SIDE BY SIDE TYPE URBAN REGENERATION LOCATION ROMA STATUS ACADEMIC - THESIS ADVISOR ANTONINO SAGGIO YEAR 2015 TEAM L.CAVALLO, G.RUBINO, S.DI MARCO The research and design work was conducted within Antonino Saggio’s Chair project ‘Tevere Cavo’ (www.arc1.uniroma1.it/saggio/TevereCavo/Official. htm) which explores the systemic role of the river in the process of Rome city regeneration, interventing on its Urban Voids. SideBySide embraces the Chair’s guidelines and explores one of the city largest - although mostly underestimated - void: the river itself and its banks, operating through a series of synergistic micro-interventions that cooperate for the reactivation and reconnection of a key reality that has been forgotten and left in decay. The action along the banks follows a direct in-depth analysis of the current status of the territory, allowing punctual design opportunities that are locally attuned and coherent with the vocations acquired in time by the areas. In this scenario all the previous TC thesis projects acquire a strategic role for a systemic approach and are therefor included in the analysis and design operations. The project is supported by three theoretical bases: the ‘experience’ - the Seine’s case study for the social-economic reactivation of the riverside; the ‘strategy’ - which looks at Biomimicry as a support for the development of ‘zero-waste’ processes; the ‘tactic’ - which finds in the example of Hafencity a dynamic approach to the flooding phenomenon. The proposal moves on different levels: a general system to garantee mobility, connection and the maintainance of the ecologic reality; the identification of strategic areas for puntual requalification according to the principle of minimal intervention; the choice of three main chances of design to work as ‘magnets’ capable of effecting wider areas: Skate+; TeverePuntoEat; Scalo De Pinedo. The three focus designs respond to the specific needs and vocations of the different areas - understanding and taking the offered chances and making their acquired character explicit - while taking part in a systemic scenario which aims to the creation of a true ‘social ecosystem’.

SCALO DE PINEDO TYPE URBAN REGENERATION LOCATION ROMA STATUS ACADEMIC - THESIS ADVISOR ANTONINO SAGGIO YEAR 2015 TEAM LIVIA CAVALLO, GIUSY RUBINO
The project represents one of the three magnets that contribute to the riverside regeneration in SideBySide; the design and program therefor follow the principles of the requalifiction of the stretch of the Tiber’s banks. The location sets the primary characters of the project: the historical and architectural pre-existences and the residuals of contemporary transformations, the complex Baroque lines, the settled vocation as a gate to the river and as one of its major harbours, all set the basis for a next step in the area’s evolution. Specchi’s late baroque Ponte di Ripetta, demolished during the construction of the river’s retaining walls, was here reproposed - in late ‘800 - in its curves and primary function: the city turned its back to the bronze water and this staircase stayed as the last big opening to its banks. The strong ‘900 planning choices, the construction of Moretti’s Ponte Pietro Nenni, the urban development contributed, on one side, to the consolidation of the instrinsic vocation of the area; on the other, they underlined its time conflicts.

In this scenario, within the SideBySide project, Scalo De Pinedo acquires a main role as an introduction to the banks and chooses, once again, to operate on residuals and vocations. A small building fills up the corner void left blank by the symmetric design of the late ‘800 staircase, which curves are now extended to become architecture, then public space, and eventually opening as a gate. Then the area jumps into the river becoming a water-plaza, cleaned by the connected pool through fyto-depuration, restoring the idea of a friendly river, possible to bath in. The abandoned area acquires a new identity through the connection between its solid marble past, its dynamic contemporary times and the unpredictable and independent rythm of nature. Its role as an harbour, its exchange vocation is translated into the project program: a place of the mixitĂŠ where visitors are accompagnied towards the riverside through an info point, a temporary exhibit space, a cafĂŠ which hosts a small library, booksharing and bike-rental services, all socially connected to the other designs of SideBySide.

Water has a main role in the functioning of the new public space and building: a closed-cycle process - which starts from the Tiber and travels through the floating structure, the plaza and the info-building - restores the daily role of the river in a process of depuration and re-use. Technologic systems were chosen through the use of AskNature database, and processually respond to human challenges through the observation of nature.

TeverePuntoEat finds its reasons, once again, in its context: this time the driving character is mainly morphological and socio-economic. Set in a area mostly composed by medium-high housing and offices, the project looks at the daily needs and possibilities of the local population in order to find a chance to bring them down to the riverside and connect the urban reality to the one, forgotten, of the Tiber. While discending towards the water, the fast timing coffee bar, directed towards the city, slows its rythm down and explores local production with the use of aquaponica and hydroponica, a slow-market, social food labs, offering a view to the SideBySide area and projecting the costumers towards its features. The area is currently one of the largest access to the banks, thanks to the presence of two big ramps, one bringing down to the ‘safe’ shore level, the other directly to the water level, and hosts abandoned touristic boat, making it necessere to prontly operate. The ramp building takes the visitors down to a public market which is designed in order to respond to different functioning and water levels.

