The Living Arts Centre is a dynamic venue where students and teachers can explore the wonders of the visual and performing arts. Workshops have been planned and school performances selected to help teachers meet Ontario Curriculum objectives. Our programs will enhance your students’ experiences in the arts by providing an enriching and differentiated learning environment outside of the classroom. Our school workshops and select performances are available in French language and are designed to accommodate all levels of French, from Core to Francophone. We look forward to welcoming you to the Living Arts Centre!

drama shakespearean steps Grades 7–12 Help your students bring Shakespeare to life with this high-energy integrated drama and dance workshop. Students will explore themes from grade appropriate Shakespearean plays and through the ideas of characterization and movement, create and choreograph a scene to popular hip-hop and R&B music. Stage combat, Shakespearean conflict and how these can be interpreted through dance mediums will be explored. “All the world’s a stage” and your students will be freestylin’ all over it! Also book tickets to The Improvised Shakespeare Company’s performance of Shake it Up!
drama | l’art dramatique Grades 3 –12 Challenge your students to develop their self-confidence, creativity and performance skills while participating in this energetic drama workshop. Theatre professionals introduce fundamental theatre terminology and techniques through drama exercises and theatre games that focus on movement, improvisation, voice and character development. Explore screen printing techniques with an experienced printmaker! Students will learn the fundamentals of creating patterns, designs and images using the silkscreen printing method to create a unique print to take home.

lino-cut printing linogravure Grades 4 –12 Discover the tools and techniques of printmaking! Students explore elements of design while carving a lino-block to be used in creating their own prints. Students will take home finished prints and a carved block that can be used for home or school printing projects.

ceramics Ceramic pieces will be kiln fired and ready for pick-up within three weeks of the workshop date. After kiln firing, pieces can be painted with acrylic paints in the classroom.

Learn the fundamentals of clay handling while experimenting with shape, form and texture. Students will explore hand-building techniques including pinch pot, slab and coil to create a variety of possible projects (selected when you make your booking) including animal figures and percussion shakers. Ask us about our special holiday-themed ceramic projects!
clay mask making masques en argile Grades 4 – 12 Learn the fundamentals of hand-building techniques to create a clay mask. Students will explore methods for creating surface texture and for applying additional clay to create volume. The history of mask making in the ceramic arts as well as “creative characterization” will be discussed throughout the workshop.

sculptures historiques Grades 4 – 12 Connect clay to your ancient civilizations curriculum! Each project that students make will be catered to specific expectations for their grade. Grade five students will learn to make canopic jars for the preparation of Ancient Egyptian mummies, while grade four students will create gargoyles to relate to medieval times. dance & let’s put on a show! montons un spectacle! Grades JK – 3 This exciting workshop for younger students combines dance and drama for an action-packed, curriculum enriching experience! Students will learn basic dance and drama techniques and terminology, developing focus, coordination, stage skills and self-confidence. Music and stories provide sources for creating characters and for preparing a short piece for performance. Stories to choose from include Hansel and Gretel (NEW!), Little Red Riding Hood, Henny Penny and Billy Goat’s Gruff. Also book tickets to Under the Stars, a modern adaptation of the classic story of Hansel and Gretel!
creative movement mouvement créatif Grades JK – 2 Connect the elements of dance to storytelling and music in our Creative Movement workshop. In this workshop, students will demonstrate an awareness of themselves as dramatic artists and dancers. As a class, students will create their own movement map where, with our instructor, they will embark on a creative and imaginative adventure through drama and dance.

Grades 3 – 12 This dynamic dance program introduces students to contemporary dance forms including hip hop, jazz and line dance. Set to popular R&B and Pop music, students will learn dance skills and choreography adapted to their grade level. Students will also have an opportunity to develop their own choreographed dance. Workshops are available in French or English; please specify language preference at time of booking.
music cultural fusion danse culturelle Grades 6 – 12 Celebrate diversity with your students through the art of dance. This workshop will integrate dance combinations from a variety of cultural styles and fuse them together in a choreographed sequence students will perform. The origin and cultural history of each dance form will be explored, incorporating a variety of curriculum objectives across subject areas. Workshop is available in French or English; please specify language preference at time of booking.
world rhythms Grades 1 – 12 Watch your students become budding musicians in just two hours as they play drums from all over the world: the congas, the bass drum and the djembe. Students will experiment and investigate how materials and sound are related to one another in a hands-on environment. This workshop encourages collaborative thinking as students come together to create an orchestrated percussion performance. Workshop themes are curriculum connected according to grade and include, but are not limited to, Heritage and Citizenship, Canada and World Connections, Matter and Material, Energy and Control and Ancient Civilizations.

