Master Thesis Professors Joris Fach, Roger BundschuhThis project is an attempt to deal with the lack of affordable living and working spaces for artists in the central areas of Berlin, through the usage of obsolete structures. The chosen structure is an abandoned multi storey car park in the neighborhood of Kreuzberg. It stands out as a long horizontal open structure among a collection of tall residential building blocks. The program combines atelier and housing for artists as the new intervention and public usages in the existing structure functioning as a gathering center for the community. The fisrt slab of the existing parking structure is removed in order to receive public functions such as exhibitions, markets, cafe and leisure. The circulation is done by ramps along the street, working as the continuation of the public street, only stacked. The new architectural intervention is inserted on the upper floors, composed by concrete beams, which act as a blank canvas.

The project was a extension of a house into the wild garden with the attempt to disturb as little as possible the surrounding nature. Following that premise, the main material was timber and the construction was elevated from the ground.

The museology project was designed to create an experience based on the artistic principles of the painter Piet Mondrian and the artistic movement De Stijl in Holland. Most of the artworks displayed are from Mondrian, organised chronologically, intertwined with the works of architects and artists related to the De Stijl Movement, displaying not only paints but also, photos, facsimiles, furniture and models.
The exhibition took place in a building from the 18 century, not appropriate for exhibitions. To properly conduct a promenade between rooms and corridors, smalls pieces of the exhibition were placed and primary colours were added to the walls allowing the visitor’s sensory continuity. In addition, to highlight the exhibition, instalations were placed at the entrance hall, with games and interactive assemblies, which facilitates the visitor to get acquainted with the exhibition and stimulates them to go further and deeper.
