearney, Nebraska, at the Holiday Inn/Younes Convention Center. To begin the meeting the Association hosted speakers Dan Moser and Dr. Patsy Houghton, both presenters offered exceptional information for beef producers. Check out page 42 for a recap on these presentations. The annual meeting was held following the educational sessions recapping all 2019 events, presentation of the Association budget, new board members were voted in, and several items of new business were addressed. Rounding out the evening was the social and banquet with steak dinner. Several auctions were held; the semen auction benefiting the Nebraska Junior Angus, a silent auction benefiting the Nebraska Angus Auxiliary, and the directory page auction selecting the premium page advertisers. Several people and organizations were recognized; Nebraska Angus Association Officers and Directors, Nebraska Angus Auxiliary members, National Junior Angus Director/Nebraska Junior Angus President, Nebraska Junior Angus Advisors, Nebraska Angus Queen, and Producer of the Year. And to round out the evening guests were awarded many door prizes. It was a wonderful event, and we look forward to the 2020 Annual Meeting and Banquet which is scheduled for December 5th, 2020. Events in the next couple months are the National Western Stock Show in Denver and the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic in Kearney. Each event will have new aspects including updated facilities for the Stock Show and changes to the show and sale schedule for the Classic. Please follow the Nebraska Angus Association on Facebook, visit www.nebraskaangus.org, and continue to watch your emails for updates, news releases, and other events announcements. Calving time and spring sale season are soon to be in full swing! A sale calendar can be found on page 52. Please remember to utilize the Nebraska Angus Association resources to help share updates on sale information, postponements due to weather, or other announcements. I am eager to serve the Nebraska Angus Association members, and I look forward to attending many member sales this spring! Margo Lehn NAA, Secretary/Manager (402) 760-0386 info@nebraskaangus.org

Nebraska Angus Association President Danny Poss, Scotia 308/541-0417
Fellow Angus Breeders,
W
hen deciding to take on a new position, such as President of your Association, writing a letter is certainly not the most desirable part of this agreement. While I’m honored to sit as the new President of the Nebraska Angus Association, I must ask you ahead of time to understand that writing is not my specialty. I look forward to having the opportunity to share a few of my thoughts, but mostly I am grateful for the ability to give back some time to our Association and the people, who have done so much for my family and the Angus breed. While we close the books on the year 2019, we can hopefully look forward to better days. While the last year proved to be one of the most challenging that I can remember, it is with great optimism and enthusiasm that I turn my calendar to 2020. It certainly seems like just yesterday that we were ringing in the new millennium with skepticism and hesitation. I remember dropping off our then, one and two-year old boys at the neighbor’s house, so that my wife, Kristi and I could celebrate the historic evening with a few friends. Out of all the scenarios that crossed my mind that night, the one that didn’t come to my awareness was how quickly the next twenty years would pass. Many things have changed in the past two decades. The progression of technology and genomics has grown almost as rapidly as those toddler boys grew into young men.

Every year, the member is given new tools to advance their progress within the Angus breed, which in turn, voids the opportunity for complacency. With this progression, comes responsibility. A responsibility to get the most value out of the tools we have been given. I would encourage the registered breeders to keep turning in their information. If we are going to continue to progress the Angus female in the direction of being profitable, we need the phenotypic data. Doing our part as a registered member gives the cattleman an opportunity to have quality tools at his fingertips to enhance his selections and make for better breeding decisions. In closing, I would like to thank Brett Weers for his time and dedication as last year’s President. In a time of busyness, I have learned that figuring out a way to be more present for our future generation of Angus breeders has never been more critical. Little boys are becoming grown men almost as quickly as we can turn the calendar page. Brett, I thank you for the sacrifices you made this last year, to better our future generations! To all of us, let’s make 2020 a year to remember for the BETTER!

s we embark upon 2020, we are cautiously optimistic about the feel of the cattle market. We know this business is cyclical by nature, but it’s sure nice to be on the upside of the curve. And no matter how slight that increment may be, we will take it. With all of the bull sales taking place in Nebraska during these early months of year, there is a myriad of opportunities for commercial producers to find bulls that meet their needs. The American Angus Association staff works diligently to provide all of us with better information so that we can describe our bulls more accurately for our customers. The amount of information at our disposal, and the accuracy with which it is calculated, improves every year. At the annual convention in November in Reno, AAA CEO, Mark McCully delivered a message that paid tribute to the history of the breed, while also recognizing the value of innovation so that, in his words, “The membership can be placed in the best possible position for success.”