PARCO DELLE SALINE TYPE LANDSCAPE LOCATION OSTIA ANTICA STATUS ACADEMIC YEAR 2014
The landscape design, which takes place in an abandoned area close to the site of Ostia Antica, captured between the railroad and the artery of Via Ostiense, is based on transformation and recovery: the current status, the existing character and the orography of the territory are deeply studied and represent a solid supporting structure for the development of the park. The soil movement is therefor limited and is only used in order to reinforce the pre-existing character of the area and its possible vocations. Water has a main role in the definition of the landscapes, and it finds references in the history of the territory as a basin and pond scapes. It is organized as an active

water system, thanks to phytopurification and inner distribution. The vegetation is the one supported by the local climate and soil, and constists mosly of local hygrophilous trees. The overall system, articulated in a sequence of three ‘parks inside the park’, each one standing on the different characteristics acquired by the area in time, supports and stimulates the movement, horizontally and longitudinally, and includes in its strategy the design of the Municipality Hall, which works as a floating plaza that activates an higher level of distribution, needed for the connection with the urban sorroundings.

CASA DELLA CITTÀ TYPE PUBLIC ARCHITECTURE LOCATION OSTIA ANTICA STATUS ACADEMIC YEAR 2014
Overview of the Hall and the park
The design for the Casa della Città - House of the City, hosting Rome’s X Municipality Hall, is included in the park’s system, dinamically developing its connections through the creation of an higher level of distribution. The pure crossing of infrastructural barriers becomes a route as part of the Parco delle Salin, activated in its elevation with the floating plaza and a sequence of glimpses which connect, phisically and visually, the archeological site of Ostia Antica, the castle of Giulio II, the Municipality Hall, the train station, and the different areas of the oark itself. The inner distribution of the building promotes the same objective: here the Salone del Pubblico - the Community Hall is part of a urban gallery that continues the main external path, linking and opening towards the pool area and the one of the pedestrian Via di Castel Fusano. The solid of the office building is therefor articulated by the high-level crossing - generating openings and overlaying the upper plaza to the inside one of the Hall, tightening the relationship between urban space and open surroundings; it is then reconnected to the park which penetrates its movements - adding a community character to the working spaces; it is eventually excavated by the main sharing places - the one of the council hall, accesible both from the inside of the building and from the floating plaza, designed in order to host public assemblies and partecipated labs - and the one of the Municipality Plaza, embraced by the volumes of the Casa della
Città and the ones of the train station, connected to the cafè area and protected from the traffic by natural barriers, between a Maple wood and a wide water surface, located within a natural depression. The offices hang out towards the gallery and recompose the framework of the builging through a system of double-hights wich provide natural light and expand the space of the gallery, inglobing their single rooms. Sliding glass doors separate the macro-areas of the Municipality organization, allowing their autonomous functioning while still providing a visual consumption. The Council Hall is nestled within the costant rhythm of the facade, here interrupted, again proposing a view to the park, connecting in level the main places of the scape, with no more distinction between the urbanized area and the one of the old abandoned void.

S-CAVIN IT TYPE EXHIBIT DESIGN LOCATION ROMA STATUS ACADEMIC YEAR 2013 TEAM L.CAVALLO, G.RUBINO, S. DI MARCO
S-Cavin IT is a project by ZEROSEIMG http://zeroseimg.altervista.org/ enterpier.html - team ‘born and raised’ inside Antonino Saggio’s ITCAAD2013 course. Request was to create an expositive area for ’Tevere Cavo’ www.arc1. uniroma1.it/saggio/. The display aims to create an interactive space to be perceived from te urban outside, lived on its shores - with a wooden dynamic bench that shapes on the use - and explored in its inside development. Located next to the University classes, in an abandoned and degraded hallway projected towards the riverside, the design continues and reconstructs the Tiber section, figuratively finally allowing the community to enjoy its shores.
3d panel structure was modelled in Grasshopper. ‘If Rome is to be read through its section, then Tiber is its pinnacle’ The Tiber jumps into the exhibit space proposing its sectional nature, in a fluid movement that shapes the inside. An interactive warm in-forms the space; strarting from the street, the different layers climb up and shape their embankments. The bench changes following the human moves; we fold and explain the space as the constant water metamorphosis does. The inner cave explores the territory and its history from the inside.’

