The Living Arts Centre is a dynamic venue where students and teachers can explore the wonders of the visual and performing arts. Workshops have been planned and school performances selected to help teachers meet Ontario Curriculum objectives. Our programs will enhance your students’ experiences in the arts by providing an enriching and differentiated learning environment outside of the classroom. Our school workshops and select performances are also available in French language and are designed to accommodate all levels of French, from Core to Francophone. Grades 7 –12 Help your students bring Shakespeare to life with this high-energy drama workshop! Students will explore the language and themes from one of Shakespeare’s signature plays, either Romeo and Juliet or A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Our dynamic instructors will help students relate to the words of Shakespeare by guiding them as they transform sections of the play into modern day scenarios and situations.

Explore screen printing techniques with an experienced printmaker! Students will learn the fundamentals of creating patterns, designs and images using the silkscreen printing method to create a unique print to take home.

lino-cut printing linogravure Grades 4 –12 Discover the tools and techniques of printmaking! Students explore elements of design while carving a lino-block to be used in creating their own prints. Students will take home finished prints and a carved block that can be used for home or school printing projects.

ceramics Ceramic pieces will be kiln fired and ready for pick-up within three weeks of the workshop date. After kiln firing, pieces can be painted with acrylic paints in the classroom.

Learn the fundamentals of clay handling while experimenting with shape, form and texture. Students will explore hand-building techniques including pinch pot, slab and coil to create a variety of possible projects (selected when you make your booking) including animal figures and percussion shakers. Ask us about our special holiday-themed ceramic projects!
clay mask making masques en argile Grades 4 – 12 Learn the fundamentals of hand-building techniques to create a clay mask. Students will explore methods for creating surface texture and for applying additional clay to create volume. The history of mask making in the ceramic arts as well as “creative characterization” will be discussed throughout the workshop.

Connect clay to your ancient civilizations curriculum! Each project that students make will be catered to specific expectations for their grade. Grade five students will learn to make canopic jars for the preparation of Ancient Egyptian mummies, while grade four students will create gargoyles to relate to medieval times. Connect the elements of dance, drama and music! In this workshop, students will demonstrate an awareness of themselves as dramatic artists and dancers. With the help of our instructor and a magical map, the class will embark on a creative and imaginative adventure as they encounter animals, obstacles and pirates in their search for treasure!

This exciting workshop for younger students combines storytelling, music and dance for an action-packed, curriculum enriching experience! Students will learn basic dance and drama techniques and terminology, developing focus, coordination, stage skills and self-confidence. Music and stories provide sources for creating characters and for preparing a short piece for performance. Stories to choose from include: Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, Henny Penny, and Billy Goat’s Gruff. Also book tickets to a performance of Pinocchio on March 28th, 2014! Performances are offered in either French or English language.
hip hop Grades 3 – 12 This dynamic dance program introduces students to contemporary dance forms including hip hop, jazz and line dance. Set to popular R&B and Pop music, students will learn dance skills and choreography adapted to their grade level. Students will also have an opportunity to develop their own choreographed dance. Workshops are available in French or English; please specify language preference at time of booking.
music cultural fusion danse culturelle Grades 6 – 12
Celebrate diversity with your students through the art of dance. This workshop will integrate dance combinations from a variety of cultural styles and fuse them together in a choreographed sequence students will perform. The origin and cultural history of each dance form will be explored, incorporating a variety of curriculum objectives across subject areas. Workshop is available in French or English; please specify language preference at time of booking.
world rhythms Grades 1 – 12 Watch your students become budding musicians in just two hours as they play drums from all over the world: the congas, the bass drum and the djembe. Students will experiment and investigate how materials and sound are related to one another in a hands-on environment. This workshop encourages collaborative thinking as students come together to create an orchestrated percussion performance. Workshop themes are curriculum connected according to grade and include, but are not limited to, Heritage and Citizenship, Canada and World Connections, Matter and Material, Energy and Control and Ancient Civilizations.

mixed media relief sculptures
sculptures bas-reliefs Grades 1 – 3 Explore the elements of shape, form and colour in our Relief Sculpture workshop. Students will learn about this traditional 2D sculpting technique before creating their own project using both monochromatic and polychromatic color schemes. Using a combination of mediums including oil pastels and acrylic paints, each student will create a unique low-relief artwork to be showcased at home or in the classroom!

