ItstartswhenyouwalkinsideOgle Stadium,whichisnamedafterH.L. “Shorty”Ogle,Decatur’swinningest footballcoach.
Thenthere’sEarlWebbFieldhouse, whichisnamedaftertheheadcoach wholedtheRedRaiderstoaplayoffstate championshipin1971.
Justinsidethefieldhouseentranceis theofficefortheheadcoach.Forthefirst timesince1995,ithasanewoccupant.
AaironSavage,37,takesoverfromthe retiredJereAdcock,whofinishedwith 187winsin27seasons.
Theofficeisnotgrandbyanystretchof theimagination.There’sroomforadesk, acoupleofchairsandabookcasewhere thecenterpieceareAuburnandDecatur helmets.Asignabovethehelmetssays: GoodPlayersInspireThemselves.Great PlayersInspireOthers.
“Itremindsmeofmydormroomin SewellHallatAuburn,”Savagesaid. “Wehadbunkbedsinthecornerand therewasn’tmuchroomforanything else.”
Savage’sroommateatAuburnin 2005wasfellowdefensivebackJerraud Powers,whostarredfortheDecatur RedRaidersandlaterplayedintheNFL, includinginoneSuperBowl.
Today,PowersisaDecaturalum excitedabouthisformercollegeteammateleadinghishighschool’sfootball program.
“Aaironunderstandsthevaluesand traditionsofaplacelikeDecatur,” Powerssaid.“Heunderstandswhatit takestowinandcaresaboutdoingthings therightway.”
SavageisDecatur’ssixthheadfootball coachin90years.That’snotatypo.In ninedecades,Decaturhashadjustsix headfootballcoaches.

“Theysteppeduplastyearandwe expectthemtohaveanevenbiggerrole andgreaterimpactfortheoffensethis year,”Perkinssaid.

ThisisSavage’sfirsttimeasahead coach.TheformerAuburnplayerhas beenacollegeassistantcoachatnine schools.Hewasahighschoolassistant coachatValdostaHighinGeorgiain2013.
Itwasahugebouncebackseasonfor theRedRaiders.Afterthreeseasonswith acombined8-23recordandoneplayoff game,Decaturwent9-3andrecorded itsfirstplayoffvictorysince2018.The
RedRaidersopenedtheseasonwithsix straightwinsandwererankedashighas No.8in6A.
Thethreelossesincludedregioncontestsvs.MuscleShoalsandHartselleand aplayofflosstoGardendale.Thosethree teamswereacombined32-7andeach teamadvancedtotheClass6Aplayoff quarterfinals.

“Whatourguysneedtounderstandis thatit’snot2021or‘22.It’s2023,awhole differentyear,”Mooresaid.“Wehaveto havenewguysstepupandIthinkwe’ve hadthat,notjustonthefield,butfrom aleadershipstandpointaswell.
“Thecoolthingisthattheseguyshave beendevelopedandmoldedforthis moment.Wewantourguystobe17or18, juniorsandseniors,whentheybecome starters.That’swhatcoach(Bob)Godsey didbeforeherethathadsomuchsuccess andwe’retryingtocontinuethat.”
Forthesixthseasoninarow,Hartselle willhaveadifferentstartingquarterback. SeniorLandonBlackwoodtakesover forJackSmith,whothrewforover2,000 yardsaseasonago.Blackwoodisthe youngerbrotherofJTBlackwood,the Daily’s2021PlayeroftheYearwhoalso threwforover2,000yards.
“Iwouldlovetohaveareturning starteratquarterback,butatthesame timeeachonethat’scamethroughhas kindofbestedtheonebeforehim,” Mooresaid.
LandonBlackwoodspentlastyearas astartingreceiverinadditiontobackup quarterbackrole.Likethequarterbacks beforehim,hehasbeengroomedforthis role.
“Landonhasbeenaroundforfour years.Heknowstheoffenselikethe backofhishand,”Mooresaid.“He’s accurateandknowswheretogowith thefootball.”
JuniorNoahLeewillbethebackup and,likeBlackwoodandSmithbefore him,willalsogetrepselsewhereinthe offense.
TheTigershaveaveraged41points pergameeachofthelasttwoseasons. However,thisyeartheyreturnjusttwo starters.
Thegoodnewsisoneofthosewillbe seniorrunningbackRIFletcher.Fletcher had2,124all-purposeyards,including 1,306rushing,aseasonagowith24total touchdownsandhasmultipleDivisionI collegeoffers.