Take a journey through our exciting education gallery and learn all about the elements of art. Students will have the opportunity to describe, analyze and interpret artworks in a fun environment designed just for them! Oral communication will be developed while students actively discover and discuss the elements of art. After exploring the gallery, practical, hands-on activities in our studio will allow students to create their own masterpieces.

Grades 1 – 4 Explore the elements of shape, form and colour in our new Relief Sculpture workshop. Students will learn about this traditional 2D sculpting technique before creating their own project using both monochromatic and polychromatic color schemes. Each student will create a pair of unique low-relief artworks to be showcased at home or in the classroom!

In this workshop, students will learn about the mathematical proportions of the face and then investigate ways they can manipulate those proportions to create a unique abstract sculpture. How will Stephen react to Adam’s news? What will this mean for their friendship? How do we deal with our own fears and issues when faced with a shift in what we thought we knew? Out in the Open is an honest look at homophobia, friendship, social pressure and navigating the complicated truths of teenage relationships.

Based on audience suggestions, this theatre company creates a fully improvised play in Elizabethan style drawing on their extensive knowledge of Shakespearean themes. Each play is completely spontaneous, so each play is entirely new! This performance promises to make Shakespeare feel exciting, accessible and relevant to students.

Learning the four food groups? Spark your students’ imaginations and connect to the healthy living curriculum in this outreach workshop that will have your class creating a “movement meal” using the elements of dance and drama!
Intro to Dance (Gr. JK – 4)

Younger students will get a great introduction to dancing by learning exciting and age appropriate jazz and hip hop techniques that are sure to engage even the most hesitant of participants!
Students will learn exciting Bollywood dance moves that fuse Indian and Western dance forms. From Broadway to MTV, Bollywood is taking the world by storm!
Latin (Gr. 6 – 10) Explore the unique rhythms and style of Salsa dancing while learning about an element of Latin American culture.
African (Gr. 6 – 10) Expose your students to the foundation of contemporary Hip Hop through the exploration of traditional West African dance set to uplifting percussive music.
Hip Hop (Gr. 4 – 10) Set to current R&B and Pop music, this Hip Hop workshop explores the choreography your students can’t get enough of. CAPACITY: JK – Grade 3 maximum 30 students per session Grade 4 – 12 maximum 40 students per session Workshop will take place at your school. School gymnasium area required.

performances at your school SQUID Precision Drumming February 4 – 8, 2013 a.m. and p.m. performances available New! (Gr. 1 – 8) Combining traditional Celtic fiddle, bagpipes and Highland snare drumming with African, Brazilian, and Cuban rhythms, SQUID will captivate your students with their creativity, originality and energetic performance. Never shy about fusing genres, this Halifax-based group also utilizes beat boxing, hip hop, and electronic music in their ever-expanding palette of influences. Combined with an electric stage presence, daring stick tricks and choreography, a witty sense of humour and an infectious energy that connects to audiences of all ages, the young and charismatic musicians of SQUID are sure to inspire and entertain your students. visual arts Creative Colour (Gr. 2 – 4) Students will explore fundamental colour theory with a focus on colour wheels, colour mixing and the role of colour in famous works of art, before creating their own artworks.
Mixed Masters (Gr. 5 – 8) In this workshop, students will learn about appropriation, or “borrowing” from art history. Students’ finished artworks will mix and mash different painting styles from art history to create a unique contemporary work of art.
Drawing in Ink (Gr. 7 – 8) Excite your students about drawing using materials other than a pencil. In this workshop, students will learn the basics of figure drawing using the traditional media of India ink. CAPACITY: Grade 2-8 maximum 25 students per session. Workshops will take place at your school. Sink nearby required.

What Else Do I Need to Know? Lunch and refreshments are NOT available on location. If you are planning a full day of activities at The Living Arts Centre, a lunch space may be provided if available. Special First Student bus rates are available when booking a school trip to the Living Arts Centre. In most cases, First Student busses will not pick up students prior to 9:15 am and must depart the Centre no later than 2:00 pm. Please contact First Student Canada to arrange your bussing at 1-866-652-4352. Teachers must remain with students AT ALL TIMES during your visit to the Centre. For information or to arrange a pick-up time for work from our Ceramics workshops, please call the Arts Program Administrative and Education Assistant at 905-306-6033.
