Braiding basics

Braiding can seem a daunting task at first, but with BRAIDED’s nifty how-to guides, you’ll be taming those tresses in no time. From the classic french to the fishtail, there are so many types of braid

out there. Here are three of the coolest braids to help you standout from the crowd. In just four easy steps you’ll have created your own groovy braid.

The french braid 1.

Take a thin section of hair from the top of the head. Split this into three even sections.

3.

Cross the right section underneath the middle section.

2.

Take the left section and cross it underneath the middle section. The left section will now be situated in the middle.

4.

Add hair to the left section, and again, cross it under the middle section. Repeat this with the right section, and keep going until the plait is complete

the 5 strander 1.

Split your hair into five even sections.

3.

Taking the new first strand each time, repeat step two.

2.

Using the first strand, weave under and then over the other strands. This strand will become the fifth strand.

4.

Repeat until the length of the hair is braided, remembering to pull the strands tightly to keep the braid in shape.

The fishtail 1.

Split the hair into two sections

2.

Take a small piece of hair from the outside of the left section, and cross it over, joning it with the right section.

3.

Take a small piece of hair from the outside of the newly formed right section, and cross it over. Repeat these steps until the whole length of your hair is plaited.

ALL ABOUT THE HEAT Your hair may be something you take for granted, but the reality is, it needs TLC just like the rest of us. Without proper care, your hair can become dry, and you’ll end up with dull, brittle hair. It’s not nice

to hear, but heat is your hair’s worst enemy. “Minus the GHD’s?” I hear you ask.... I’m afraid not. That goes for your curling wand and hairdryer too by the way. Tempting as it may be, too much heat will

suck the moisture out of your hair. But don’t panic! If ditching the straighteners would result in frizz-city, there are many products available on the market to help you on your journey back to straight, sleek hair, without the addition of heat. Although, if you think you’ve tried EVERYTHING, and nothing is taming that frizz, the choice of heat protecting products is bigger than you

would think. From nourishing creams to protecting sprays, there’s something to fit nicely into everyone’s haircare routine if you do need to use heat. The aisles may become a bit of a blur though whilst you stand trying to decipher if Garnier will be better than Schwarzkopf, but not to worry, BRAIDED has narrowed down the masses of products available, and rated them along the way.

John Frieda Frizz Ease ‘3 Day Straight’ Spray Rating: 3/5 Price: £6.99 No effort involved! Just spray generously onto wet hair and leave your hair to dry naturally. No heat and straight hair? The future has arrived.

Batiste Dry Shampoo Rating: 5/5 Price: £3.49 (250ml) Got that third-day greasy hair feeling? Don’t wash your hair and frazzle it with the hairdryer. Instead, get a few more days of fresh looking hair by spraying this onto your roots! Also gives volume, so no upside down blow-dry’s needed for that extra oomph!

Our Picks V05 ‘Smoothly Does It’ Heat Defence Frizz Free Creme Rating: 3/5 Price: £2.79 A small squeeze of this will nourish split ends, tame frizz and protect your hair from heat, all in one go!

John Frieda Frizz Ease ‘Smooth Start’ Shampoo and Conditioner Rating: 4/5 Price: £3.49 ea. This clever duo leaves your hair much less frizzy and smelling amazing too!

the lazy bun The lazy bun is a combination of effortless chic and some form of wizardry. What makes the lazy bun so special is that it gives the illusion of hair-shoved-on-top-of-head, yet it is particularly tricky to master. However, BRAIDED has got it down to a tee. Four steps and you will have the perfect lazy bun on your hands! P.S. this will work best if your hair isn’t freshly washed, a bit of grease, ahem... texture, helps it to stay in place. But shhhh!

Pull your hair up into a high pony tail. Backcomb your hair at this point for a fuller, messier looking bun!

Secure the hair with a second bobble. If you have really thick or long hair you may need a couple of bobbles to secure your hair.

Pull your hair around the bobble into a donut shape.