CONCERTO A VILLA ADRIANA TYPE TEMPORARY INSTALLATION LOCATION VILLA ADRIANA STATUS ACADEMIC YEAR 2014 TEAM L.CAVALLO, G.RUBINO, A.ZANINI
The project takes place in the archeological site of Villa Adriana, in front of the vestibul, area which is normally closed to the public and therefor exclusevely perceived from the above terrace. The set-up deals with the fundamental theme of interventing on archaeologic pre-existences, in a scenario of temporary interpretations of historical traces, facing the need of interlacing a double relationship with the villa: in its daytime suggestions, taking place along an established visitors path where the role of the project is the one of setting a new light on a location which is in fact excluded by the path itself, and in its new nighttime capacity, in an area exceptionally opened to the public, which will show an inverted point of view of the ruins, opening the look towards the evocative background of the Cento Camerelle, and reproposing the role of entrance of the vestibul area.

URBAN PIER TYPE CONCEPT DESIGN - INSTALLATION LOCATION ROMA STATUS ACADEMIC YEAR 2013 TEAM L.CAVALLO, G.RUBINO, S. DI MARCO
Along the river ZeroSeiMG identifies a key spot, the place of exchange and interaction; a few steps from our University, in thr Tevere Cavo area www.arc1. uniroma1.it/saggio/TevereCavo/Official.htm between Ponte Matteotti and Ponte Nenni. Here, like an hidden stone garden, the reconstruction of Ponte di Ripetta sections the Tiber’s shores and reconstructs its margins. Here, in the abandon status of a break in the busy center of Rome, it is possible to read a spatial and time over-layering. The metro train emerges for an instant, in a pause of light for the modern underground city and the rythm of its movements, blurrying descovering a place where a stretch of history was relocated to react with the local one,. A port that becomes a bathing island, a stretch of reality which is brutally counterposed to the one of the workd that overlooks to it. Perhaps is ‘the harbour’ itself the key event, a harbour that represents neither a departure or an end-point, an harbour as a transition point.
The real focus of the project is to be found in its program, as it confronted, after deep context analysis, with the social structure of the urban surroundings, listening to the different realities merging in this abbandoned historic place: the river, the urban center, the train emerging fro a short stretch from the deeper layer of the contemporary city, the street life. The project, which developed on a conceptual level to be further explored, aimed to link the needs of the administration, education to recycling, leisure, water depuration and experimental energy production in a web-like structure where the waste of a sybject becomes someone else’s resource, seeking for an up-cycling process.
S. NICOLA DE LORENESI TYPE RESTAURATION LOCATION ROMA STATUS ACADEMIC YEAR 2013 Within the interventions needed for the restauration and conservation of the church of San Nicola de Lorenesi, between Largo Febo and Piazza Navona, emerges the one of a functional and liturgical readjustement to allow the survival of the construcion, testimony of the evolution in time of aesthetic taste and architectural habits, both in its historical and cultural role and in its function as a sacred place: the most recent adjustements, from the liturgical organisation, to the lighting, to the distribution of the annex spaces, obstruct both the visitability and the reading of the archtectural system, and the correct developing of functions in relation to their timing and and extent. Deep analysis of the current status, specific and contextual, the study on construction phases, of the architectural system and its components allowed the identification of guide lines to intersect the promotion of historical and architectural prooves with an appropriate use of spaces, essentiale for conservation itself. A glass boxed door enables a global view of the church even when it stays closed to the public; all the furniture is re-designed so that it doesn’t impede the understanding of the architectural structure, in its axial continuity and transvers rhythmic; the lighting project supports these rhythms and add value to the elements of decoration and painting; the liturgy places are reorganized according to the new official guide-lines while following the suggestions given by the architecture.

BIG BUILDING IN PARIS TYPE WINERY LOCATION PARIS STATUS ACADEMIC YEAR 2012 TEAM LIVIA CAVALLO, MARK DUNKANSON
The project is the result of the Design Studio ‘Structure, Space and Expression - Big Building in Paris’, held by Professors Krucker and Bates at Technische Universität München in 2012. Located in the outskirts of Paris, in an industrial area, aim of the design was to explore the theme of architectural structure in relation to the space and atmosphere created: the use and functioning of the construction were therefor to be chosen steps after and consequentially to the definition of the space.
Elevation

The building scaves the volume below and creates a hypogean courtyard sorrounded by a tight grid, lightnen and joined by the arched connection above ground level. A metal ramps runs across the grid autonomously, exploring the architecture and the production it hosts, creating openings and terraces that connect the different terrain sections. The arches emerge from the ground and intersect as growing, in a route slowly falling into the land, ‘til the inner courted workspace, as the structure brenches above.