He also acknowledged the variety of needs of the membership due to herd size, location, customer base, etc. He emphasized that the staff are continually attempting to meet those members’ needs on an individual basis so that all are served well. The convention in Reno provided a number of educational opportunities for the attendees by providing very interesting speakers and an extensive offering of workshops and breakout sessions. Next year’s convention in Kansas City will be even more convenient for those of us in Nebraska, so if it works for you, I’d sure encourage you to attend.
All the best for a great 2020!

Greetings Angus Friends!
T
he holiday season has once again crept up on me! With all the activities taking place this year, the Annual Banquet is one I always look forward to attending. The weekend was packed with activities for both young and old. It is always a great time to reconnect with old friends and see the younger generations getting involved! The Nebraska Angus Auxiliary had their year end meeting at the Rustic Patch in Kearney. Topics of discussion were elections and final preparations for the evening which consisted of silent auction, vet box fundraiser and assisting Margo with registrations. Discussion to help with the 2021 Junior Nationals in Grand Island was decided to host the Queens Luncheon and assist with hospitality. We are also working on scholarships to be awarded at the Nebraska Cattlemen's Classic in February. So please watch our website, Facebook or contact one of us for more information. Committee reformation will take place after the first of the year and would welcome you as a new member to help with any of them..Fundraising-ScholarshipQueens. During all this discussion, we enjoyed refreshments and painted calves(Black angus of course!) and snowmen. What a wonderful place for a meeting! Thank you Sonya!!! Our fundraisers were both held Saturday evening at the annual banquet. Both the vet box and silent auction were a great success for the
Auxiliary. There was a great array of items for everyone to bid on. A BIG thank you goes out to all of those who purchased items and also who donated them! We appreciate everyones support in helping us build our finances for scholarships and other activities we support. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the 2020 officer team, Laurie DethlefsPresident; Heather Smith-Vice President; Justine Hahn-Secretary; Lynnette Nelson-Treasurer; Stephanie Schafer-Advisor. Hello Angus Friends!
O
n behalf of the Nebraska Junior Angus Association, I’d like to wish everyone a happy holidays and a successful and healthy calving season. Last month we wrapped up the Nebraska Junior Angus Association Winter Show in Kearney. It was a very successful turn out and the juniors had the opportunity to get the first show of the season under their belt. The Supreme Champion Breeding Animal was awarded to the Champion Bred and Owned heifer that was exhibited by Kyra Meyer. This early January, I will have the opportunity to travel to Wooster, OH for the Youth Beef Leaders Seminar that is hosted by Certified Angus Beef. I am excited to share this opportunity with fellow Angus junior board members; as well as other breed association board members. Following the show calendar, the next show is the National Western Stock Show in Denver, CO. I look forward to seeing everyone there as I will be working the ring. NAA Presidential Spotlight
B
rett Weers Nebraska Angus Association outgoing President Brett Weers resides near Diller, Nebraska. He was born in Beatrice, Nebraska, and grew up in the community of Diller. His father Greg has farmed and ranched his entire life and his mother Tamara has worked in Beatrice for First National Bank of Omaha for over 40 years. Brett’s brother Jared also has stayed in the community and works at the Beatrice Community Hospital as a radiology technician. Brett grew up with cattle and the Weers family have been in the Angus breed for over 20 years. During that time they have raised cattle of the Dixie Erica, Royal Lady, Manor, Mignonne, Elga Erica, and Pure Pride families.
When asked what is the most rewarding part of being a member of the Association board and serving a role as officer Brett replied with being able to meet new people. While being involved in the Association he has met new producers and representatives in the Angus industry from all over and without this opportunity he would not have accomplished that. Making these connections has helped him as a producer broaden his knowledge and learn many new aspects of the Angus breed. For advice to our new members Brett mentioned to always keep a good work ethic in your business and to be honest and fair to fellow members. This business can be rewarding in very many ways, but you need