Hide any loose bits of hair using grips. Loosen parts of the bun until you have the look you want. And voila!

festival fashion We all know the struggle with festivals. No plugs, no showers, no mirrors. British weather means it’ll most likely rain, which results in frizz, but then there’s no plugs so... I’ll stop there. Sometimes it’s hard to understand why we put ourselves through the torturous experience that is a British festival. But then you remember the world famous acts, having the time of your life in a huge field surrounded by your friends, and of course, the fashion opportunities a festival holds. The limited resources on offer at festivals call for one thing - experimentation. And you’re not going to get judged for at least one of two reasons; everyone else is in exactly the same position as you, or they’re all too drunk to notice anyway. The fact that your slightly frizzy hair is pinned back with daisy clips is not at the forefront of everyone else’s mind. And you never know, a fashion risk taken at a festival may become one of your staple looks. Just remember that you can wash your hair when you get back home... so no excuses to miss

that one out. Festival etiquette states that you should be prepared for absolutely anything. The rain making everything in your, supposedly waterproof, tent soaking wet? Be prepared. That pair of denim shorts you were going to wear all weekend rip right down the middle? Be prepared. The guy in front of you at the Kings of Leon set tips his cider-black right on your head and you cant shower? Be prepared! Okay, it is rare that the latter will happen, but I’m sure out of some 90,000 people, it happens to someone. Anyway, back to being prepared. Hair-wise, you’re going to need lots of accessories. I mean lots. You do not know what kink, flick or curl your hair is going to throw at you. So lots of bobbles, grips, clips, headbands, scrunchies and even a hat for if everything goes down hill. Head jewellery however, is not for this occasion. It may seem like a good idea when you see it on the Mannequin in Topshop. But after what seems like a 20 mile hike to a mediocre spot to camp, said jewellery will have filtered down to the bottom

of which ever of the 100 bags it is in, it will be tangled and most probably, broken. Don’t bother. Next on the list of necessities is dry shampoo. Forget your bffl Katie, who ALWAYS knows what you’re thinking, and you’re like, omg, totally the same person - dry shampoo will be your bestie for this weekend. It will de-grease, volumnise, and basically give you a brand new barnet on day three when you’re running out of accessories. Take a friend with you who can braid. When your hair has reached the no-going-back stage on the grease-o-meter, braiding is now your saviour. When your fringe will not cooperate, a french plait across the front of your head and the rest of your hair pulled back into a messy bun will always be a good idea. And at-least if it rains (which is likely), or that drink does get poured on your head, whilst everyone else’s perfected curls and quiffs are dropping at the speed of light, you will be standing strong.

make your hair grow... now! Frustrated that your hair isn’t growing? Following these steps will encourage hair growth, and before long your locks should be noticeably longer.

›patience is a virtue The most important thing to remember whilst waiting for your hair to grow is that it is going to take time! There isn’t a remedy in the world that would enable you to wake up in the morning with locks resembling Rapunzel. Becoming impatient will only make it seem as if the whole ordeal is taking even longer, so chill out. Your hair is, slowly but surely, growing.

›snip away

This is an ironic one. Surely if you want to grow your hair you’ll skip the haircuts? Wrong. Not getting your haircut will result in split ends, where the hair follicle splits up the length of the hair, leaving your hair shorter and thinner. Haircuts are recommended every 8-12 weeks to keep your hair strong and healthy.

› mask it

Hair masks are a great way to inject some much needed moisture into your hair. They can be picked up super cheap at your local drugstore, or can be made out of items you have lying around the house!

Ouch! and replace them with a silky alternative. Cotton pillowcases encourage the hair to get tangled, whereas silk helps promote no knots all night long. Conditioner could be classed as even more important than shampoo. It is needed to lock in the hairs moisture, and stop it from drying out. ›Flash of cold

A bit like the pores on your face, strands of hair open up when being rinsed using hot water. In a similar way to splashing your face with cold water to close the pores again, rinsing your hair with cold water at the end of a shower or bath will close all the hair follicles, locking in the goodness.

›ditch the towel

There are few things your poor hair dislikes more than having a coarse towel vigorously rubbed against it. The baby hairs around your hairline are particularly weak, and this action can cause them to fall out, resulting in thinner hair.

›bobble blunder

There’s not much worse for those delicate strands than a bad quality bobble. Head for bobbles that don’t have the hair-shredding metal fastening. A fully elastic bobble will help keep your hair intact, helping you to grow it long!
