Olivia McKay 2022
INTRO
Hello, I’m excited to be presenting some of my work to you today. I’m Olivia McKay, and I graduated from ASU in May, 2021 with a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and a minor in Urban Planning; I’m currently in my first year of grad school for a Master’s in Architecture. This portfolio features a compilation of various projects completed during my time at ASU, shown through both images and links to PDFs if you wish to see more. Thank you for taking the time to scroll through.

PART II THE VOIDA In the fall of my senior year, the studio was tasked with analysing the idea of our campus in ruins coming off of the pandemic. I chose to tap into my fascination with set design and created a void in which to rest, combining architecture with drama and philosophy. Here is a link to a book in which I go more in-depth to the concept and work behind the initial design, and here is the final.

LIBRARY SESSION
In the spring of my junior year, Covid hit. Before that, however, my studio was given one of my favorite assignments so far: designing our own original library. I leaned into all of my favorite architectural characteristics: right angles and simple geometry, clean lines, lots of skylights, and overall inspiration taken from Luis Barragan, Tadao Ando, and James Turrell. Despite dislinikg the desert, I do like the traditional clay architecture that you can find in it; which was the inspiration for the name of my library: Adobe.

Due to the pandemic, I didn’t complete the design. The panel of judges at the end of the semster said repeatedly that they loved it so far, and wish I did.
BROWNFIELD REVIVAL In the spring of my senior year, still connecting over Zoom, our professor gave us a unique assignment: create a graphic novel, inspired by Richard McGuire’s “Here,” documenting how your group would revive a brownfield site through a modular design. My team consisted of myself and three other talented designers, and we chose Two Guns Arizona. We won Design Excellence for our section at the end of the semester due to our consistent performance. Here’s a link to our final document. Left Top: I designed the cover page for our book. Left Bottom: Here’s the floorplan for our final design, done by my teammate in Revit. I mainly use AutoCad, we worked together pack-and-forth for the final iteration. Right: The top rendering is of an original unit concept design, the bottom of the 11-unit layout. The same teammate mentioned above had the idea of turning a wall out to create an opening. 66

PART III EXTRA - CURRICULAR
As for the rest of my free time, I volunteer as a youth leader and graphic designer at a local collegiate-focused church, Hope Church Movement. Here’s a set of graphics I created in Photoshop using the skills I’ve acquired through the work. I love the design field and likely will continue in it regardless of whether I stick with architecture specifically. I’m very interested in philanthropy, be it spiritual or physical, hence the ministry and my current work at the non-profit Chicanos por la Causa.