to have good relationships with others. One thing he was told before he was asked to become a board member was to always keep the best interest of the entire membership in mind. Being on this board for him was never about personal gain, but to provide ideas and help build the Association for the future. Stay involved with all the programs the Association has to offer and help build it up for our younger generations to come. When he was Vice President he was part of a big decision for the Association, which was hiring a new Secretary/Manager. As a team we got that successfully accomplished and are very happy with the work Margo has done. One future goal Brett stated he would like to see in the Association is a classified ad section added to the Association website and their social media page. This would allow any member to promote their cattle online, whether they be registered, commercial, or private treaty. It has been discussed amongst the board and he hoped it would work out in the future.
Nebraska Producer of the Year
J
ohn & Julie Kraye
The 2019 Producers of the year, John and Julie Kraye operate Kraye Angus near Mullen, Nebraska. Kraye Angus is located in the heart of the Nebraska Sandhills. The Sandhills provide a very unique environment to work with. Many ranching practices that work well in other parts of the country, are not possible in this region due to the fragility of the soil. Cattle that are raised in the Sandhills have to be adaptable to the harsh weather conditions that can range from extreme cold to high heat and humidity. Kraye Ranch is primarily a cow/calf operation that runs approximately 700 registered Angus cows. The Kraye Ranch is around 12,000 acres and was formed by John’s grandfather, Ernst Kraye. In the 1920’s he purchased the main ranch and started adding adjoining acres over the years, as they became available. Fred Kraye was born and raised on the ranch. In 1953 he purchased his first Angus cows, mainly to keep his cattle herd separate from his dad’s Herefords. Angus cows have been the heart and soul of the ranch ever since. Since 1984, John and Julie Kraye have been the primary care takers of the cow herd and have lived right on the ranch with their children, David and Helen. In 2001, John and Julie purchased the ranch from John’s parents, Fred and Theresa. After David graduated from high school, he went on to college for a while. Then returned home to the ranch in 2005. Since then he has been a part of the daily routine and decision making on the ranch. David and his wife Stacy Layher who is employed at Farm Credit Services of America now live on the east end of the ranch. Helen chose to follow her Chemistry degree and lives in Red Oak, Iowa, where she is the Quality Control Supervisor for Bunge, a corn flour plant.
Kraye Angus is a family operation, our nephew Brad Wright has worked for the ranch since he was in high school and after college graduation he became a full time member of the ranch team. Over the years Kraye Angus has participated in the AHIR program thru the American Angus Association and have kept thorough records on the cows and calves. They have used EPD’s to develop more marketable calves, while maintaining a balanced cow herd. An intense culling process is used on the herd to evaluate their production and profitability. It has been a Kraye policy to synchronize and artificially inseminate the entire herd, including the yearling heifers and the mature cows. This has helped them diversify the genetic makeup of their cow herd. It is a continuing challenge to match up the genetic traits of their cows with the genetics of the leading sires of the Angus breed. In the summer, with seven center pivots Kraye Ranch is a haying operation. The pivots are in a rotation with alfalfa, with bluegrass being their worst invader. When the grass starts taking over the pivot, it gets worked and planted to rye or millet. This system has worked well for the ranch because it gives them a variety of feeds to mix with the rations. This also gives the cows a more balanced ration, than just straight alfalfa hay. One of the seven pivots is planted to irrigated grass that is harvested twice and the after growth is used to wean the calves on. Their fall cattle work such as pre-conditioning and weaning of the calves may begin at different times each year as it depends on the moisture