Footballhasbeenatoolguidingmost ofSavage’slife.Hisfather,Alphonso, isaretiredpostalworkerandownsa barbershopinAlbany.Hislatemother, Adrienne,wasafourth-gradeteacher.
“Iwasblessedtogrowupinatwoparenthome,”Savagesaid.“Westill livedinacommunitywhereitwaseither sportsorgangs.Myparentsallowedus toplayeverysportwewantedtoplay.”
Savage’solderbrother,Antwone,was astarathleteatAlbany’sWestoverHigh School.Heevenplayedforanelitetravel
basketballteamcalledtheAtlantaCeltics,butfootballwashispathtocollege.
TheolderSavagecommittedtoplay receiveratAuburnforheadcoachTerry Bowdenin1998.Bowdenwasousted duringthe1998season.Afterthathappened,Savageneverheardfromthe Tigers.HeinsteadsignedwithOklahoma andwasastarontheSooners’2000 nationalchampionshipteam.

“Brylanismoreofapocketpasserand Cayneismoreofanathlete,shiftykind of guy,”Hamptonsaid.“Theyjustboth haveaparticularskillsetthatwebelieve t hattheycouldhelpcontributeatthe quarterback slot.”
Second-teamall-countyrunningback K ameronPittwillbethestarter.Pitt had124carriesfor436yardswithfour touchdowns lastyearasajunior.
“He’sagreatkid,tough,hard-nosed, he hasincreased(hisstrength)themost outofanyplayerintheweightroom,” Hamptonsaid.“He’sasenior,heleads

JaylanSmithwillalsobeinhislast season.Theall-countyrunningback finishedlastyearwith73carriesfor543 yardsandthreetouchdowns.Heaveraged7.4yardspercarry.Healsohad
1 2catchesfor161yardsandone touchdown.
QuintezMcCoy,theall-county w idereceiver,willalsohavetobe replacedthisyearafterhefinished l astyearwithninecatchesfor178 yardsandtwotouchdowns.Healso rushed for173yardsandtwotouchdowns.All-countyoffensivelineman Daekwon Burginalsograduatedlast year andwillneedtobereplaced.
Otherplayersthathavedeparted f romtheEaglesincludeHayden Grubbs andCalebSmith.
Withanewcoachcomesnew a djustments,andthatisthecase with thedefense.
“Thedefenseremainstobeseen. W ehavepotentialatallpositions t obesolid.Theykeepworking,” Hampton said.“Iftheykeepgetting b etterandlearningwehavesome guysthathavethepotentialtostand out.”
McCoywillalsohavetobe replacedondefense,wherehewas
alsoall-countyatdefensiveback. Hefinishedlastyearwith24tackles andtwoforcedfumbles.Hampton saidmanyofhisplayerswillhave toplaytwopositionssoitislikely someEagleswillplaybothoffense anddefense.
TheseasonopeneragainstWinstonCounty,facingasmallerschool withplayoffexperience,couldgive EastLawrenceanopportunityto breakitslosingstreak.TheEagles’ late-seasonrivalrygameagainst WestMorganwillalsobeagameto watch.
“IgraduatedfromEastLawrencein‘98soitmeanssomething tome.WehadprettydecentfootballherewhenIwashere,things werejustgood,”Hamptonsaid.“I wantmykidstoexperiencewhatI experienced.Ijustwanteveryone’s involvement,fromthecommunity totheplayers.Iwantthemtoenjoy itandhelpgetthatwinningculture back.”
EastLimestonehasreachedtheplayoffsthreestraightyearsandfourofits lastfiveseasonswiththelastpostseason win overBoazin2018.
TheIndiansareinClass5A,Region8 withArdmore,Brewer,Fairview,Lawr enceCounty,RussellvilleandWest Point.

EastLimestonefinished5-6(3-3, fourthintheregion).TheIndiansstarted the regularseason4-0,including3-0in region play,toreachtheplayoffsbefore losing atArabinthefirstround.
“Ourguysexpecttogetintotheplayoffs,”Woodfinsaid.“Theyknowhowto fight. That’satraitofourculture,really thecommunityhere.Ourguysarepretty tough guys.Theydon’tquitatanything they do.Expectationsarehigh.”