In this workshop, students will learn about the mathematical proportions of the face and then investigate ways they can manipulate those proportions to create a unique abstract sculpture.

Grades JK – 3 Take a journey through our exciting education art gallery and learn all about the elements of art. Students will have the opportunity to discover, describe and interpret artworks made by secondary students in a fun environment designed just for them! After exploring the gallery, students will create their own colourful, textured, Rangoli art inspired masterpiece in one of our professional studios. The Art Story workshop is a great way to introduce students to a child-friendly gallery setting where oral communication will be developed as they actively discover and discuss the elements of art.

Grades 4 – 12 This new workshop is designed to incorporate an educational tour of the Centre’s art gallery with a hands-on activity in one of our professional studios. Students will have the opportunity to view, describe and interpret artworks made by both students and professional artists before creating their very own work of art. In the studio, students will put the principles of art into practice, and use cubism and contour drawings to create an abstract self-portrait inspired by the Indian folk art, Rangoli.

Visit the Centre’s art gallery on the second floor as part of your school visit. Your students will love our education exhibition “Art Story” featuring works by students from both the DPCDSB and PDSB as well as exhibitions showcasing works from emerging regional artists. This is the perfect way for your class to discover and discuss the elements and principles of art. Admission is FREE! The gallery is open for school groups Mondays through Fridays. These whimsical tales have enchanted many generations, and Mermaid Theatre’s acclaimed stage adaptation teaches as well as entertains.

Combining a daunting array of musical styles and influences to produce a signature sound that is not quite maestro, not quite emcee, this group is redefining the music world one string at a time. With influences ranging from Bach to Beyoncé, Black Violin breaks all the rules, blending the classical with the modern to create something students can both relate to and be inspired by.

All performances are held in the Centre’s professional theatres and feature performers from around the globe. Performances are generally between 60 and 75 minutes in length including a question and answer period. All performances have study guides with curriculum-enriching ideas for pre and post performance activities.

As Jonas trains to become the Receiver of Memories, the buried truth about the world that he was born into becomes hauntingly clear to both Jonas and the audience. Surrounded by a pre and post show interactive discussion, the audience will explore themes including individuality, ethics and social constructs.

Students will learn exciting Bollywood dance moves that fuse Indian and Western dance forms. From Broadway to MTV, Bollywood is taking the world by storm!

Explore the unique rhythms and style of Salsa dancing while learning about an element of Latin American culture.
Younger students will get a great introduction to dancing by learning exciting and age appropriate jazz and hip hop techniques that are sure to engage even the most hesitant of participants!

Expose your students to the foundation of contemporary Hip Hop through the exploration of traditional West African dance set to uplifting percussive music.

mischievous and impulsive Dob. After one of their arguments, they find themselves lost in the woods and are forced to camp overnight at the foot of a large mysterious tree. Little do they know that the tree is inhabited by a huge monster! It takes their encounter with this monster to resolve their personal differences, come to a better understanding of each other and find their way ‘home’.
Drawing in Ink (Gr. 7 – 8) Dessins en encre Excite your students about drawing using materials other than a pencil. In this workshop, students will learn the basics of figure drawing using the traditional medium of India ink. CAPACITY:

Lunch and refreshments are NOT available on location. If you are planning a full day of activities at The Living Arts Centre, a lunch space may be provided if available. Special First Student bus rates are available when booking a school trip to the Living Arts Centre. In most cases, First Student busses will not pick up students prior to 9:15 am and must depart the Centre no later than 2:00 pm. Please contact First Student Canada to arrange your bussing at 1-866-652-4352. Teachers must remain with students AT ALL TIMES during your visit to the Centre.
