• On January 1, 1914, the world’s first scheduled passenger airline service took off, operating between St. Petersburg and Tampa. The St.

Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line was a short-lived endeavor at only four months but it paved the way for today’s daily transcontinental flights. • José Martí Park, located at 1303 East 8th Avenue in Ybor City, is technically Cuban soil. The 0.14 acre tract of land has been owned by the Republic of Cuba since 1956. The park is a tribute to José Martí, a 19th-century Cuban freedom fighter from Havana. Known as a patriot, writer, poet, lawyer and orator, Martí’s ideas and actions were a universal inspiration for the Cuban people. • Ybor City takes its name from Vicente Martinez Ybor, who started things rolling with a cigar making business in 1850s

Cuba. In 1885, after one Cuban revolution too many erupted, he bought 40 sandy acres near Tampa and turned it into the cigar capital of the world. In 1929, the factory at Ybor City rolled approximately 500 million cigars! • Dunedin is the oldest town in Pinellas County and began as a remote settlement in 1852. It was originally named Jonesbor. Two

Scottish immigrants renamed the settlement to Dunedin in 1882. The name Dunedin comes from the Sottish-Gaelic form of Edinburgh, Scotland, Dùn Èideann . • Safety Harbor used to be home to a sizable Native

American population. Philippe Park pays homage to this with its monument to the Tocabaga tribe. The Temple Mound is historically recognized as having once been used for religious purposes by the tribe. Founded in 1948, the park is the oldest in the county. It spans some 122 acres. • Tiki Gardens was a South Seas Polynesian theme park in Indian Shores. The park, which opened in 1964, was closed in the 1980s. It was sold to Pinellas County in 1990 and was turned into a public beach access parking lot. Although the Tiki Gardens were a big part of tourism in Pinellas County, the only thing left is the sign at the entrance letting visitors know that they’ve arrived at the Tiki
