Welcome Everyone to Our 12th Annual Bull Sale!

First off we’d like to say a big THANK YOU to the Hakkesteegt family for their time and dedication over the past years in being a part of this sale. As time goes on things always change and we wish the Kirlene crew all the best in the future.

As you look through the pages of the catalog this year you’ll see both consistency and diversity in the bulls. We strive to produce bulls that will fit everyone’s needs, whether you need a bull to throw in with heifers that will let you sleep easy at calving time, a straight performance bull to add pay weight to your calf crop, or a bull that produces very functional females. Whatever your needs you will certainly find one in this offering. Year after year we do our best to source new genetics that will fit in our programs and will compliment the commercial producer’s herds and the beef industry as a whole.

The bulls are developed with health and longevity top of mind, being from fully vaccinated cow herds and grown out slowly on a forage based diet along with plenty of room for exercise. These bulls are built to get cows bred! All bulls will sell with a breeding soundness evaluation, as well as, their blackleg booster.

We invite everyone to come see the bulls in their home environment and to take the time to see their mothers as well. We’d be happy to discuss our breeding programs and help find a bull that will best fit your needs. Please don’t hesitate to give us a call to discuss the bulls or the sale. Sale day phone numbers can be found on page 2 and once again this year the sale will be broadcast on LiveauctionsTV, so you can watch and bid with confidence from the comfort of home if you can’t make it to the sale.

We look forward to seeing everyone on March 11th in Cobden! Come early and enjoy lunch with us on sale day.

Sincerely,

The Black Families

BIRTH WEIGHT & CALVING EASE

University studies in Wyoming and data from Montana and Colorado lend credence to the following conclusions:

1. The birth weight itself influences calving ease by 65%.

2. The female has 60-70% influence on birth weight of her calf.

3. The bull has 30-40% influence on birth weight of his progreny.

4. Pelvic measurement and angle as well as the shape of the calf have 35-40% influence on calv ing ease.

5. Length of gestation greatly affects birth weight. A fetus can gain over one pound per day in the in the last days of gestation.

6. Weather and temperature the last 30 days affect the length of gestation.

7. Size and maturity of the cow influence calving ease.

Most commercial producers do not take birth weights. Guessing is as inaccurate as driving with a broken speedometer – what’s thought to be 55 mph may in fact be 65 or 70 mph, and what’s thought to be 70-80 lb may actually be 80-90 lb.

Remember, everything is relevant. Increased growth, frame and performance will increase BW. A longer bodied calf with weigh more. If a calf is expected to have genetics for growth, it will display this prior to birth as well as after. As a rule of thumb, it takes a calf weighing 85 lb at birth to finish at 1200-1250 lb. A cow should easily give birth to a calf weight 8% of her own body weight. Thus a 1200 lb cow should give birth to a 96 lb calf with ease.

Continued selection for light birth weights will ultimately reduce the mature sizes and performance of your cattle.