they have received during the summer months. The dry years force the Kraye’s to wean early, with the wetter years, they will wean the calves at a more traditional time. They wean all of the calves in the pastures using a portable corral system. The cows and calves are sorted. The calves are then turned back into the pasture and the cows are hauled to the corrals at the home place. For weaning this has been the most successful and stress-free system. At Kraye Angus, ranching is what they do. Their cattle are their livelihood, hobby, recreation and their passion. Not every year is easy, but they try to stay focused and raise the best cattle they possibly can. All of their cattle including bulls, heifers and cows are hard-working cattle that must pay their own way, just as any herd of commercial cattle would be expected to do. In the heart of the Sandhills the ranch is a harsh task-master, but the Kraye’s are native Sandhillers and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. They hope to see you at the annual bull sale, the first Saturday in April!

ngus foundation scholarship applications open noW The Angus Foundation continues to support the next generation of agriculturists. Scholarship applications are now available for college students associated with the Angus breed. This past year, the Angus Foundation awarded $227,700 in scholarships at the 2019 National Junior Angus Show alone, and next year will be no different. The Angus Foundation offers scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students each year as a way to help Angus youth achieve their educational goals and offset the continually rising costs of tuition at higher education institutions. “We have a responsibility to support the next generation of agriculturalists here at the Angus Foundation,” said Rod Schoenbine, Angus Foundation director of development. “With education costs being higher than ever, we want to help students in their educational endeavors, and awarding scholarships is a key factor.” Today, countless past junior Angus members have benefitted from the financial support of Angus Foundation-funded scholarships. This year, five past scholarship recipients

019 annual Meeting The 2019 Nebraska Angus Association Meeting and Banquet was held in Kearney, Nebraska at the Holiday Inn/Younes Convention Center on December 7th, 2019. The afternoon events included two educational speakers and the annual meeting. The first speaker Dan Moser, President of Angus Genetics Incorporated presented his presentation titled “The Update on Angus $Values”. He discussed the new beef value ($B), new maternal weaned calf value ($M), and the new combined value ($C). Following him was Dr. Patsy Houghton with Heartland Cattle

In her lecture she gave producers an overview on what she has found best in developing a successful heifer program. Some items discussed were fertility, longevity, immune response, flesh ability, and disposition. Rounding out the day was the evening social and banquet. During the banquet the Nebraska Angus Auxiliary organized a silent auction that offered many unique items and they drew the winner for their cattle cooler raffle. Angus Family News From our mailbox! Dear Younes Convention Center, The Nebraska Angus Association would like to send our sincere thanks for arranging an extraordinary facility to hold our Annual Meeting and Banquet. We appreciate your hospitality and punctual actions in order to have the facility operating in time of our event. The meeting rooms, banquet room, and meal were top notch and enjoyed by everyone. With all your hard work it made it a stress free weekend. Thank you and we look forward to working with you in the future! Nebraska Angus Association
Dear Nebraska Angus Association Officers, Board and Members, I would like to send my heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you for your help, patience, and generosity during my first year as the Secretary/Manager. For everyone, last year was full of challenges and I just want to commend everyone on their hard work. I am excited for the future of the Nebraska Angus Association and to represent all of you and the Angus breed. Sincerely, Margo Lehn, Secretary/Manager, Nebraska Angus Association Dear Nebraska Angus Association, We would like to thank your committee for choosing us for the honor of Producer of the Year! It
means a great deal to us to be given this award from our peers, who all work as hard in the cattle industry as we do. This award is for all of us, our cattle would not be where they are today, without the influence of David’s knowledge of pedigrees and his complete dedication to making profitable genetic matches. We are ranchers because it’s what we love to do, and we raise Angus cattle because they are the best of the best. 2019 has been so full of challenges, that it has stretched the emotional reserves of everyone in agriculture, so thank you for this honor that makes us feel like all of our efforts were worth it. Thank you again, for this tremendous honor. John and Julie Kraye Kraye Angus
